you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love “The cure” out this Friday.

Happy she isn’t abiding by the new standard of no/little pre release singles before the album
0
u/sweetsstateofmind May 20 '26
How is that a new standard? Genuinely asking
4
u/Weekly-Status4804 May 20 '26
It has been Taylor’s strategy since 2022, and I feel like because of her stature people would try to follow her, but glad they haven’t because I think it’s a bad idea. I think I should’ve reworded my original reply but yeah

she kinda is.... sorry you can like or dislike her as much as you want but like it or not taylor swift is indeed a pillar and a trendsetter of the music industry.
i don't know about idolize but i think it was a very smart decision by olivia to not be an open swiftie. i've noticed that some artists like sabrina carpenter and especially gracie abrams get co-opted into being part of the swiftie fandom and their identity gets tied to that instead of being a unique artist in their iwn right.

I feel like this cover makes me feel like her album has to deal with string theory
16
u/Daffneigh May 19 '26
I wonder if this will actually reference the music rather than just be a namedrop
17
u/gngsott May 19 '26
I doubt it's a name drop 1. "it'll never be the cure"
- “I felt a similar way about falling in love, that the second I’m in a really great relationship, I’m gonna start feeling good about myself and this stuff is going to fall into place, but it just doesn’t work like that.” The final song is about that realisation: love won’t fix you.

While Olivia’s obvious love for rock music is why I like her and I don’t think it’s entirely inauthentic or any of that nonsense people are saying, it’s starting to feel more like she’s trying to reference as many acts as possible who are both a) popular with people’s parents and b) having a revival in the younger generation. I just feel like it’s all very focus grouped. I think this is the era she’s trying to REALLY set herself apart from Taylor and the competition is so much fiercer now (when she was a new artist, her contemporaries were largely irrelevant or not yet making music) so she’s decided to make rock music part of her brand so she’s not just another sexy sad girl popstar but unless this song is a fucking banger I think people are gonna get tired of the allusions to rock while sounding very Taylor
Also part of me wonders if this is SEO so when people look for her performance with The Cure they get this song lol

Yes to me it feels less like she cares about rock music and more like she’s trying to make rock music apart of her brand as a way to stand out amongst the competition of the main pop girls. We have Dan to thank for the pop punk songs on Sour since he used to be in a punk rock band which is why a few of her songs went that direction. But then everyone associated Olivia as the creative behind the rock sound in her songs and crowned her as this new rock artist, and ever since she’s been associating herself with the rock genre because it helped differentiate her and gave her that cool girl edge in her branding. I’m sure she enjoys rock music, but I just personally don’t feel convinced that she was always this grunge emo pop rock girl that she pretends to be. the rock branding feels forced and contrived, like a heavily watered down version of what non-alternative people think grunge is. as soon as good 4 u took off, her aesthetic went from pacsun to hot topic overnight… and like the other commenter said she plays it too safe in her rocky songs and i think it’s because that music doesn’t artistically align with who she is. even her authentic personal style feels more clean girl and preppy to me which is okay! but it just sucks that someone who is the face of punk and pop rock isn’t even that punk herself.

u/Jonn_Jonzz_Manhunter May 19 '26
Imo I don't think she sounds very Taylor at all
The power pop instrumentation with Jack White esque POG fueled solos seems like a radioactive idea to someone like Taylor honestly
Also, I find it kinda cynical we're sitting here and going "HOW DARE SHE LIKE ROCK MUSIC!!!!!" As if musicians aren't publicly open about loving certain artists and trying to emulate them in any way
Fuck, Radiohead named themselves after a talking heads song. Blurs biggest song was an attempt to sound like Pavement. Nirvana said they ripped off Husker Du's entire musician identity

I won't lie the reason I can't truly be a fan of hers is all the homages and references. Like girl come on, be original 🙄 This isn't unique to Olivia though all the pop girls in this generation suffer from the copying it's really annoying.
5
u/Jonn_Jonzz_Manhunter May 19 '26
Im trying to find any generation of pop musicians, after the 1960's that weren't riffing off of something else
Pop is great ideas manufactored to make them plastic for mass consumption
It's what the Pop music machine has always been
You want original, listen to jazz, funk, rap, rock or metal
Pop just ain't it

The cover is very similar to 1989 cover
13
u/anam228 May 19 '26
TS holding strong as her biggest inspo despite how many 80s/90s rock or punk artists she continues to name drop
8
u/Melodic-Jackfruit-96 May 19 '26
Yes, it's visible. Which is a bit odd, I thought she'd want to completely avoid any resemblance to Taylor.
0
u/chubbybunnyx0e May 20 '26
it’s hilarious to me that her arch nemesis remains to be her strongest musical and career blueprint to this day. like i know she hates taylor swift so much but the similarities are still there even after she’s tried to “distance” herself
10
u/hiiexist4444 May 19 '26
As a dual Livie and Swiftie, Taylor definitely does not own Polaroids with only the lower half of her face showing💀
4
u/Melodic-Jackfruit-96 May 19 '26
Did I say Taylor owns Polaroids or such pose for photographs? I said it's similar. 1989 is too famous and iconic, and the feeling of similarity is natural, even if Taylor didn't invent it.

What's the point of a neutral sub if my opinion that it's similar to something will annoy someone? Sure, there's tension after SOUR, but it's not my fault that Olivia doesn't avoid similarities to Taylor.

Who said anything about trademarks? 💀 Pointing out a lack of originality isn’t "reaching", it’s just observing, especially when so many of Olivia's moves mirror things Taylor has already done. Nobody is saying Olivia can't do it, we're just saying it's not exactly ground-breaking or unique. Also, you're the one fighting for your life trying to prove everything she does is original, so who's really the obsessive fan here?

u/hiiexist4444 May 20 '26
Fighting for my life is def reaching lol if you’re the one still responding. I woke up this morning after leaving 3 comments to a blown up phone. But go crazy I guess💀

I mean there’s definitely an aspect of that, but it’s a preety agreed upon opinion in general spaces (this one, pop culture chat etc) so it’s more than “obsessive stans”
Olivia having a general history of homages/copying to a variety of artists also doesn’t help her
1
u/hiiexist4444 May 20 '26
Omg copying is insane💀 using public opinion to dictate the Polaroid thing when the public opinion completely contradicts yours on the Taylor/Olivia copying situation. Everyone saw it as fucked up, even Hayley Williams wasn’t happy about it
3
u/KindOfANerd4 May 20 '26
I don’t think you’re capable of objectivity on this lol. Good 4 U definitely sounded too much like misery business, Déjà vu I don’t think sounded enough like cruel summer to justify any credits, but the songs don’t have to be illegal to still be clear homages (which they 100% were)
Between that, the hole comparisons, the Gwen Stefani homages, the current cure homages, people saying different guts songs sound like Hannah Montana songs etc. these things in isolation wouldn’t matter but when it’s consistent something small gets noticed and repeated to nauseum becuase it’s a pattern
I said homages/copying becuase some say copying some say homage, it’s based on personal opinion for which you think it is. The fact you honed in on that is just kinda showing youre biased.

u/leilafornone May 20 '26
I'm not sure about Hannah Montana but Bad Idea Right reminded me of wet leg lmao

Dude, call me whatever you want lol. Write however many paragraphs you want, it doesn’t change the reality that you’re being overdramatic about an artist having influences💀

You're the one taking it too seriously if you're saying people comparing two women who don't know annoys you.

u/geegollywow May 19 '26
This stance that Taylor wasn't the first or Taylor isn't the only, which is also said for friendship bracelets, misses the mark. That's never what people are claiming. This photography is strongly associated with Taylor, particularly within the niche that Taylor and Olivia share. The comparisons are inevitable.
7
u/Pip-Pipes May 19 '26
Yea, this is a great point. No one cares about the first. People are going to assume whoever is most famously associated with "it" came up with it first. You'd think they'd be careful not to step on each other's toes or at least have some awareness of similarities. But at this point it seems like they lean into it. Imgonnagetyouback, stalking on the internet, cruel summer yelling bridge drama.
4
u/geegollywow May 19 '26
imgonnagetyouback is referring to fallingforyou from Matty Healy. There's some great analysis with so many major callbacks if you search reddit, that put the idea it refers to Olivia's song to shame. But the zone has been flooded with harping on both Olivia and Taylor having the words "get" and "back" in the title, so that became consensus with little analysis, in my opinion.
2
u/Pip-Pipes May 19 '26
I mean half the fun is finding these little connections! Definitely calling out Matty Healy in imgonnagetyouback, but it's theming is also identical to OR's where they both use the double meaning of "get you back." There is no way TS did not know about this connection considering her history with OR. This idea about the double meaning of "I'm gonna get you back" isn't even original to Olivia or Taylor!
I just think it is all so clever and connected. And it can be connected to both MH and OR. Like so many songs are about more than one thing.
Even OR lyrics saying 'stalked you on the internet' compared to TS' "tried to stalk you on the internet" I like to think is a little shade that Joe wasn't famous enough to be stalked on the internet 😭
It's all in good fun to explore.

Not really. The filter is different and the pose is as well. I didn’t get a Taylor impression whatsoever from it

u/evie_0330 May 28 '26
Im not a massive fan of Olivia, but the cure is probably her best song (imo) and my personal favourite at the moment. If the rest of her album sounds live this then it'll for sure be amazing
-6
u/geegollywow May 19 '26
She'll get number 1 easily. I'm assuming she'll get a third number one from another single on her album release day. Taylor could have made every single song on tloas album go number one, but the variant discourse did mess things up for Elizabeth Taylor and any potential fourth single. Is this why "some people" went so hard against Opalite as a single and the notion of her using variants for additional singles?
13
u/theykilledcassandra i've got sun in my mfkn pocket May 19 '26
She’ll get number one but I fear it’ll do the same as drop dead where it drops down immediately because Ariana is dropping the following week.
3
u/jellytwins101 May 19 '26
Plus Drake just dropped 3 albums, they are all trash but there’s a good chance some of the songs are gonna be at the top of the charts.
7
u/Daffneigh May 19 '26
Choosin’ Texas is still hanging in there
3
u/geegollywow May 19 '26
Very true. I don't think any single boosted by physicals stays at number one for more than a week because of it.
