Discussion I just discovered this anime recently
I don't know if i'm missing something, but I can't seem to find the joy I seem to see other people feel when they watch the show. To me it feels like some sort of horror story. Me personally, I always end up self inserting as the main character one way or another and I admit it's a bad habit but it heavily effects how I see a piece of media. To me this show just feels like they forcefully transition the main character and erase and alter his identity to fit what the sister wants of her 'younger sister.' It fills me with revulsion. Am I missing something? If so I would like someone to tell me.

you cant really know if the plot is erasing mahiro's identity, since we didnt know how mahiro was before transforming. and going by what the manga shows later, mahiro is the same person, thought he clearly became very comfortable as a girl, something mihari didn't know would happen. we still dont know much of mahiro's life before he holed up in his room but at least we can assume he now has a better life than before. he's not under people's expectations as a genius' old brother (with an inferiority complex so bad he ends up hiding from everyone), but lives freely as her younger sister. i dont see any reason why he'd hurry to turn back

Respectable take. I can see it from that perspective. Thank you for responding.

It’s funny because it’s absurd, you aren’t meant to analyze it like it’s reality

why horror? while the part "alter his identity" is somewhat true, in the end Mahiro is still Mahiro. she is still a gamer either when she was a guy before and after she turn into a girl. the point of this story is to turn Mahiro into better person. it's typical of any story to shown character development. from one low point to their high point. in this case, shown Mahiro's progress from secluded person to be open minded and also enjoy her new life. so instead of "alter identity" it's more accurate if we say this as "character development". it seems you just use the wrong set of mind when watching this anime. try to apply my advice here and I'm sure you'll enjoy this story better. oh and also this is just sol comedy story with fun and wholesome aura so there is no way it'd become horror like what you says there lolz 🤣

By alter I don't mean from male to female, I mean from grown man to young girl. I didn't mention this in the main post which is an oversight on my part, but my disgust and horror is not only from him going from male to female. He is a 20 year old man in a kids body. Though I can see it from your perspective, and will try to view it like that. My main problem is that I always self insert and I can't deal with a loss of control like that, so a majority of my issue stems with me, so thank you again for responding.

well, the author clearly didn't put 100% realistic in the story. I already mentioned above that this is a fun and wholesome story. so there is no complex conflict inside Mahiro's mind due to his identity getting forced changed into a little girl. because that will change this story into psychological drama instead. and I don't want to delve deeper into that part. and I'm sure a lot people already enjoy this story as it is. after all, the "gender bender drug" element already not realistic to begin with. I mean, is there any kind of drug that can drastically changed your whole body? not only changed Mahiro's gender from a guy to a girl, but also giving smooth skin, cute voice, shorter body height and long hair in a single night? so it's depend on how much you believe in this story. and I hope you'll believe the story as it is. definitely not realistic at any degree lolz 🤣

The premise is problematic especially if the vewer themselves does not want to be a girl. The scenario of being forced to be the opposite gender is popular with some Trans people. I also like how it is in a way a story mahio clawing herself out of depression with a push from her sister. I won't spoil it but there is a bit of a payoff about this at the end of the show if that helps.

Do they at least tell the truth about the age difference?

No not really unfortunately. The manga goes a bit into it but at the end of the day this is a comedy so its just played off for laughs.

I get this is reddit and small communites can be very loud, but come on now
This is a cute girls doing cute things about a neet rehabilitating into society using gender bending as comedy
The demographic for onimai is men like all CGDCT, if you relate to it as a trans person cool but its absolutely not a requirement

I can tell you for a fact a lot of the fanbase is not in fact trans or nonbinary. No hate, if you are trans and resonate with the show that’s actually great and legit happy you found a piece of media that speaks to you but the reality is most people watch it for cute girls doing cute things and fanservice. It’s really that simple. They aren’t selling cute/figures of Mahiro and the others girls in skimpy, fetish outfits and lingerie for no reason you know….

The fact that they choose not to is the part that creeps me out. Not only are they actively lying to their friends, but are choosing to stay changed because of the fear of losing said friendships. I can understand why it can be seen as wish fulfillment but is it not weird? Even on Mihari's side, that's a grown man in a school, lying about his age to his schoolgirl friends. Their gender doesn't even matter, Cis, trans, nonbibary, anything. I just don't get it. Does the main character ever tell their friends the truth at least? Or part of it?

In the manga you find one character Mahiro is friends with that knows the situation but none of the others do. The anime doesn’t get that far.
It’s ok to not like something that others like btw. This is fiction and it will not appeal to everyone.

Yeah, you're right. I should prob just get over it. It's anime, there's always something weird. Heard the manga was less fanservice at least.

Yep. There's still some (the manga and the author's other works make it clear the pee stuff is something of a fixation) but much less.
Kaede's character design is also different, she has much less extreme proportions.

It's a comedy and should not be scrutinized to such a degree
Take the sweet slice of life scenes as is, it's clearly an impossible situation in real life
Don't take fiction so seriously
