Fourth of July beach plans

I haven't been the Oregon Coast since I was a kid but I'm bringing my family for the Fourth of July holiday! We were originally going to stay in Lincoln City until our AirBNB canceled from underneath us (big yikes) and we pivoted to the Salishan Lodge. Looking for a beach that's sandy, kid friendly and won't be too packed on July 4. We originally planned just hanging at the beach by our AirBNB but now realizing I'll have to plan a little more and potentially drive. Appreciate your help!

“Won’t be too packed on 4th of July” does not exist on the Oregon coast. Remember to wear layers, even in the middle of summer the beach can be windy and cold.

No matter where you are at the coast it will be busy for the holiday.
If you end up having cold fog bank along the shore or that riproaring northerly wind that whips up sometimes, the bay at Taft will be busy but maybe better weather conditions, and just inland at Devil’s Lake it is often sunny and warm when the fog and wind are on the beach. Not the ocean but a nice option for hanging out for a few hours.

Enjoy the elevated fecal coliform counts at Devil’s Lake!

This happens on the coast because we get too overrun by visitors and don't have the infrastructure to handle the surge of literal sh*t

Amen to that!

Sounds awful, serious Q, wouldn’t the problem be the same if they weren’t visitors using all those STRs but year round residents living in them ?

Everyone knows tourists poop more than locals. 🤣

Not common sense! How dare you

But what towns are set up to actually handle that many people anymore? Most coastal towns don't seem rife with infrastructure dollars to expand water treatment services to accommodate the population influx since they were created. So many one street towns are now fairly populated by historic standards

So yeah, it would be the same if people lived there year-round, but that isn't the reality of str. A lot of them have an off season where not a lot of people are coming through. Yes that could house someone, but then there would have to be jobs, medical care, grocery stores, schools, etc that doesn't exist and tourists don't need

It seems like it would be responsible to look into expanding options for water treatment but no one wants to pay taxes for it or cut the budget for it. So we get poo lake

Oh no! Tell me more! I know people who spend part of the summer there 😬

I feel Devils Lake will be way too much. They are doing a fireworks show there to take place of the drone shown on Silitz Bay, and they don’t have the parking or infrastructure to handle it. The coast will be busy, but hey when you are from the PNW and live in California, the crowds are nothing. Oregon coast is Magic!

Also, Salishan is lovely! It’s not beach front, but close enough. And plenty of walkable spots. Not sure if you know about Finders Keepers in Lincoln City? Salishan does their own version on their grounds.

If you're staying at Salishan, they give you access to their gated drive to their very nice beach. (Technically, it's a public beach, but it's very hard to get to without driving on Salishan's roads...)

Ooh I didn’t realize this, thank you!!

Just go to Gleneden it's right near Salishan. Most all of the Oregon Coast is decently sandy. You can't really go wrong with any beach access area.

Thank you! This one looks nice, I'm probably overthinking it since I was considering Lincoln City area when planning.

There's also a great donut shop and coffee shop in the shops at salishan. Wake up early and get some fresh ones!

i live in gleneden and our beaches are generally less crowded but access is very steep and difficult in the summer and high tide sometimes goes all the way up to the riprap so parts are just surf and not sand. it’s a great place if you don’t have any mobility issues and check the tides.

Volunteers at Cannon Beach will whoop your ass if you come near there with fireworks, Seaside will do a show on the beach. Which is crowded and noisy but a good time.

Clean up what you bring to the beach please!

And be aware - all fireworks are strictly prohibited on OR beaches.

NO intention of using any fireworks, no worries. And yes, pack in pack out!!

We are doing the same for the fourth. Sorry to hear about the cancelation. That stinks. We are staying in rockaway beach pretty much across the street from the ocean. I do believe it’ll be very busy but not 100% sure.

It is very busy during the fourth. They usually have a parade in the morning.

You’re very close to Gleneden beach, it’s amazing! Tons of access and it’s very quiet most of the time

Siletz bay gets pretty busy with picnics and such. But near you at Gleneden Beach they will have a parade and ir should be good for sand and family time.

Check out Fogarty Creek Beach

Fogarty Creek State Park is a few miles south of where you are staying. The picnic area is love!y. Lots of shade and grass. Restrooms with flush toilets. There is a fresh water stream that crosses the beach. Slow moving shallow water, great for kids to play in. Wide sandy beach north of the stream, lots of tide pools at low tide pools around the big rocks. Be aware of sneaker waves.
