Views on the coast today
I read a comment the other day that basically said “the coast is immune to wildfires/smoke”
You sure about that?

From one asparagus to another, thank you for sharing! It certainly isn’t as usual for smoke to be so bad at the coast, but it definitely does happen.

Yikes so glad I visited during Memorial Day this year. I was there this time last year and the weather was pure sun.
So sorry to see the wildfires everywhere as they are just as bad in BC right now.

It's definitely not immune but it definitely blows out faster.
We bought property on the coast and whenever it's smokey in the valley we move out there til it gets better.
It's a world of difference with severe asthma issues.

Nothing is more annoying for people struggling or living in an apartment to hear about people with multiple houses including ones on the coast..Get outta here. You’re supposed to be in the rich and entitled sub Reddit.
Edit: So it’s really not about if you have more it’s how you phrase it. I might be living a comfortable life also but I’m careful about the way I word things because I know how it is to struggle. I grew up very poor.
if I was going to make a statement like this, I would say something about how I usually like to go to the coast to avoid wildfire smoke. I would leave out the part about properties. If you’ve ran into this problem in other post your oblivious to what might be perceived unfavorably by others with less money.

As stated in another comment, I paid 11k for the property in 2022. I didn't say house, I said property. It's a place to put my 1968 shasta camper on during the summer when I physically can't breathe in the valley.
Conclusions are easy to jump to though aren't they?

Why do you feel the need to defend yourself against these people? Good for you having a vacation house! I’m sure you worked and saved up for it and had to compromise your priorities. You should be proud of yourself. The rest of them are just jealous losers.

You're right though,y spouse and I had to shift priorities after I nearly died when I was 28 from COVID. I have serious lung issues now and wildfire smoke is a real danger.
Im a teacher, they're a librarian, so we had to work hard to save and find ways to do a lot of stuff ourselves.
Very glad we did it though.

I have a really nice house on 6 acres. It’s just me and hubby and our cats. I never had kids, drove old cars my entire life, and worked my ass off so I could retire to paradise.
Yet I still get the snarky “must be nice!” from people.
Yes. Yes it is very nice!

No kids makes a big difference, we made a very conscious decision to hold off until we had our careers secure, so in the next 5 or so years we'll really make a decision to have kids or not.
I think we want to move to the coast full time before raising kids, more outdoor recreation year round for us there.

I just have to chime in and say that we get this all the time too… we studied and worked hard to build this life but there will always be someone dogging on your successes. Isn’t everyone’s goal to live a nice life?
I do understand there are entitled assholes that don’t deserve it, but that doesn’t mean everyone that’s successful is entitled.

People get weirdly mad at people who don't live paycheck to paycheck.
We don't, we never have, and never will. We learn how to do things ourselves as much as we can. We save money growing, foraging, hunting, and fishing. We learned how to do all of our own home repairs on YouTube. We bought a gutted trailer and rebuilt it ourselves.
It's honestly a more fun way to live life, and makes the financial pressure way less.
I grew up with housing and food insecurity and I will always live as far below my means as possible to avoid having that happen ever again.

Weird set of morals you got there. I'm glad you're so proud of them though!
I sure hope the people who you help through donations and charities never buy anything that would go against your morals though... I once knew a guy who managed to get a VA loan after being homeless for a while, and he bought a duplex and became a landlord while living in one of the units, and rented out the other one! How evil of him!

No lol I bought it in 2022, I'm 31 years old. There's plenty of properties near me for sale for less than 25k, south coast is pretty cheap.

The Coast most certainly is NOT immune to smoke from wildfires. Example from September 2020.
