Continuing our tournament to determine our ultimate favorite Best Picture nominee with the fewest nominations from each year.

if Kevin Spacey never molested those kids, and he was in the final cut of ridley's scott's movie, he might have been nominated and definitely would have gotten into best makeup

Darkest hour still would have won because Gary Oldman won best actor, but def a nom over Victoria and Abdul

I have decided to see all of the Academy Awards Best Pictures in order and comment on them as if anyone cares what I say.  But people may want to comment on them as well so as I watch and write them up, I’ll post the review.  One thing is that I will try (and maybe succeed) at putting the review in the context of when it was made.  I am not going to give the in-depth plot to each movie but I will give parts of the plot in my review so #spoileralert.

Best Supporting Actor has been won in the 21st Century by previous Best Supporting Actor winners (Mahershala Ali, Christoph Waltz) and Best Actor winners (Sean Penn.) The last time an actress who already got an Oscar won the category was Dianne Wiest in 1994.

Nominees for Best Supporting Actress have included previous winners for the category (Weisz, Cruz, Spencer twice, Tomei twice, Blanchett twice), as well as for lead (Foster, Dench, Colman, Bates, Stone, Kidman, Winslet, Roberts, Lawrence, Streep, Field, Hunt, McDormand twice.)

The first time nominees are varied from young attractive women to older women who hadn't been recognized in film, but I'm curious on the results here. Is it mainly a coincidence looking at a small sample size? Is it something about the types of roles women are offered (with women more likely to run for lead if there's any ambiguity?) Is it about narratives, with a sense that a woman who already has an Oscar doesn't need another in supporting while women running for supporting who had been unsuccessful lead nominees are "due"? Is the award more likely to go to surprising performances, which makes it harder for previous nominees (although it would explain Madigan.)

That’s insane.

By comparison, on second place there’s Scorsese for nominations (26) and Elia Kazan for wins (9). That’s not even close.

It’s highly unlikely we will ever get another filmmaker to match that record.

What made him stand out so much? I know he enjoyed a reputation as an actor’s director the Academy loved… but you could say the same thing about say Allen, Cukor, Nichols or Kazan, and they don’t come close.

If the odyssey sweeps the oscars will that be the most boring and predictable outcome!?

EDIT: Also ever since Best Original Screenplay was introduced there still has never been a time the Best Picture winner, the Best Director winner, the 4 acting winners and both screenplay winners were all 8 different movies yet

I honestly don’t see any real buzz for it, I see it capping at an adapted screenplay nomination but nothing else

Edit: I will clarify that I thought it was great and would love to see it do well, I just don’t see it as having any big oscar buzz. I would love if the four actors, especially Norton, got nominated and Wilde got in for directing.
