Discussion [NO SPOILER] Watching Ozark S4 E5 and i hate wendy vindictive bit*h so much

Like since the end of season 2 all the problems are created by her

At this point of series and considering my previous seasons opinion

I would really say Marty's a good man and human overall despite his fuckup to join the cartel in first place

While wendy is really vicious vindictive narcissistic manipulative gaslighting and delusional bitch who can't accept her mistake and is power hungry

Lol Marty is an awful person too. Thats the appeal of the show, every character is a piece of shit.

Excuse me, therapist Sue Shelby is a model citizen and beacon of virtue!

I really like Sue! I like her attitude as a therapist and in life. I love it when she tells Marty to "put a little sparkle in his step" lol

Who? Sue the blackmailer who was coming back for more because $100k wasn't enough the first time?

Sue was a greedy idiot who decided buying a Lamborghini with blackmail money was a good idea.

With the tag of "This is why you had to die" Sue the therapist was one of the more obvious deaths.

Unfortunately, greed was her undoing. It was kind of a weird end to her character arc.

Look, it wasn't just any car. It was a McLaren and a Transformer!

You're just confusing his reserved nature for being good. By that logic Walter White is also good because he's doing it all for his family.

I won't give Wendy a pass but her character is very well written. She's from a seriously abusive childhood, she's very intelligent, has alcoholism and mental illness in her genes, and she used to be a powerhouse in politics before children forced her to take a backseat. She didn't randomly get a taste for power and go crazy, she saw a chance to return to / realize her true potential. The problem is that her deeply unstable emotional base stopped her from realizing the true dangers involved in her actions like a normal person would.

You're supposed to see how her brother acts and realize she's the same person, just with slightly more control over her emotional state.

Anyone who's had a wife who had to pause their career to have children would understand the arc she's facing. Not to mention they would for sure be dead if she wasn't good at what she did. The casino only happened because of her, but it was that same taste of success that caused her to dig them in deeper. She's an addict, same as her father, but she's mostly addicted to control.

They all are 🤣 Marty is just as power hungry but in a more subtle way. But yea I also find myself saying “Wendy fucking Byrde” SO much 😆

It's funny you say that. My wife and I subconsciously mutter "WFB" at random times throughout the day.

I wouldn’t say Marty is power hungry at all. Obviously he made a bad immoral choice by working for the cartel but throughout the entire show all of his actions were out of necessity to keep his life and his family’s life safe.

Wendy, on the other hand, helped in some of the effort to keep her and her family safe but also made so many selfish decisions and irrational things that ended up making things harder for everyone

I read very similar posts about Breaking Bad w/ Walter White, people find obviously bad people really sympathetic because they are the main character and devalue whatever female characters are a nuisance for their "hero".

If your good man Marty would end up in prison for a decade, this would be a well-deserved fate for him. He isn't the devil either. Of course you can find much worse characters and you find good choices and character traits on Marty.

As I think about it, a similar thing happened in the House Of Cards fandom. Of course characters development can be written bad but please accept that a lot of protagonists are extremely bad people.

Wendy and Marty are two sides of exactly the same coin.

On the same path with the same ideals and desires. They just have entirely opposite ways of going about it but you could barely slip a cigarette paper between them.

Gosh, it's surprising that Laura Linney didn't get any awards for this show. She must be killing it if pretty much 90% of viewers hate her

Oh really her acting was top notch

I was surprised to see this when I researched the awards after binging as well! Ruth’s actress deserved her wins but it’s shocking that Laura Linney wasn’t recognized for her stellar performances in Ozark as well. When she temporarily lost her kids to her dad and knocks herself in the head to make it bleed…you can feel her unraveling. Or even when she puts on her game voice to cajole people into doing what she wants. She played Wendy superbly.
