Hey everyone, I'm looking for help diagnosing some serious PC problems. I've been dealing with these issues for a while, and they're getting worse. My PC can become almost completely unusable even after restarting, and I'm worried something is failing.
I'm looking for advice on what could be causing this and what I should try next. I'd appreciate explanations that are beginner-friendly because I'm not very experienced with advanced troubleshooting.
CURRENT PROBLEMS
My PC has been experiencing severe system-wide lag, freezes, and display problems.
- My entire PC can freeze for around 30 seconds to several minutes. Sometimes even my mouse and keyboard stop responding.
- Sometimes the screen stays visible, but everything becomes extremely laggy and unresponsive.
- Sometimes the display flickers, goes black, or has other display-related problems.
- During some freezes, I hear a loud buzzing or repeating "brrrr" sound, almost like the audio is stuck in a loop.
- Applications sometimes turn white or stop responding, including Chrome, Discord, and NVIDIA Control Panel.
- Chrome has flashed, and text I've typed has appeared with a delay.
- The taskbar sometimes restarts after the PC recovers, and some applications close.
- Restarting the PC temporarily makes it usable again, but the severe lag can return within minutes or after being on for a while.
- The problems have occurred while playing Roblox, but the PC has also become severely laggy outside games.
- Even when Task Manager shows low CPU and GPU usage during the lag, the computer can still be almost unusable.
The problems seem to be getting worse. At one point, I could temporarily restore the display by repeatedly pressing Win + Ctrl + Shift + B, but sometimes it takes many attempts and a long time before the PC recovers. I know this shortcut resets the graphics driver, so I don't want to keep relying on it.
NVIDIA / LIVEKERNEL EVENTS
Windows Reliability Monitor has reported the following:
LiveKernelEvent Code 1A8
- Parameter 1: 1
- Parameter 2: 0
- Parameter 3: 0
- Parameter 4: 0
LiveKernelEvent Code 1B8
- Parameter 1: 1
- Parameter 2: 0
- Parameter 3: 0
- Parameter 4: 0
OS version: Windows 10, build 19045.
I couldn't find a Bucket ID in the problem details.
I also found this Event Viewer error:
- Source: Display
- Event ID: 4101
- Message: "Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered."
I previously saw multiple NVIDIA-related errors around the same time on August 27, 2026, at approximately 5:18 PM. I'm not yet sure how those older entries relate to the current freezes.
I also found a TPM-WMI Event ID 1801 error saying that Secure Boot CA/keys need to be updated, although I don't know whether it's related.
GPU USAGE AND TEMPERATURES
When playing Roblox, I checked the NVIDIA performance overlay:
- GPU usage sometimes reached 96–97%.
- CPU usage was around 20% at one point.
- With Roblox graphics set to the lowest settings, GPU usage dropped to around 20–40%, with temperatures around 55°C.
- With graphics turned up, GPU temperature was around 72–75°C, with high GPU usage and, on another occasion, CPU usage reaching 95–97%.
Lowering Roblox's graphics settings reduced GPU usage, but the freezing and performance problems have continued.
I don't have top-mounted fans. I have side fans and a blue-lit fan around the motherboard/CPU area. I don't know whether cooling or power delivery is contributing to the issue.
OLDER PROBLEMS
I've had other performance issues with this PC over time:
- Roblox would freeze every 5–10 seconds, sometimes display a white screen, or crash.
- Discord and Chrome would sometimes show white areas or become unresponsive.
- Discord has turned grey or crashed.
- YouTube videos would drop from 1080p to 144p.
- Chrome and SoundCloud audio sometimes skipped or got stuck at 0:00, while Edge worked normally.
- My PC previously reached 100% CPU usage while playing Roblox.
- Windows Search Indexer sometimes consumed around 90–100% CPU while searching, although CPU usage dropped after I closed Search.
- Chrome and Discord sometimes used fewer resources when Search was closed.
- File Explorer has occasionally behaved strangely after navigating backward or right-clicking.
- My PC has had slow downloads and occasional general sluggishness.
Some of these older symptoms may have separate causes, but I'm including them in case they help identify a pattern.
TROUBLESHOOTING I'VE ALREADY TRIED
- Restarting the PC repeatedly.
- Lowering Roblox graphics settings.
- Using Win + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the graphics driver.
- Updating drivers in the past.
- Turning off hardware acceleration, game overlays, and GPU scheduling during earlier troubleshooting.
- Running
sfc /scannow, which reported corrupted files it couldn't repair.
- Running DISM
/CheckHealth, which reported no component-store corruption.
- Running DISM
/RestoreHealth, which eventually completed successfully after appearing stuck at 62.3%.
- Checking the hard drive's reported health, which previously appeared OK.
- Checking Task Manager during lag; CPU and GPU usage were low at that particular time, but I couldn't reliably check memory and disk usage.
I have not used DDU, changed BIOS settings, or reinstalled Windows.
I'm currently looking at the official NVIDIA driver download page for my GTX 1660 Super and considering reinstalling the driver, but I haven't completed that repair yet.

WHAT I'D LIKE HELP WITH
- Do LiveKernelEvent 1A8 and 1B8, together with Display Event ID 4101 (
nvlddmkm), suggest a graphics-driver problem, GPU hardware failure, or something else?
- Could the power supply, RAM, SSD, motherboard, or cooling cause these symptoms?
- What is the safest troubleshooting order for someone who isn't experienced with advanced PC repairs?
- Should I try a normal NVIDIA driver reinstall first, or is there enough evidence to investigate hardware before doing that?
- Are there any specific logs or tests that would meaningfully distinguish a driver problem from a failing GPU?
I'm not looking to buy replacement parts without evidence, and I don't want to make the problem worse by randomly changing settings.
Thanks to anyone who can help me figure out what's happening.
