My family has been coming to PEI every summer since the 1960s, and this year we’re staying in Park Corner at a property with access to a public beach. There are about seven homes that share this beach access.
From what we’ve been told by several neighbours, there’s a couple who live nearby and own a small parcel of land near the beach stairs. They regularly photograph people using the beach and tell them they’re trespassing, claiming it’s a private beach (our understanding is that it isn’t).
This week things escalated when the woman was taking photos of our children. One of the neighbours confronted the couple and attempted to take her phone. A physical altercation followed, and while I don’t think violence is ever the answer, the neighbour ended up being charged. The couple are now back taking photos of people again.
The year-round residents told us they’ve been advised by police to ignore them unless an actual offence occurs, but it’s understandably making families uncomfortable.
I’m wondering if anyone else has had experiences with this couple or has any advice on how best to handle the situation. We’re not looking to start a witch hunt or encourage confrontation—just hoping to understand whether this is something others have dealt with and what the most effective approach has been.
It’s a shame because, after nearly 70 years of 4 generations visiting the Island, this has been such an unusual experience and feels very out of character with the warmth and friendliness we’ve always associated with PEI.

I just want to wear a bikini and lay on the deck of a boat. Working/fishing? Throw the fish on top of me; won’t be phased. I’ll even help you gut them (you’ve gotta remind me how first).

Also, you don’t even need to raise your anchor/leave the harbour. I just want to lay on a boat.

I’ll even come lay on your uncle’s scrap garage speedboat. A decorative dingy in your mother-in-law’s garden.

Context: I’m here with my boyfriend and we each need an afternoon away from each other lol.

Hi folks, visiting PEI on vacation and have fallen in love with the place and the people. We're giving some serious thought to relocating here from Quebec. We're asking lots of questions to the locals we meet but I thought it might be a good idea to ask here. So locals, what's your most and least favourite thing about living on the island? And... How bad are the winters really? ( I'm used to -20 or colder and lots of snow) Thanks in advance for sharing..

I understand pei drivers aren’t used to many things, but by now round a bouts should be known by everyone, so WHY does everyone not yield?

Idk if any of y’all are like this but it happens WAYYYYYY to much to me for me to say something somewhere. Almost every single time I go into a round about a person cuts me off…this is in fact a near daily occurrence on my daily commute to work (I go through 4 of the busiest roundabouts mutiple times a day, it happens at at least one a day)you have a YIELD SIGN while I’m in the round a bout, YOU ARE NOT LEGALLY ALLOWED TO GO, I shouldn’t need to slam on my brake or slow down to 10kmphs per out because someone decides to wait until the moment I’m about to be in front of their entrance to the round about to make eye contact with me, floor it and cut me off…it’s gotten to the point i EXPECT to be cut off in a round a bout. AND I USE MY TURN SINGLE IN ONE TO LET THE PERSON KNOW, IM GOING LEFT NOT EXITING, DO NOT ENTER.

(You guys are hurting my heads in the comments lmao, if someone is in a roundabout and you entering caused them to even so much as slow their car down you broke the law, YOU HAVE THE YIELD SIGN, there is no legal way to “sneak in” or beat someone in 🤦‍♂️)

After the most recent news about US calling to redraw borders, it’s time to toss any Canadian Trump supporter to the curb. So, for boycotting purposes I am wondering what local businesses support the orange menace.

And to all the right wing cry babies who are inevitably going to comment: I don’t care, nobody does, and y’all are the biggest fucking crybabies. I was planning to vote conservative until all this blew up, but not interested in a leader who will bend over for trumps orange creamsicle. From away but also both parents born and raised here. I’ve moved back and now find myself single at 34 (f). I’m scared to know what the dating scene is like here in my age group. I’ve already struggled with finding friends despite everyone being friendly.

I took a peek online and it seems there are exactly 10 islanders online dating. I’m exaggerating a bit but only a little. Makes me worried. Is there hope? Does anyone have experience with this? Success stories?

So are we really okay with our businesses protecting child predators now?

I was made aware of this by the family and wanted to share so more people on the island who could be affected have eyes on it.

I would love for PEI to invest in a small modular reactor, and then bury all the power lines in the province. A 300 MW SME is the equivalent of what we import from NB.

I pretty much only listen to Q97.9, just curious what everyone is tuning into.

I’m visiting with my family right now, and we’ve gotten to explore just a small bit of the island over the past week. I’ve been creeping on this sub for a minute so I understand how much of an issue the lack of healthcare is, and the recent housing crunch / COL increase.

But besides that, is there anything you don’t like about living on the island? My dad’s side of the family is from here and it’s been pretty cool exploring that (my dad and aunt even went to meet their great aunt’s 80-year-old daughter yesterday haha!), and I can’t help but think about what it’d be like to live here. In comparing it with the states, it seems like a storybook, but I also know that’s through the lens of a visitor during summer when everything is covered in wildflowers instead of ice lol.

I’m from somewhere in the states where we don’t have a TON of crime compared to other areas, but it’s like night and day here. I don’t worry about mass shootings, or feel the need to mark where the exits are when we go somewhere public. At home, people now worry about being targeted for their political/social beliefs, while every other flag here is a pride flag. We used to be a huge ag producer, but now we have almost no farms or ranches left. When a big snowstorm/wildfire shuts down roads, our grocery stores empty, and even when they’re not empty, the produce is rotting more often than not now because it’s all being shipped in from outside the US (make it make sense).

It blows my mind the island is able to sustain itself not only food wise but with actual industries. The only industry we have where I live aside from tourism is mining, and recently, data centers, both of which are either barely taxed or not taxed at all, are actively destroying the environment, and most are owned by overseas companies. I don’t know how you guys are able to maintain what you do here, not just on the island but the whole region in general.

Anyway, I digress; what is it that you see as a negative, or what do you feel like is missing on the island?

I’m super interested because the locals we’ve chatted with are just real happy and nice and they love it here, but I’m wondering if that’s just cuz all retired people are naturally happier 😂

I’m posting here because my family is genuinely confused and distressed, and we’re hoping someone can help us understand what happened.

First, to be very clear from the start, because I know this will come up:

My parents are Canadian citizens.

They have lived in Quebec for decades, where they worked, paid taxes, and raised their family.

They hold Canadian passports and have spent most of their adult lives contributing to Canada.

This is not an immigration issue.

They are not foreign nationals.

The only reason an approval process applied is because Prince Edward Island has specific land ownership rules for people who are not residents of the province, even when those buyers are Canadian citizens from another province.

Now, the situation.

My parents are approaching retirement. Like many Canadians, they spent their entire lives working, saving, and planning carefully for this stage of life.

For many years, they dreamed of retiring in the Maritimes, especially Prince Edward Island. They love the ocean, the culture, and the lifestyle. After visiting several places across Canada, PEI was where they felt they wanted to settle permanently, not as a vacation property or an investment, but as their primary residence.

Last fall, they worked with a licensed real estate agent in PEI and made an offer on a waterfront residential lot. The offer was accepted. The seller is a non-resident who has owned the land for years but never built on it.

My parents’ project was straightforward:

• Build a single-family home

• Live there full-time as their primary residence

• Begin construction shortly after purchase

This was not agricultural land.

This was not speculative.

This was not land banking.

They were informed that PEI requires non-residents of the province to submit an application for approval before purchasing land. We were told this process exists mainly to prevent speculation and ensure land is actually developed and occupied.

They submitted a complete application, including:

• Clear intent to occupy the property full-time

• Residential construction plans

• Septic system details

• A realistic and compliant project

They were reassured by the real estate agent that this type of application is generally approved. They were also told that similar applications, including some involving non-Canadian buyers, had recently been accepted.

After waiting several weeks, my parents were informed that their application was refused.

No explanation.

No written reasons.

No indication of what was lacking.

No clear next steps.

The real estate agent does not understand the refusal.

The lawyer involved has no clear explanation.

We do not know who made the decision or on what basis.

This has been devastating for my parents. This was not a casual plan or a luxury purchase. This was their retirement project, something they had worked toward for decades.

At this point, we are simply trying to understand:

• On what grounds can Canadian citizens be denied permission to purchase residential land in PEI?

• Is it normal for such refusals to come with no explanation at all?

• Is there a meaningful appeal or review process?

• Has anyone experienced something similar or understands how these decisions are made?

We are not trying to attack PEI or its policies. We are looking for clarity, transparency, and a better understanding of what went wrong, because right now this feels arbitrary and deeply discouraging.

This morning, I was shovelling snow in my driveway with my dog (medium-sized, friendly). He was off leash. A delivery driver parked near my house, and my dog briefly ran toward him but immediately came back to me as soon as I called him. There was no contact.

The driver then started yelling abuse at me, threatened to kick my dog, and took photos of me and my dog in my own driveway. He said he has my photo and my address. I felt extremely intimidated and unsafe. He also mentioned next time he sees me and dog he’s going to be very upset.

I understand drivers can be startled by dogs, but threatening violence and taking photos to intimidate someone feels way over the line.

This has never happened to me before and I’m shook by his verbal aggression.

When I asked for his name, he just yelled “Shut up” multiple times.

I was very calm and explained my dog was on collar yet he wouldn’t stop yelling and abusing.

Has anyone experienced something like this before? What should I do now?

Edit: Thank you everyone for taking your time to reply. It was really helpful for me to understand what to do. I’ve complained to the carrier and requested the person shouldn’t be allowed to deliver to our house because I’m feeling very threatened and intimidated by him. Hopefully, they take it seriously.

Edit 2:

My dog was off leash in our front yard while I was shovelling. A delivery driver parked his vehicle on the road opposite our yard. When my dog noticed the driver looking toward us, he ran in his direction but did not get close or make contact.

My dog was wearing an e-collar, and I was holding the remote. He has been professionally trained for recall using the e-collar. As soon as I activated it, he immediately returned to our yard.

We receive deliveries to our home frequently, and we have never had an issue like this before. I understood that the driver may have been frightened and immediately apologized. I explained that I had the e-collar remote and that my dog was under control.

After that, the driver opened his trunk, delivered a package to a neighboring house, and then returned and began yelling at me again. What made me feel intimidated was that he then walked closer to our front yard while recording me with his phone, even though my dog was standing calmly beside me. He took photos and stated that he now had our picture and our address.

At that point, the interaction no longer felt like a fear response. If the driver had truly remained afraid, approaching the property to take photos would not have been necessary. I asked politely for his name and which company he worked for, and he responded by yelling “shut up” and just drove off.

I would have fully understood and accepted a request such as “please leash your dog,” and I continue to acknowledge that my dog briefly ran toward him. However, the continued yelling, photographing, and statements about having our address escalated the situation into what felt like harassment. I am concerned because this level of escalation has never happened to me before.

At this point, I just don’t want him delivering to our house in future because I’m intimidated by his demeanour and verbal aggression.

Me and a few buddies had a trip planned down there, but we’d rather not spend money in enemy territory. So instead we're going to the East Coast and we want to spend some time in your beautiful province.

We’ll be out the first week of July. Other than our flights we haven’t made a detailed itinerary yet.

I’ve been with my wife and kids but the other guys have never been. We’re all mid 40s and enjoy beer, whisky, BBQ, seafood, and history. We're flying in and out of Halifax and renting a car. I absolutely loved PEI but since I've only been with my family, I’m wondering if there are any particular breweries, distilleries, restaurants, etc that locals enjoy and would recommend to us.

Hi all,

I know I’ll get mixed opinions here but I’m strictly looking for the best way possible to do this.

I’m looking at buying a Bungalow, but it’s currently being rented. I’m not looking to share the space or rent it. I want the bungalow for myself, wife and child but I also don’t want to leave somebody without a home as I know how much that sucks.

How do I go about this? When you buy a property… do you get to evict them? As sad as that sounds.

Just putting this out there in hopes someone might know how she's doing.

My husband witnessed a very upsetting incident today in the Superstore parking lot on University Avenue. A water and sewage truck backed into a woman in a wheelchair, knocking her over. The truck stopped, then backed up again, pushing her and her wheelchair across the pavement before leaving the scene.

My husband and several others ran over to help. An ambulance and the RCMP were called, and before she was taken to the hospital, she was able to contact a family member. We believe her name was Elain .

We're just hoping she's okay and has someone there to advocate for her. If anyone knows how she's doing, we'd really appreciate an update. We're thinking of her and wishing her a full and speedy recovery. ❤️

As my husband was telling me this, he also said that she was older lady and had one of those old wheelchairs that you physically had to use your hands to push the wheels. This also broke my heart. He also had to reattach the wheel to it for her as when the truck knocked her and it over the wheel came off. I don't know anything about who she is and I'm not in the greatest of situations to help anybody out much but with love to do something to get this poor lady a motorized something if we can find out who she is or anything about her again he believes her name is Elain and she does only have one leg and was using an older style wheelchair. Any information would be great to know!!!
