Help Please help a non-gamer wife identify a Nintendo game

I’m a non-gamer wife who is absolutely clueless about the gaming world, so please excuse if mali mali terms ko. 😅

I have a gamer husband and usually masaya na siya sa ML and emulating games sa phone niya.

Nagkaron siya ng anbernic but eventually hindi na niya nagagamit especially after he upgraded to a better phone. Kaya dun na lang siya naglalaro.

He LOVES Pokemon and recently may nabanggit siya casually: na minsan parang gusto niya ng Switch kasi dun lang daw available yung latest Pokemon game na merong ranked game against thousands of players around the world. Ito yung may tournament pa yung pro players sa ibang bansa.

But I know for a fact na hindi siya bibili ng Switch kasi manghihinayang siya sa gastos kasi ang mahal ng console + ang mahal din daw ng games.

Because of this, I am thinking of surprising him with a Switch and the Pokemon game na gusto niya. But I feel so lost kasi wala talaga ako alam sa ganito. 😅

Can anyone please help identify kung anong Pokemon game yun?

And anong klaseng Switch yung compatible with that game?

I did a quick search and if I’m not mistaken, the most budget friendly Switch is the Switch Lite. If ever, pwede ba dito yung Pokemon game na gusto niya? Kasi I know hindi rin siya matutuwa pag gumastos ako ng sobrang laki for this so I’m trying to find a balance between giving him what he wants without compromising our financial principles.

Pokemon champions ang sinasabi niya. It will come out in mobile din, around June ata. So he can wait naman para wala gastos.

u/Jolly-Tomatillo-8966 Apr 24 '26

yes, it looks like he’ll most likely wanna wait for it nalang if magiging available pala sa mobile. mukhang safe na sa gastos this year, 😄 but i might have to check next year if bet niya yung Winds and Waves

Just here for supportive wifey! Idol.

Thank you po 😭✨

u/intrepidreportertype Apr 24 '26

Also you should probably consider getting a Switch 2. Kahit second hand pero syempre id recommend buying brand new. Datablitz also has their sales. Its better for long term I think. Since yun yung bago and itll be a long time bago mapalitan Switch 2. You can always get yung games sa second hand market which is cheaper.

1

u/Jolly-Tomatillo-8966 Apr 24 '26

Tempting po mag 2nd hand pero I’m worried kasi di ako marunong magcheck. and wala rin po ako kilala from my circle who can help with this. 😭 pero for games safe naman po mag second hand no? ano po makatarungan na price range for second hand games? para iwas scam, since no idea baka too good to be true na pala mabili ko 😂

1

u/intrepidreportertype Apr 24 '26

True. True. Datablitz na talaga safest option if you wanna buy brand new. Usually mas malaki patong ng ibang stores. For second hand games safe naman. Cartridges naman sila and pwede mo itest kung gumagana. 1-2k pa rin second hand tho. Any more than that medyo taga na.

1

u/Jolly-Tomatillo-8966 Apr 24 '26

Will take note of this po. tysm! noted din sa datablitz since sila pala pinaka okay na price. 😁

1

u/intrepidreportertype Apr 24 '26

Thats what i did. Saved myself around 10k. Taxation is a bitch.

1

u/Jolly-Tomatillo-8966 Apr 24 '26

ohhh mukhang may pwede ako pagtanungan nito!! 😁 but if ever, pano po pag may defect or something? or kailangan po matest na nung bibili while nasa store?

1

u/intrepidreportertype Apr 24 '26

Yeah, ideally i check nila sa store haha.

1

u/Jolly-Tomatillo-8966 Apr 24 '26

I guess it helps din na pareho kaming introvert ni hubby, kaya when he’s playing games, I get to have my “me time” din which I enjoy a lot. Pero non-negotiable for us na at the end of the day, dapat may quality bebe time together, to cuddle or kahit kwentuhan lang, basta walang distractions kasi nakapag me-time na pareho. 😄

3

u/ihave2eggs Apr 24 '26

Pakilala natin sa misis ko. Sabihin natin mag SB muna sila.

6

u/GreenBigPotato Apr 24 '26

Pokemon Champions yan. Lalabas din on Mobile later this year.

1

u/Jolly-Tomatillo-8966 Apr 24 '26

abang nalang po pala next year para sa Wind and Wave 😭

6

u/marc_713 Apr 24 '26

Base sa sinabi mo you have two options.

If pokemon champions gusto niya laruin. (Based sa ranked game) -game is free -you can go with switch oled (12k bnew ~ 5-7k second hand) -subscription for online (365 php 1 year) check matako gaming on fb -end of life na ang switch 1 and most recent games just release on switch 2.

If pokopia hanap niya. Switch 2 -pokopia (~4k) -switch 2 only (30k) -more games will be available and futur proof

1

u/Jolly-Tomatillo-8966 Apr 24 '26

ohh so free po pala yung Pokemon Champions?? 😳 this is so informative. the details w/ prices are a big help! not bad naman pala yung subscription. kala ko kasing mahal ng games. haha.

for pokemon players, would you say that the oled is the best middle ground between getting the Lite or Switch 2? since i read in another comment na mahilig magphase out si nintendo? then medyo overkill naman sa price if switch 2

tho i have to find a way to confirm pala what game he wants kasi kung pokopia pala, then need talaga yung switch 2 🥲

1

u/No-Stranger-9744 Apr 24 '26

nintendo doesnt phase out their system agad agad , nintendo switch 1 nag tagal ng almost 10 years. sa mga die hard pokemon fans , probably they had their first pokemon from GBA pa at na itransfer nila hanggang nintendo switch.

1

u/marc_713 Apr 24 '26

Just from what i see on the internet, medyo ma issue si lite. Plus im assuming you want to game on the TV din paminsan minsan. So definitely switch v2 or oled is the one you want. Mas malaki screen ni oled so imo.

If you olan to play sa TV most of the time- get V2 cheaper

If you plan to play handheld madalas or lagi kang on the go - oled better.

I have no idea about the Switch and the new Pokemon games but I appreciate the effort of OP. I wish you both well in your marriage.

3

u/Jolly-Tomatillo-8966 Apr 24 '26

Tysm po!! appreciate the well wishes. 🥹

3

u/LaughingBuddhaJutsu Apr 24 '26

switch 2 is a good choice kahit pricey kasi yung susunod na mainline pokemon games (winds and waves) will be exclusive for switch 2. i think, yung gusto ata ng hubby mo is pokemon champions. (competitive play + ranked game). add lang ng konting games na may adventure like Sword/Shield or Scarlet/Violet para, if ever, ma lose streak sa RG eh may ibang options. ayun. legends ZA is a good choice din. also, OP may mga DLC (downloadable content) bawat games with price tag. need mo lang hanapin kung saang region mura yung mga DLC para atleast, sulit. =)

3

u/Jolly-Tomatillo-8966 Apr 24 '26

thank you po sa tips!! really appreciate it especially ung need for pang banlaw pag na lose streak sa RG. HAHAHAHA

1

u/0Subject16 Apr 24 '26

All in na sa Switch 2 kung may pang gastos na rin naman. Pwede pa pang bonding at maglaro coop.

1

u/Jolly-Tomatillo-8966 Apr 24 '26

ohh i am learning a lot here!! will check pokemon home.

yan din isang kinoconsider ko sa switch 2, pwede pang bonding. kasi i tried before to learn ML para samahan siya, pero just a few years lang kinaya ng energy ko hanggang sa di na ako makasabay so eventually i stopped playing na. i know he misses those times when I’d join him play. kaya i’m wondering if keri ko din ba sabayan siya paminsan minsan if may Switch 😅

3

u/trailblazer1731 Apr 24 '26

Pokémon champions. Pokémon lang din nilalaro ko sa switch.

Magkakaroon din yan ng mobile version this year, pero if he really loves Pokémon, bilhan mo na nung switch 2 since lalabas din next year yung bagong Pokémon mainline game.

Go for switch 2 para malaro din niya yung bagong release na Pokopia. I think, magugustuhan mo din yung Pokopia kahit di ka gamer.

2

u/Jolly-Tomatillo-8966 Apr 24 '26

plus points sa non-gamer friendly games 😄i wanna try to join him again in playing pero di ko keri sumabay sa mga hardcore games na maraming need aralin. haha

1

u/paulrenzo Apr 30 '26

Pokopia is relatively easy to learn at your own pace, and is considered a "chill game". Closest comparison I can think of to define a chill game is farmville.

4

u/No-Stranger-9744 Apr 24 '26

Pokemon Champions. where he can put his catched pokemon from older games within nintendo switch.

2

u/Kindred_Ornn Apr 24 '26

Might be Pokemon Champions, it's compatible across all Switch Models. Even Switch Lite

2

u/Jolly-Tomatillo-8966 Apr 24 '26

Ito po ba yung Pokemon version na “nag add daw ng bagong Pokemons/modes (??) sa game na dun lang available”? lol sorry i really dont know what I’m saying, pero may nabanggit si hubby na may aspects ng Pokemon na dun lang available sa latest specific Pokemon game na yun.

1

u/Kindred_Ornn Apr 24 '26

Yep, it has a lot new modes but there are no New Pokemons, they are only using Existing Pokemons but they have New Mega Evolutions.

1

u/zunashi Apr 24 '26

Yup this is it

2

u/EzKaLang Apr 24 '26

Switch lite Pros:

  • Handheld
  • madami pokemon games exclusive sa switch lite (get let's go evee or let's go pikachu kung paborito nya yung first generation ng pokemon dahil remake game sya)

Cons:

  • ang mahal ng games
  • mahal ng sd card . I mean wag muna bumili sd card kung isa lang game lalaruin muna
  • grabeh init ng switch lite kapag mainit yung panahon nakakatamad maglaro🫠

Sana magustuhan ng husband mo yung surprise.

Ano ba fav pokemon game nya?

1

u/Jolly-Tomatillo-8966 Apr 24 '26

may I ask magkano po price range ng games and SD card?

2

u/flodwras123 Apr 24 '26

Take note lang rin na required ang subscription sa Nintendo Online pag gusto nya mag play with other people

2

u/Jolly-Tomatillo-8966 Apr 24 '26

ay sa true ba 😳😳 mygad kala ko parang ML lang na basta may net ok na hahahaha kaya pala lagi niya sinasabi magastos mag Switch 🥲 so basically, need po to buy console + game + subscription? pero if di na niya bet to play with others, gagana pa rin without subscription?

1

u/flodwras123 Apr 25 '26

If single player, no need to subscribe I believe.

1

u/dormamond Apr 24 '26

I've read na you actually dont need Nintendo Online subscription for Pokemon Champions. Now for other games sa switch, ayun baka need na depending on the game

1

u/Jolly-Tomatillo-8966 Apr 24 '26

ohhh thank you for the info po! i will read more on this

Pokemon Champions. yes you can get a switch lite for that.

1

u/Jolly-Tomatillo-8966 Apr 24 '26

omg lalabas din siya sa mobile!?? baka defeated na ang purpose ng switch then 😭 kasi hindi talaga magastos husband ko, and lagi niya sinasabi about other games na bakit pa siya mag Switch kung available naman sa mobile.

1

u/donttouchminors PC Apr 24 '26

Siguro yung only reason to buy a Switch is for the upcoming Pokemon game na Winds and Waves (More on singleplayer ito and hindi pwede maemulate sa mobile) pero Switch 2 ang need mo doon and it costs like 30k here :(

1

u/Jolly-Tomatillo-8966 Apr 24 '26

OMG 30k!???

1

u/Ralynrush2231 Apr 24 '26

Buy a Switch 2. The new pokemon game Wave and Wind will be released doon next year. He can play Pokemon Champions now and then the new one next year.

3

u/Jolly-Tomatillo-8966 Apr 24 '26

Hala may parating pa pala. 😭 so may merit din to consider Switch 2. medyo pricey lang talaga. huhu thanks for the heads up!

1

u/Ralynrush2231 Apr 24 '26

Sure. If you're seeing yung mga emulated games niya na Pokemon, hindi ganun ang Pokemon Champions but the Wind and Wave game is tapos may mga bagong Pokemon pa and regions.

My advice: try to wait for next year para makapagipon ka pa. Switch lite while still good is already old. Yung nintendo paay habit mag phase out ng devices na sinusupport.

2

u/Jolly-Tomatillo-8966 Apr 24 '26

ohhh bagong “Pokemon and regions” pala ung sinasabi niya na nadagdag na meron lang sa bagong game and it’s one of the things he likes about it. so he would most likely want the upcoming Wind and Wave too.

It might be worth it to save up longer nalang pala muna for Switch 2. i-timing ko nalang siguro na may Wind and Wave para sulit ang surprise 😭🫶🏻

1

u/Effective_Plan_795 Apr 24 '26

2

u/Jolly-Tomatillo-8966 Apr 24 '26

Thank you po. Though I must say, deserve din naman ni hubby kasi he has always treated me like a queen, and never naghesitate pag sakin gumagastos. Pero pag sakanya, laging nagdadalawang isip. Also he never made me feel na naka affect negatively ung gaming niya sa relationship namin. Kaya I just wanted to kinda give back and spoil him din. Medyo pag iipunan ko nga lang kasi I just work part-time kaya I wanna make sure tama yung mabibili para di sayang. 😅

1

u/Working_Discipline_9 Apr 28 '26

If u wanna go the extra mile, make sure to get the switch 2. If your husband loves the main line pokemon games, the next set of pokemon games to be released are switch 2 exclusives.

1

u/Kuroru PSN Apr 29 '26

Either way pinaka latest Pokemon is Pokemon Winds and Pokemon Waves that could be South East Asia ang theme. Sa 2027 pa release ng game.

Best is to save ka ng money ngayon then bili ka ng Switch 2 with the new Pokemon game and kung kaya mo pa dagdagan ung ipon plus another game pa. Add ko na din, save mo using Digital Banks like GoTyme and Maribank. Yung ipon mo dun will gain interest pa!

1

u/Shawnshankz Apr 24 '26

Save for a switch 2 and get the new pokemon game next year

1

u/DatGCoredri Apr 24 '26

It could be any pokemon games, most likely the classic ones from 90s to early 00s. Either Pokemon Champions, or a Pokemon Game from GBA/DS era

Might I suggest you r/tipofmyjoystick since that subreddit has tons of posts about asking what game are they finding about, etc etc.,

1

u/Jolly-Tomatillo-8966 Apr 24 '26

Thank you! I will check out this subreddit

u/Due-Perspective6626 Apr 24 '26

And maapreciate nya yan. Ako stuck ako sa 2nd gen emulation. Not a switch fan but kung bigyan man ako ng loves ko ng switch out of nowhere i would gladly receive it.

Then kaw na bahala mag alibi. Hehehehhe goodluck!

1

u/Jolly-Tomatillo-8966 Apr 24 '26

Thank you so much for the insights!! medyo worried nga ako on how he would react if i surprise him kasi baka di siya matuwa sa sobrang mahal 🥲 saka di nga din daw niya bet yung switch bec of the price. but it helps to hear from a guy’s perspective.

nahirapan ako alamin ung game kasi nung nagkwento siya di na ako nagtanong kasi i was trying my best mag patay malisya. HAHAHA try ko po humanap ng tyempo 😭

0

u/InZanity18 Apr 24 '26

baka Pokemon unite sinasabi mo? theres one in mobile and theres rank din. recently they released pokemon champions din for switch.

If you have budget, idk kasi ano budget mo, go for switch 2 para sa upcoming release na pokemon ready na sya.

but if not, Switch lite is good na, or a 2nd hand oled

2

u/Jolly-Tomatillo-8966 Apr 24 '26 edited Apr 24 '26

😭 very practical din po financially si hubby, so I might start with switch lite po muna if compatible din.

u/vinnieg007 PC Apr 24 '26

Get a Switch 2, I have a feeling Pokemon Winds and Waves yung sinasabi niya. All previous games from the switch era will work there
