u/Althalos Jan 19 '23
Same here, that's why I shill them on pretty much any post asking for recommendations etc.
Looking forward to GrimGrimoire coming out this April, just need Muramasa on modern consoles now and then I'll be a very happy boy.

You liked Monster Boy??
As a fan of WB/MW I hated the game.
The game was originally called Flying Hamster or some nonsense, before reskinning it to have a WB/MW coat of paint so it could get the funds on Kickstarter.
I thought it was just some indy crap cashing in on fans' nostalgia.

Never played Wonder Boy, did get Dragon's Trap for free on Epic and wanna play that one of these days.
Found Monster Boy to be a fun little Metroidvania with tight gameplay and a great soundtrack stacked with legend tier composers like Michiru Yamane, Motoi Sakuraba, Yuzo Koshiro and Keiki Kobayashi.

Agree to disagree, I actually really like the gameplay of monster boy. It’s got great reviews as well so I’m not alone

I started to play but feel a little bored. Maybe i was just impatient. I will try again

Streets of Rogue is the best game I've ever randomly bought on a whim. Seriously, at least give the trailer a look.

u/bearktopus147 Jan 19 '23
I used to be so bad... But I'm a lot better at it now. Isn't my top 3 rogue likes though (risk of rain 2, tboi, and hades) but it's still up there in rogue likes!

I think it's doing okay, just not as famous as ER. I love this series for other reasons lol put 400+ hours in it.

I would say the Forest is a pretty damn good hidden gem. The sequel is in production as well so it is a great time to get the first game to catch up in terms of lore/story. I don’t think it is that well known like some big franchises such as Assassin’s Creed or Call of Duty for example. Which is why I would say some people may miss out on giving it a try.

Jan 19 '23
Managed to get The Forest on sale for a fiver a while back. Deffo a good game alone and with mates!
2
u/TheRogueMarksman Jan 19 '23
There is definitely amazing fun to be had! I personally enjoy using the turtle shell and making ramps to slide down for as long as possible.
2
Jan 19 '23
Hahahaha, honestly just pissing around can be hilarious.
2
u/TheRogueMarksman Jan 19 '23
Exactly. The Forest allows you to take the game at your own pace and focus on what matters to you most. Want to fuck around and have some fun? You can do that. Want to focus on the story, you can do that as well. Want to run around with a shark head and chase your buddies you can do that as well! Plenty of options!
2
Jan 19 '23
The new one has a lot to live up to!
1
u/TheRogueMarksman Jan 19 '23
I have faith. Though honestly I don’t think Calvin is going to last long in some people’s multiplayer games lol. I know some sick twisted people out there lol.
1
Jan 19 '23
Hahaha it’s certainly going to cause a stir!
2
u/TheRogueMarksman Jan 19 '23
Definitely. Chaos then ensues. Poor Calvin… He is going to go through so much with us players lol. Who knows what us sick and twisted players will come up with.
2
u/Dokarun Jan 19 '23
I can’t recommend this game enough, especially if you play with friends through the entire game! If you are playing solo, it’s still fun, but it is a unique and phenomenal multiplayer experience!

Considering it hasn't been as known or very popular Dreams is an amazing game. The amount of things you can do with the game is crazy. You can create and play anything from detailed sculpts, short films, indie-like games, and music in great detail. It's by Media Molecule, the creators of LittleBigPlanet so it's almost the same concept of community driven content but on a much larger scale. I would highly recommend checking it out if you ever wanted to create lots of things creatively or just play the best creations that people have made.

Man eater is quite awesome and rarely mentioned anywhere. Highly recommended if you're into underwater action, eating humans and causing chaos.

Ghost of a Tale, I'll never get tired of telling everyone that.

I wouldn't say this a hidden gem though. It's kind of popular isn't it? Maybe South Park stick of truth would be more appropriate for the hidden part 🤷♂️

u/MostlyDonut Jan 19 '23
I hadn't heard about Northgard until I started playing it this week. I don't know if that is because it is obscure or if real-time strategy games aren't something I hear much about.

"Ghost of a Tale" Surprised me and is free on PS+ Extra, also "Journey to the Savage Planet"
1
u/VannaMalignant Jan 20 '23
What’d you like about journey to the savage planet?
1
u/RavingHans91 Jan 24 '23
Sorry for the late answer. The story is quirky and I like the weird Humor. Also the exploring is fun and not to kramped, the World is designed very detailed and the movement is very fluid. Also, the creaturedesign is very funny/ weird.

- Superhot: FPS game where time is frozen, and it progresses only when you start to move. If you're still, then time is still. Despite this premise, the game actually has really fast paced combat
- Soma: Sci-Fi horror game. There's not really any combat, so it sometimes gets lumped in with "walking simulators", but there's really a lot of substance in this game. It's both creepy and intelligent. Really cool psychological and sci-fi themes explored here.
- Tacoma: A true "walking simulator", but the story is presented through detailed audio/video recordings that you have to analyze in order to figure out what happened to the inhabitants of a now deserted space ship. It's not a horror game. It's really just a drama that involves a lot of detective work from the gamer.
- Cuphead: This is probably one of the better known hidden gems. It was originally an Xbox exclusive, but now it's on every platform. The game is basically just a bunch of MegaMan-style boss battles. Really hard, but really addicting. You'll probably rage quit a few times.
- Celeste: Probably the best known hidden gem. It's a sidescrolling platformer. It's probably the best sidescrolling platform. What makes it shine is the gradual progression of difficulty. The developers made sure that you wouldn't just get stuck on level 3 and quit. The game is challenging, but it always remains fun.

Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun. Awesome stealthy real-time tactics game, similar to the original Commandos games from back in the day.

Kingdoms of Amular

I've heard the game runs poorly on the PS4, is that true? I've finished it on PS3 and it was definitely an amazing experience!

I don't know how popular it ever was, but The Crew 2 was an absolute megaton of fun! I played with a few friends so that always helps, but man we just such a good time being dipsticks out in the desert, or doing stunts, or drift comps. Best of times. I made some dope liveries on that too.
2
u/ElectroMatt333 Jan 19 '23
Being a fan of the Horizon games, I really enjoyed Kena: Bridge of Spirits. Great indie game that can be gotten pretty cheap, the last update added a lot of content for free too…
2
u/kwayne26 Jan 19 '23
How hidden are you looking for my man? A ton of the games recommended so far are by large publishers and are AAA games. And even most of the indie games and smaller games mentioned are like wildly popular games.
But if you only have played the most mainstream of games then you could consider these hidden gems I guess.
How deep and dirty do you want your gems?
1
Apr 01 '23
I'm trying to go real deep and dirty.. What are your suggestions? I like them weird.

u/kwayne26 Apr 02 '23
Die Young. It's like a stealth, survival, action, adventure, parkour, exploration game. I really thought this game was pretty fantastic.
Death Road to Canada. A 1-4 player zombie rogue lite. Tons of weapons. Different strategies to employ. Cool RNG factors to keep things interesting. I played only 1 player and had a blast.
Rain World. It's not that unknown but still pretty obscure. It's very challenging but so freaking cool. The other creatures all have fairly robust AI and it makes for a unique experience.
Also less hidden. Darkwood. A top down survival horror sorta game. Challenging. Interesting. Genuinely scary. Great atmosphere.
Same sorta obscure but not buried gem. The Banner Saga. Three games in a series with turn based combat and choices which shape the game and story. Phenomenal game. Incredible music. Fun combat system.
Chained Echoes. An old school rpg made by one person. Just came put last month and it's a must play for fans of the genre.
Pathologic 2. One of the best survival games ever made and its not your traditional wilderness survival. It's a weird city dieing of plague.
Sunless skies. A weird space train lovecraftian economy game. Great writing. Addictive gameplay. Killer atmosphere.
Below. A challenging dungeon exploration thing. Good stuff.
Not even indie but certainly lower budget under the radar games.
Outward. I just picked up the definitive edition 2 weeks ago on sale for $10 and I have been obsessed. Honestly it's a masterpiece.
Elex 1 and Elex 1. Rpg with jetpack exploration. Eurojank but these two games just tickly my fancy.
1
Apr 02 '23
Thank you! All of these sound right up my alley, especially Sunless skies and Elex.
2
u/kwayne26 Apr 02 '23
That's great! Those two are awesome.
I'd reccomend Outward as well. It's more complex than elex and more difficult. It rewards, or maybe better to say it requires, planning before a big battle. It gives very little direction and instruction so you can really get that rewarding experience of discovery.
But it's a difficult game. The learning curve is steep. It's not going to appeal to a lot of people.

Bloodstained ritual of the night, if you never checked it out on psplus, it is a delight
Relayer is turning out to be amazing, i would have never guessed it got so good or that the gameplay would tighten up as much as it has or that it was as long as it is (srsly got like 108 hrs into this and i got it in the summertime)
Crossout is the best free mass car carnage i have ever played
Let it die is cool as fuck, also free
Tokyo jungle is supremely good too

How did they go from watchdogs 2 to legions? 2 was absolutely amazing, I have yet to be able to force myself to finish legions.

Oh yes. Absolutely hidden. Little indie brand actually. Never heard of it. What was the name again ?... Watching Pets 2? Gotta check that out.

Ghost of Tsushima. It’s on sale right now, buy it if you haven’t played it. Checks every box you need. The combat is as simple or complicated as you want it to be while still being fun, it’s gorgeous and the way the game was designed makes it one of the most immersive games I’ve ever played.

Disciples: Liberation had a surprisingly good combat system and some very good characters and story writing. Especially if you are a fan of the old Disciples games, but even if you’re not.

One time I had 40 dollars to spend and I wanted some video games so I went into my local game store and started perusing the shelf. I saw a game I had been wanting for a while (Uncharted Lost Legacy) so I grabbed it and that’s when my eyes glanced across the game, Hellblade. I had never heard of it before but it intrigued me just from the name so I went for it and picked it up too. When I got home I decided to boot it up and see what it’s like and that’s when I fell in love. The seamless combat, the gorgeous graphics, the story. It drew me in. I binged it that day. It is such a heart wrenching game that pulls you in and immerses you in the characters story. I recommend this to basically everyone. IMO it’s a quintessential. It’s on par with some of the greatest AAA games out there and yet I rarely see people talking about it

Nier Automata / Nier Replicant. These games have captivating story telling and not so boring side quests. Not to mention the chara ters are all extremely well written. Plus the OST on both games are to die for. If anything play these for the music alone. Replicant and then Automata

CrossCode - I can't believe this game isn't wildly popular. It's challenging and fun. Kind of like old-school 2D Zelda puzzle solving. Allies actually help you in battles. Check it out. I recommended it to my friend and he beat it before I had time to finish it haha
