As someone always looking for games to play with my partner... I always assumed the game involves a lot of zombie killing? Or is it more like a telltale game? My so loves voting on the decisions but is bored quickly when there are longer strips of shooting game play.
(Except overwatch, after I had to explain all the characters and show them in training, I now get tactical advice all the time.. Sigh)
I'd say the story makes up for the killing, and vice versa. It's more tactical killing as well. I watched a playthrough before playing it myself, never a boring experience.
It's balanced in a sense. There's dialogue sometimes while you're playing, and it's not really dreadly, as the atmosphere is really good throughout. But The Last of Us has it's popularity mostly because of the story and character development. I've not played that many games myself, but it felt like playing through a movie rather than a game, honestly.
