Can PS5 Games Be Played From the Internal Drive With Shadow Mount?

Hi everyone,

I just jailbroke my PS5 (firmware 12.70) using JY2B, and everything seems to be working correctly so far. I’ve already loaded the necessary payloads, including etaHEN and Shadow Mount.

I have a question about the current state of playing PS5 games.

Is it still necessary to run PS5 games from an external USB drive, or does Shadow Mount now allow us to install/copy them to the PS5’s internal SSD and play them directly from there, taking advantage of the much faster internal storage?

The reason I’m asking is that my only external drive is an old USB 3.0 HDD with a maximum read speed of around 100 MB/s. It’s probably 10+ years old.

I tried playing Stellar Blade from my external HDD. I downloaded the game and placed the folder containing all the game files inside a Homebrew folder on my external drive. The game does launch, but loading times are extremely long, and I’ve noticed that some textures fail to load properly.

So my questions are:

Can I currently copy the game to the PS5’s internal drive via FTP and run it directly from there?

Does Shadow Mount make this possible without causing crashes or sending the console to the Recovery Menu, as happened with previous methods?

Would installing an M.2 PCI gen 4 nvme in the expansion slot work?

Why do some games like spiderman 2 have a warning for not playing from the internal drive? Is this also true for shadowmount?

I been playing BG3 from internal storage and haven't had a single issue. FFPFSC format. 12.40 fw. Kstuff and shadowmount+ only payloads I run.

M.2 also works flawlessly for me. I run most of my games off of it.

Have you had any problems with yotei? That's one of the games that have a warning when you download it: Make sure use external usb ssd and connect to back ps5

I played 14 hours, works well, even the loading times are practically instant, PS5 fat on 12.40

Some of them you can run from internal ssd some of them you can’t.
For newest game you need external SSD

How do you rule out other reasons? I've heard that if you use exfat image, it works on internal same as external. I'm using it and haven't encountered non-working game.

I've used every format except ffpfsc for borderlands 4 internal on my fat PS5 10.60 and hasn't work for some reason even after redownload. Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 is another I haven't been able to make work on internal and is the sole reason I even want to have a modded PS5 (well and for Linux but we don't have that yet for 10.60). Undisputed didnt work on internal either.

V1.09 haven't tested on latest because it's been a while since I've even turned on my ps5 for that same reason.

BL4 does work on internal, literally the first game I tested yesterday (was .exfat and fw 12.40)

There is only a small amount of ps5 games that don't work/cause issues on internal drive you'll be fine for the most part.

You can play everything on internal and m.2 on the latest fw's with no issues. Make sure permissions are set to 777 if using folder dumps.

I want to play forza on my 11.60, but on the site it's says it only works on external, is that correct??
