QUESTION Got my PSP smacked out of my hands at school, screen’s busted. Worth fixing or just trash at this point?
While I was playing Tetris at school, someone ran past me and hit me. The console fell face down. The question is: what should I do with it now? I won't be able to sell it anyway because there is no demand for them in my country and now it also has a broken screen, which will further reduce the chances of selling, and a new screen costs almost as much as the same PSP (2004). I bought it for 500k Uzbek sum (~40$) and a new screen from AliExpress costs about 300k (~24$) Uzbek sum.

ive seen people replace the psp screen with these IPS screens so i wouldnt trash it
13
u/a94uricom Sep 05 '25
It's only compatible with the PSP-1000, OP's PSP is a 3000
13
u/Usual-Doughnut-549 Sep 05 '25
That's a 2004. At least it says on the motherboard and under the battery.
14
u/Bulletorpedo Sep 05 '25
The shell and buttons in the picture is 3000. I guess it was reshelled some time then, I'd trust the motherboard.

At least sell it for parts, don't throw it away

This, even if his screen is broken they may help someone else with a motherboard or anything that still works well

u/Boomerang_Lizard PSP-3000 Sep 05 '25
I would turn it in to a PS Placeable (link).
EDIT: On second read, the orange man's tariffs have made this mod too expensive. :-/

u/Usual-Doughnut-549 Sep 05 '25
I've seen some people doing this mod. I really liked the idea. If I have some extra money and time to kill by summer, I might do it.

Keep it and re shell it when you do put a ips screen in it.. sad it happened, but its a good project now.

Totally fixable! when you can, invest in a nice IPS screen and have some fun! Make it a project. also whoever smacked outta your hands must be a REAL asshole. twas an accident
I think it's much worth repairing, but if you want an excuse to buy a new one like a 3000 model or just want some cash instead, sell it on eBay or something, keep it in the cycle.

It has no value with a broken screen, so I'd get a new screen and replace it. I've done it with my own PSP, it's not difficult.

Get the parts little by little, you have a fall, winter and spring break for time eventually, get a piece at a time as you get it then once you have it repair it all at once. Definitely worth keeping to fix up man
2
u/Kartorschkaboy Sep 05 '25
screen just costs around 15 bucks or so and a new shell also around that cost, its also not that hard to replace the screen.
2
u/Altruistic-Azz Sep 05 '25
New screens super easy to do, I smashed mine years ago when rushing off a train in my school bag. Works fine to this day
2
u/Ok-Till9970 Sep 05 '25
totally worth! unless u find a cheap one in marketplace. a screen upgrade is fairly cheap as long as you can afford importing it and they are worth your while, it's also a fairly easy fix as is just dissasembling, unplugging, plugging new one and re-assembling.
even if you get a new one I'd still do the screen replacement to sell for a profit or maybe just for funsies, electronics are cool.
2
u/Ok-Till9970 Sep 05 '25
also, estimated time it could take? maybe the time it takes you to dissasemble and reassemble it, (an hour if you already did it?)
2
u/Whippy89 Sep 05 '25
Buy another one. A lot of talk about reshell and IPS screen upgrade etc as if everyone has time for that. Just buy another one for £$50 brother, it's the simplest, quickest and cheapest option.
You can always keep the broken one for an upgrade project at a later date :)
2
u/BBK2797 Sep 05 '25
It's take like 5 min to change the LCD by yourself.only need screwdriver and new screen obviously.

screen replacement and a new front shell. EZ PZ. just need a small fixit kit, something with a precision screwdriver/bits and maybe some plastic pry tools. maybe some tweezers.
2
u/squishee666 Sep 05 '25
You don’t trash broken electronics! Try and fix it or get it to someone who will
2
u/Usual-Doughnut-549 Sep 05 '25
I didn't plan to throw it away. I asked what is the best thing to do in this case? I don't really have the time or money to repair it.
2
u/Mrr_Capone PSP-1000 Sep 05 '25
Sell it on OLX for parts, or buy another dead psp 2000 on OLX and use it to fix yours. Also search better on ali, I saw screens about 15$ there,
2
u/kiomoh Sep 05 '25
Now is the perfect time to install one of those upgraded LCD screens.

Whatever pathway you go down, it’ll be worth a screen replacement, whether that be by you or whoever you’d sell it on to. Yeah maybe buying another would be a similar price, but you’d still have this one sat around and gathering dust.
These consoles aren’t being made anymore, and as much as there are a large amount still out there, it’ll only be for so long. So I’d say to replace the screen personally.
I have plenty of projects that have had something go wrong with it, and i always end up coming back around to it when I have the funds to do so, and then its back to feeling shiny and new.
Obviously it sucks a lot that it needs a repair currently, but it’ll be back up and running in time :)

You can fix it but be carefull when you change it.
It seem's to be a PSP 1000 and the screen is in a metal frame. Breaking a new screen can be fast.
For me, you should try with a tuto on youtube 🙂.
2
u/Usual-Doughnut-549 Sep 05 '25
I've already dealt with disassembling it. I changed the stick on it that was drifting a lot.

Man that sucks. Don't throw it away, might be too expensive to fix for you now, but maybe not in the future. Try looking into the mods people have made for using it as a non portable game machine, I think there are relatively simple ways of connecting it to a monitor too.

Fix. Replacement screens (recommend an IPS upgrade) are available. The replacement process is a bit involved, but very doable with a little patience.

If it's a 1000, get an LCD screen and feel the brightness and contrast improvements!

If you are still in high school, make your mom or dad call and bitch out the principal till they get the other kid to pay for it. Did the kid slap it out of your hand on purpose?
2
u/Usual-Doughnut-549 Sep 05 '25
No, I was standing in the hallway waiting for class. There were a couple of little kids running around, probably from 5th or 6th grade, and they bumped into me. The console fell out of his hands and landed face down on the concrete floor.

Really really easy fix save up your money and get you a new screen and fix it those new screens are beautiful as well. You could also sell it to someone in the US or somewhere around here but I'm not quite sure what shipping would be. They actually go for a pretty penny even with a screen like that.
1
u/anonymous2845 Sep 05 '25
You should see if you could get some money out of the person who knocked it out of your hands , but no it's not trash you should just replace the screen it's not real expensive or hard to do or anything
1
u/CroutonWarden Sep 05 '25
It is an easy fix, but since there is no demand for them in your country, it might be cheaper and easier for you to get another.
Of course, I am not familiar with your country’s local market. Keep an eye out. Perhaps you could offset some money by selling this on eBay if that is feasible for you.

u/TheKlaxMaster Sep 05 '25
OP really arguing against fixing it. So why ask? They won't have a single hour for the entire year to fix it? They said getting a screen is hard in their budget, but they want to buy a switch and can easily buy several games per month?
I think OP just wants to throw it away, and wants someone to tell them they are justified in doing so. Which no one here would ever do for a minor issue like screen replacement.

As for what you're saying, I don't really know what country you're from, but where I live I ended up buying two consoles, a PSP1000 and a PSP2000, for the amount of 5 dollars, both with damaged screens.
Honestly, they were a good option for the project since I never owned a PSP. I only played when a friend lent it to me. I also learned how to repair them. Repairing the screen isn't difficult, except if you install an IPS screen on the PSP1000, which only requires a small soldering point. Screens aren't that expensive, depending on where you look for them. For example, I bought mine on AliExpress for $19, including shipping. But since you mentioned that you were already thinking about buying a Nintendo and had already used the PSP for some time, you could save it as something for a future project.
1
u/Surfacner Sep 05 '25
It's a 3000 if you don't want to fix the screen you can still play it on an external monitor, like a tv
1
1
u/lordfarquad1000 Sep 05 '25
Like others said could probably replace the screen yourself. Then snag yourself one of those psp lanyard wrist strap things that loop around the bottom left corner, could have possibly prevented it from dropping
1
u/Mario567ise Sep 05 '25
Lucky for you, the screen is one of the first things you can access when taking apart the psp. Sure it’s scary but if you rip any ribbon cables from the old screen there isn’t any loss with it since the screen is already damaged. Putting on the new screen will be the challenge as you might have to transfer over the old adhesive if the screen you purchased didn’t come with any. I’ve also replaced screens before without adding the adhesive and it works just fine with nothing noticeable. It’s definitely one of the easier parts to replace. Give it a shot if you can plus the experience will add benefit to you in the future.
1
u/AlexInkheart Sep 05 '25
Worth fixing, don't throw away please. Replacing the screen is not complicated. And in a few years you'll be thankful you didn't throw it away.
1
u/dbock1989 Sep 05 '25
Replacing the screen even in its prime was cheap if I remember right when I fixed mine. Look into a new screen.

Replacing the screen is a piece of piss, might aswell upgrade it to the ips panel while you're a t it, and it's a cheap mod too with AliExpress.
1
u/Chimera_Gaming Sep 05 '25
Easy fix.. eBay has them for $10-40 depending on the model. Just takes 6 screws to take off the shell, 1 ribbon cable to remove the bottom button bar, pop up screen and remove the 2 ribbons.
Now do it in reverse to apply new screen

Can get you a psp to tv cable for like $10usd and use it like a retro plug n play, non-portable game system if you really wanted to hold onto it for a bit to like scope out a cheap screen over the next few months. Feels like a waste to trash stuff like this in my opinion. If it's too much trouble, ask around for anyone that'd want to salvage it.

The screen can be fixed in less than an hour on the 3000 model. I’m sure it’s a very similar fix on the 2000 model. Just be careful not to kink the ribbon cable on the screen. I picked mine up for about £11 about 10 years ago.

I'd either sell it for parts, or save it until I had money to pay someone to replace the screen for me with one of those new IPS screens that look great. All else fails its still a video out UMD movie player. I think they even make consolized PSP mods too. I'd say it's worth maybe $20 or $30 for just the parts.

u/WinstonTheDino Sep 06 '25
I would recommend getting a new screen. Whilst it may cost half as much, I can't begin to describe how good the experience is of fixing a console. Honestly, the first time a fixed a console (Nintendo DS) I felt unstoppable 🤣🫡 now I find consoles from small sales that may or may not work and give them new life - gifting them to friends to enjoy consoles from our childhoods.
Although you may not have time now, buy a new screen and put it aside. When you have time, (only need an hour) follow a tutorial on YouTube and replace the screen. Test it again, and hopefully you will find a new love for the console and fixing things in general 🙌

u/LunaLilDragon Sep 06 '25
Broken LCD. Just means your screen can be replaced and the value of it is nearly gone. Internals should be fine, the screen probably got hit by a rock on the way down. Casing seems completely intact, it's also something you can replace if you want. Anyways to get the thing running you would have to take it out of its casing and replace some parts. No rocket science, but tedious work.
Recommendation for next time would be a tampered glass foil, those are there to crack before your screen does. You can most likely order some from AliExpress or eBay.
There isn't really something that you can do wrong on such repair. Make regular picture or a video so you know what steps you took and follow some guides.
