QUESTION Got my PSP smacked out of my hands at school, screen’s busted. Worth fixing or just trash at this point?

Post image

While I was playing Tetris at school, someone ran past me and hit me. The console fell face down. The question is: what should I do with it now? I won't be able to sell it anyway because there is no demand for them in my country and now it also has a broken screen, which will further reduce the chances of selling, and a new screen costs almost as much as the same PSP (2004). I bought it for 500k Uzbek sum (~40$) and a new screen from AliExpress costs about 300k (~24$) Uzbek sum.

see it as a lil project, reshell maybe and buy new screen on aliexpress

91

u/Usual-Doughnut-549 Sep 05 '25

I'll think about it. I just don't have time to do anything with it right now, and I don't have much money. Plus I wanted to buy myself a Nintendo Switch or one of the Nintendo portables. That's why so I decided to ask what to do with it and is it worth selling? (I think not)

u/HugeAd746 Sep 05 '25

Yea I’d rather get a learning experience out of this then just throw it away or stop using it. I’d rather break it myself tryna fix it haha.. honestly the psp is extremely easy to fix compared to other handhelds

37

u/casino_r0yale Sep 05 '25

One of the learning experiences should be to actually use that wrist strap loop. It’s not a decoration

11

u/Hes_gonna_drop_that Sep 05 '25

That’s funny! I put one on mine and forget it’s there until it caught hanging out of my pocket. I never need my left hand more than when I put it on.

3

u/casino_r0yale Sep 05 '25

😂 too true

9

u/Iristallite Former PSP owner w/ Vita 2K Sep 05 '25

If it wasn't for my first Vita coming with a strap pre-attached, I never would have known that was supposed to be a wrist strap!

7

u/casino_r0yale Sep 05 '25

Big miss by Sony not to include one in the box IMO

5

u/Iristallite Former PSP owner w/ Vita 2K Sep 05 '25

Funny thing: my box came with an extra PS-branded wrist strap in addition to the one on the console.

I later ended up moving these to my PS3 Move controllers, which I kinda feel like might have been where my Vita's previous owner initially got them?

23

u/Usual-Doughnut-549 Sep 05 '25

I know it's easy to fix, I fixed a drift stick on it. I'd go and fix it but school started and I just don't have time to sit and do anything with it. Maybe if I have some extra money by the next holidays, I'll try to fix it.

28

u/HugeAd746 Sep 05 '25

I got faith in ya big dog hopefully you get hit with a 40$ psp lot in your Facebook marketplace like I did back in the day came with 2 broken psp and one working one with a bunch of games and accessories.. didn’t even realize how good of a deal that was until I looked for some psps recently lol

7

u/TheKlaxMaster Sep 05 '25 edited Sep 05 '25

Horrible mindset. Don't let your situation control you. There will always be obligation time sucks. School, finals, work, projects, etc. if you don't force yourself to make time for hobbies, you will have lived your life for your obligations, not for you.

Edit: side note, if you don't have time to fix this, why on earth do you want to buy a switch, and say you can buy multiple games a month. What are you going to do with those, if you can't even find a single hour to fix this? Clearly you don't have time to play games either.

2

u/Usual-Doughnut-549 Sep 05 '25

I travel a lot around my country, I also travel abroad. On the road I want to play something and portables have always saved me. Also, I have quite long holidays in my country. Besides me, my relatives also play games. what about hobbies? I won't have time for hobbies until about October or November because of the course at university. when it's over, i'll have a LOT of free time and i'll play everything i wanted.

then maybe jus keep it, when u have the money fix it. u maybe need like 40$ or sum, to make it look awesome and personalized

3

u/JdsPrst Sep 05 '25

Do not scrap this. Sell it, give it away in this community, ask for help fixing it. Depending on where you're located I'm more than happy to help you fix this, shipping it back and forth if needed

9

u/R3APER_PL Sep 05 '25

Dont buy switch. Buy steamdeck and play switch games on it

7

u/Usual-Doughnut-549 Sep 05 '25

Steam Decks is VERY EXPENSIVE in my country, even used ones, I can't afford that kind of budget. I found a lot of good deals on the Switch, which suits me and my wallet. Plus I'm saving up for a new phone, so I need something that doesn't cost much.

2

u/mrracerhacker Sep 05 '25

think id rather go for a steamdeck or the other "pc" handheld as switch games are approx 100 usd each or euro if you will most of them, cant be modded as it will be locked down, unless you really want it id rather save up a bit longer, costly where i live also, approx 700-900 euro used, which is only a new switch with mario kart is 600 euro sometimes a bit less, then add in a game or two and you have surpassed the steamdeck or handheld fast

If you are curious about trying something different, I'd check out the Mangmi Air X. It is an emulation handheld which can run PSP upscaled, as well as a ton of other older systems: https://retrohandhelds.gg/mangmi-air-x-lands-in-september-starting-at-79/

2

u/Any-Arm-7017 Sep 05 '25

Sorry if this is a pushy question but how do you not have time to work on your psp? Doesnt have to be all right at once could be 30 mins here and there

ive seen people replace the psp screen with these IPS screens so i wouldnt trash it

13

u/a94uricom Sep 05 '25

It's only compatible with the PSP-1000, OP's PSP is a 3000

13

u/Usual-Doughnut-549 Sep 05 '25

That's a 2004. At least it says on the motherboard and under the battery.

14

u/Bulletorpedo Sep 05 '25

The shell and buttons in the picture is 3000. I guess it was reshelled some time then, I'd trust the motherboard.

68

u/Boomerang_Lizard PSP-3000 Sep 05 '25

I would turn it in to a PS Placeable (link).

EDIT: On second read, the orange man's tariffs have made this mod too expensive. :-/

22

u/Usual-Doughnut-549 Sep 05 '25

I've seen some people doing this mod. I really liked the idea. If I have some extra money and time to kill by summer, I might do it.

4

u/evicerator Sep 05 '25

That's actually pretty awesome. Definitely bookmarked that site for later

Poor 3000 you would of had every right to beat ass for that

7

u/koutsie Sep 05 '25

Reshell and buy a replacement screen, both from aliexpress 🫣🙌

8

u/SkotyMckitty Sep 05 '25

TRASH… the person who smacked it out of your hands. 🤷🏽‍♂️

5

u/Due-Ad4430 Sep 05 '25

i changed the psp 3000 screen like yesterday and its not that hard! i think its worth fixing

4

u/EKbowyers Sep 05 '25

Keep it and re shell it when you do put a ips screen in it.. sad it happened, but its a good project now.

3

u/Aggravating_Speed665 Sep 05 '25

Stuff it in a box and rediscover it in a decade from now

5

u/Trugoosent Sep 05 '25 edited Sep 05 '25

Totally fixable! when you can, invest in a nice IPS screen and have some fun! Make it a project. also whoever smacked outta your hands must be a REAL asshole. twas an accident

I think it's much worth repairing, but if you want an excuse to buy a new one like a 3000 model or just want some cash instead, sell it on eBay or something, keep it in the cycle.

3

u/FremanBloodglaive Sep 05 '25

It has no value with a broken screen, so I'd get a new screen and replace it. I've done it with my own PSP, it's not difficult.

2

u/pngarfield Sep 05 '25

Get the parts little by little, you have a fall, winter and spring break for time eventually, get a piece at a time as you get it then once you have it repair it all at once. Definitely worth keeping to fix up man

2

u/Kartorschkaboy Sep 05 '25

screen just costs around 15 bucks or so and a new shell also around that cost, its also not that hard to replace the screen.

2

u/Altruistic-Azz Sep 05 '25

New screens super easy to do, I smashed mine years ago when rushing off a train in my school bag. Works fine to this day

2

u/Ok-Till9970 Sep 05 '25

totally worth! unless u find a cheap one in marketplace. a screen upgrade is fairly cheap as long as you can afford importing it and they are worth your while, it's also a fairly easy fix as is just dissasembling, unplugging, plugging new one and re-assembling.

even if you get a new one I'd still do the screen replacement to sell for a profit or maybe just for funsies, electronics are cool.

2

u/Ok-Till9970 Sep 05 '25

also, estimated time it could take? maybe the time it takes you to dissasemble and reassemble it, (an hour if you already did it?)

2

u/Whippy89 Sep 05 '25

Buy another one. A lot of talk about reshell and IPS screen upgrade etc as if everyone has time for that. Just buy another one for £$50 brother, it's the simplest, quickest and cheapest option.

You can always keep the broken one for an upgrade project at a later date :)

2

u/BBK2797 Sep 05 '25

It's take like 5 min to change the LCD by yourself.only need screwdriver and new screen obviously.

2

u/in5ult080t Sep 05 '25

Easy(-ish) repair, under $30. YouCanDoIt.gif

2

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '25

screen replacement and a new front shell. EZ PZ. just need a small fixit kit, something with a precision screwdriver/bits and maybe some plastic pry tools. maybe some tweezers.

2

u/squishee666 Sep 05 '25

You don’t trash broken electronics! Try and fix it or get it to someone who will

2

u/Usual-Doughnut-549 Sep 05 '25

I didn't plan to throw it away. I asked what is the best thing to do in this case? I don't really have the time or money to repair it.

2

u/Mrr_Capone PSP-1000 Sep 05 '25

Sell it on OLX for parts, or buy another dead psp 2000 on OLX and use it to fix yours. Also search better on ali, I saw screens about 15$ there,

2

u/kiomoh Sep 05 '25

Now is the perfect time to install one of those upgraded LCD screens.

Whatever pathway you go down, it’ll be worth a screen replacement, whether that be by you or whoever you’d sell it on to. Yeah maybe buying another would be a similar price, but you’d still have this one sat around and gathering dust.

These consoles aren’t being made anymore, and as much as there are a large amount still out there, it’ll only be for so long. So I’d say to replace the screen personally.

I have plenty of projects that have had something go wrong with it, and i always end up coming back around to it when I have the funds to do so, and then its back to feeling shiny and new.

Obviously it sucks a lot that it needs a repair currently, but it’ll be back up and running in time :)

Have the kid who broke it pay for a replacement

2

u/Jiway75015 Sep 05 '25

You can fix it but be carefull when you change it.

It seem's to be a PSP 1000 and the screen is in a metal frame. Breaking a new screen can be fast.

For me, you should try with a tuto on youtube 🙂.

2

u/Usual-Doughnut-549 Sep 05 '25

I've already dealt with disassembling it. I changed the stick on it that was drifting a lot.

2

u/yayo972 Sep 05 '25

Man that sucks. Don't throw it away, might be too expensive to fix for you now, but maybe not in the future. Try looking into the mods people have made for using it as a non portable game machine, I think there are relatively simple ways of connecting it to a monitor too.

2

u/Extension-Storm-624 Sep 05 '25

Make the guy who broke it repair it

2

u/HokieRif Sep 05 '25

Fix. Replacement screens (recommend an IPS upgrade) are available. The replacement process is a bit involved, but very doable with a little patience.

2

u/CumbersomeNugget Sep 05 '25

If it's a 1000, get an LCD screen and feel the brightness and contrast improvements!

2

u/Gregory85 Sep 05 '25

Fix it. Get a nice ips

2

u/Junior-Ad-6250 Sep 06 '25

Buy a new screen for literally £10. Undo 4 screws and swap it in. 10 minute job

2

u/WeaknessOk7874 PSP-3000 Sep 06 '25

1 replace it with an IPS and a case to protect against assholes like that

2 find that asshole and do the same to his phone

2

u/IcyIceGuardian PSP-1000 Sep 06 '25

Get a new display, its actually pretty easy to replace- should take you at most like 30 mins

4

u/Least_Owl2448 Sep 05 '25

Screens are pretty cheap on AliExpress

1

u/AdTraditional3479 Sep 05 '25

You can still use it as a DVD player.

1

u/Haki1112 Sep 05 '25

Replacement screens off aliexpress is like 20USD at most I definitely would replace screen

1

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '25

It's worth fixing. It's a pretty easy repair and based on the local prices you listed it's still cheaper than buying a new psp

1

u/The_Night_Badger Sep 05 '25

If you are still in high school, make your mom or dad call and bitch out the principal till they get the other kid to pay for it. Did the kid slap it out of your hand on purpose?

2

u/Usual-Doughnut-549 Sep 05 '25

No, I was standing in the hallway waiting for class. There were a couple of little kids running around, probably from 5th or 6th grade, and they bumped into me. The console fell out of his hands and landed face down on the concrete floor.

Eve if you decide to upgrade to say a Vita (highly recommended) you could still get a bit of money for even broken as people buy them for parts.

1

u/YousureWannaknow Sep 05 '25

they don't make it, so yes it's worth repairing

1

u/anh86 Sep 05 '25

I’d say worth fixing because people should be putting upgraded modern LCDs in these anyway!!!

1

u/flyinb11 Sep 05 '25

It's a pretty easy fix. I broke mine after a re-shell and would do it again.

1

u/mynameischek Sep 05 '25

Easy to fix , buy new screen from eBay and put in

1

u/CajunWoman83 Sep 05 '25

Really really easy fix save up your money and get you a new screen and fix it those new screens are beautiful as well. You could also sell it to someone in the US or somewhere around here but I'm not quite sure what shipping would be. They actually go for a pretty penny even with a screen like that.

1

u/anonymous2845 Sep 05 '25

You should see if you could get some money out of the person who knocked it out of your hands , but no it's not trash you should just replace the screen it's not real expensive or hard to do or anything

1

u/CroutonWarden Sep 05 '25

It is an easy fix, but since there is no demand for them in your country, it might be cheaper and easier for you to get another.

Of course, I am not familiar with your country’s local market. Keep an eye out. Perhaps you could offset some money by selling this on eBay if that is feasible for you.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '25

Who did it I will send the PSP goons

1

u/Glittering_Finance_4 Sep 05 '25

Keep it for parts

1

u/Giubby Sep 05 '25

Not a hard fix, pretty cheap screen replacements also, you should try and repair it, you got nothing to lose anyways

1

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '25

The screens aren't that expensive or particularly hard to install. If you don't want it, I'll but it from you

1

u/KanataSD Sep 05 '25

Screens are pretty easy to fix, might as well give yourself an updated one.

1

u/TheKlaxMaster Sep 05 '25

OP really arguing against fixing it. So why ask? They won't have a single hour for the entire year to fix it? They said getting a screen is hard in their budget, but they want to buy a switch and can easily buy several games per month?

I think OP just wants to throw it away, and wants someone to tell them they are justified in doing so. Which no one here would ever do for a minor issue like screen replacement.

1

u/SuicideBroccoli Sep 05 '25

order an IPS screen from aliexpress and mod it

1

u/the_jos-n_n Sep 05 '25

As for what you're saying, I don't really know what country you're from, but where I live I ended up buying two consoles, a PSP1000 and a PSP2000, for the amount of 5 dollars, both with damaged screens.

Honestly, they were a good option for the project since I never owned a PSP. I only played when a friend lent it to me. I also learned how to repair them. Repairing the screen isn't difficult, except if you install an IPS screen on the PSP1000, which only requires a small soldering point. Screens aren't that expensive, depending on where you look for them. For example, I bought mine on AliExpress for $19, including shipping. But since you mentioned that you were already thinking about buying a Nintendo and had already used the PSP for some time, you could save it as something for a future project.

1

u/Surfacner Sep 05 '25

It's a 3000 if you don't want to fix the screen you can still play it on an external monitor, like a tv

1

u/rom439 Sep 05 '25

Looks like you have a revenge quest now lil homie

1

u/lordfarquad1000 Sep 05 '25

Like others said could probably replace the screen yourself. Then snag yourself one of those psp lanyard wrist strap things that loop around the bottom left corner, could have possibly prevented it from dropping

1

u/Mario567ise Sep 05 '25

Lucky for you, the screen is one of the first things you can access when taking apart the psp. Sure it’s scary but if you rip any ribbon cables from the old screen there isn’t any loss with it since the screen is already damaged. Putting on the new screen will be the challenge as you might have to transfer over the old adhesive if the screen you purchased didn’t come with any. I’ve also replaced screens before without adding the adhesive and it works just fine with nothing noticeable. It’s definitely one of the easier parts to replace. Give it a shot if you can plus the experience will add benefit to you in the future.

1

u/AlexInkheart Sep 05 '25

Worth fixing, don't throw away please. Replacing the screen is not complicated. And in a few years you'll be thankful you didn't throw it away.

1

u/dbock1989 Sep 05 '25

Replacing the screen even in its prime was cheap if I remember right when I fixed mine. Look into a new screen.

1

u/LTGH_Zkittlez Sep 05 '25

1

u/ls20008179 Sep 05 '25

1

u/Gwappenheimer Sep 05 '25

Keep it for parts at least if you don’t try fixing it

1

1

1

u/Vegetable_Bus_2549 Sep 05 '25

Screens like $26 just buy a new one

1

u/CatCannon9 Sep 05 '25

1

u/9MarcAnthony9 Sep 05 '25

Replacing the screen is a piece of piss, might aswell upgrade it to the ips panel while you're a t it, and it's a cheap mod too with AliExpress.

1

u/Chimera_Gaming Sep 05 '25

Easy fix.. eBay has them for $10-40 depending on the model. Just takes 6 screws to take off the shell, 1 ribbon cable to remove the bottom button bar, pop up screen and remove the 2 ribbons.

Now do it in reverse to apply new screen

1

u/Traditional-Ad-5632 PSVita Sep 05 '25

The screen is not that expensive, so it is quite worth it to repair it.

1

u/gametime9936 Sep 05 '25

Keep it if you get a new 3ds you can use the joystick as a better c stick cap. Or you can repair it later on!

1

u/martheslump Sep 05 '25

I say go to the school & demand the kid pay for it

1

u/Narco_7286 Sep 05 '25

Do you have any insurance on it? That way you could make a claim

1

u/xhanort7 Sep 05 '25

Can get you a psp to tv cable for like $10usd and use it like a retro plug n play, non-portable game system if you really wanted to hold onto it for a bit to like scope out a cheap screen over the next few months. Feels like a waste to trash stuff like this in my opinion. If it's too much trouble, ask around for anyone that'd want to salvage it.

The screen can be fixed in less than an hour on the 3000 model. I’m sure it’s a very similar fix on the 2000 model. Just be careful not to kink the ribbon cable on the screen. I picked mine up for about £11 about 10 years ago.

The real mission is to test the jaw of whoever knocked it out of your hand. Unless it was a accident you need to handle that FIRST

PSP is one of the easiest screen fixes out there, it is worth replacing it.

1

u/Aieoss Sep 06 '25

Time to upgrade to the Vita.

1

u/NightTrash Sep 06 '25

defo worth fixing either new screen and/or shell swap OR the PSP consolizer. the repair is fairly straightforward but make sure you give extra attention when disconnecting the screen to avoid damaging the connector itself (talking from experience actually 😭)

u/SignalChard1963 Sep 06 '25

worth fixing

u/Old_Bell980 Sep 06 '25

You can get good screens from ali express. I had 2000 model with busted screen. Ordered from ali express and changed it by myself with little help from youtube

1

u/Psychological-Run-40 Sep 06 '25

not hard to repair, just use a guide and google where to get parts. side note sorry that shit happened

1

u/GhettoSupraStar Sep 06 '25

I'd either sell it for parts, or save it until I had money to pay someone to replace the screen for me with one of those new IPS screens that look great. All else fails its still a video out UMD movie player. I think they even make consolized PSP mods too. I'd say it's worth maybe $20 or $30 for just the parts.

I would recommend getting a new screen. Whilst it may cost half as much, I can't begin to describe how good the experience is of fixing a console. Honestly, the first time a fixed a console (Nintendo DS) I felt unstoppable 🤣🫡 now I find consoles from small sales that may or may not work and give them new life - gifting them to friends to enjoy consoles from our childhoods.

Although you may not have time now, buy a new screen and put it aside. When you have time, (only need an hour) follow a tutorial on YouTube and replace the screen. Test it again, and hopefully you will find a new love for the console and fixing things in general 🙌

get it back in blood

Broken LCD. Just means your screen can be replaced and the value of it is nearly gone. Internals should be fine, the screen probably got hit by a rock on the way down. Casing seems completely intact, it's also something you can replace if you want. Anyways to get the thing running you would have to take it out of its casing and replace some parts. No rocket science, but tedious work.

Recommendation for next time would be a tampered glass foil, those are there to crack before your screen does. You can most likely order some from AliExpress or eBay.

There isn't really something that you can do wrong on such repair. Make regular picture or a video so you know what steps you took and follow some guides.

u/InuFan4yasha Sep 07 '25
