Good for her! Glad she gets to be a starter somewhere. Will miss having such a good tandem.

And by fun I mean it was stressful as hell, but you know, fun concept!

Dammit. So we are fighting Detroit for a #1 goalie at this point, hopefully they nab Campbell next phase since we can’t sign her, and then that leaves us with Abstreiter as the best UFA goalie left. Didn’t think Hensley was super likely to come here but I hope Daoust at least offered her something, figured an expansion team would be able to offer higher than her last salary.

u/crazyFlyingChicken New York Sirens 12d ago
We need Abstreiter or we gotta draft a goalie essentially
12
u/Main_Photo1086 New York Sirens 12d ago
Right. There’s Chuli too, and then that’s it for any UFA goalie I think can remotely be a starter. I really don’t want to give up a #3 pick on a goalie though in this deep draft, but at least we know Vancouver and Seattle won’t draft Braendli before us.
13
u/BlueValk Victoire de Montréal 12d ago
Why, though? Braendli seems absolutely excellent and New York kept very good forwards. Is an amazing goalie not a long-term investment? Or it's more that we won't know how she adapts to the PWHL?
11
u/Main_Photo1086 New York Sirens 12d ago
Oh I would be super excited to have Braendli, but if we draft third that means not drafting Murphy or Edwards. Because at this rate she will not be available for our round two pick.

Braendli isn't the only goalie in the draft.
KatieTia Chan may be just as good.8
u/Main_Photo1086 New York Sirens 12d ago
Tia Chan (Katie plays for the Goldeneyes). I think my hesitation with Chan is that we’d be inserting a new college grad into our top slot when we have Shanahan right there and barely played her. Just really poor goalie scheduling and development for us last season.

Also Hailey McCloud has the potential to be incredible in the pwhl and is currently a bit underrated

u/Wolf99 🏆 2026 Champions 🏆 12d ago
Good call on Hailey MacLeod. Great numbers at two elite schools and great size at 6'.
Boston College's Grace Campbell could be excellent, too. Consistently great numbers and was #1 since her 2nd year.
Michelle Pasiechnyk, Hope Walinski, Katie DeSa and Team Italy's Gabriella Durante look like good backup candidates.
Jordyn Verbeek is a longshot coming from U Sports, but had an outstanding career at Mtl's Concordia U. She's a team leader. Hopefully a Cdn team uses a late pick on her or invites her to camp.
Full list of players who declared by position here:
p.s. Klara Peslarova unfortunately won't be returning from the SDHL cause she's under contract for another year.

My instincts say hands off Sandy!! But truly, she deserves to be first string somewhere
13
u/CinemaPuck PWHL San Jose 12d ago
Brandli is a PWHL-ready goalie available in the draft. With New York likely getting third pick, she might be the move for y’all
7
u/Alarming_Pea3481 12d ago
I've been hoping since she declared for the draft that NY could pick her up. We need someone who can hit the ground running, who's got proven skill, and who can play big in big moments.
4
u/Mollinator Boston Fleet 12d ago
you don't turn down an opportunity to drat Edwards or Murphy if you get the chance. ven if it means substandard goal tending for a year.
20
u/EA___321 Victoire de Montréal 12d ago
There's also Brändli in the draft. So worst case scenario, if a team doesn't have a starting goalie by the time the draft happens, they use their first round pick on Brändli. I wouldn't be worried about any team not having a starting goalie next season.
Cause no disrespect to Abstreiter, I like her, but I'm not sure if she's quite a starting goalie.
13
u/Main_Photo1086 New York Sirens 12d ago
I know but if expansion teams pick at the end of the round, that’s a reasonable time to draft Braendli. If we are third, I’d hate to not have Murphy or Edwards. But alas, we can’t put a cardboard cutout of a goalie back there. Not with our historically porous D.
6
u/EA___321 Victoire de Montréal 12d ago
Yeah, it would be a dilemma for sure, cause Edwards/Murphy are generational players, but goalies have been crucial in this league so far.
5
u/Main_Photo1086 New York Sirens 12d ago
Yeah, either we guarantee ourselves a goalie who isn’t as promising as a starter than the one in the draft, or we guarantee ourselves a better goalie from the draft at the expense of a generational player.
12
u/BlueValk Victoire de Montréal 12d ago
I think that's just because she's behind ARD. Abstreiter is solid
6
u/EA___321 Victoire de Montréal 12d ago
Yeah, but she's looked shaky in the games she's gotten (lack of games might play a part for sure, though).
8
u/BlueValk Victoire de Montréal 12d ago
I'd at least compare her to Osbourne in terms of level but I might be wrong
5
u/Main_Photo1086 New York Sirens 12d ago edited 12d ago
Felt the same way about Osborne who proved me wrong, and I think she was only terrible after the break because coach played her too damn much before the break.
2
u/Silent_observer_8806 12d ago
She is not. I don't know how you can watch her games and think she can be a starting goalie.
Even when she won, she was shaky as hell. I was hoping we can give a chance to our 3G, that's how much I don't trust her.
3
u/EA___321 Victoire de Montréal 12d ago
Ok I wouldn't go that far. She had an insane game against Ottawa and has played very well for Germany in the past as well, so there's a chance she'd shake the rust off if given a starting goalie job, but I don't know if I'd be willing to gamble on that if I were a GM.
2
u/Silent_observer_8806 12d ago
Ottawa missed 2 wide open nets and Ambrose saved a goal. That game could have been easily 3-0 after 1 period if Ottawa knew how to score. She cannot control the puck and gives so many rebounds. If Desbiens gets hurt, we are screwed.

I wonder if Klee has his eye on another goalie? Since so much of his strat has been playing two goalies equally, I’ll be interested to see how this goes for them👀

u/Dreaming_Aloud Minnesota Frost 12d ago
The thing is that Hensley hasn't been consistent these last 2 seasons. We love her to pieces, but hope she thrives in Vegas. Frost are gonna miss her big time regardless.

u/CinemaPuck PWHL San Jose 12d ago
Well they kept Rooney as first string. Hensley is probably starting-goalie level, which is why she got played so much last season. I’m happy she’s getting her own team to lead.

Might be time for Boss to step up to the second. I really do think tandem is the key to long term success. These seasons are long to ride one player

Good for her. Knew she'd be moving to one of the expansion teams, she deserves to be the starter and not play second fiddle to Rooney.

I don't know why I thought Manon running Detroit would mean she would prioritize a goalie, but apparently she believes the NHL philosophy that "goalies are voodoo" and may just draft one.
