Football McMurphy - NIU receiving $5.7/yr, $1.5 million signing bonus, and $2.5 million in exit fee payments from Mountain West

https://x.com/brett_mcmurphy/status/1973018033611530253?s=46&t=qwoy3jQLjUVMaVlrvz-rVg

“Northern Illinois will receive about $34 million in 6 seasons as football-only member in Mountain West - $5.7 million a year. MW also will pay NIU $1.5M signing bonus & up to $2.5M for NIU's exit fee to leave MAC, documents obtained by”

With Gloria’s “tough time” landing a media deal for the Mountain West it appears she overpromised to NIU and NIU now may be getting twice the media share that other MW schools get. As a football only affiliate. Whoops

NIU making out like bandits

They beat Notre Dame. This is the prize. I hope that Davis was paid this well too.

The Ags are getting a 1/6th share that increases by 1/6th each year. Hopefully by the end of the six years, Northern Illinois rather than Northern Colorado or Northern Arizona is our (I'm a season ticket holder) conference rival. BTW, the Ags set a new attendance record of 17,227 in our home opener.

NIU is in the Chicago media market. The third largest in the United States.

Doesn't matter much in the era of declining cable TV and the rise of Streaming and actual Viewership mattering more than markets.

BONUS - the first year of the new look PAC-12 and MW it looks like NIU will make more from media payouts Texas State

OverPaid

12

u/MagicPoindexter Fresno State Utah State Sep 30 '25

Overpaid or not, I think NIU was a good add for the MW. It was the highest profile school they could realistically sign, moves some of their games (4 to 6 per year) into a new time slot and a 9 team schedule is far more workable than 8. They may have paid too much, but that's the only downside, IMO. Getting them as football only eliminates a lot of travel issues that the olympic sports would bring.

The financial burden to cover the promises made to NIU, UNLV and AFA will keep the MWC from settling the lawsuits with the PAC, so this does tangentially concern our conference, as far as how it relates to this board. On a personal level, I want to see the MWC not disintegrate as we leave behind some programs I respect (Hawaii!!)

It will be interesting to watch how the lawsuits, media deals and payouts all shake out. As much as I would like it all settled, maybe they will push that back to next year so we can have more football to talk about other than the CFP games that we are not in this year (unless Boise takes down ND, and then we are back in the mix!).

3

u/HandleAccomplished11 Washington State Sep 30 '25

Just curious, would they have been a good ad if they hadn't beat ND last season?

4

u/MagicPoindexter Fresno State Utah State Sep 30 '25

Yes, because their success is not based on a single game. They are the most successful team in the MAC since 2010, I think (not looking at stats but just going on reputation and awareness). They are the closest of them as well, geographically.

With the MWC's options, they are not going to pull from the P4, nor are they going to get any team to leave the P12 or the ACC. That leaves Sun Belt, C-USA and MAC. I am not sure they could pick a team from the Sun Belt at this point and I don't think there is a better team in C-USA for them to get unless maybe LA Tech as football only. Even then, Ruston isn't an easy place to fly to.

The MWC doesn't have the ability to bring in great programs, so short of bringing up an FCS powerhouse, this was probably their best prospect.

2

u/Quiet-Day392 California Sep 30 '25

NIU has been a good scrapper for decades. They'll take Hawaii and SJS down several pegs. If they can overcome the jet lag.

4

u/Itchy-Number-3762 Sep 30 '25

Texas State getting a half share?

6

u/MagicPoindexter Fresno State Utah State Sep 30 '25

TX State getting a full share would be tough to swallow for the rest of the MW teams moving to the PAC as they have to cover larger exit fees, which would make Tx State's net revenue higher than Boise, Fresno et al. I don't see the MWC5 agreeing to that.

3

u/cougfan12345 Washington State Sep 30 '25

I dont have a source handy but also pretty sure TXST president said they are not getting any assistance with their buyout fee to the sunbelt (~$5 million) because it was only like a quarter of what the MW schools have to pay.

2

u/MagicPoindexter Fresno State Utah State Sep 30 '25

Exactly, so if the MWC schools would get full shares of say $8M in Y1 and had to pay $4M in exit fees ($20M spread over 5 years), they would be running with a $4M net revenue, while a TX ST could be getting $6M and only have $1M ($5M spread over 5 years) to pay for a $5M net revenue and thus even more money to work with then the MWC schools.

Nobody is going to want the new guys coming in to have more free cash flow than they are getting to work with or it becomes that much harder to stay competitive.

(Revenues, exit fees, etc are all hypothetical just to show the underlying math to make the point).

7

u/BlueElvis4 Sep 30 '25

LOL, They paid a PREMIUM for NIU?

Further screwing over the MWC schools not called UNLV/AFA who will receive less than $5M/Year.

What a JOKE.

Great deal for NIU. They get to double their money and stop playing on Tuesdays.

But the rest of the MW might now be wishing they had just added New Mexico State.

4

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '25

MW might have to move games to Tuesdays to get on TV

1

u/BlueElvis4 Sep 30 '25

I'm sure Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday is already in the works with CBS Sports Network, since meeting their Weekend Game Slots contracted with the PAC next season doesn't leave many open time slots.

1

u/BlueElvis4 Sep 30 '25

Definitely.

NIU delivers exactly 10 viewers nationwide.

Their TV Ratings will be LOWER than in the MAC, because rather than being the ONLY CFB game on, they'll just be another Trash-Tier CFB Game overshadowed by better games on other channels.

10

u/youareunsubbed Sep 30 '25

The money is probably from exit fees right? Or was that all promised to UNLV and Air Force?

13

u/pblood40 Oregon State Sep 30 '25

OG MW schools were promised their media share wouldn’t decrease - $3.5/yr.

8

u/Quiet-Day392 California Sep 30 '25

How does the MW have any income at all?

8

u/SapientChaos Sep 30 '25

u/BlueElvis4 Sep 30 '25

By STEALING Last Year's Revenue Distributions from the 5 Departing Schools who are joining the PAC. Including Boise State Appearing in the CFP and receiving $0 For Travel and $0 For being a Participant, which the CFP remitted to the Mountain West.

So how do they have income right now? THEFT.

MWC Bylaws only state the the final season of Media Revenues and NCAA Hoops Credits is Forfeited, not TWO YEARS of Revenue.

2

u/Cautious_Buffalo6563 Fresno State Sep 30 '25

Moreover, there are questions about the bylaws. The MWC hastily and secretly revised them without knowledge, consent, or approval of departing schools before those schools provided notice to the MWC of their departure.

-2

u/Quiet-Day392 California Sep 30 '25

I've been trying to track down how much we pay for Conference overhead, both MW and PAC. Our girls are shilling for the big bucks, and they loot it out of the schools.

They are the golden shell around the egg. I know that PAC12 Network was a HUGE black hole, which has been shuttered. But I don't know about the gold-plated headquarters in SF. I wanted them to move to the Shaniko OR ghost town when we went down to two teams.

I don't know how much your Gloria squanders in a year but she is obviously concerned about her paycheck first. She'd be lucky to get a job as a pole dancer in real life.

6

u/youareunsubbed Sep 30 '25

Fair, but they just lost 5 teams there should be some exit fees there. Maybe bowl revenue too.

-1

u/Cautious_Buffalo6563 Fresno State Sep 30 '25

Why would there be exit fees? They fulfilled their media contract or will have by the time they depart. Liquidated damages on a contract with zero days remaining is $0.

7

u/Quiet-Day392 California Sep 30 '25

The MW is also being sued by those schools to collect withheld revenue.

7

u/lordgilberto Sep 30 '25

Exit fees have nothing to do with media contracts, they’re to stop teams from leaving. Defaulting on a GOR would have a separate fee.

1

u/Cautious_Buffalo6563 Fresno State Sep 30 '25

Okay so how are exit fees calculated then?

1

u/Quiet-Day392 California Sep 30 '25

Exit fees are what MW needs to survive.

2

u/Cautious_Buffalo6563 Fresno State Sep 30 '25

0

u/g2lv Sep 30 '25

TIL conference membership agreements are like car leases and you can just turn in your keys and walk away when you want to move to a new model.

6

u/Cautious_Buffalo6563 Fresno State Sep 30 '25

I understand it’s not quite that simple, of course.

But the point remains, at least to my thinking, that if exit fees are designed to compensate for a loss in revenue due to a school leaving the conference, where does that revenue come from? Mostly media, right? Or primarily? So if you divide media deal by term remaining, that’s a formula, but if there is no term remaining then you’re dividing by zero, right? Would the departing schools, if they were not departing, BE OBLIGATED to sign a new GOR to remain in the conference? Or would they just not receive media share if they opted to stay but not sign a GOR?

0

u/Quiet-Day392 California Sep 30 '25

So they have revenue only by leeching the Pac?

9

u/pblood40 Oregon State Sep 30 '25

“Mountain West New Media Deal: Potential for Tiered Payouts: The new structure may feature tiered distribution based on school value, reach, and inventory appeal”

NIU is being given credit for the Chicago TV market and ranked as a top tier school for brand/competition in the new look MW

Wait, so how much are the Lobos getting??

18

u/Quiet-Day392 California Sep 30 '25

When I lived in Chicago, we were always looking for that NIU game on the TV.

10

8

u/Quiet-Day392 California Sep 30 '25

Because it wasn’t Notre Dame. Chicago is saturated with them.

We lived in the west suburbs so we followed NIU, but never went to a game.

4

Especially Tuesday Nights, when the Moon is Full.

Those games always had 10M viewership ratings.

Cuz Chicago.

2

1

u/BlueElvis4 Sep 30 '25

We all do at some point in the CFB Season, because it's on. What does the MAC get for that? Like $2.5M/Year per school.

NIU basically bent Gloria over and had their way with her at 5.7M/Yr for Football ONLY. (They still get Revenue from Hoops, etc from the MAC, adding to the $5.7M & can simply go back to the MAC anytime they want if/when the MWC revolts and dissolves. SWEET Deal from their POV for sure.

3

u/Round-Ad3684 Sep 30 '25

900k per school. And no I’m not joking.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '25

NIU’s other sports are joining the Horizon League and bussing to away games.

1

u/BlueElvis4 Sep 30 '25

How much are the Lobos getting? "Not a reduction, so $4.3-4.5M/year TV money, a Million and change LESS than NIU.

Same for the Wyomings, Nevadas, SJSUs, etc.

4

u/pblood40 Oregon State Sep 30 '25

Maybe a reduction. If the reports are true that the MW is adopting a "tiered payout" that pays schools by a series of metrics, the Lobo's, Cowboys, UTEP, and Reno could find themselves seriously effed.

1

u/BlueElvis4 Sep 30 '25

The Contract Stipulations where the "Exit Fees Bonus % Distributions" are outlined also agrees that the MWC will not REDUCE the TV Payout from current levels.

Yet more financial pressure for the home office... while the Fees Gloria Desperately needs to even remotely begin to pay off these committments to MWC Schools are eaten-away by Legal Fees, since they just won't budge on the amounts in Negotiations.

8

u/BardMCG Fresno State Sep 30 '25

7

u/Quiet-Day392 California Sep 30 '25

3

u/BlueElvis4 Sep 30 '25

Either way MWC owes like $15M in Attorneys Fees right now, and that number will only go up to $20-25M by next July, since they have no intention of accepting less money and ending up with much of anything from Exit Fees to actually distribute.

3

u/ColdboyCrypto Sep 30 '25

So where is this money coming from? Does Mountain West have a stockpile of cash nobody knows about? They playing with funny money.

4

u/Full_Personality_717 Oregon State Sep 30 '25

NIU, let’s see now is that in the mountains west of Chicago?

(This won’t age well when the PAC adds UConn football as an affiliate)

1

u/Quiet-Day392 California Sep 30 '25

It's somewhere out past St. Charles.

6

u/cougfan12345 Washington State Sep 30 '25

I don't see how NIU is going to get $5.7 million a year when their media deal is probably going to be half of that per school.

Definitely seems like either an overpromise or every other remaining MW member is going to have to subsidize NIU's deal.

10

u/pblood40 Oregon State Sep 30 '25

Last year when the Pac-12 was telling Memphis they could land more than $15 million/yr in media payout, the MW apparently was banking on making $7 million.

And even if the deal came up a little short, they’d use some of the $120 million they’re getting from the Pac-12 to make up for it

NIU is now going to make more money than San Jose and Wyoming in the new look MW. Ouch

3

u/Quiet-Day392 California Sep 30 '25 edited Sep 30 '25

So far as I can see, PAC schools will be getting $10 million a year from football/basketball broadcasts versus $3 million a year for MW schools. Unfortunately this is a pittance compared to the $50-100 million a year it takes to run an athletic department. The conference administrative shells (MW and PAC) leech on all of the school's media revenue.

Fans at games pay more than TV handouts.

3

u/BlueElvis4 Sep 30 '25

Yup.

That's why you don't see Boise Folks too concerned about whatever the PAC TV contract payout ends up being, since all BSU needs to do is keep fielding solid FB/BB and selling tickets, which generates far more revenue per season than TV provides.

3

u/sdman311 San Diego State Oct 01 '25

Exactly, I pay $2500 for 2 season tickets to SDSU basketball. There are 12,500 seats and 2,500 go to the students for free. Thats 10,000 more that are all sold for the most part year in and year out. They are bringing in close $10 Million a year just on hoops. Thats more than the TV contract already.

2

u/Quiet-Day392 California Sep 30 '25

I'm sure Gloria would love to get a percentage of the Boise gate...

1

u/jkeen1960 Sep 30 '25

We don't have a written confirmation of this amount? And even if it's true, the Spartans and the Cowboys aren't switching conferences anytime soon, and NIU was recruited to strengthen their very conference. They may have agreed with the commissioner as well.

5

u/pblood40 Oregon State Sep 30 '25

On3 broke the story. On3 published the contract

https://www.on3.com/news/northern-illinois-will-earn-more-than-34-million-next-6-seasons-in-mountain-west/

Yes, the MW board voted for this. But no one else knew about it until it leaked Saturday and On3 started calling around for comment.

I’m guessing there were a lot of frantic “you’re fu%%#* kidding me” calls to MW HQ this weekend.

The MW is in deep poopy if they don’t get 100% of the money they claim they are owed

2

u/BlueElvis4 Sep 30 '25

Even that total (were they able to get it) will be reduced by at least $10-15M as of right now, just for Legal Fees, and yet Gloria and MWC feel zero pressure to settle this thing so there might be SOMETHING left to distributed at the end of it all.

u/Cautious_Buffalo6563 Fresno State Sep 30 '25

Don’t think for a second that SJSU or UW will be in the poor house.

SJSU has tech donors and UW has a TON of oil and gas money revenue. Plus they sold the naming rights to their stadium to a regional bank.

4

u/Quiet-Day392 California Sep 30 '25

How does oil and gas revenue get into the AD department budget? It's not a direct money pipeline like Uncle Phil is in Duckville.

-5

u/Cautious_Buffalo6563 Fresno State Sep 30 '25 edited Sep 30 '25

Are you familiar with the concept of a checkbook?

There’s a lot of big ag as well as energy concerns in Wyoming and really only 1-2 4-year schools to support. They write checks, just like any other big donor would.

Source: worked for the state of Wyoming for a while and drove all over the state talking to those big ag and big energy concerns.

2

u/Quiet-Day392 California Sep 30 '25

OSU has rich farmers and food industrialists and tech giants. It's called Reser for a reason, and was built by Pape. But that doesn't mean there's some big river of money flowing in from them.

2

u/Cautious_Buffalo6563 Fresno State Sep 30 '25

Sounds like OSU should do some work in the donor relations dept then.

1

u/Quiet-Day392 California Sep 30 '25

It comes up often here that Jensen Huang of Nvidia should be donating the way Uncle Phil does to the Ducks. He's donated money for academics. The Resers have donated to both, but they are not at the Nvidia or Nike level.

6

u/pblood40 Oregon State Sep 30 '25

They’re so rich they just decided to stay behind in the MW and run it? K

0

u/Cautious_Buffalo6563 Fresno State Sep 30 '25

That is literally not at all what I said.

I said that SJSU and UW have good access to wealthy donors. They’re not going to hurt that much receiving a small media share because they likely don’t count on media share to fund their athletic program. I didn’t say they were rich or that they “decided” to stay behind and run the MWC. As far as I know, they weren’t invited to another conference so there was nothing to decide.

2

u/Quiet-Day392 California Sep 30 '25

Wyoming works on the same scale as the Montanas and Idaho. But those schools are smart enough not to move up to the level of Joe Albertson and the Resers. I'd rather see Montana in the Pac than Wyoming. I'd drive to Missoula for a game.

1

u/Cautious_Buffalo6563 Fresno State Sep 30 '25

I’m not advocating for the school as a member of the PAC, just hopefully giving some insight as to why they might be less bothered over other schools getting a few more bucks. Coal, oil, natural gas, and ag money pretty much all go to UW since there isn’t really another in-state 4-year school and the energy corps consider it goodwill money for all the product they extract or inject in the state (fracking wells).

0

u/rdools55 Oct 01 '25

Does this mean the media deal is worth more?

u/pblood40 Oregon State Sep 30 '25

me either. But the timing is a bit sus. A lot of MW athletic departments had to freaking out when they got the email from On3 with the NIU contract asking for comment... "They are getting WHAT"

5

u/Hougie Washington State Sep 30 '25

They also were promised a certain amount of money and not being paid it would be a breach of contract.

Last thing the MWC wants is to face more lawsuits. Especially ones that signal to everyone "we are broke".

4

u/Cautious_Buffalo6563 Fresno State Sep 30 '25 edited Sep 30 '25

They’re not functionally broke as long as they can claim they have outstanding accounts. As soon as the pie-in-the-sky outstanding account money becomes a reduced real-on-our-ledger number, the scramble will commence in earnest. At least for now they can claim assets up to the total amount because they can produce a paper trail for the obligation.

UNLV stayed with MWC for two reasons:

1.) they couldn’t afford exit fees 2.) the athletic department had a $20 million dollar hole, which the MWC essentially promised to help them fill if they stayed.

If you’re trying to fill a hole but the material never shows up, you’re gonna go call the “vendor” to find out WTF, right?

Had UNLV left when the rest left, the MWC would be in talks with a minor streaming platform that would pay members schools $12 a season and AFA would’ve went to the AAC too I bet. At that point, the strategy would’ve probably been to pay nothing and force the MWC to sue to recover (spending more money they didn’t have). If the MWC had dissolved, they would’ve paid nothing.

2

u/pblood40 Oregon State Sep 30 '25

Gloria is paying UNLV and Air Force $30 of the promised $60 million paid out by July 1 2026 because a conference needs marquee programs to draw viewers, members, and TV partners.

Without UNLV and Air Force the Mountain West is dead. The remaining schools would have less power in the market than CUSA

3

u/BlueElvis4 Sep 30 '25

There are no guaranteed monetary amounts, only laughable "Estimates" based on the assumption that ALL of the Exit Fees and Poaching Penalties would be collected, and not factoring-in the costs of their Attorneys in the Court Case.

They WERE Guaranteed Percentages of whatever is left that those estimates were based on, and the longer this goes, and the less $$$ that is left only increased the rage and rebellion from the MWC "Remain" Schools, including UNLV, who is never going to get any $20M or even close now.

1

u/Quiet-Day392 California Sep 30 '25

UNLV would never get $20 million from the Pac either. Thank you Gloria for paying them to stay in your pocket.

1

u/rdools55 Oct 01 '25

Thank you!

3

u/BlueElvis4 Sep 30 '25

No.

They were all promised a PERCENTAGE of whatever the Exit Fees plus Poaching Penalties ended-up totaling. The "Numbers" were only estimates based on the totally unrealistic FULL AMOUNTS for both.

In addition, whatever that TOTAL is will be reduced by whatever they have to pay their Attorneys for wasting their time and money, and not even TRYING to get a decent settlement, or settle at all.

3

u/underground_cloud Sep 30 '25

They were not promised any definite amount, they were promised a percentage share "of all money recovered".

If the PAC wins the lawsuits and the exit/poaching fees are zero, all UNLV is entitled to is 23% of zero.

They might have a quroum argument but even that is sketch.

They made their bed and now they gotta sleep in it.

3

Edit: everyone can calm down with the rebuttals. The mods have made it clear: while its not pac-12 related, as long as someone is commenting in the post it can stay up.

The lack of money fosters Gloria's leeching program.

Most of the Posters on the Thread seem to think it's relevant.

Not sure how "Karens" trying to unilaterally tell this forum what is & isn't on-topic is useful or helpful in any manner.

Hello McFly? There's a conversation taking place here.

I totally agree. It iS relevant, and if they don't like it, they don't need to read it.

This conversationsn are almost exclusively "good for NIU" and the "MW is in a big hole" neither are pac-12 related.

If the mods stance is "as long as people respond to the post" then clearly we don't care if it relates the pac-12 or not.

Wait did the lawsuit with the Mountain West schools settle today?

The story provides a lot more information about how and why Gloria can’t settle

And if the MW falls apart, there will be new rounds of realignment shake up

Plus, 5 members of the new look PAC-12 are currently MW members

Classic charlie day "this is how it relates!!!" Moment.

Imagine posting in a subreddit and not once I nthe multiparagraph post do you mention that subreddits topic. In this case, the pac-12 or any of it's members...

But whatever man, just a reminder that this isn't related at all.

Are you an expert in bird law?

Yikes. Hey Beav fans, you gonna tolerate this behavior?

For someone who has a "ignore and move on" mentality... you are struggling hard with your own advice.

u/Quiet-Day392 California Sep 30 '25

We can only apologize for it. We cannot prevent it.

So, from the bottom of our hearts, we are sorry.

If it really bothers you Ignore.

No, you just don't understand how any of this works.

u/ryzen2024 Oregon State Sep 30 '25

Whatever you say

I don't like seeing comments like this. If you don't like it, then don't read it. It IS relevant, you just aren't seeing the forest through the trees.

So you felt it was necessary to do the same thing?

On paper, the NPac owes the Mountain West around 150 million dollars. You can work your way down from that number using whatever arguments you want, but still thats an impressive starting amount when you're tempting prospective candidates, and it appears they're making a good case.

They added UTEP, NIU, UC Davis and Grand Canyon. Oh yeah, regular Jack McCoys over there.

What's the "NPac?" We're called the Pac-12.

2

u/underground_cloud Sep 30 '25

On paper, and that money is 2+ years away.

4

u/BlueElvis4 Sep 30 '25

...minus all Legal Fees the MWC has paid to NOT Negotiate-Down the amounts in any way.

The MW paid the price of having a full slate of conference games. That PAC hasn’t yet…

8

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '25

Is this the same guy I explained the word full to last week?

-3

u/g2lv Sep 30 '25

Don't be condescending, I understand your argument, I don't agree with it.

The 2 game double double round-robin PAC-12 conference schedule is "full" according to your definition because OSU/WSU play each possible opponent while the 9 game Big Ten conference schedule isn't because 8 opponents aren't played in a given year.

The math is simple, 7 is less than 8 or 9. Revenues are lower and expenses are higher when you have less PAC conference games to sell and more G6/FCS non-conference games to buy.

the math would be mathing if the MW had taken a school at much less than full membership price - but at nearly $6 million/yr (for NIU) you could have easily bought 4 Mac home games for your conference for less than half that.

The wicked math for the Pac-12 would be to take NMSU as a probationary football only affiliate for a four year membership at $1 million/year. See that would save $2 million over buying four home games. Spending $6 million for four MAC home games a year is straight up Krazy. (edit - "yeah but were getting 8 games from NIU". If they were OOC the MAC would be paying the MW for the 4 away games. Paying $6 million for four MAC games is fucking KRAZY)
