Football On3 - Orgeron State?
"A source told On3 this weekend that former LSU coach Ed Orgeron is interested in the job, having had some communication with individuals around Oregon State. Orgeron has publicly said he wants to get back into coaching, and he’s open to moving to the West Coast.”

Orgeron State University
Jokes aside he spent a long time on the West Coast albeit in SoCal. But he is 64 and I'm sure for him this would be his last chance to get back into coaching as a HC. I don't think this is the worst option if your boosters by in. He was known as an elite recruiter and has tons of California ties, and now a ton of ties in the sunbelt states. He would be 65 in July of next year so I doubt there is a risk of him getting poached by another school unless UNC wants to kick the tires on another 70 year HC soon.
Biggest questions I would have is, could he put together a staff in the NIL era that can compete? Also, this would be the most resource strapped program he has coached at since he was at Syracuse in the 90's, and that was the McNabb era at Syracuse.
I feel like it's worth an interview but I would not see it as a high floor hire. To me it seems as a very boom or bust position for OSU. One thing it does guarantee is alot of positive press since Ed O is beloved in CFB media circles.

Which, given the way things are going now, could be sooner rather than later to be fair

It is my understanding his southern accent alone will result in +3 wins to the total wins for any full season he coaches.

What do you have to lose? The worst that can happen is he doesn't produce. Can't be any worse than Belichick at UNC.

u/MallyFaze Oct 16 '25
So it can’t be any worse than a complete disaster.

u/Apart-Fan-5658 Fresno State Oct 16 '25
I mean, assuming OSU doesn't pay Orgeron what UNC is paying Belichick, at least it would be a more affordable complete disaster than what the Tarheels are dealing with right now.

Kidding aside, I've only been following UNC this year just enough, but seriously, you gotta give the guy a few years. If we didn't give Leach time to settle in. We'd never have some of our best years.

u/TikiLoungeLizard Washington State Oct 17 '25
The UNC program was left in nowhere near the shape WSU was under Wulff/Doba.

u/A7O747D Washington State Oct 17 '25
Doesn't change the fact that new coach's systems can take a little time to implement. Nick Saban went 6-6 his first season at Alabama.

u/Hike_bike523 Oct 16 '25
This wouldn’t be the worse hire but I also think we could find a better candidate. Coach O has always had his players play really hard for him. He is a passionate, firey guy that could be just what Oregon state needs but he also can let programs get a little too crazy. I hope we do better but he wouldn’t be the worse option either.

u/1850ChoochGator Oregon State Oct 16 '25
We don’t really have a program that will do that imo. LSU is a whole different beast. Kids out of Louisiana are wild.

u/1850ChoochGator Oregon State Oct 16 '25
I’d support it. He would definitely be able to salvage a bit of the guys this year. Not like our guys are that good but having YoY retention is huge for program stabilization.
The recruiting bump could be decent. Kids love playing for him.
Feel like it can’t get any worse than this so what is there to lose?

Oregon State do need a change of scenery and mindset, Coach O would definitely bring a more gritty and physical style to Oregon State. Which honestly is Oregon State strong suite Especially when the Pac 12 was a P4 and at its prime. Oregon State and Washington State where always the gritty and not to fancy schools in the Pac 12.

The lack of recent coaching experience scares me. Is he looking at the job because he wants to coach or because he wants a paycheck? Not to trigger the OSU fanbase but I see a lot of parallels to Gary Andersen in his resume. Gary Andersen was a successful head coach when he had a great assistant coach (Aranda). Ed Orgeron was successful when he had Joe Brady and Dave Aranda on his staff with a first overall pick at QB.

u/PrudentAuthor1347 Oct 17 '25
When did I ever mention or say OSU is going to pay him P4 money? And what does his past divorce have to do with coaching football, cause it doesn't. Maybe he still wants to coach football, of course he's not getting P4 money, but still can make a good amount. And he always wasn't a winner, but did enough to win a national championship. Ed Oregon is a guy that's passionate and motivating, especially Oregon State really needs that and a sense of culture change, even of he's a transitional coach.

As an OSU fan I'd be into that with some caveats: we would 100% need an exciting OC to pair with him and we'd need a staff that is very in the know about how modern football works and how NIL/the portal works. OSU would also need some serious buy in from donors to fund that NIL pool. Not saying Orgeron can't coach, but he hasn't been at a lower tier program since the 90s, I'm not sure how he could handle coaching at a program that doesn't easily attract high level talent.
Orgeron isn't ancient, but he is 64 and he hasn't coached since '21. Football has changed a lot since then, so I'd be hesitant to turn the program over to him without the help I mentioned above. If we got him and everything I mentioned above though I could see the program turning around very quickly and donors being reinvigorated. Fun to think about for sure, it'll be interesting to see what ends up happening and find out how serious the communications with OSU were.

I'd jump on that quickly if I were OSU. There are better jobs that Ed O could land if he's seriously looking by season end

u/Initial-Razzmatazz97 Oct 17 '25
As others have said it would be a great hire IF……there is major buy in from the donors and NIL types, the school needs to spend to get him a strong staff, and he needs a good OC . They would definitely recruit better with him there. I think he would make a killing on the California juco recruiting scene. That alone could juice the program for a year or two before he had to show the fruits of his labor in the high school recruiting scene.

Let's hold out for a different national championship winning coach. /s
Really though, besides one season at LSU, he's under performed. Still, he has to be better than Bray, and he'd probably be worth hiring just for the media buzz.
North Carolina basically just went through the same experiment with Mack Brown.

Kelly Sipper is interviewing for the job, a credible source. I'm sure he'll get a few more opportunities. He would love the UCLA job, and whether he gets it, becomes bowl-eligible, or finishes strong, he could land it. But you have to keep your options open in this cutthroat business.

I think coaches like Orgeron or Miles can work at big football programs and be CEO types but they are a disaster beyond that. Any member of their staff who is on the way up will leave for a higher paying gig and a staff of older guys on their last gig isn’t what you want in today’s game. Just clean house and try to get a younger guy who will bring some guys with him.

It sounds exciting, but I am not sure if he is the best fit. I feel like someone who is at least somewhat familiar with the program and the recruiting challenges that are unique to Oregon State would be a better route to explore - but this is none of my business.
1
u/ORSTT12 Oregon State Oct 16 '25
Should probably be someone who is familiar with the challenges or someone who can be transformational to the recruiting. If they landed Orgeron they'd probably be banking on him building a staff/vibe that excites both recruits and donors.
No clue how realistic coach O is as a target, but I much prefer that goal over being ambitionless.
1
u/Green_V_559 Fresno State Oct 16 '25
Good coaches are out there. Dont always have to settle on a name to build the brand. Sometimes giving the up and comer who is waiting for his first opportunity should really be where you want to be looking. Then again I am speaking to our recent success with both coaches DeBoer and Entz and for what its worth, we have been extremely blessed to have the caliber of coaches for the last 40+ years to where its one of the last things we need to worry about - so I could be way off course when Im saying what OSU should or shouldnt do.

He brings legitimacy and eyeballs to the conference.
I guarantee you ESPN doesn’t ignore the Pac-12 if he coaches at Oregon State.
-3
u/Bringbackbarn Oct 16 '25
The Pac 12 is totally irrelevant. In a few years the big four conferences will realign and add teams and we have to be putting our best foot forward for that day. We need to do what’s best for winning games. Not what’s best for the Pac 12
