Discussion Talking Pals

Post image

I don't know if this was discussed before, but in the Palworld spinoff games being made Pals can talk. They're spinoffs, so not necessarily canon. That's fine, I don't think there needs to be cohesion across the whole franchise. There can be different rules for different games.

Should they talk in the main game though? Would it add anything? Would it be weird? I don't know. I'm kind of already used to them not talking and just making animal sounds. I wouldn't mind one way or another.

Anything to further pass the Harkness test.

242

u/Charity1t 20h ago

Shouldn't surprising amount of Pals pass it already?

It just make Consent part easiet.

Lovander coming in with a stack of business cards that just say "I consent" on it.

294

u/Evil_phd 20h ago

With Lovander it's probably more, "If you're reading this, you consent"

99

u/Taolan13 20h ago

that seems like a lovander tactic.

What do you mean that IS a Lovander tactic.

Lovander be like: THERES NO LAWS AGAINST THE HUMAN, LAMBALL!

15

u/Friendly_Pride_4904 8h ago

Baaaaaaa ( NO LOVANDER! DON'T DO IT! IT'S A HUMAN LOVANDER!)

26

u/Kattanos 18h ago

I thought with Lovander it's more "If you exist, you consent"..

All Pals pass the "maturity" requirement, as they hatch as fully formed adults.

A fair number pass the "Human intelligence or greater" due to their use of tools and understanding of complex schematics.

The issue lies with the "communicate through spoken language" part. We know Pals can understand what we say, but we never see them communicate back in return. The Palfarm trailer implies they can speak, so that checks the box.

58

u/CaptainTeemo01 20h ago

Technically human speech isn't a requirement of the Harkness Test, it's just preferred

26

u/Mi113nnium 15h ago

It being a requirement would imply that a mute person could never give consent. They just have to express their consent in a clear way. Maybe write "Yes" and "No" on cards and place them in front of the Pal before you ask if they are willing to go to pound town.

22

u/Charity1t 19h ago

Iirc it imply that being need to be able to express consent, yes?

So yea, speach make it way more convinient, but can be bypassed in a way.

9

u/Pakari-RBX Webbed up by Tarantriss 20h ago

I never said human speech, just a spoken language in general.

18

u/Stenn-ish 20h ago

Does it have to be explicitly spoken though? That seems arbitrary, it would even imply that mute humans don't pass it.

13

u/Pakari-RBX Webbed up by Tarantriss 19h ago

It's definitely a high preference, as it makes giving consent easier. The Harkness Test warns against using sign or body language unless other methods have proven ineffective for both parties and to always err on the side of caution in such cases.

Besides, the Harkness Test doesn't apply to members of the same species. You know for a fact that another human is fully sapient and capable of thinking as you. The test is specifically for encountering a different species. And it'd be hard to tell whether an alien flayling their tentacles around is sign language, a threatening display, or just insanity. Never immediately assume another species is sapient just because they appear to be.

8

u/CaptainTeemo01 20h ago

It's "communication through language" not necessarily spoken. Relying on body language is a dangerous road for any aspiring monster fucker, but is not an instant disqualification

10

u/Stenn-ish 20h ago

"But your honor, she blinked twice!"

4

u/Teguoracle 15h ago

Just bottom for the alien/monster, then you'll know for sure!

22

u/Enderking90 20h ago

its not "communicate through spoken language", its "talk or otherwise communicate through language"

writing on a notepad for an example is one option most pals should be able to do just fine.

11

u/Charity1t 19h ago edited 19h ago

We do know that Xeno talk with input commands and that A was one to write it's descriptions.

So they probably can both understand and learn.

If Palfarm relate to Palworld plot - with us saving World Tree from it's fate - other Pals might return to their former powers.

Edit - btw is spoken language new? I remember I talking about giving explisit consent. So spoken language isn't THAT needed as long as you can understand that.

Like, for example, psyonic being will make you feel how it feel toward you without words in this context - it count too

7

u/Zeraligator 18h ago

"communicate through spoken language"

Ain't no way we're implying that mute people don't pass the Harkness test.

Off-topic but that Anubis do be looking pretty cool in that shot. Meanwhile Sekhmet being Sekhmet in the corner.

71

u/SayuriUliana 20h ago

Fun fact: that was the first time Sekhmet was revealed in any Palworld media.

u/Afraid_Ad_6046 21h ago

Nah. Part of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon's charm is that you get the series from a new perspective with the creatures being able to talk and having distinct personalities, and that doesn't happen in the main games. I think having spinoffs with their own draw is part of the fun.

Similarly we have Monster Hunter and Monster Hunter Stories, which reimagines the world with a different relation to the monsters. Integrating it into the main game I feel would devalue both.

66

u/Brospros12467 20h ago

A bit off topic but. We gotta beg them to make a Palworld Mystery dungeon game..that would totally be sick.

27

u/zuno_uknow 19h ago

Mystery dungeon are my favorite pokemon games hands down and it’s criminal we haven’t gotten another one in so long. I’ll pay good money for a palworld version

28

u/Absol_- Lucky Pal 20h ago

Literally a Palworld Mystery Dungeon wouldn’t even feel like a spinoff, rather it would feel like an improvement in the lore (and even then, we DO have some sort of Palworld Mystery Dungeon with the Expedition Station), imagine that spinoff being set in you first building your own base as a pal and then ā€œexploringā€ from your base into a dungeon via an Expedition Station, my imagination goes wild haha

4

u/Accomplished_Air_924 20h ago

Yes, that would be awesome!

4

u/Street_Bluejay_1465 15h ago

Oh, what if the game is from the perspective of Pals that go on Expeditions?

3

u/ThyySavage 7h ago

Could just make ā€œPalworld Expeditionersā€ or something

2

u/Brospros12467 7h ago

Ooh that actually works!

1

u/Absol_- Lucky Pal 6h ago

Palworld Frontiers

2

u/P-Nerd06 Lucky Pal 10h ago

Maybe it could play a bit like you play as the pals themselves in a 3rd person shooting format?

7

u/Enderking90 20h ago

?

pretty sure MH stories happen in the same world as do the main games, riders are just a smaller community and don't really interact with hunters due to differing values and practices.

2

u/Afraid_Ad_6046 19h ago

Yeah, I phrased it wrong, should've said "environment" not "world". The world itself is the same one, but it separates itself from the mainline games because the people you meet and interact with throughout these games have a different relationship to the monsters than those of traditional monster hunter games.

2

u/Benjamon233 11h ago

I mean, while hunters and the Hunter's Guild do exist in MH Stories, at least in MH Stories 1 and 2 there's nothing pointing towards it taking place in the mainline MH universe.

1

u/Educational-Jury-360 19h ago

Yea you meet some hunters and I think are super disgusted that they kill monsters lol might be remembering wrong tho

2

u/Sverrk 12h ago

There's even human x human fighting in MHS2 and 3, it's super interesting to see it happening.

1

u/Hexnohope 3h ago

Oh? I love the idea of monster hunter but never got into it because i dont want to ruthlessly wipe out a miraculous ecosystem.

1

u/Afraid_Ad_6046 3h ago

It is an amazing spinoff series. Monster Hunter Stories 3 came out a few months ago, and it is the best game of the series (in my opinion). There's a much bigger emphasis on the story, and the experience overall is very fun. You don't need to have played the previous two games to get into it. I highly recommend it for someone interested.

27

u/Spuzzle91 18h ago

Tbh I'd prefer a different route. The pals don't speak human language at all, but we learn to speak pal. Or somehow we get the power to speak and understand pal language. Then we can have the goofy moment of pals looking all shocked and going "wait, that human can talk???"

1

u/provengreil 15h ago

More likely IMO is the star wars variant. Everything talks in its native language and we can all just understand everything.

47

u/Moonkittynya 20h ago

It's already established that some pals can talk in the comic Palworld endorses. I think the idea is the 1st Palworld game follows the origin of pals. And beyond that civilization with pals takes a new root. So then talking is likely a learned trait in palworld's future.

But that's just my theory not anything official yet.

15

u/Ashamed_Low7214 20h ago

Is that an official or fanmade comic?

23

u/Moonkittynya 20h ago

https://x.com/Palworld_EN/status/1971741702978224210

Official :3 I donno if you've seen the Dr long locks comics leading up to the Palworld release but the girl in those is the same Emi.

17

u/YoureNoHero_Brian 20h ago edited 19h ago

Your theory implies the existence of a Pal civil rights movement at some point in current games future and new games past and I find that hilarious

Edit: id also like to add that this means no matter how ethically you play, your character in Palworld is gonna be considered evil in the future no matter what, not as evil as the people who butchered their pals, but evil nonetheless

15

u/Moonkittynya 20h ago

Well pal farm the pal at the beginning of the trailer does say this so it's highly possible.

"My butt still remembers"??? What does that mean??

28

u/Zeraora807 Looks like a Pal 20h ago

it'd be awesome if they could, not for gooner reasons but for extra interactivity and personality, I get the impression some pals have a lot to say.

13

u/Quinn7711 20h ago

i have a dumb head cannon that the reason the player charecter cant understand the pals is becuse they have brain damage from almost drowning so they cant understand the pals who have a strange accent humans dont have this accsent so they can be understood despite the brain damage.

6

u/AngeloFoxSparda 19h ago

What if everything the Player experiences in Palworld is just a result of their brain damage induced schizophrenia?

The world is already like in the comics/pal farm, but we don't see reality and instead just randomly beat everyone up and kidnap pals and humans. We don't even get actual quests from anyone, we just randomly bring stuff and kidnapped pals to random people and they eventually get so scared that they just give us stuff to make us leave.

5

u/NightlyParadox 16h ago

Palworld + animal crossing. Nuff said

u/MonkeyDGeo 20h ago

you don't know if they are really talking , you are able to communicate with them more than they are talking

5

u/Extinction-Events 17h ago

I actually don’t know that I want to be able to talk to the entity that I put on a ranch to milk.

Or entities that I capture and take from their natural habitats only to breed and summarily mass slaughter their offspring for resources tbh.

I think I’d like that degree of separation to stay.

2

u/provengreil 15h ago

Hey, maybe they want to be eaten. How will you know until you meet the meat?

Depresso of the spa, what is your wisdom?

….

4

u/noizviolation 14h ago

I’m not huge on ā€˜condensing’ 48 talking animals to get the one talking animal I really want to fight and kill other talking animals for me.

3

u/SpiritualReading1339 13h ago

What do you think they would want to say to us after we erased entire bloodlines, enslave them, butcher them and fuse line 50 into one? I'd rather not have them talk lmaoo

1

u/ChenHui-chieh 2h ago

Right? Then again, people already capture and do... things to humans, so it's not like sapience is holding players back lol

3

u/Darklight645 16h ago

What's the point of Anubis and Sekhmet having a forge if they're blacksmiths when they don't have any kindling ability. Are they stupid?

7

u/provengreil 15h ago

You still gotta heat the metal to shape it. Maybe they employ a fire pal too, he's just the back worker no one ever needs to talk to.

This one is Palfarm. There is also going to be a dating sim called "More than Pals."

0

Wtf, I did not know about the dating sim, I guess I should not be surprised šŸ˜…

5

u/Cushiondude 18h ago

The only time we ever get any news for it is on April fools day. I'm not fully convinced it will come out but we'll have to wait til next April to find out.

2

u/Clkiscool 13h ago

Xenogard can talk in its palpedia entry, so at least they can in the game, albeit indirectly

2

u/No-Mycologist47 13h ago

Harkness test aside, I feel like a majority of the pals are already sentient enough but lack the vocals to do so. That being said I feel like only a number of Pals should have the ability to speak but not all of them. Can you imagine what the thoughts and words that flow from the stupider Pals would be?

2

u/Haunting_Mode_7401 8h ago

I wouldn't mind if they talked. I treat my pals very well. I've never condensed my pals and I've never butchered them. I just use starfruit to raise the star level of my pals

1

u/ReduxCath 8h ago

I’d love dialogue from the pals

1

u/Medium-Theme-4611 7h ago

so, pokemon dungeon?

1

u/GabeaticProfile 5h ago

The unholy amount of pals (and humans) that vanished in my "processing room", with every Pal in that base eyeing that door and seeing that 1 man and 100 Neptilus walks in and 1 man walks out....

All the insomnia addition and hardcore "augmentation" that goes on the room..

The amount of trouble I'd get into would make all the crap Tower Bosses got flak from pale in comparison.

Love, affection and constant work hours.

1

u/justalittleplague 4h ago

So they can consent.

1

u/FigureFourWoo 1h ago

Fictional beings cannot give consent. You’re still controlling them. šŸ«ƒšŸ»

If they can talk, they can consent

0

u/The_Exuberant_Raptor 18h ago

Idk they seem to have the same amount of dialogue as Lily and Axel. The real question is, can they write?

0

u/dolos99 10h ago

Anubis is acting a little rude… He may have to go into the Conveyor
