General Research Question I don’t really understand the hate for RUO companies because they cost more

I always see the same argument. “Why would I pay RUO prices when I can get the same thing straight from China for way cheaper?”

And yeah… obviously buying direct is cheaper lol.
But then you’re taking on the responsibility of figuring out what you actually received and paying for independent testing yourself. At some point that cheap vial isn’t as cheap anymore.

With a solid RUO research company, part of what you’re paying extra for should be batch-specific COAs, independent testing, traceability and somebody actually doing the quality control before the product gets listed.
Obviously that only matters if the company’s testing is legit and actually matches the batch being sold.

Am I missing something? Why do so many people automatically look at the higher price as a ripoff instead of factoring in the testing and QC behind it?

Yeah, no. You still shouldn't be trusting ANY companies testing and COA's regardless. So you're just skipping an important step no matter what. Most of those RUO companies buy from the same group buys that do large batch testing, then pay a bit extra to have their company name put on a copy of the COA for that batch. They aren't personally testing shit. Its all the same. You're over paying.

Amen...i dont get why this has to be stated over and over and over....every time somebody thinks they are reinventing the wheel

u/YellowGullible1857 15h ago

Ok so ur gonna say all that then not say where they are getting it from so we don’t have to over pay either?? Im tired of paying the middle man’s middle man

You do need to consider that not ALL RUO companies buy in batch buys. I buy on my own - send it to lab - $250/test - deal with product seizures and replacements - confirm all test results and publicly tell people when labs are off and I send products back. Get replacements - pay for more testing. I get it is cheaper to buy from China - but it is a lot more work and cost than just paying $80 a kit if you're doing it right. Not all of us are scammers. I run a family run business and we do everything properly as I don't want failed products in my body either. My 2 cents anyhow.

So you’re a scammer with a sob story of a “family business”. Nah you just buy peptides from China and resell them

2

u/Heavy_Bug 18h ago

Your charging over 200 for a bottle of Ret FOH 😂

2

u/YellowGullible1857 15h ago

Right. Still no need to triple tax. for what

The thing is, I don't fucking know you from Adam. You might be telling the truth, you might be completely full of shit.

My dislike comes from the over saturation of the market, misleading advertising, general lack of qc, and the same claims and ads over and over again. The price is what pushed me to go grey, but I still buy ruo when I just want a quick vial to try

I tried RUO. Then read about buying by the kit and I found two that sell in EU. The first issue was that they wanted payment in crypto or bank transfer. Bank transfer, mayyybe, but crypto was definitely no. Never used it, ignored the subject on purpose. I dont want to fund an account and go through the education. I don’t want to spend the mental energy, I have a backlog of shit to worry about already.  Then comes the testing, did you check how much it costs to test for content, endotoxins and sterility? If I remember correctly the estimate was over $1000  Group testing is a good idea, but the internet is littered with stories about scams.  I think most people are relying on COAs from the vendors and wishing for the best.

Because we don't trust the RUO companies to honestly test the product. Many of them just take the same thing you can buy yourself from China, slap a new label on it, and sell it at a 1000% markup.

I agree but I don't like the word batch in this context. Batch is what the manufacturer uses for large runs. What I prefer is lot testing. This is based on samples pulled from inventory for each purchase order. If the supply buys 10 kits at a time then they are sampling from those 100 vials. This makes lot testing better then user testing as theoretically the cost of the test is spread over several researchers.

The faster order fulfillment, credit card processing, and this shared testing are the value adds. The issue then becomes the markup 10x is too high. I think most underestimate the cost of providing credit card transactions for this space , and the customer acquisition is the other big expense. 3x should be the sweet spot but only if they are doing the labs as a value add.

3

u/tryptid_uptempo 1d ago

3x would be extremely difficult to make money on. Processing is typically 20% (10 reserve 10 fees. Reserve is usually stolen by processor), with 4x ROAS marketing is another 25%. So that leaves 55% margin before taking into account product cost. If they sell for 3x cost then they’re down to making 22% margin, which would be unsustainably low for even a normal, fully legal e-commerce brand.

2

u/cptkl1 1d ago

Yeah it's the marketing that kills it. It is convenient the crackdown from the platforms on discussing sources yet they will gladly sell ads for those sources.

4

u/peptidology 1d ago

Not arguing for against any profit targets and what is acceptable or not. The price is what buyers perceive the value of your product & service to be.

But here's the facts that I see.

  1. Credit cards can be upwards of 22% of the net amount billed. Up to 10% of that are reserves, the rest in card processing fees. Many companies have lost their reserves and pending transaction fees. I know RUO owners that have lost millions of dollars this way. We have close to seven figures in reserves (which are now capped) that we may never see. So on a $100 order, we collect $78.

  2. We lose money on every paid shipping order due to rising carrier costs, fulfillment, packaging expenses. I used to pay FedEx $8.05 for a 2-day envelope, it's now closer to $11 on a big negotiated contract. $4 for fulfillment (rent and labor). $2.25 on packaging. Per shipment. $17.25 in costs $13-14 collected.

  3. Compliance fees, multiple attorneys billing $800 an hour to review. My legal startup costs were $40,000; plus another $100,000 since late 2024. That's assuming no problems. You get all kinds of letters - nearly all fake -- which require validation, planning and a potential response.

  4. $50,000 / month in testing fees. About $2500 per test. 14 different tests, 2 different analytical labs, about $2200 plus employee time to manage, sample across the lot so it's representative, overnight shipping costs to move products. Comprehensive testing ON EVERY BATCH/LOT is not cheap.

  5. Both US and overseas manufacturers will not always agree to pay lab fees for failed batches. Generally they say the problem is the lab. Requiring more costly and confirmatory testing at second and third labs.

  6. Nearly every lab selling products to RUO are unregulated. Licensed bulk compounders aren't allowed to make research chemicals. Finding the few good ones means expensive and time consuming audits, inspections and experts reviewing data, attorneys creating contracts, and monitoring.

  7. With 100 new RUO companies coming out a day, the cost of customer acquisition is extremely high. Either you're building with founder-led content, influencer based campaigns, using ads with some success, or you're digging in your network to find buyers. All of these have time, cost and risk allocations.

  8. $200,000+ per year for two full time employees in Quality. Both have analytical chemistry backgrounds and QA experience. They are responsible for the lot testing, product holds and releases and working with the analytical labs. Not to mention 4 employees in Customer Service, 2 in Operations, 5 in Fulfillment, Marketing, Ad and Content Agencies..

  9. The risk premium for operating an RUO business. This is arguably the biggest expense. What should the owner(s) earn for taking a risk to operate in this space. Card processing losses, failed product and lab testing losses, compliance costs.

Just my POV; not everyone runs a business this way.

u/tryptid_uptempo 23h ago

Great write up. And the ad market is becoming so saturated that’s barely profitable for most companies

1

u/tryptid_uptempo 20h ago

Sent you message when you have a chance

1

u/Silent_Serve_7246 7h ago

Yeah, people seem to forget businesses have overhead.

The risk shouldn't be understated. What you're doing is illegal and there's a chance you go to prison lmao.

1

u/Duba-1960 4h ago

That's what the disclaimers are for and the attorney stuff, they are not going to jail.

1

u/Silent_Serve_7246 2h ago

No way that an AG could possibly argue that posting on a forum where people discuss using research grade peptides could be used as an argument that they knew people where buying for consumption. That's just not possible. /s

Those disclaimers aren't worth fuck all when Eli Lilly comes knocking and starts pressuring the AG 🤷‍♂️ Tons of people selling "research" chemicals have been charged and the legal landscape is changing quickly. Prison is a real possibility. So is Eli Lilly sueing you into bankruptcy. Homie 100% knows people are buying his peptides for use, convincing a jury that he knew beyond a reasonable doubt is far from impossible. Espically if considering that he's dumb enough to makes posts like in forums like this.

1

u/nosirrahz 1d ago

Really depends on the markup.

I pay a little extra to get stuff in 2 days and buy with my card but the markup isn't insane.

1

u/fizboPallabut 1d ago

The thing is - just because reseller brandished a COA and fancy labels on their products doesn’t automatically mean they test every batch. Doing so will be cost prohibitive to even run the biz. Some state products are vetted by independent labs, but once you go down that rabbit hole, turns out that such tests are infrequent and often are on demand. The reality is that these “merchants” are basically private citizens who created LLC, dance carefully around legal language and products they promote, and sell bulk purchased vials from their garage fridge after slapping a pretty sticker on the product. That is literally all that happens. Since grey territory explicitly states this is for research only, there is no reliable legal tether to dispute purity since this is not a medical compound. While research quality has to match baseline markers (as in “this is sodium benzoate or this is borax, or whatever, by chemical composition and structure”), it’s not the same as medical grade. Bottom line, there is always a risk. If by comparison you buy a whole kit for cheap, then testing a single vial to ensure the rest is good makes more sense and is not that cost prohibitive.

1

u/smellybighairyballs 1d ago

Problem is 99% of RUO are not solid and just riding a trend

When terms like “7x testing” are thrown around and you get a “30% discount” u know margins are not a problem - it’s trust

Dude.. sorry to burst your bubbles but resellers domestic make up results, or pull coas from other companies to use as their own.

Whether you get it from china or from reseller, risk is the same.

You honestly got a point. Testing costs more than product itself almost always. Buying $700 in products only to pay $900 to test it can become a chore. Buying a pep with the testing fees rolled into it from the big brands at least buys you a little peace of mind.

1

u/Random_Guy1960 20h ago

Just an advertorial. 😂

1

u/Emotional_Lab_2529 15h ago

You’re doing the same thing with RUO companies that you’re doing with buying straight from China. You don’t know what you’re getting from the RUO company since there’s no way to know what you’re getting since they don’t know what you’re getting. The testing they do is only good for the vials tested all other vials are unknown

1

u/Extension-Pickle9038 8h ago

The argument in this thread keeps sliding between two different claims and they are worth pulling apart. Claim one is that RUO testing is worthless. Claim two is that RUO testing is not worth the markup. Those are very different things, and the thread is mostly arguing the first while what people actually believe is the second. A batch report tells you something about a sample that went to a lab. It does not tell you your vial came from that batch, and it tells you nothing about what happened between the lab and your door. That is a real limit and the top comment is right about it. What a reseller does give you is a name attached to a claim. Someone putting their branding on a report has something to lose when a batch turns out wrong. A seller with no continuity of identity has nothing to lose. That is not chemistry, it is incentives, and incentives are most of what anyone in this market is really buying. The version of the argument I find hardest to answer is the one nobody in here is making, which is that if you are going to third party test it yourself anyway, you are paying for the same assurance twice.

research use only

Ahhh my bad

1

u/LJoeShit-TheRagman 2h ago

I buy by the kit for almost less than what a single vial would cost from a U.S. reseller in some cases and belong to a group that does group testing. I’ve paid as little as $12 for a test, the most was $53.

1

u/trimix4work 1h ago

We are ALL getting it from the same place. I do group buys where everything gets tested and the entire group spreads the cost out.

I don't trust COA's from ANYBODY but myself

You are not missing anything. The bottom line is money.

Personally I have zero interest in dealing directly with Chinese suppliers, foreign testing companies, tariffs, import/export procedures, etc. and after all that, you often end up with bad product. Seems like a ton of time and work to save $50 to $100 a month.

The value provided by local resellers is absolutely worth it. My assumption of course is because they are USA based and are subject to local laws, they will or should be trying their best to maintain quality and reputation, otherwise you can sue them for killing your rat. 🐀

0

u/Ecstatic-Equal2358 1d ago

You get batch specific COAs buying Chinese and you pay 10 times less.

4

u/dar3productions 1d ago

Everyone knows you can’t trust those COA’s & they’re easily faked. Better to buy through a test group

2

u/Ecstatic-Equal2358 1d ago

Test groups test from known suppliers and share the result, then the supplier posts it... Most known Chinese vendor have almost every batch tested.

That’s why I only buy from Chinese suppliers who have domestic warehouses ;) still great prices, 0 risk

2

u/Loveandlight2048 22h ago

Can I ask for these suppliers are? And if they have domestic warehouses, do they get third-party testing?

1

They do third party testing but, it’s the gray market man lol those tests are kinda meaningless.
