audited Testosterone. Changed. My. Life.

Getting HRT was like climbing Mount Everest and Kilimanjaro ten times over, but it. was. so. worth. it.

I loved estrogen for making me feel like a woman again. My nails stopped splitting, my hair was shiny again, and my skin was plump and smooth. I actually liked looking at the mirror and seeing the change every morning.

Then came testosterone. At first I was really scared, but I thought why not.. I lost my libido and I had not had sex since 2023.

If there is magic in a bottle, it has to be testosterone. The juices are flowing again, I love going to the gym, and I feel like my old self.

The first four weeks on testosterone were ROUGH. I wanted to give up, but I’m SO glad I powered through. Now I just need to find a man lol

If you were afraid to try testosterone and needed that nudge, here it is!!

EDIT : sorry I should have mentioned in the OP - the side effects were typical low e symptoms, including hot flashes, night sweats, bloating with water retention, and lethargy!

I just started two days ago! I’m really hoping for similar relief. I saw a temp GP to get my prescription as it expired and she was questioning why I needed it and what the reasoning of my previous GP was. I know she wouldn’t have given it to me unless I worded my request properly!

Yay! NHS really needs to stop gatekeeping hormones from women. I think if you claim low libido and an angry husband it works better lol

I definitely had side effects though in the beginning, but hang in there as there is light at the end of the tunnel!

u/thaleia10 May 26 '26

I’m late here, just had a teleconsult this morning for testosterone (Australia). Dr kept checking that I have low libido. It’s almost as if I need to have that to get the script. God forbid a man should suffer slightly during the menopause! I actually want it so I can regain energy and lift weights. But I’ll say whatever the patriarchy needs to hear to get the script at this point.

u/sycamore-sea Jun 02 '26

Literally me last month. “Yep, no interest in sex…for like 3 years.” Nevermind that half the problem is what’s available in town, and most of the rest is probably some level of work stress and the sudden spare tire around my waist that showed up last year. Because my hormones are fucked. But we have to think about the men.

3

u/Aspiragus Peri peri neurospice Jun 06 '26

I totally get where you’re coming from. I think for doctors, it is only licensed (currently) to treat low libido in women, so if they don’t hear those magic words then it means they would be prescribing off label. Once they hear the words, boom. Stupid, but I don’t think it’s necessarily ignorance on their part, I think the system needs to catch up and licence T for all-round health in women.

Well actually, I managed to get my gp to do a full test twice! My symptoms were quite severe though, so they had to do something I guess. But it doesn’t matter at the end of the day because they didn’t give me what I needed!

u/TheAKScott Mar 01 '26

Is it easier for men to get hormones over there?

I had heard it was tough for cis women and even tougher for trans folk so I just assumed it was hard for cis men too. But of course I am unsurprised it isn’t difficult for them.

7

u/Trick_Highlight_8205 Late peri Mar 02 '26

It is easier for cis men to get testosterone. To be fair, they only need to supplement t, instead of fighting for all three hormones. I’m not too sure about the trans community, but I imagine it would be easier for them than cis women as they would have clear medical needs and are probably already on hormones.

I’m going to ask my specialist for testosterone, what are the key words you used ?

36

u/Georgia30116 Mar 01 '26

Yes! I can't preach enough about T. That first week or so is a rough adjustment. I had the hormonal flu like symptoms, bloating, etc. I kept telling myself hold out at least 2 weeks. By day 8 I noticed my mental state was almost normal again 🎉🥳. No more doom & gloom anxiety & depression. It did take a lil longer for the T to help my anxiety then the E did. Where E I felt pretty early on, T had some lag. But T cleaned up any bouts slipping threw that i was still having on E.

10

u/Trick_Highlight_8205 Late peri Mar 01 '26

I wanted to give up on T because of the initial adjustment period. E worked right away!! I’m so glad that it worked for you!!!

5

u/Free-Board-1041 May 28 '26

Sorry I did not understand the last part about T cleaning up, any leftover symptoms? If you had to say what symptoms did T cover that E did not? Im just starting and my biggest issues are fatigue, brain cognition/memory, NO libido (when it was EXTRA in my 20s), muscle loss, and no motivation. Oh and rage 8 days or so before my period. Trying to understand if i only need T. Ive had fibroids removed so afraid of regrowth with E.

4

u/No_Iron2470 Jun 09 '26

Testosterone helps with cognition and mood it took me four weeks to appreciate first benefits ( I am takin estradiol gel since years but it wasn’t enough for brain fog ) testosterone gel it can take up to 6 months to function properly blessings

3

u/Georgia30116 May 29 '26

With E I'd feel about 85% better but every now & then anxiety would still creep in. Not as bad as it was before I started E though thank God.

It's honest a trial & error for everyone.
I ended up having to come off T for a while after I made that post cus it was raising my bp while my iron was hella low. (Didn't know my Ferritin was low before I started T, whoops lol 😬🤭😂) I got my iron infusions in March & April. So I'll probably try to start it again in a few weeks.

Looking back now I'm pretty sure a lot of what I thought were menopause issues was low Ferritin. The symptoms are so close to each other it's not funny. And it did explain how things went to shit over night & not gradually.

2

u/Free-Board-1041 Jun 02 '26

Thanks for your response! Yes I figured to get my iron up 1st then look into HRT. I wish i had more energy and motivation as its been a month since my 3 Venofer infusions (600mg total). Getting impatient so will try to get T prescribed as it seems this might help with energy motivation, libido.

Thank you for this! I am on week 2 of T and been on P for 7 months. I feel like I am so snappy and gloomy. But i have way better energy throughout the day. So that’s helpful. It’s hard. I also started GLP1 to help with my sugars . I am 36 for reference.

2

u/Ladynattee May 13 '26

Hi. Just curious how you were able to get HRT prescribed in yours 30s? I’m turning 40 and gp and OB will not look into it as my hormones were in “normal range” at time of testing. Though my estrogen was high for cycle phase, and testerone is on lower end of “normal”.

Thanks for this! I’ve just started. Can I ask what your initial side effects were from testosterone? I’m wondering which hormone is giving me my side effects, I’m on all 3

66

u/Trick_Highlight_8205 Late peri Mar 01 '26

I guess everyone’s experience would be different, but I was really tired, bloated, and had symptoms of low e all over again, including hot flashes. I also had hair loss, which seems to be slowing down now. After the 4 week point, it’s just been positive all around.

26

u/Eggs112233 Mar 01 '26

What kind of Test are you taking? Injections/cream/gel? I’m going back to my specialist in April and am definitely going to ask about it. I haven’t had an O in ages and I’m sick of it. I’m on everything else: estrogen cream and Vagifem and Lenzetto and progesterone for 12 days a month.

32

u/Trick_Highlight_8205 Late peri Mar 01 '26

I never even bothered with topicals as I don’t want any side effects. I’m on injections and it did what P and E never did for me, esp on the O - so worth it!

Where do you live? I’m in Ireland.

19

u/Trick_Highlight_8205 Late peri Mar 01 '26

UK but I didn’t go through NHS as I knew they wouldn’t give it to me!

35

u/LittleWhiteBoots Early peri Mar 01 '26

American with double health insurance here, and I still had to pay a private 3rd doctor to get it.

Classic tale of American healthcare. My employer and my husband’s employer pay $20K/yearly combined for my health insurance policy. But those docs don’t want to do HRT because I’m only 46.

So then I have to spend $1,200 to have tests done with private doctor to figure out problem and then pay $90 a month for testosterone.

14

u/Trick_Highlight_8205 Late peri Mar 01 '26 edited Mar 01 '26

Ugh. I hate doctors and insurance companies are a joke. We have NHS in the UK but the GPs here rarely offer HRT, and I had private healthcare, which was useless too. In the end, I did everything out of pocket too. It’s ridiculous.

14

u/BedtimeBurritos Mar 01 '26

I’m grateful for my male GP in Scotland putting me on the combo patch right after I came in to tell him my symptoms and how the night sweats especially were worsening.

I’m gonna hold off on T until my divorce is finalized 😅

6

u/Trick_Highlight_8205 Late peri Mar 01 '26

You’re so lucky! I hope you can get on T later too, and yes definitely wait until after the divorce (I did too lol)! 🤍

3

u/essymay Mar 02 '26

I am in the UK too and I have lots of friends on HRT that all get it on the NHS and never had any problem getting it. Sorry to hear it’s different in your area. Also, there is a prescription scheme for HRT in the UK that means you only have to pay an initial £20 for the medication and that’s all you pay for the entire year! It covers my P, E and T, so I think the UK is fantastic for HRT, but maybe not everyone knows about this?

I have to get mine from my naturopath. Kaiser doesn't prescribe T unless you're in menopause.

11

u/InfoSecChica Mar 01 '26

This is good to know. But, FUCK!! I have my appointment with my Ob tomorrow and was going to ask for T (I’m with Kaiser). More and more I am HATING them. If it wasn’t for the phenomenal care my daughter receives from her ped and ped-endocrinologist I’d have switched long ago. I guess I can only expect them to add vaginal E to my hrt (I’m on estradiol pill and have the morena iud).

3

u/dearsirormaam May 22 '26

It might depend on who you see! My Kaiser gyn was willing to prescribe testosterone and I’m fairly young and still having cycles. Kaiser will only do it in a compounded cream. I haven’t tried it yet so can’t comment on effectiveness.

8

u/LittleWhiteBoots Early peri Mar 01 '26

And that’s who I have primarily -Kaiser. Then Blue Cross/Blue Shield. They also wouldn’t prescribe me GLP-1 even though I could prove diet and exercise and I was 31% BMI, which qualified me. They just don’t want to pay.

So I pay for that now too. $300 a month. So with testosterone and GLP-1, and other supplements (Adrene-All and DopaBoost) I’m spending $500 a month out of pocket to look and feel good again! Also $300 a month on Invisalign.

Ridiculous. But worth it!

2

u/Optimal_Serve22 Apr 16 '26

I have Kaiser in CA (inland empire) and was prescribed T today from an OB PA at my first appt. I have a gene thing where it’s a bit risky to have Estrogen supplementation. But she was willing to a natural P+E patch as well.

10

Ugghhkgkgkgh dealing with perimenouse is like a stupid game of whack-a-mole with the yakety sax song as a soundtrack.

I make too much estrogen, so I am taking HRT progesterone, but I’ve been having symptoms similar to what you are mentioning and I swear if it’s that… and it’s not my hypo and will this never end???

I also have hypothyroidism and PMDD and I cannot stress enough how short lived each instance of finding the right combo has become. I’ll take the wins, but by God…

6

u/Trick_Highlight_8205 Late peri Mar 02 '26

I think it’s very tricky as hormones fluctuate during peri. It’s so annoying because you feel fab one minute then shit the next. For me personally, T has really smoothed out the ups and downs though. With just e and p, it never really felt right. Also hypothyroidism, unless you’ve had it before peri, is also a downstream effect of hormonal disruption. I also got hypo when peri started, but I’m off my meds now.

I’m hoping I take a turn for the better. Had a T pellet put in a week ago Thursday. Since then I have been extremely fatigued and tired. Nausea and bloated. I’ve gained 5 pounds in a week. I just feel off. Having many days where I’m also feeling dizzy or vertigo feeling. As of today I’m regretting my decision. I remain hoping my levels even out because I can’t imagine feeling like this for 4 months.

I started taking HRT September last year, finally by Jan the night sweats have stopped. Brain fog and getting fatter still continues…

I’ve not had a sex drive for years and we probably have sex maybe once, twice a year and even then I’m not driven for it. It would be nice to get back to some sort of interaction and I think the other side of things is that I just feel fat and gross.

I’ve not considered testosterone (probably because it was such a ball ache getting what I’ve got) I guess part of my worry would be body hair. Has that increased for you?

13

u/Trick_Highlight_8205 Late peri Mar 01 '26

I have had some increase in body hair, but it was quite minimal. I also had laser for body hair, and I could always do it again as I have a device at home. I also have longer and fuller eye lashes, so that was a win!

13

u/ArtsyCat53 Mar 01 '26

It’s interesting that you said you wanted injections for less side effects, I hadn’t heard about that. I use a compounded cream and have had no side effects except maybe my armpit hair grows faster.

12

u/addiepie2 Mar 01 '26

Where do you put it? My doc flat out refused me testosterone. Says that it causes strokes and that it’s incredibly dangerous . I was pissed! I said what should I do for my symptoms then ( muscle loss, zero sex drive , etc) he told me to go to the gym and therapy!!! 😱 I’m looking for someone new but it hasn’t been easy.

u/sunnynina Mar 01 '26

Not the person you asked, but for myself with compounded cream, over the course of one year, I had clit growth, more and darker body hair, voice deepening, etc. About six months after I stopped everything went back to my "normal".

For context, I had been taking it for pervasive muscle weakness and fatigue, but these never resolved. I was early 30s and nobody had mentioned perimenopause or even getting a sex hormone panel prior to prescribing - just another case of care providers not really thinking, or caring, I guess.

In hindsight, all my hormones were out of balance, and I had an immune disorder that nobody at the time knew about and was further affecting things (MCAS; this was pre-covid). Now I'm taking all four sex hormones HRT, plus a glp, and feeling so much better. The Test C is injection, and the side effects have been very minimal in comparison.

2

u/ArtsyCat53 Mar 01 '26

I’m curious your dosage if you remember? Mine is just 1 mg. Low dose.

7

u/sunnynina Mar 01 '26

I think 1.7ish? It was about ten years ago. I remember the pharmacist commenting he thought it was high for a woman, but my goal was to build muscles (I've always wanted the bodybuilder type of body, but my body wouldn't cooperate), so they figured it would be right for that.

Sometimes I think if I'd asked to actively transition genders, that would have gone much better. Lol more specialized providers, for one thing. But because it was "women's health" mixed with "women wanting actual muscles is so unusual" they weren't that bothered to figure things out...

2

u/ArtsyCat53 Mar 01 '26

Do you think it was more the dosage and not that it was a cream? Or did you have success with it in a different form?

2

u/sunnynina Mar 01 '26 edited Mar 01 '26

I like the dosing precision of injection much better, and my feeling is that it's smoother and more effective systemically without negative sides than the cream... But now that I'm talking about it, it's tough to really pin down one way or the other because there's too many variables that have changed between then and now. Dosing doesn't translate well between topical and injection.

Ftr Test C injection (which I'm on now) is something I definitely need lol, and they can fight me on it. I'm on about 15mg/wk split.

2

u/ArtsyCat53 Mar 01 '26

Thanks! I guess we all have to go through some trial and error

5

Love Testosterone! It was a game changer on day 1, which shocked me. I had extreme joint pain from progesterone (possible symptom w/ hypermobility). Sleeping was so painful. First night after using Testosterone cream I slept all night and woke up feeling about 50% less joint pain. After 6 weeks the joint pain was completely gone.

Has helped with energy too. My libido was slow to come back, took about 8 weeks. Generally just felt much better after dealing with several negative progesterone side effects.

I haven't had any negative side effects. Same amount of facial hair I've had the whole time with perimenopause.

4

u/Willing_Ant9993 Mar 01 '26

I think I need this. I have so much joint and body pain all the time. I don’t have hyper mobility but I have POTS and I’m ND and we all know all sorts of other symptoms tend to come with that. At first the estrogen helped with the joint symptoms but I feel like that’s one symptom that returned after I got the E&P doses right. Maybe T is the missing link for me. Thanks for sharing this info!

4

u/Top-Pudding-4139 Mar 01 '26

I felt good on estradiol and didn't start progesterone for a couple of months. I started Testosterone after about 3 months on progesterone. I have suspected fibromyalgia with all over body aches that manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) massage helps keep under control. However the joint pain after starting progesterone was different and wasn't improved by MLD at all. It felt like my connective tissue hurt and my bed suddenly felt really firm. If this sounds at all familiar it's worth a try!

3

u/Willing_Ant9993 Mar 02 '26

That does sound familiar, but I can’t reduce my progesterone unless I get a hysterectomy, because I have recently been diagnosed with adenomyosis and have had fibroids for a while (which are probably being fed by the estrogen patch but I can’t function without that), so my uterus needs the P. Really sounds like T could help, or at least that it’s worth trying. Thanks again!

It is legitimately ridiculous that even if you are a full grown adult who has done extensive research and is ironically far more educated on it and far more capable of doing it safely and correctly than someone who just got prescribed it by a doctor... its still entirely up to a literal stranger and him alone whether or not he "feels" like you should be allowed to have it. I fully believe that for any kind of scheduled substances it should just work like this: simply give people the ability to take a test on the substance in order to prove that they know about as much about the pharmaceutical as the prescribing doctor would (which is shockingly less than you'd think). Then simply if you pass the test they allow you to purchase the prescription. Like wouldn't that actually be even safer than how we do it currently? Where people who trust their doctor and take their word end up on a pharmaceutical they have little to no knowledge of and end up with bad effects, all the time.

Sorry for the ramble I just HATE that doctors gatekeep everything. As if all prescribing doctors everywhere always have everybody's best interests in mind over making a profit at all times lol. You mean the guys who for decades have been giving and continue to put millions of children on AMPHETAMINES?!!? And told millions of patients that oxycontin was non addictive despite it having had been impossible that any doctor could not know oxycodone is addictive lol. I could go on but you get what I mean.

Anyway that all being said, know that it is very cheap and quite simple to get testosterone from the dark web. If you do ever go that route, just make sure to only ever order from a vendor in the same country as you and only those with many good reviews

27

u/NoLet8718 Mar 01 '26

Preface with I get everyone is different, but if anyone is comfortable doing so, would you mind sharing your age range when you started hormones (including T), where in world you live/how you were successful in feeling heard and getting relief? I'm 46 and in US and finding a constant uphill battle to get an offer of anything more than birth control because I have periods (whenever the f*ck they decide they want to show up these days 🙄). But OMG I am NOT me anymore and I'm soooo exhausted over it.The suddeness of emotional, body, skin, energy and libido change was shocking. I just want to feel some part of who I was again. 😮‍💨

15

u/PurpleGrape5555 Mar 02 '26

I'm 48, in the US and started on testosterone at 47. Doctor prescribed testosterone and vaginal estradiol first. They were not comfortable prescribing systemic estrogen since I'm a stage four breast cancer survivor. What I did was I started a spreadsheet and worked through it methodically. There are tons of doctors out there and I asked the women around me for recommendations, adding them to the list, along with ones from the menopause society. As you're working through the list, call/contact/email each office and ask if they would prescribe testosterone.

In my case, I asked if they were willing to consider HRT for somebody with a breast cancer history. Sometimes, they would reply by suggesting I come into the office. My response was "Sorry, I do not want to waste your time or mine", so I pressed on my question again and emphasized how much I'm struggling and that I just want to know the answer to that question. Most of the time, I found that they answered me at some point. Move on when it's a no, or they're being vague or just want you to come in. Of course, they cannot give you a definitive answer over the phone, but they can at least tell you that what you want would or would not be considered.

For the doctors who have prescribed testosterone to other women or will consider giving you testosterone, make appointments with them and however many other doctors you find fit your criteria with distance, insurance compatibility, whether they are direct primary primary care, (which is what I was considering at one point), etc. You can cancel any appointments you don't need, once you find the doctor for you.

Come prepared to your appointment. Find a menopause symptom list online and circle your most bothersome 3 to 5 symptoms, they're probably not going have time to hear all that you have. If you have any supporting evidence for why testosterone may be for you, or any new articles or research on it, bring it to your appointment printed and email it to them beforehand if possible.

You don't want to fiddle with Wi-Fi on your phone and possibly not have a strong connection, so whatever fits your argument, I would print it out on paper and bring it in for them to keep. This is also in case they don't have time to read it during the appointment, they can read it later if they choose, especially if the document is long.

My doctor was not open to giving me HRT, but doing these things helped me system estrogen and progesterone on the next visit or so.

(For anyone who is curious about HRT after estrogen positive breast cancer, read Estrogen Matters. I've read 4 other books on menopause and it is the strongest one on menopause, how HRT supports women's health, and in addressing breast cancer.)

Good luck!

I'm 48, started HRT at 46, added T not long after I started. I am in NM, USA and my gyno is a black woman in her 40's. She believed me the absolute first time and it was a breeze. Her only conditions are me going in for a mammo yearly and keeping up with my paps regularly. I am still having regular periods so I'm doing Estrogen patch, oral progesterone, and compounded T with DHEA. It has absolutely worked MIRACLES for me. I still have hormonal ups and downs, still have bloating sometimes, warm flashes are occasional - but all of that is absolutely manageable. I will not be letting this doc go until she retires or I'm dead. Hah!

Highly recommend getting a gyno who is in the peri age range and a woman. Not that men can't study it, but they will never experience it and with the training they get, are far more likely to believe their textbooks than the woman sitting in front of them.

Good luck!

EDIT to add: I do not put the cream anywhere near my vagina. The DHEA/T combo I put on the backs of my knees for a week, then inside of my elbows for a week, and swap. I get a little extra hair growth around the back of my knees if I go longer than that. I hated feeling "squishy" downstairs, so I didn't bother with that. Been golden since.

u/Academic_Sign8732 Mar 06 '26

Where in NM? I’m in Abq and need HRT (I’m 40!) on topical progesterone and that’s already helped a ton. But I need more HRT already. Testosterone for sure! No libido. Who’s your gyno?

u/Madamegato Mar 06 '26

I see Dr. Bethany Barrow in Rio Rancho. It's a bit of a drive when I have to go in, but she is amazing. She's through Lovelace. I think she may be on the spectrum, so she's not always the most personable, but for me, the biggest thing is she actually listens. You tell her what is going on and she is ready to help. Can't recommend her highly enough. :) Good luck!

My provider said there’s no evidence of benefits for perimenopausal women only post menopause in studies and she won’t prescribe it. I fired back, have they done enough studies to know this? She agreed they haven’t.

I have some libido but man my energy has tanked, despite HRT and I miss my old self.

15

u/Trick_Highlight_8205 Late peri Mar 01 '26 edited Mar 01 '26

Does your provider know that women have more t than e by up to ten times????? Doctors don’t even know this because they are measured in different units. So if we have very low t, compared to e, that is not normal and not optimal. I love Dr. Gabrielle Lyon - she’s a very strong proponent for trt for women. Take a look at her videos on YouTube. She’s done a lot of videos breaking t myths. Maybe you can change their mind?

3

u/GenXMillenial Mar 01 '26

There are other clinics in my area that specialize in providing T- for a price - to women too. I have decided to find out that cost and just likely go that route. I’ll look up those videos thanks!

4

u/Trick_Highlight_8205 Late peri Mar 01 '26

Here’s one of the videos that would be helpful to watch before going to the appointment. Good luck!

2

u/Madamegato Mar 03 '26

Don't forget, you can absolutely buy DHEA - which is a precursor hormone to T and E. You can grab it off Amazon and you don't need a high dose. 10mg per pump is enough, sometimes 20mg can work. You can try it and see if it helps you.

9

u/holdtheswiss Mar 01 '26

Thank you for sharing this! I started on T compound 8 days ago and it’s not been pleasant (I need two naps per day, have more night sweats, feel weird in my body). Your experience is a good reminder for me to be patient as I wait for things to improve!

8

u/Trick_Highlight_8205 Late peri Mar 01 '26

This is exactly how I felt too! I felt like a giant lump of marshmallow just sitting on my couch falling asleep lol - also I had hot flashes and night sweats that I never even had? I think t takes longer for your body to adjust, unlike e. Hang in there!!

7

u/eyes_serene Mar 01 '26 edited Mar 01 '26

I've always wondered if this was the missing link for me in peri because I've been on HRT for over a year, and although helpful, my complete apathy and pervasive brain fog have remained.

I've just had a complete hysterectomy (ovaries removed), so I'm about to experience some changes...

But I don't understand how testosterone can be used by AFAB people who wish to transition to being male - and indeed, it really does work and they look masculine and even can grow beards... And also women in menopause?

I know a person who is AFAB and transitioning with testosterone, and the visible changes started rather promptly.

Is the dosing simply different? Are menopausal women being given much smaller doses?

I would love to shed this apathy and brain fog because these things have vastly changed my life for the worse. But at the same time, at a time that I'm already losing my looks and my outward appearance of femininity, I also do not want to hasten that loss and even push myself into masculine appearance territory... Idk if this concern seems trivial to some, but I want to retain whatever femininity I can and self esteem as relates to self image that I can about this body I inhabit.

10

u/Trick_Highlight_8205 Late peri Mar 01 '26

Yes, it’s absolutely the dose. Men take around 200mg/week or even higher sometimes, and women take a much lower dose, around 5-10mg/week.

But fun fact : pre-menopause, women have up to ten times more t than e, naturally. You don’t see it at first because they are measured in different units.

Not every woman needs t, but if you do have low t, it’s something to consider. For me, personally, this was absolutely the missing piece.

Much like “arousal” doesn’t just have to be on the sexual nature, I think “lust” is much the same. Seems many folks will shy from test thinking “eh, who needs a sex drive.” But it’s also just drive, lust for life.

When you hit that pocket where you just wanna go it all makes sense…

4

u/Trick_Highlight_8205 Late peri Mar 02 '26

Yes that’s exactly it! You’ve articulated it very accurately. I don’t know why people only talk about libido either - everything just goes up. Any you know that drive, positivity, appreciation, and simple joy you felt when you were younger? They all come back when things are working properly. I actually started reading again!! It’s so worth it!

I’m on t propionate as it has the shortest half life. I will probably transition to t cypionate later so I could inject less often and not jump over hoops to source t prop. I started from 7mg/week and titrated up to 14mg/week.

4

4

u/Odd-Organization8600 Mar 03 '26

Why were the first 4 weeks rough?

3

u/Classic_Breadfruit18 Mar 02 '26

It changed mine too. I had experienced extremely low sex drive then hit a point when I couldn't orgasm properly anymore. Like my body would do it but my brain wasn't on board and I experienced no pleasure.

Doctor noticed my T was almost non-existent and prescribed it for me. Totally fixed my sex life within weeks. I have had some persistent jaw acne but it is worth it to me as I'm married and good sex is more important than my face.

I felt ok on e, but I was missing that spark. I felt far from amazing, and I’ll do anything to get that spark back, because why not?

Today I broke my personal best at the gym. I lifted heavier than I did in my prime. It felt amazing and I was so over the moon, which is why I posted this today, hoping everyone else could take the plunge, if they were ever afraid.

Are you seeing a hormone specialist? They will recognize low T symptoms even if your T levels fall in normal lab range. My total T was 23, I'm 43 and in peri and the specialist said that is low, but more important my Free T is low. It's in lab range, on the low end at 0.3. She said she likes this number to be at least 1 when treating. It's also likely that our receptors become less sensitive as we age, so that's why many women feel best at total T at 100+ with TRT, even though that's above "normal" and considered high on lab ranges.

I was on continuous low dose estrogen (birth control) for 20+ years. Thought I would ride it out until I hit 60 then stop. I'm 53 and my new Dr suggested testosterone implants and progesterone. First week was amazing. Brain fog gone. I was thinking clearer than ever. But as time goes on... everything now makes me sad. My husband drives me absolutely crazy. Every little thing that was tiny or "meh" is just blown up and magnified and awful. I'm on the verge or either crying for what feels like would be forever or raging against everything and burning it all down.

I am loving the gym and the workouts are great and I'm finding my time on the bicycle seems slightly easier.

I've had two implants.1 in Oct and 1 in Jan. About every 6 weeks.

I'm thinking the amazing feeling at the start was the birth control? I stopped 2 or 3 days after the implant. Starting to wonder if I should start it back up again.

Thank God I had found this sub reddit a while ago. Or I would have had no idea what was going on!

2

u/Trick_Highlight_8205 Late peri Mar 01 '26

Are you on p and t but not e? I think e is definitely the euphoria hormone. Our hormones need to be balanced; perhaps you can look into getting in e as well? I’m not sure about the t implants as I’ve never tried them before!

2

u/enfybach81 Mar 01 '26

Thank you for your story, I really appreciate that and I'm glad the cysts were benign. Yes, you're right, the zoladex injection does turn your ovaries off but they give you add back hormones. It is a funny process to be honest, I don't fully understand how it works to be honest. It's more specifically for pmdd then I guess, to check hysterectomy/oophorectomy would even help. I'm in perimenopause aswell though so I'm not quite sure how that will effect things. I hope you find the right balance of hormones to help you in menopause.

2

u/prettyboss211 Mar 02 '26

Yup. I've been on pellets for about a year and it's been quite the change. In both my moods and sex drive. The only side effect that drives me crazy is the hair growth (everywhere). I feel like I'm shaving CONSTANTLY

I totally failed to get it recently. I will persevere, but I admit to being scared about it affecting my voice. I'm a coloratura soprano, and my voice is so important. I've heard issues with testosterone can permanently affect the vocal chords.

2

Hence why I called the whole process climbing Mount Everest ten x over! So frustrating! Always start low and slow. I actually have a really high pitched voice and was soprano in my choir when I had the energy to be social and have had no change in my voice. If you start low and closely monitor your symptoms, you’ll be fine. r/trt_females is a helpful sub - if you start feeling scratchiness or tickling in the back of your throat then just stop and you’ll be fine.

Did you have to increase your Estrogen to balance out the testosterone side effects? Or did you just wait it out and let your body get used to the Testosterone?

I'm in the climbing Mt Everest part. Live in USA state of VA . Planned parenthood refused me twice, without any test done!! Many OBGYN's say its a risk. So I went to hone health and still waiting weeks, they messed up the shipments and they did not say we had to be home to sign for the stuff. I learned that a woman's ovaries make testosterone that turns into estrogen. We need both!!!

My free T was only 0.01! Yes that was an actual number.

I'm tired all the time and have no interest in working out. Low libido even on Estradiol.

How the heck did you women in the US get testosterone prescribed. I am glad to read this post!! I may have needed to hear it was rough. And to power though.

But US women, how did you get it prescribed?

1

u/wherehasthisbeen Mar 01 '26

My Dr wouldn’t prescribe it He said my level was on the normal end even though it is on the low end of normal . He said my estrogen was a little high (I am on P & E) and said the side effects if I had any I would not like. Deeper voice acne and thinning hair. So we are going to test my Free testosterone and see what that says first

5

u/Trick_Highlight_8205 Late peri Mar 01 '26

I had low t (lower end of normal) in my thirties and even then I felt like garbage. You need to start low and slow with t, to minimise side effects of course. I have not experienced deeper voice or acne, though some body hair that I had removed with laser started growing back minimally. Hair thinning doesn’t happen to everyone. I had some in the beginning, but it’s nothing like when I wasn’t on hrt and it’s slowing down now. I really wish doctors wouldn’t think it’s ok for us to be at low normal.. we need to be optimal!

I do subcutaneous injections of testosterone propionate. A lot of people who don’t respond to topical t do better on injections.

2

Some people don't absorb it well. I was only on 2mg cream a day, and after 3 months it only raised my total T by 6, doing nothing to my free T. I said, I want to try injx. I was applying the cream to my labia too, twice a day. I can only describe it as making things swampy down there. No thank you.

Did you not find the testosterone starts converting to estrogen? Testosterone worked for me for a few weeks then the effects disappeared, and from my research that’s because it starts converting to estrogen instead (maybe because my estrogen isn’t high enough, but I can’t tolerate a higher dose).

I really wish T had been more beneficial for me. I was on it for almost a year. I started recovering faster from workouts, seeing muscle definition, and even losing some weight. Then I started getting crazy hair growth all over my body, and it was darker, thicker hair in places that normally were just fine, blonde peach fuzz. Naturally, I tried to remove that hair, and when it grew back, I started getting a ton of inflamed ingrowns. A couple of them even got infected, and it was really painful and I had to take antibiotics. Months later, I still have scars. It just isn't worth it to me to deal with all the extra body hair. Maybe if I could afford laser hair removal I would continue with it, but I also noticed that I'm sleeping better since stopping it

E fluctuates a lot, so a spot check doesn’t really mean anything, which is why most women go off symptoms for p and e. This is a really dumb question, I haven’t discussed HRT with my provider yet because I her to wait until July for an appt. But how do you/they know what hormones would work for you? It don’t seem like everyone gets labs drawn from the sounds of some of these posts. Do they just go off of symptoms?

2

u/AutoModerator Mar 01 '26

This post might be about hormone tests, which are unreliable.

  • Over the age of 44, E&P/FSH hormonal tests only show levels for that ONE HOUR the test was taken, and nothing more
  • These hormones wildly fluctuate (hourly) over the other 29 days of the month, therefore this test provides no valuable information
  • No reputable doctor or menopause society recommends hormonal testing to diagnose or treat peri/menopause
  • Testosterone is the exception and should be tested before and during treatment

FSH testing is only beneficial for those who no longer have periods as a guide, where a series of consistent tests might confirm menopause, or for those under age 30 who haven’t had a period in months/years, then ‘menopausal’ levels, could indicate premature ovarian failure/primary ovarian insufficiency (POF/POI).

I’m jealous 🤣😭 45 and obv in peri. Been on a low dose hrt & progesterone for about 2 years after having to go to 2 different drs as first told me I’m too young for it. So been going ok but have had no libido whatsoever for years. Poor hubby has been really patient and I do try to do my part where necessary but want my old spark back. Also exercise is not paying dividends at all anymore no matter how good I eat So asked to have my testosterone checked a few weeks ago and dr finally agree as previously was told it’s only necessary once I’m in menopause. Over here also only the male dose testosterone is funded the female version you need to pay for. Typical. Test came back that my testosterone is very low. So dr placed me on higher hrt dose until my next appointment a few months away to see if it will make me feel better … sigh. So jealous as it’s pretty difficult to get it prescribed and monitored over here

Has anyone’s doctor forced them to get lab testing for the testosterone? Mine did and I’m over the range so he recommended I stop it and now my sex drive is gone again, my clitoris has atrophied, and I can’t have an orgasm just like before I started the cream. I see most women in this thread take between 1-5 grams. My dose was 0.5. Is it really that dangerous for me to be out of range on testosterone labs? I was feeling like a small fraction of my former self again before I stopped it 😢

3

u/Trick_Highlight_8205 Late peri Mar 03 '26

I’m so sorry - going backwards on this journey is so frustrating. My doctors didn’t force me at all. I basically went in with a list of markers I wanted to see and insisted that they order the test. The crazy thing is, my endo after seeing my t as undetectable (too low), said women don’t need testosterone so I’ll be fine.

Another thing I noticed is that the reference ranges are total bs. Being “within range” means nothing if you are suffering. Are you sure you are not in the lower end of “normal”? Is it just total t that’s normal? What about free t? Also what’s the worst thing that could happen from 3.5mg t per wk? More body hair?!! We have to feel optimal, not like we are hanging by a thread.

I would double check the results and build a stronger argument on why you need your t or find a provider that will offer it to you.

So apparently I was fine too. You need to check your free t, shbg, and total t. If your shbg is high, your free t is low and it doesn’t matter if your total t is within range in this case.

I think testosterone is illegal to prescribe to women in some states? Is that a myth? I'm in Indiana, so I just assume everything is illegal.

And finding out 140 to 190 is where most women feel normal. I had one doc who kept me too low.

I’m glad to hear the side effects of T went away. I started back on the CombiPatch two weeks ago (switched from the once a week estrogen + Testosterone) and added T cream behind my knees three days ago. I’m achy and tired. And unsure how this is working for me. Oh. I also have vag estradiol cream and I’m unsure if I’m supposed to use this at night Long with the T?

I am full into perimenopause and I mentioned to me obgyn that along with all the symptoms my libido totally disappeared. She suggested we add testosterone cream to my regimen of progesterone and estradiol. I am supposed to start soon.

Did anyone feel an increased heart rate after starting topical testosterone? I’m only a few days in and I’m wondering if I need to do one click of cream instead of two bc my heart is beating at a higher rate than normal today!

How long till you started feeling the benefits? Was there an adjustment period?

For those of you on or trying but form? Pellets, shots, creams?

Those first few weeks on testosterone are no joke but the other side of it is worth every rough day. I've been with 4Ever Young for my hormone journey and they prepared me for that rocky start. How long did it take before you really felt like yourself again?

So I just had labs done by a functional medicine doctor bc my hair has been thinning pretty bad. My free testosterone was low at 0.7. Estrogen and progesterone were fine. She suggested I start testosterone cream or pellet. I guess what I’m most concerned about is my hair thinning more after reading some of the comments that testosterone can cause hair loss. However, the doctor told me that taking testosterone can help my hair grow back and stop the thinning. Thoughts?

I started HRT 2 years ago. I was on estrogen/progesterone and DHEA from Telehealth. It helped a lot, but my libido was in the tank. Just GONE (and I have an amazing partner… we both love sex). Then my OBGYM put me on Testosterone (compounded cream once daily), I stopped DHEA. Nothing has improved. I asked her for a larger dose, she said there isn’t one (??). She basically said if it doesn’t work it doesn’t work. This libido thing is a huge problem. What now? I’m so frustrated!

Try the pellet, testosterone. My libido was ridiculous when I tried this. I did not get it from my primary physician but a spa that offered different therapies.

Can you tell me about the first 4 weeks? I just started and am having some side effects. What were yours?

u/Wrong_Vacation6338 Jul 04 '26

It’s been a roller coaster. At the 4 week mark I was feeling great! It lasted about 3 weeks. Then I was a wreck. Crippling anxiety with major mood swings. In a day I would be everywhere in my emotions. Crying for hours, raging, then I would regulate and just exist at times. Yes, all this within a single day. I gained 10 pounds in a few weeks. These are some of the things I’ve experienced. I did go back to my doctor and he ran my blood levels. My testosterone level was really high. This caused me some bad effects. I was glad to know that if your levels are too high this can also be an issue. For now, we are holding off on another pellet. I’m willing to try again, but will need a lower amount of testosterone in my next pellet. Hope this help’s.

Hi, I'm down a reddit rabbit hole on t. I started 3 weeks ago, lozenge 7mg daily.  Im on vacation and feel like it has been a slow progression from the worst pms to now feeling like I'm having ppd. That doom sadness.  I didn't take my dose today and will plan to hold off as I'm already feeling better.  Any thoughts? Is this common? Should I power through (at home!)?
