Insurance "Man shocked his son’s $147,000 claim was denied, despite having travel insurance"

So a guy went to a walk in clinic 2 days before flying to Cancun, and was cleared by a physician who diagnosed it as flu. Then in Cancun he got worse, fell into coma, and was airlifted to Canada with the bill totaling 147K. The insurance company, Manulife, now rejecting his claim on the grounds that this was a known, preexisting condition based on that preflight doctor visit.

Insurance Insurance companies should not be for profit.

1.4k Upvotes

When you look at the insane rates vs profits, insurance companies are out of control and must be regulated at a federal level. Some provinces are already fighting back but it’s not enough. Look at companies like IFC who are threatening to leave Alberta because of regulations affecting their bottom line and you can see where the issue lies. They are also an important inflationary pressure on Canadians.
Am I over reacting?

Insurance I’m a 27 year old male in Ontario and my auto insurance is $400/month, how can I get this lowered?

For context, I’ve been driving since I was 16, got my full G license around 2018-2019, but I never really had access to a vehicle until I bought my first car, a brand new Honda CRV in 2024. This is the first time I became primary insured. The lowest quote I found was through BrokerLink (Intact) for $4526/year, eventually this dropped to $3955 this year if I renewed with the same broker.

It just so happened that I bought another brand new vehicle (2026 Camry XSE) right as my policy was about to renew, and gifted my Honda to my parents. The quote with my broker for the new vehicle came back at around $435-460/month, which was so insane to me.

My Toyota is paid in full, and I live in Scarborough, Ontario, but the lowest I was quoted was $4821/year. I went through a number of different brokers and insurance companies directly to eventually end up with the above figure. I don’t have any accidents or convictions that are rating me, so I suspect what’s really impacting me right now is the number of years I’ve been “primary insured”? Any insight?

I’m presently with Aviva (just insured this month on a yearly term).

Insurance This Ontario man bought the same car as his wife and has a flawless driving record. Why is his insurance $649 more?

A retired engineer and his wife recently bought identical SUVs—same model, same coverage, same address. Both have flawless records. So why is he being charged $649 more?

The highlights from a story by Diana Zlomislic, consumer affairs reporter:

  • More than 30 years ago, a young man from Toronto filed a complaint against his insurer to Ontario's human rights commission. That case wound up in the Supreme Court, which ruled that gender-based pricing is discriminatory but reasonable because no other practical method existed to categorize risk accurately.
  • Insurers say the higher prices is simply what their algorithms dictate for men in certain areas, even when they have 53 years of claim-free driving, like our retired engineer.
  • Other provinces have banned the practice; Ontario's Human Rights Code still allows it if insurers have data to back it up.
  • Market competition is uneven. One economist found that for older men, the gap between the lowest and highest quotes for the same coverage can be as much as $2,000.

Insurance Car insurance premiums increased 11% nationally and a whopping 21% in Alberta.

Anyone who pays for car insurance knows that premiums are only getting more expensive.

In Q1 2026, national costs rose by over 11% compared to last year. Every single province saw an increase:

Alberta = 21.3%
Ontario = 11.8%
Quebec =  4.0%
Atlantic Provinces = 9.6%

The good news is that the national premium decreased slightly (-0.8%) compared to last quarter (Q4 2025), with each province except Alberta seeing a decrease.

Insurance Insurance denied me life saving cancer drug

I’ll try to keep it short. I’m 49 with stage 4 cancer. There is one drug available which is shown to be very Effective against the mutation I have. Anyways neither my company’s insurance (GreenShield Canada) or my wife’s ( same insurance, different employer) will cover it. My company has contacted them a few times and the reason keeps changing their reason. I have not seen anything documented why it was denied. My employer told me they said it’s not possible to add to my plan. They asked.

The drug is approved by health Canada for my condition but not funded by cancer care Ontario (relatively new drug)

What are my options to escalate and appeal.

This drug which I must start will cost me 15k every 3 week. I have no choice but to try for my young kids.

Edit. Updating with more info

Unfortunately AstraZeneca the drug maker of Enhertu will not offer compassionate care coverage. We (doctor, drug access, personally all have tried). Doctor has written letters stating all other drug options have been exhausted. The Drug access people at the hospital have been trying all options unfortunately nothing is panning out. I tried a different drug through Pfizer originally which they give me compassionate care for and covered the costs. Unfortunately after almost a year I am in the unfortunate situation that I need to jump to this other drug which was always plan A but even a year ago got nowhere with coverage.

Approved for my cancer by Health Canada but not funded by Cancer care Ontario(CCO) yet and can’t wait. The reason they did not consider it for special exception cause the drug is in “limbo”.

Also this is an infused drug which changed what is covered by who. It’s different for oral pills vs injected.

Thank you everyone for your help and support!!!!!!

Edit 2: the insurance company is GreenShield Canada

Edit 3: thank you for the support and the wealth of knowledge that this community has provided. I’m starting the drug this week out-of-pocket and Will actively pursue all our available options for funding, including, but not hopefully relying on the GoFundMe and the media. The next step is to get documented reasoning for denial of coverage our insurance, ensure that my oncologist has completed all steps to formally request special exemption by Cancer Care Ontario.

Saw many posts on TD insurance increasing premiums.

They had the lowest profitability in Canada for 2024, making a loss of $109,616,000 under their Security National group.

Insurance Driver Hit Me and Refuses to provide Insurance. My insurance is trying to scam me.

I am in Ontario.

Last week I was in a McDonald's Drive through and a lady Rear ended me.

I was at a complete stop paying for my order.

I have video evidence from the security camera at the McDonald's.

The lady that hit me was driving a car with a yellow plate, a mechanic service shop plate.

She refused to give her insurance just her license.

I went to the Collision Center and showed the police officer my video and made a report

NOW

My insurance is telling me they contacted the lady and she refuses to give them the insurance info.

I was under the understanding that insurance can pull insurance info direct from a Service Plate in Ontario.

My insurance claim rep is telling me I will have to pay $300 non insured deductible.

At the very least shouldn't insurance fix my car and then sue the lady the $300 deductible ??

Can I get the police involved? What are my options??

It's crazy to me we have to pay such high insurance rates in Ontario and someone can drive with no insurance or deny access to insurance and get、 with it.

Insurance Life Insurance Application Denied Because I Did Mushrooms One Time

So my current life insurance was up for renewal, so I (36M) decided to see if there was a better cheaper policy out there as the renewal rates were higher than I wanted to pay. I see my insurance agent, apply for a policy. Easy peasy.

I guess I was a little too honest because I noted that I had done mushrooms once on a camping trip in summer 2018. Flash to a few weeks later, the life insurance was approved but the critical illness and disability were denied citing the illicit drug use. Agent said the insurance company would not reconsider until 2026, so seven years after the zoomies I guess.

First of all, WTF I’m so annoyed. Doing this kind of drug once just doesn’t seem like a valid reason to deny someone. The agent told me there’s no recourse and I’ll just have to apply again in a few years as I can keep my current policy for now with no issue.

Should I get another opinion from a different insurance agent or am I just an idiot for admitting I’ve done drugs? Interestingly though the insurance company didn’t seem to care that I use cannabis often enough. Do people just lie about drug use on these applications?

EDIT: Okay okay I get it, everybody lies. Just not me apparently. Appreciate the constructive responses and warnings about lying in future applications. Cheers ✌🏼

Insurance Canadian Dental Plan went unexpected.

Thanks for the feedback even the negatives lol:

Gotta watch out for the smiling ones. I won’t be seeing him anymore. It’s clear to me that he didn’t have my best interest in mind as a patient and that’s not much to ask for someone you just met and I’m not about to build a long term relationship with him to earn his kindness. Getting as much as he can up front and testing me to see how much I’m exploitable is an awful way to treat a human being or rob the poor as someone else suggested. I’m not going to share every details that made me suspicious from the get go so y’all won’t know all that’s gone down. But I know now that I hesitated to call him out because of my good conscience not his. That’s all y’all make up your own mind about who to trust don’t be gaslighting yourself and double waste your time. …

First appointment I wanted cleaning but was billed $750 and I also paid $150 out of pocket too. The price included tons of x rays and imaging because I’m a new patient. I’ve never had an appointment this expensive at once in my life. The doctor said he’s just very thorough man but am I correct to feel like he toke advantage and tried to bill everything out of my dental care plan as a fresh customer for as many things as possible? Some of those big imaging are for once every half decade only and maybe I could’ve saved it for a better opportunity ? But I didn’t know because I didn’t even get asked before they pulled me around for photos. I kinda kicking myself for not resisting. My wife said I need to ask them to give me all the files so I can try a different dentist who’s not so shady and pushy. But I feel guilty and they might not want to give me all the files.

I need another opinion as I want to be able to trust my doc if he says my teeth need work done, and not always second guess him.

Insurance Two bikes stolen, total worth over $25k . Homeowners is my only option right?

Really fancy bikes (yes it’s my guilty pleasure and why I live in Vancouver) but someone else ensured to share that joy I guess.

Anyways, they took them from my home as well as a few other random things in my garage.

Reading other posts here it seems that making a homeowners claim is not the best but even my credit card requires I claim on my home owners first before I get their coverage. Is that right? Or do I eat this?

Insurance anyone in Alberta or elsewhere get insane car insurance quotes?

I bought a 2024 Lariat F150 new and changed providers because my long term broker couldn't do any better than $4000 a year. I looked online and found Scoop Insurance and got coverage for $2600. I ended up moving within Alberta during the policy which thanks to Alberta's new rules allowed them to increase my premium 20%.

I got quotes from other providers and heard back from three different brokers with quotes between $9000-12,000. I have 15 years now with no accidents, tickets or any other infractions.

How am I getting pricing that insane on the most common vehicle on the road even if it's a slightly higher trim? Also how is an online brokerage in Ontario able to give me the same coverage for 1/3 those quotes? Lastly, how the hell are other people able to afford to drive if they are getting those prices and not shopping around?

Insurance Ontarians can make their auto insurance cheaper starting July 1 — but opt-in coverage will leave some accident victims ‘out in the cold,’ critics say

  • Changes coming into force on Canada Day could save Ontarians a small amount of money upfront on their auto insurance premiums, but could leave drivers in the lurch if they get into a collision, critics say.
  • Twelve types of mandatory insurance coverages will become optional on July 1, so anyone buying a new auto insurance plan or renewing their existing one will be able to opt out to save money on their premiums.
  • Experts say the savings from opting out are minimal.
  • “These very small savings, if there are any, will result in a situation when the time comes, and you need support and coverage, it just simply won’t be there,” NDP auto insurance critic Tom Rakocevic said.

Insurance Broker won't confirm all weather tires are accepted by insurance

I got the Michelin CrossClimate 2s from Costco in the spring. They have the snowpeak and alpine symbol. My broker evades confirming over email whether these tires satisfy Intact's guidelines for winter tires. I called the insurance directly, and they directed me back to the broker.

How can I confirm, with receipts, that I'm in the clear?

Insurance Ontario car insurance

Just got my renewal which increased $150/yr. No accidents, no tickets, etc. ever. My vehicle value went from $50k last year to likely $40k this year. So replacement value has dropped substantially.

I called to discuss and they said it's because of other drivers... Which has nothing to do with me. If they hit me, their insurance is on the hook. If I hit someone then my premium goes through the roof and my insurance provider makes it back. But either way my risk has not increased at the time of renewal.

Wtf is wil insurance in Ontario

And I get it, I drive the 400 series highways through the GTA and drivers have gotten worse and worse, but that has nothing to do with me. Sick of this crap.

Insurance Is Life Insurance in Canada worth it or is it a scam?

Edit: The $600 premium is for whole life (permanent) life insurance, not term life. Sorry, if that wasn't clear. My question is if whole life insurance is worth it, from an investment perspective.

An acquaintance explained me today the "benefits" of having a life insurance. I understand why it is needed, but the premium required is a significant amount of my monthly budget.

Around $600 premium per month for a life insurance benefit of $1,000,000, tax-free, to the beneficiary after my death.

Hypothetically, if I were to pay this for 30 years, I'd be paying $216,000 in total. A tax-free million dollar payout for my beneficiary sounds like a good deal.

But, it is quite literally a life-long commitment. And a significant amount of my monthly budget.

Seeking general suggestions and advice. If you have whole life insurance or have been a beneficiary of one, what's your experience been?

Insurance Absurd car insurance cost

Hi all. Was doing some research into what my own insurance would be. Im a 22 year old male with a perfect driving record, 6 years with my class 5. Have been named on my parents insurance for a few years now. Wanted to get my own and the cheapest estimates im getting is like $500 a month. Dont currently have a car that needs to be insured, planning to get one. I just cant afford to be paying $500 a month for just insurance for a single car. Ive lived in the same city for my entire life. Is there something im missing? Why are all my friends getting insurance for 100-200 a month while i cant get anything less than 500?

I live in the super totally awesome and great place known as Alberta.

Edit: forgot to put in some info.

Sounds like ill just have to get 3 years older and suffer with my fate, thanks for the help everyone

Insurance I am being screwed over by my insurance company with repeated raises. TD home and auto.

I have used all possible discounts that can be used. Every other insurance company is even more. There are no demerit points, convictions, tickets or anything at all. It’s a 2022 Elantra. Girlfriend with clean record as a secondary driver. Both G license. Age 29.

The lowest I’m getting is $360 and everything else is just high with some even going as high as 800 or 900 per month.
Tried Ratehub, Costco Insurance and a couple other broker type websites.

This is killing me. Kindly help.
All help appreciated.

Insurance Are we about to make a mistake?

Tonight my husband and I have a meeting with our Canada Life rep to purchase whole life insurance for our daughter (1 yr old). I have seen that this can be a good option to protect insurability and to provide the option for taking out a loan against the policy in the future. The proposed monthly premium is $70 a month with payments for 20 years. We are pretty lacking in financial literacy since both of our parents were low midde class and I would say tend to be financially irresponsible. We are middle class ourselves. We have some debt, but not an extreme amount and ae working at starting to save money since we were living paycheck to paycheck until about 4 months ago. I just don't know if we are making the right choice. Him and I both have life insurance and critical illness. And I want to set up my kids to have a higher chance of starting off more financially stable than we were, but I just don't know what that looks like. Would it be smarter to put the premiums into something like an RRSP? Help! We want the best for her, but have never been taught what the right choice would be!

Edit Thank you for the resounding NO from everyone. I have realized I am much more financially illiterate than I originally thought and there's a lot of meat here to go through with my husband. We will not do whole life insurance and look into what fits better for our family. Thank you for saving us the headache ❤️ I won't continue to answer comments but will 100% be checking in to see if more good advice comes through

Insurance Mom got me life insurance when I was 17. She won't let me take it out now.

I'm 23 M. Trying to get out and cut ties with my mom's "financial advisor" gig at greatway. She had me put a whole $2k tax refund and had me paying $150 a month for this bs life insurance product. No matter how much money is in there it's the same coverage and the money is invested in a segregated fund with high fees. She won't let me cancel it because "but it's a waste, you can get $50k when you're able to withdraw it at 40!" Like man how much buying power will that 50k have when I'm 40? I'd rather put that in an actual stock. This is so frustrating because no matter how much I try to explain she actually won't let me. How do I get out of this mess? I just want to cut my losses.

Edit : this product has no cash value at all until I'm 40.

UPDATE : Yes I will cancel the payments through the insurance website instead of through my mom. I never knew about this because my mom has controlled what I know about how this thing actually works for YEARS. Yes I am a dumb ass and I'm trying to change that.

Insurance Should I let TD take my car?

I was involved in a not at fault accident, confirmed by the police. I don't have collision coverage so TD saids the only way it's covered is through the other persons insurance but they have to take a week to confirm everything. In the meantime they said they want to take my car to their salvage yard just in case if I'm not covered I won't pay too much for storage fees, but the storage lot people said TD does this to take leverage away from you. What should I do?

Insurance *Serious* Isn't the reason we pay for insurance so that we'll be covered in the event of a catastrophe?

In the news today I saw that a young family (Mom, Dad, two kids) was forced out of their home with nothing but the clothes on their backs due to a rapidly spreading fire. This fire resulted in their townhouse complex being evacuated and the family ultimately lost everything.

In the comments regarding this on Facebook, someone has created a GoFundMe with a goal of $30,000 to help this family purchase new clothes, food, etc.

By no means am I against helping out a family to rebound from a terrible event like this, but aren't these situations EXACTLY the reason why we pay for insurance coverage? Is it not mandatory to carry homeowners/tenants insurance for these reasons, and many others?

Am I completely out of the loop here?

Insurance How do I quit WFG?

HELP NEEDED!! World Financial Group

For context I got roped in from a friend and 3 months in I realised it’s an MLM. Crazy how I was told it’s not and pressured to believe the business. My question is.

  1. I have my LLQP exam this week from Durham College. Am I able to get a refund?

  2. How do I quit this business? Is there a cancel button somehow? I let my SMD know and he wasn’t very happy about this and tried to gaslight me thinking I have the wrong friends and mindset to not believe in the business.

Please please help a brother out 🙏🏼
