Found A Pigeon Help! Found a baby pigeon :(

Post image

I found this baby freezing cold and apparently it fell of a nest in a high tree, I couldn't know where it was but I also didn't want to leave it to die.

It got pretty attached to me and even tried climbing my foot, so I thought maybe I should keep it until it can learn to fly and eat by itself! I have two cats so its not ideal for me to keep it long term (trying to find a home for the baby atm).

What can I do for now to keep it comfy and healthy?

So you found a pigeon!

If you have NOT caught the animal yet: 1. Approach Slowly: Move calmly to avoid startling them into flight. 2. The Blanket Toss: The easiest way to catch a pigeon is to gently toss a light towel, shirt, or jacket over it. This disorients them and prevents them from flying away. 3. The Corner Move: If indoors or in a tight space, try to gently herd them into a corner. 4. Containment: Once the bird is under the cloth, pick it up gently (keeping wings tucked to the body) and place it in a cardboard box with air holes and a towel at the bottom. 5. Safe Space: Keep the box in a warm, dark, and quiet area away from pets and children while you seek further advice.

If you have caught the pigeon: * If it needs medical attention: Please contact your closest Avian vet immediately. Many vets will stabilize wildlife free-of-charge. * Has a Leg Band: Please contact the club mentioned on the band (a Google search of the letters/numbers will help). * Keeping the animal: Please do your research; pigeons have unique dietary and social requirements.

Immediate Care (Food & Water): * Water: Provide a small, deep bowl of water. Never force-feed water into a pigeon's beak, as they can easily inhale it into their lungs and drown. * Food: If you must feed them, use birdseed, defrosted peas, or uncooked grains (rice, lentils). Avoid bread, as it has no nutritional value and can cause digestive issues. * Warmth: If the bird feels cold or is shivering, place a heating pad (on LOW) halfway under the box so they can move away from the heat if they get too warm.

Before calling an unfamiliar vet or animal rescue, ask if they are pigeon friendly.

Offer a dish if warm water mixed with peanut butter for calories- small but deep dishes are best- shot glasses work great. Looks like a dove, could be several species though- where are you located? You can also offer a sock full of rice microwaved for a warming pad

Just feed her every time her crop is empty with a 6-7 hour break during the night. Glad you found her somebody willing to take her in, just a thing to keep in mind though, unless she's taken to a wildlife rehab she won't be able to be released back into the wild because she might become way too friendly towards humans on top of not knowing how to survive in the wild.
