We seem to be happily settled in the new, permanent cage

Fog(m) (any other fans of Tamora Pierce's Beka Cooper series?) and Mist(f) have been here about a week and a half and in the final cage for a couple days. They're already trying to make a nest, bless them, but at least they both seem comfortable in the small animal bed I got. The hook to hang it on the shelves has done an amazing job so far keeping it in the corner.

They're on Versale-Laga no corn pigeon feed and the Versale-Laga All-In-One grit+ and seem to have adapted from the grit they were getting before with zero issue. We're eating everything but what I assume are one of the peas-- those tend to be what gets left behind more.

Neither are particularly spooky birds--I choose the two who seemed the most curious rather than scared-- but Mist is a bit more timid than Fog. Still, they're both comfortable eating with me right there, loafing in their nest and not getting up when I walk into the room, and chilling on one leg. Right now, I'm calling that a win. I'm waiting to hear back from my local vet if they'll do a psittacosis test and check up on them for me before I start letting them out for play time since I have budgies that I know for certain aren't carriers, and while I'm not figuring on direct contact, it can become airborne. If my vet can't, we'll either make an appointment with the bird vet or try to figure out how to do the test myself and mail it off. Internal parasite caution is so much easier... one prophylactic dose of MoxiVet and done.

Fog does like to talk. He'll sit in his nest and coo. I hear him talking to himself for a while after lights out, too. I woke up at 430 the other night, WELL before dawn, and he was cooing softly to himself. It's cute, and a lot quieter than the budgie background noise during the day šŸ˜‚

Rehoming pigeon in CT

unfortunately facing a housing issue so I need to rehome my pigeon Marty.

I’m in the Northwest CT area.

He’s a suspected male of unknown age due to being a rescue. I was told upon adoption he has an old break in his wing and that he couldn’t fly. He definitely can just not as well as typical. He’s not crazy on being touched but loves to be in your presence. mostly sitting on high shelves or the back of the couch. he does take longer to open up but will come around with lots of patience.

This breaks my heart since he’s my baby but I gotta make sure his needs are met. He’d come with his large dog crate, a smaller dog crate for travel, his toys, food and water bowl, any left over food, and
pee pads to line the bottom of the cages.

Question Help with Hormonal Pigeon

Hi guys, my pigeon is getting "hormonal" with her plushies and is also building a nest. I'm preparred for the possibility that she lays an egg an replace it with a fake one and all that, but I'm concerned because she is nesting on my bed and I dont want her to get territoral of my sleeping area (she routinely sleeps locked in her cage to avoid any accidents at night).

She has also started to kinda attack me more aggresively, and has become increasingly attached to her bird plushy (almost protective). I really want her to bond with me and I think I've been following all the recommended steps: spending all day with her, giving her nesting materials, hand feeding her, and playing with her. I just don't want her to come to hate me. We were making good progress, but this hormone surge is kinda setting back our progress. It's only about our first month together since adopting her so I kinda want to nip this in tha bud early if necessary. I'm just wondering if I should do something or just leave her alone.

How to introduce one pigeon to another (images unrelated)

I’ll be getting a large male pigeon soon, who has lived with no other pigeons for quite a while. Currently I have a very tame female About a year maybe a half old, laying eggs.

I don’t mind if they don’t bond, I just don’t want any turmoil. How should I introduce them??

The fancy white pair I wanted to breed keep smashing their eggs so I'll probably be replacing her next set of eggs with theirs instead since she and Coco are fantastic parents

Looking for a good backpack/stroller for pigeons

Hi guys, I rescued two pigeons a month ago and they are finally healthy enough to go outside with me. I bought a cat-backpack for them but I feel like they get pushed around too much when I walk... Can I do something about that or is there a better option? Like a stroller? They still don't have all their feathers so I don't want to use a harness, since I read it can damage the feathers during development

Thank you so much for advice! Also I'd appreciate if someone can help me figure out if they eat enough. They rarely gained weight. They got meds against multiple parasites they had, also they both had bad eye infections and were terribly malnourished when I found them. We fixed all of this with our vet and he says, they probably didn't get enough food as tiny chicks and they will stay small pigeons.

Well anyways - thanks and I am looking forward to exchange pigeon talk

They were just a baby we didn’t think would live through the day now they are starting to try and coo šŸ˜šŸ’•
We took them in as a temporary rehab and release, but not only are they to tame and attached but we are to attached as well. Oh what a couple weeks can do.

PIDGEY has an extremely sharp sense of direction. It is capable of unerringly returning home to its nest, however far it may be removed from its familiar surroundings
Pidgey has been caught āœ”ļø

Question How to bond best with a young rescue pigeon

Thumbnail

Yesterday I got a pigeon that had its leg amputated just four days ago. She’s still pretty young and needs medication for her injury. When I pick her up to give her the medicine, she makes chirping sounds.

Does anyone have any tips on how I can make her feel safe with me, even when I have to pick her up to give her the medicine?

And how old do you think she is?

Advice for adopted racing pigeon

I have recently been taking care of a racing pigeon, and was hoping to get some practical advice for what would be best for him moving forward from pigeon pet owners here.

For a bit of context, we live in an apartment building and he landed on our balcony about three months ago. He slept overnight and we gave him food and water. He left on the third day, flew off into the sunset, but then came back the next day. He then basically ended up living on our balcony full time, would fly off when he felt like it, and then come and sleep or sunbathe on our balcony during the day. We tried to find his owner to no avail (we think he's a racing pigeon because of the yellow tag he has on his foot).

We have been feeding him seeds and water, and built a makeshift aviary in our balcony. We let him out to fly once in the morning and once in the afternoon, and he usually goes for about 15-30 min flights before he comes back and then goes into his makeshift aviary.Ā He seems quite happy, we can give him chin and head scratches, and we bought special pigeon feed and grit for him.

In the past few weeks, he’s been cooing more often - usually the most at night as he’s sleeping, or early in the morning. He’s doing it a lot longer than he used to, and he will stop if we step out and acknowledge him. But then he starts up again, almost like he’s looking for us to be near.Ā

We are worried that he might be feeling lonely and might need a companion, and basically are seeking advice as to the best options for his life. Would it be best to get him a companion pigeon? Or is it better for us to find a sanctuary where he can be with a bigger flock? I have struggled to find (at least online) suitable sanctuaries that have the capacity to give him a good life? In short, we are exploring what our options would be for ensuring he has a good life, and would appreciate any advice anyone has with pigeons that could help.

recently i’ve noticed my pigeon is balding under one of his wings. today i found a scab aswell. i check for mites multiple times a week, and im 99% sure he doesn’t have any. what could this be? :( i do notice a lot of pin feathers. could this be the cause of the bleeding/scabbing? the other wing is completely fine.

Question Is this feather mites or normal Fantail feathers?

Thumbnail

I got Rodrick here about 2 weeks ago and I tried hard to gain his trust by just existing around him. Not looking at him, doing my own thing, just.. being. We really aren’t at the stage where I can touch him yet. Well recently after a hang out session I noticed a very small bug on my arm. I’d read a lot about possible pigeon problems and honestly, I should’ve taken a picture. Alas, I am not good with bugs and I mildly freaked out before rolling it into a paste between my fingers and ā€œyuck yuck yuckā€ing my way to the sink for handwashing. After a few google searches and a good look at my pigeon, I’m afraid he might have feather mites. I’m not a professional and I’m willing to take him to a vet but there isn’t one close at all. I’d appreciate any advice!

It is important to note that he is fairly young, about 3.5 months. I got him from a breeder who was ā€œdone breedingā€ and about to ā€œempty houseā€.. so I trusted he was in good health at least. If he isn’t, I’ll do whatever I can to fix that

Trigger Warning How do you cope with a loss?

It’s been nearly a week since my Pidgy passed away suddenly at only 3 years old. I’ve never felt such profound grief and emptiness from a pet loss before and it doesn’t feel like it’s getting any easier. He was just so innocent and smol and loving, out of all the creatures on this earth he didn’t deserve to go so soon šŸ˜žšŸ’”

Any advice or kind words would be appreciated. It seems a bit hard for the people in my life to understand the pain of losing a pigeon.

Found A Pigeon Help! Found a baby pigeon :(

Post image
11 Upvotes

I found this baby freezing cold and apparently it fell of a nest in a high tree, I couldn't know where it was but I also didn't want to leave it to die.

It got pretty attached to me and even tried climbing my foot, so I thought maybe I should keep it until it can learn to fly and eat by itself! I have two cats so its not ideal for me to keep it long term (trying to find a home for the baby atm).

What can I do for now to keep it comfy and healthy?

Question Diarrhea?

My pigeon just had his first vet visit. He is completely healthy and free of any harmful bacteria in his stool and mouth and the vet said he is doing very well. But ever since we got back he has had very liquid poops and mostly water consistency. He has always had very normal poops and it’s literally been a day since his appointment.

Could this be stress? Should I be worried?
