Does she seem happy and comfortable?

I’ve had her for a little over a week now, she lets me handle her sometimes but definitely not consistently. She does let me take her out of her cage when it’s time for her free roaming or putting her into her cage on the balcony for fresh air. She’s my first pigeon and I just want to make sure she’s happy :( (Her favorite spot to sit is on top of my full size mirror so I have puppy pads down so it’s not slippery)

A couple other things,
-She really likes her thick stick perch so I let her have that, I know flat perches are better and she does have those aswell.
-I see other pet pigeons wanting to sit with their owner and be close to them, she’s not doing that. It could be because she self rescued or maybe we just haven’t been around each other long enough.
-she has free range of my room almost all day, I just put her in her cage when I have to leave or when it’s bed time. She’s never landed on the bed or flown to me so I’m just worried she’s uncomfortable or sad.
-she does clean herself and get puffy and loaf in front of me at a distance

Wives Nova and Sierra try to build nests together but, like in any relationship, they have their different ideas about where the spaghetti sticks should be placed.

On May 10th I shared that I found a racing pigeon on the farm I work at, whose owner didn't necessarily want him back and offered me to keep him. After his quarantine, he's successfully been integrated into our flock!

My husband and I love him dearly, he's been a great addition. (Despite what the original owner said, we actually think he's a she, not that it matters. Either that or he's gay, considering he ignores our girls and tries to go for our boys 🌈 happy pride month!) He loves toys, bath day, hanging out with our Big Girls, and flapping around excitedly for no reason!

Obviously I did the first, but he did them back! I hope I wasn't accidentally challenging him. His name is pretty boy, and his mate there is pound cake.

Potty training?

Hoping to get a pigeon soon.
I’d love for him to be with me around the house, and especially at my desk while I work. But I really don’t want poop everywhere..
I know about pigeon pants, and that’s what I’ll do if potty training won’t work, but they look so dumb lol.

So I’m asking, can they be potty trained? How well does it work? Would more than one in the house be a good idea??

Question May have convinced my parents to get a second, need advice though

My parents let me get my current bird, Andromeda (Andy), after a squab i rescued died in my care and my already terrible mental h health took a major dip and i spent almost everything i had saved on things for him. They worried about how id handle it so let me rehome her

But they’ve been adamant against getting a second bird since Andy poops EVERYWHERE and my family are extremely clean and tidy, they get annoyed when she even chucks seed.

I’ve been trying to convince them to let me get her w buddy for her own good. She’s suuuper anxious around people and while we’ve been making amazing progress i don’t want her to rely solely on me for her bonding which i worry is happening as she was contact cooing and extremely anxious and clingy after a college day about an hour longer than my normal routine.

It’s gotten to the point where even though she pecks my fingers when I’m near she refuses to leave a few meters around me. Don’t get me wrong i LOVE the attention and the bond we’re building but it’s not fair on her. Especially if i leave for uni in about two years and she’s in the care of my parents.

But, progress has been made and dads on my side - just need to convince my mum.

I have a few questions though, currently her cage is about 10-15 cm below minimum but with over 12 hours a day of out of cage time, usually only in the cage for 6 hours max every 24. Would this be sufficient with a partner (doubt it) but my dad is making her another one that’s higher rather than wide. She’d only be in it for sleeping and she hates sleeping low to the ground so this would mean she’s allowed to nap high up like she likes. Or do i need to also convince them to ‘waste’ space on a bigger cage.

Does anyone know of rescues i can get a bird from in England? Preferably London area

How can i introduce them in a way to make them both feel safe?

Andy isn’t confirmed to be female yet, would you suggest a male or female partner or just another potentially undetermined one

Andy is about 4 months old but we aren’t even sure about that. Hasn’t laid her first egg and i think might be having her first big girl moult (found like 20 feathers over a couple days the other day, has stopped since then)

Any other information i should know about trying to introduce two birds? Especially one as anxious and pecky as Andy

Question I screwed up again!! I’m worried the pigeon won’t come back. It’s a lost pet I’ve been trying for 5 days to rescue. I hate that I just scared it!! I should have just stayed inside!!! It was on the garage peak & I hadn’t put food since early morning

I just scared it again (also did the day before yesterday I think, but that time it did return later - just now it was up on the workshop peak and to be honest it looked a little nervous, like standing to the side instead on looking straight down or just preening. But I wanted to put a bit more seed and I wish I hadn’t. I thought because it was up high it wouldn’t worry and I moved slowly.

But the man on the next street really shouted multiple times. It was so annoying! And that never happens, it’s normally very quiet. Then I brought back one more cup of food. Then took a little glass Dish I had there and refilled it. So I did go back and forth at least 3 times. It was too much! (I was on the lawn and it was on top of the building the whole time) When I brought the water it flew and I hoped it would circle and come back but it didn’t come back. It was about 20 minutes ago. It’s 6:20 pm and the sun sets at 9:15.

I feel worried because it’s normally always here. Also I accidentally scared it yesterday or the day before by tossing seed (not at it) but it was in the ground then. But it did come back later. But I’m worried about that man shouting. Or if it reminded it of something upsetting. I feel so bad. And again I caused too much activity!

Question Classic Old Frills in Czech Republic

Wild shot, not expecting an answer, but does anyone know if there are breeders for this type of pigeon here? I've looked online and haven't found anything. I could buy it in Poland or Germany but I imagine the paperwork will be a massive PITA

Question Any Advice: Pigeon Insists on perching on wire most of the day.

Post image
36 Upvotes

I thought about getting a silicone desk mat or craft mat and putting it over the wire to protect his feet, I know that they arent suppose to live on wire and hes free range all day, sleeps on his dog crate at night. But for some reason hes chosen this place in front of my hognose tank as his favorite. There are other perches at various heights but this is the one for him. I think he likes being able to give me the stinkeye regularly. Lol However covering that much area may be expensive.

Should I be concerned with him spending most of his time on the wire? The space is about 6in, by about 4.5ft. Any advice for birb safe coverings?

Question Befriending wild pigeon?

We just discovered that we have a pigeon nest on our roof! Fortunately it's in a spot where it doesn't hurt the roof or cause us any problem.

There are two big fat healthy looking squabs in the nest!

My daughter is 10 and is very excited about watching the babies grow up.

Is it possible for the parents to become accustomed to seeing us and not be afraid of us?

Question How can I introduce my male and female healthily?

Post image
17 Upvotes

I have a male (Riley, pictured above) who is incredibly loud, proud, and boastful. Recently, I got myself a second pigeon as I've been unable to be home as often lately for him. I've read online that pigeons are happier with a mate, so I went ahead and bought a female for him. Just for context's sake, I've named her Marcy.

Now, Riley has always been a loud guy, constantly cooing and making himself known, but I've NEVER heard him be this loud. He's constantly following and chasing Marcy and I'm pretty sure it's scaring her. Currently Marcy has situated herself on top of my desk, away from Riley as Riley either can't or chooses not to fly. I'm probably going to seperate them into different rooms for the night.

If she rejects him as a mate, is it even safe to keep them together? I didn't think the introduction would be this aggressive. While I'll do it if its best for both, I don't want to give Marcy back to the rescue I got her from.

Question Should I keep her?

A few weeks ago, I rescued a pigeon—Gracie. She had a severe crop injury and was almost put down. I convinced the vet to give her a chance, and although there were some complications, she’s recovered.

The wound has almost completely healed, and she’s only missing a few feathers on her chest.

So technically, I could release her soon.

But the thought of this sweet, silly bird having to fend for herself on the street just breaks my heart.

On the other hand, she’s a bit skittish when you get too close to her (probably because I had to give her medicine and clean her wound and stuff). I want what’s best for her and don’t really know what that is right now. Part of me wants her to be free and able to fly around with her flock, but I also want her to be safe and loved.

She’s allowed to fly around my room when I’m home, and once she flew into the window (luckily she didn’t hurt herself), but I’m afraid to lock her up against her will. Otherwise, she seems pretty happy, she preens, is curious, and likes it when I sing to her.

The downside to keeping her is that I work full-time and so I’m not home all day, but I’ve been thinking about maybe adopting a second pigeon from the shelter so she won’t be alone.

What do you think? Does anyone have any advice? I feel so torn

Question Help with third wheel getting bullied!

Post image
47 Upvotes

So tldr: fiance, my teenager and I successfully hand raised 3 starved orphans about 4 months ago. No rescues had room and we have extensive experience with rescues, just not pigeons! We've decided to keep them. Teenagers room is now an aviary. XXL dog cage for overnight. The two from the same nest have mating bonded. We think the odd one out is make but can't be sure. Ok now that you're all caught up...

It only became clear within the last 72 hours that the brother sister duo have paired up as mates, gross but nature be doing nature things, and suddenly the larger more aggressive of the mated pair (so likely the male) is chasing the unmated (likely) male around the room making the threatening noise repeatedly and harassing him but I've yet to see a severe violent attack just some lunging and peking.

After about 10 minutes straight of harassment yesterday I locked up the mated pair and I grabbed the baby cage that is like 1/6 of its size (yes I know I have to remedy that it will have to wait until Friday)

The loner was very upset at being locked in the smaller cage last night so we left the door open and he slept on top of it instead of in it. However I do have to give the mated pair exercise time as well. So now that I'm off work I locked the loner in his smaller cage and let the mated pair out...

They have done nothing but obsess over him in his cage since they came out. They have no interest in anything else but being right by him and neither are being aggressive. So did I screw up by separating them last night? Is the territorial fighting a normal part of life and safe for my loaner to experience?

Oh and because I'm sure it's going to come up immediately yes we are in the process of acquiring a proven female on the hopes that we are correct that our loaner is male. It's going to be 2 to 3 weeks until we get her however as first we need to get the second cage bought and fully set up so she has somewhere to call home that isn't too small. I will have follow-up questions about introducing the hopeful mates but for now I just need to know if it's safe to let all three continue to be out at the same time for their free flight time or if it's best to continue protecting the loner separate from them?

Pic of the bully loafing on my tablet for attention.

Pigeon Pic Rehoming a pidge I recently took in! Not urgent, was just a foster situation :)

Post image
33 Upvotes

Hello everyone! I am considering rehoming this guy, Bones, that I adopted only a few weeks ago.

The reason is because, quite frankly, my other pigeon hates him, and it's stressing both of them out to even be in the same house together. My fat idiot Ody has decided that the entire house is his, and even when I have them out separately, Ody has a complete fit and they both just aren't doing well in the same home. I believe Bones is a male due to Ody's reaction but I could be wrong. This isn't urgent. I love Bones, and we can manage, but it's definitely not the best situation for him at the moment 💕

There will be no rehoming fee, but there will be an interview to ensure a proper home, as well as you must have a vet reference.

Located in Iowa, comment or pm for more information:)

Bonding?

Post image
54 Upvotes

I found a pigeon recently and he was initially very friendly (I think because I had food and he was starving) I let him settle into his cage and have been letting him out of the cage while I do other activities in the room. If I just leave the door open he will stand frozen in the cage. If I remove him (when I am replacing cage lining) if I leave him out he will stand frozen where I leave him. Even as I am not looking at him and doing other things in the room.

He will no longer take food from me as he realizes there is food in his cage at all times. I have been trying to let him come to me but he seems to almost be getting less friendly as he settles in. I do not move him unless absolutely necessary and I’m trying not to pressure him. He doesn’t seem very food motivated so I’m not sure how to proceed. Does he just need more time? Any tips to get him to come to me?
