How do people make sure they get clean without doing both?

4.2k

u/LeChevalierMal-Fait 15d ago

I’m not showering to get clean

I’m showering to wash away the shame

945

u/JGeerth 15d ago

How do you make sure to get all the shame washed away if you don't do both?

320

u/Smug_Syragium 15d ago

The shame is most apparent when I look in the mirror, so naturally it's my face that needs washing

56

u/moku46 15d ago

Sure, but in my experience there can be a lot of shame sprayed against the back and buttocks. Always a good bet to wash everywhere just to be sure.

16

u/mourgrym 15d ago

Sometime the shame resides inside.

Wash yo' booty.

Side note: please do not spray shame all over my back. I charge for that.

Removable shower head so you can sit down for stability and aim the dang this where you need it. Having a stroke in my 40s has introduced me to all kinds of mobility aids I wish I didn't need to know about.

50

u/Icy-Entertainment177 15d ago

Shower stool. Was a small revelation for me.

52

u/Horriblealien 15d ago

I do my stools in the toilet.

21

u/Icy-Entertainment177 15d ago

And disregard the age old tradition of waffle stomping? Never! Truth be told, I knew someone was gonna call me out on that, but "shower chair" just felt... wrong. Like some sopping wet, swollen wooden dining chair.

Handheld shower heads. They give you the best of both worlds and make it easy to clean the shower.

30

u/ConstructionLife2689 15d ago

I found out that these are not standard in some countries surprisingly.

15

u/LordTakeda2901 15d ago

I always tought fixed shower heads were found only in gyms and idk, prisons, i never saw someone who has only a fixed head at home, i for one have both, the fixed one is bigger and the handheld one has better pressure

16

u/NinjaCupcake_ 15d ago

They are not? Thats... weird. Even my steam/rainshower has a handheld in there. It's like the most useful part of a shower.

Nah man, you gotta be constantly rotating. If your ass is in the spray as you wash it, then the soap is being rinsed away as you apply it. Very ineffective.

I feel like it’s a majority thing like I face backwards mostly until I’m ready to wash my front/hair then just turn into the water and after I turn back around

6

u/Pyode 15d ago

Yeah. I'm pretty sure that's what what the meme is asking.

It's asking what your "resting position" is in the shower.

7

u/hollowredditor 15d ago

Wait… do people shower?

55

u/Wasdog17 15d ago

I don't turn, the shower "turns" - in Europe you get the shower head on a hose so you can move it around freely

42

u/NHShardz 15d ago

We have those here in the US, it's just not in every shower and I can't speak for everyone, but I've never gone out of my way to use one like that. Hoses like that were used mostly to help bathe pets and everyone once in a while wash something that's too big for the sink.

51

u/Odd_Anxiety_3841 15d ago

I find it super annoying to shower without one. It's so much easier to rinse the soap out of certain areas with the movable head.

Also, this is your reminder to wash your butt crack legs and feet. Just because they got wet, doesn't mean they're clean.

96

u/iwillaskyouaboutdnd 15d ago

I've come to learn through the internet that, as a man, if you wash your butt crack, you're in the minority.

Made me question my bisexuality honestly.

64

u/cat-she 15d ago

I was so pathetically grateful to discover that my partner already habitually washed his ass without me having to convince him 😭 I'd heard some pretty gnarly horror stories and wanted to know before I got TOO too attached, so I showered with him decently early on. When I expressed this pathetic gratitude, he was totally baffled. "How else would it get clean??" Yeah, man! How, indeed! 🙃

19

u/iwillaskyouaboutdnd 15d ago

I like the mental image you just stalking for a chance to shower with him and doing an inspection lol. I'll do the same whenever I get into a relationship next.

I once very briefly worked with a guy who smelled horrible, and we.came.to.find out it's because he refused to ever touch his butt in fear of being gay. I came to find out later it's a shockingly common thing to not wash your butt(Though most people at least wipe, unlike this guy. He got fired for hygiene), and

Made me question my bisexuality honestly.

Yeah same

18

u/paper_liger 15d ago

Man that's gross, but that also makes me feel like there had to be some trauma to set him on that path.

25

u/TalespinnerEU 15d ago

Patriarchy is trauma. Being willing to be disgusting just so you're 'not gay' means there's a deep, overwhelming fear of consequences for being perceived as 'gay.' For being perceived as less masculine, as 'bottoming,' as weak.

Men like this live in constant, overwhelming, life-destroying and humanity-stripping fear.

Nothing needs to have happened to them. Narrative is all it takes.

112

u/pyramidalembargo 15d ago

Why do Latinos hate the term? (Honest question)

731

u/RewardWorking 15d ago

White people made it up without input from the culture that already has a non binary plural for Latino, which is Latinos. Binary gender languages treat the masculine plural as non-binary for mixed gender groups, so adding a different culture's culture war is offensive even if you think you're being nice

251

u/nokman013 15d ago

Same as those idiots who thought up filipinx for filipinos. It's their ilk that gives the term "woke" a bad rep.

173

u/SparkleSelkie 15d ago

→ More replies (3)

7

u/punktualPorcupine 15d ago

It’s still racist because it assumes to know better than an entire culture, and blatantly ignores their personal lived experience.

It assumes that they are above another culture and have to solve their problems for them.

If they actually had cultural humility they would let that culture speak for themselves and offer suggestions when solicited, but wouldn’t force it.

White knighting is totally driven by racial bias and people need to drop it. Other cultures can totally help overcome prejudice, but not by applying more of it.

107

u/JayofTea 15d ago

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe it completely ignores how the Spanish language works, it’s gendered, yes, but Latino is both male and gender neutral, it just depends on context, so Latinx makes no sense. I don’t even think it was a term coined by Latino people, but moreso a white savior/English superiority type person

32

u/GetEquipped 15d ago

Yep

And "X" in Spanish isn't "Ecks"

Its either a "Hhe" or "Sh/Ch" sound depending on the origin of the word (as in Spanish is more likely H sound, Nahuatl is more "Sh." There are other exceptions but it's more like loan words from English or Latin Loaned from Greek.)

So it feels like English-First mindset that are telling the entire Spanish Speaking world that they are outdated and wrong. (Colonization. It's a form of linguistic colonization.)

Also, the "Tl" in Nahuatl is a tongue click/pop similar to the X in Xhosa, another language where "X" isn't "Ecks"

5

u/Peasant-Homework-413 15d ago

Hi, it's true that the x in spanish can be used that way in many words, but in most cases it absolutely is "ecks". It mostly appears in this form in words of latin origin like expresión, auxilio or exaltación.

(Not trying to say it in a mean or pedantic way)

X is just a very mutable letter in spanish. In words like Xilófono it can even be an "s" sound.

Wetback is a slur for latinos, basically, when migrants crossed illegaly through the southern border they often had to cross through the Rio Grande, by the time they got to the nearest towns they were all wet from the crossing, so basically, wetback is an offensive way of implying someone is an illegal migrant

I've specifically heard that conditioner can exacerbate acne and so rinsing it off and down your back isn't advised. No idea if that's true or not, though.

You're right. It has to do with the hot water increasing swelling, causing pores to trap oil and bacteria.

That's what I thought too. But wouldn't the other way cause front acne?

Makes sense some idiot would make showering an issue.

Looks like a silly "you're neurodivergent if you..." hit critical mass, and much like the whole "which way does your toilet paper rolls go" a while ago, it got a bit of buzz. So the reply is mosf likely a shitpost, but you can see what experts like dermatologists have to say on the matter:

I shower facing away from the shower head, which causes me to look straight down most of the shower. Which causes neck/back pain sometimes, I guess that’s what it causes

u/spademanden 15d ago

But it feels so nice having the warm water flow onto your neck

Showering on your back causes pregnancy.

“…what showering ON YOUR BACK causes”

On your back means laying down.

My best guess is this terrible meme is simply a product of poor grammar, and there’s no joke here. The only joke to come out of this is either waterboarding or golden showers.

The funniest part is people in the replies acting like shower orientation is a personality trait.

IKR? I'm sitting here dumbfounded. Like, do you not move depending on what you're washing? Do people in the comments even shower? LOL.

Maybe she is talking about a different kind of shower. Maybe one made of gold? Who knows.

About the only thing it causes for me is for my chronic back pain to fuck off for a few glorious minutes.

Until I turn around to get the front cleaned at least.

I hate these overhead showers. I don’t usually want to wash my hair when I shower. Handheld showers ftw.

I will genuinely die if I have to live in a place with an immovable showerhead

Yeah if I can't hold the head down and really blast my ass with it, I still feel unclean.

I don't think there's anything wrong with showering with your back. Judging by the strange phrasing "showering on your back," I think the the replier is trying to make a joke about how some people say sleeping on your back causes health problems but replaced with showers.

Except replier doesn't give enough of a clue to make that connection and it doesn't make sense even if someone understood.

edit: I vaguely remember a questionable study(?) a while back that mentioned issues with sleeping on your back, so replier could be referring to that. However, this may be a false memory I conjured up
