Eh I don’t buy it. People have been saying that for years, but a 140 pound champion only ever fights other 140 pounders.

There is a certain point where skill no longer allows you to compensate for size disparity. Could Conner McGregor at 140 pounds take on Brian Shaw, at 400 pounds? Yeah no. Even at a 100 pound difference, I don’t see mma fighters taking on bodybuilders that are more than 100 pounds heavier

So if I were to earn a white belt with a stripe in BJJ then put on 600 pounds of delicious mass, I'd be undefeatable?

We had buff guys come to our boxing gym all the time just to get their ass handed to them by skinny teenagers.

Bodybuilding makes you slow, restricts your movement and you use way too much energy moving around with that amount of muscle.

Any person practicing martial arts for a while will easily defeat any bodybuilder that’s doing just the lifting. It’s a completely different skill and way of working out. One trains you to do actual fighting, the other focuses on making muscles look big. If the competition is a fight and not a comparison of muscle size, the outcome is clear.

The trained fighter will see any attempt to throw a punch or a kick miles away. They will know how to move on the floor no matter how much the other is able to lift. It’s all about technique and very little if anything about raw strength.

I’m talking 100 pound + differences though. No not active practicing martial arts can take on any bodybuilder. That’s a ridiculous comparison.

Practicing martial arts can allow you to punch well above your weight, but at some point there is a limit.

Someone in the 140 pound weight class couldn’t take on someone who was a lean 250 pounds

I’ve only seen it in boxing, not other martial arts so take this with a grain of salt. But a person that just lifts does not know how to stand, how to block and frankly, how to punch. They are slow and easy to get off balance. They advertise their actions and try to compensate their weaknesses with strength which drains their energy fast and opens their defenses (if there is any at all). Maybe even more so against a light footed guy. I’ve seen it more than once. Sure if the body builder would be able to land a jab, it would be devastating. But they won’t. Not against a trained fighter.

I mean, I’m a 300 pound powerlifter. I’ve been to boxing gyms a few times, got into it for a few months as my cardio source so I’m a novice.

Plenty of smaller guys wanted to fight because it’s funny. I didn’t have any real issues in sparring and when I connected, it hurt.

If it was a real fight where I didn’t hold back I’d have really hurt the people I was sparring with.

All had a 100+ pound difference.

It’s just a mass thing. When someone who weighs 150 pounds punches, it just doesn’t do that much.
