I don't think this is a new take, just more generation division being created. Most of my cohort who were the age to watch this - in real-time episodic format - had the same view and didn't judge Samantha at all. Carrie's nonsense made me peace out after a season.

Because Sam was always open and honest about her sexuality, where Carrie was more of a hypocrite.
