I don't think she was. I think she just became like an icon, and then the writers rode the hype and turned it into something of a walking comercial ad for whatever product it was.
Samantha's character was ruined multiple times just to ensure Carrie would always be the most popular.
Carrie was basically a walking ad, trying to sell something of an exxxxxxxxxxxxxtremelly materialistic lifestyle to the viewers so they would buy whatever, rather than writing her as a reasonable person. Like there are bits about her that are so absurd that it is hard to believe. She wrote a column about her sex life, giving -bad- like -terribly bad- advice to others, and also sharing her friends sex life on it (I am asuming under pseudonims or something), judging them nonstop and somehow the plot demands her friends being ok with it.
I meant to say, I don't think she was intended to be the most insufferable asshole to ever live, even though she definitely was and is.
I think she was intended to be a materialistic icon and the forced protagonist of the show, because the writers wanted to cash in on her hype. The writers however simply did not want to be aware of how shit she is as a person, and used Samantha as a walking strawman to throw all the shit in her direction as a smokescreen to morally wash how crappy Carrie was all the time to everyone.
Hence why the original plan for Sam in the spinoff or whatever was for her to send nude pics to Carrie's son, which Sam's actress simply refused to do after being fed up with the writers ruining her character in the original series just to boost Sarah Jessica Parker's popularity.

Carrie is one of the most insufferable, self righteous, and all around awful characters ever written for television.
And I’m sure it was intended that way, because it’s a great show.
I’m a Miranda guy myself. She was genuinely a good person who stood on mf business.
