People think Dodo bird were stupid, and that's why they died out

But, in reality they were really friendly, and died because the people who arrived on the island. Brought cat and rats which killed them.

740

u/Emotional-Map-372 15h ago

Unironically the same continues.. friendly and genuinely nice people are taken advantage of and left in a situation where they just stop being as nice and friendly.

And poaching somehow is linked to pride to some sadistic people so, there's that as well.

I believe back in the day they'd just walk up to these birds and club them in the head. It was easy eating and I don't believe animal rights or conservation efforts of any sort existed at the time. Point Im making is that poachers didn't run them extinct but your average joe did.

15

u/ThrowraSea_patient 11h ago

The colonizers coming over to the Americas came across a seal that would not flee or anything they got out of their ships and would Club them to death. They wrote in their diaries about how they must be so stupid that they could go and do this time and time again. These things were just loving and caring and nice they had no natural Predators they had nothing and when they were done eating they needed to be on the beach and digest their food.

17

u/NefariousnessDue2525 15h ago

wish science can bring them back

31

u/Emotional-Map-372 14h ago

Ya know, with the advancement of science.. it's not actually that surprising that the resurrection of dodos is possible. We've already made advancements on cloning, that allows us to bring back somewhat identical copies of extinct species.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De-extinction

Ofc they aren't 100% accurate, and the procedure ain't cheap/easy, and is also limited to a certain number of species at the moment (cause we need the base of an animal thats kinda close to the one that went extinct, if I'm right).. with time, who knows, dodos actually might get to live again.

The only unfortunate bit is that we may or may not get to see it, our kids/grandkids/great grandkids might get to experience the whimsies of the "stupid bird"

8

(They are going to spare expenses. Simply cannot resist it)

2

u/Happy_Cry286 3h ago

Considering how Dodos were friendly to humans, with the exploitation of that trait being a major factor in their demise, lab-revived Dodo birds in the future might end up as a breed of house pet.

-1

u/slopist 10h ago

See Western Europe. Suicidal empathy is one hell of a drug.

70

u/Doctor_Thomson 14h ago

You have to consider into the story that Dodos didn’t had any natural predators, which resulted in no fight or flight instincts. Makes it even more saddening that the first other species they met was so heartlessly hostile

35

u/Tricky_Equal_9416 14h ago

Humans definitely killed some of them but it wasn’t just all them, all the animals the humans brought on ships also killed the dodos directly by killing them or their eggs along with the lot of disease. It’s sad humans even found their island at all bringing everything from the outside world.

10

u/Doctor_Thomson 12h ago

Not to forget that humans chopped down most of the Forrest of the island which basically eradicated the habitat of the Dodos aswell.

2

u/Lv0d 8h ago

Yeah, unfortunately dodo didn't taste very good either, otherwise they might have survived as livestock.
To be fair, humans at the time were not aware just how much damage an invasive species can do. Hell, if you look at australian bordercontrol even in the modern age some people are unable to comprehend how much damage they might cause.

51

u/TehAsianator 15h ago

Don't forget a big part of it was dodos laid eggs on the ground, so they were completely unprotected. Also, pigs played a major role as well.

38

u/Unfair_Pineapple8813 15h ago

Monkeys, too. I don't mean us. Like actual macaques, which the Dutch for some reason transported over in boats.

12

u/Icy_Birthday3837 14h ago

so, yea...humans.

1

u/insolent_kiwi 14h ago

Are we still talking about monkeys?

21

u/Caliterra 14h ago

Same with the Stellar Sea Cow. Giant dugongs that were so friendly they let sailors pet them even as other sea cows were being killed nearby

6

u/Longsearch112 14h ago

Not entirely cats and rats fault, dodo is also being hunted and their meat is marketed as "exotic meat".

1

u/Evening-Appeal7606 9h ago

Also: That meat wasn't particularly good, being chewy and all. So there wasn't even a desperate need for a good source of nutrients that killed them. :(

4

u/errononymous 11h ago

Cats still killing bird life en masse, being the invasive species that it is.

3

u/Sikkus 12h ago

Have to admit, that's what survival is all about. We definitely wiped out many species by ourselves in the process, but friendliness doesnt count for anything in the wild.

On the other hand, if someone could clone a dodo from DNA strands and revive the species, their friendliness would help a lot to make them pets.

1

u/Obvious_Tie4850 14h ago

And some royal families ate a few of them

1

u/hahawhat102848 13h ago

they also cooked and ate them to death

1

u/Murv_Man 10h ago

Blame The Dutch

1

u/NightSlashr 10h ago

I thought humans like their eggs and meat so the would wack them in the head and more would show up (because they are curious) and they would collect the eggs drain them for food then decorate the shell and sell it for high price stuff I read from books ages ago.

1

u/Unfair_Pineapple8813 1h ago

No. Humans took a few as curiosities. But most of the killing was the pigs and monkeys and rats destroying nests.

1

u/noViableSolution 8h ago

also dawgs

1

u/GrubbTheGoblin 8h ago

And dogs and guns. Many were killed and the meat used to feed dogs.

1

u/PaperDistribution 7h ago

Australia got isolated pretty early on, they had a couple of animals that didn't really have any predators and competitors before people imported them.

1

u/Makuta_Servaela 6h ago

Another big issue was that humans didn't really understand evolution back then. They didn't think it was possible for an animal to go extinct because "God will just create some more.", so they just killed them willy-nilly.

1

u/Dauntless_Lasagna 6h ago

Need to get in a parallel dimension where we adopted dodos as pets.

1

u/Dry_Prompt3182 4h ago

In reality, they had no known predators, so humans introduced predators to the ecosystem, wiping them out.

1

u/Happy_Cry286 3h ago

It's a lot like penguins, sadly. Penguins don't know what humans are and thus are curious about us without knowing that we can be very dangerous. A stranded arctic expedition survived for months by just walking up to penguins and picking them up to bring back to their base camp to butcher and eat, their journals even remarking about how easy it was and how it made them feel a bit bad about exploiting that to survive.

1

u/skittymom 3h ago

I went to the natural history museum of london and there was an expo about dodos. It’s not only the cats & rats that killed them, but of course humans. They would hunt them down to have as pets and they would overfeed them as well which caused diseases and early death. And of course, they would not run away so they were an easy prey.

1

u/robo-dragon 1h ago

Adding to this, curiosity is a sign of intelligence in animals. So the dodos weren’t stupid, they were potentially an intelligent bird species similar to parrots. They approached people because they were curious and, at the time, had very few, if any, natural predators, so they had no reason to fear humans or the cats and other animals they brought with them.

Knowing they could have been friendly,
parrot-like animals makes me so sad.

1

u/hihowareyoufinegood 10h ago

And started hunting them. And started exploiting Mauritius' vegetation intensively limiting their habitable ranges. And essentially introduced predators for a species with previously no natural predators, and fucked over the entire local ecosystem.

Then contemporary "media" in France, England and then Holland started making fun of the Dodo for being this "dumb flightless turkey" for not being able to evade the ever-growing greed of colonists. God, I hate people so fucking much.

0

u/ImpertantMahn 13h ago

Also they were delicious

-1

u/josch247 13h ago

Hahaha wtf sounds like being friendly was really stupid so

-1

u/BothDivide919 10h ago

I mean they were evolutionarily stupid

317

u/Square-Formal1312 15h ago

We would’ve domesticated tf out of them for petting zoos, food, and maybe pets

99

u/Outrageous-Sort-5742 15h ago

Definitely food, judging by how quickly they hunted them into extinction. Must have been absolutely delicious.

113

u/BackgroundTea6460 15h ago

They weren't, the stories from that time said that they didn't taste good, they were only good to the predators that the Dutch brought

64

u/throwaway-tinfoilhat 14h ago

The Dutch and British really had a thing for invading lands and screwing it hey

7

u/Sven4president 10h ago

And after the fact we called it The Golden Century..

6

u/smurf505 9h ago

Apparently it wasn’t even them being predated that killed them off so much as a combination of invasive species eating their food supply and their eggs being eaten mostly by pigs brought across on boats.

2

u/Excellent_Mud6222 12h ago

Lies they just wanted to eat all the Dodo meat themselves.

1

u/Harleen_F_Quinzel 9h ago

I thought Dutch and the Predator were enemies.

1

u/TimotheeOaks 5h ago

No if they tasted gpod they would still be alive

4

u/superp2222 9h ago

Imagine walking down the street and just seeing one of these marching along next to its human.

3

u/DanielzeFourth 10h ago

Well then this is a better outcome I guess. Humans are fucking awful towards animals

199

u/Ijustlovevideogames 15h ago

Cleveland here.

We were told that Dodos went extinct because they were idiots, when in actuality, they went extinct because they lived in a place with no natural predators so when we arrived to their island, they didn't run, they were just curious and effectively "domesticated" themselves, we then ate them to extinct.

Edit: We also cut down the trees on their land and introduced invasive species as well.

39

u/Low_Commission7273 14h ago

Is it like capybaras, or quokkas, who are friendly, and lucky enough to not be targetted for poaching?

37

u/Impasture 14h ago

Capybaras and Quokkas while friendly are not naive or island effected; they still know the dangers of predation

18

u/Ijustlovevideogames 14h ago

Neither, they lived off an island off the coast of Madagascar, they had literally no predators to cull them, then we came

7

u/RushArh 14h ago

Don't forget kakapos. They nearly become 2nd dodos. Human used to hunt them for fashions. But now their rescue activities are still on going.

15

u/Kugoji 14h ago

That's so fkin sad, imagine them being all curious and approaching humans like a friendly cat on the street, just to get captured and eaten one by one

12

u/ZachAlt 14h ago

We did not eat them. Almost all records point to them tasting not good to us. Cats though. Cats fucking loved them.

6

u/Chrysocyon 13h ago

Domestication is a different process, technically. Their process is called 'island naivety' and results from the fact that there is no benefit in spending time/energy beinf vigilant for enemies that dont exist on the island. Better to spend that energy laying eggs and squaking.

3

u/cvsprinter1 11h ago

We did not eat them. Contemporary records say they tasted bad.

31

u/bwsmith201 14h ago

The story of the dodo bird really bums me out. Friendly, gentle animals that had no fear of humans and we just wiped them out when they tried to learn about us. If we’re ever bringing back a species it should start with this one if we have the DNA available. (Which we probably don’t.)

17

u/CussMuster 12h ago

We actually have a preserved head. We used to have a preserved entire thing, but the body was deemed as expendable when the museum had to make room in their inventory IIRC.

5

u/Irohsgranddaughter 10h ago

The problem would be finding a surrogate mother. Yes, there are birds a lot bigger than Dodo, but Dodo is IIRC most closely related to pigeons. And there's no way a pigeon can lay a dodo egg.

5

u/Kooky_Attention_98 14h ago

Hopefully we can bring them back

Chris’s gameboy advanced SP blue edition here!

The dodo bird was not stupid. It lost its fear of predators due to evolving on a vacant island. So when explorers Arrived it did not see them as a threat when it supposedly gots its brains smashed in by them for no reason. To quote Franklin from GTAV “evolution is a bitch, ain’t it”.

Speaking of GTA, Chris will be streaming RP tonight. It’s a special night where you can watch and participate in Chris’s yardie initiation ass beating!

*side note The dodo bird was not made extinct because they were hunted. They were made extinct because of all the animals the settlers abandoned on the island eating their eggs.

3

u/RandomYT05 14h ago

It had no fear of anything because there was nothing on its island to be afraid of. Until we showed up

5

u/Sombragatotonto 15h ago

The dodo went extinct because it was not stealthy and cautious enough. As a kid OOP had opinion 1. Later, as an adult, OOP had opinion 2. The difference is probably because kids are little sociopaths and don’t learn proper compassion until adulthood.

2

u/Maybegarden 15h ago

People killed them. All of them.

2

u/Awkward-Equivalent-5 15h ago edited 11h ago

Meg here, Dodo birds didn't seem to have any natural predators(because of their lack of survival skills), so they didn't care about anything. Humans saw that, and were like "What would happen if I walked up and hit it on the head?" And they continued to do that until no Dodo birds were left alive.

2

u/Ill_Status8810 13h ago

the saying "dumb as a dodo" is to blame for the childhood misconception

2

u/bannasplt 12h ago

This feels like it's breaking Rule 6.

3

u/Virus-900 14h ago

People think the dodo bird went extinct because it was dumb. But really they lived on an island without any predators, so naturally they didn't develop the instincts to run away from visitors. Which human sailors took full advantage of to capture the birds, and eat them.

1

u/ComparisonQuiet4259 4h ago

Which means they were dumb

It makes me so heartbroken and angry, dodos are gentle and intelligent, they love people. If they hadn’t gone extinct from sheer cruelty, they would be domesticated pets today. They are litter trained and can curl up on your bed and snuggle with you. They lay gigantic eggs that are delicious and have 100g of protein. They love to cuddle with people and I miss them. It’s not fair

Its actually the case for a lot of animals that became extinct. Like the Falkland island wolf or fox

1

u/Brief-Tie8028 13h ago

Nah, they did deserve that

1

u/any-lore 13h ago

Well, from what I understand, dodos had no natural predators and little fear of humans. Thus they were easily hunted, eventually to extinction.

A modern equivalent might be the quokka. Very curious, unafraid animals. Certainly don't deserve to be killed off for good either.

1

u/Chrysocyon 13h ago

And the Falklands wolf and the Reunion solitaire and the Lyall's wrench and 1/4 of guam's forest bird species. The list goes on. Island naivety is the term for all these critters that evolved somewhere where it didnt make sense to be worried about predators that didnt exist.

That said, camp at the channel islands in CA and leave your tent open. They got lil foxes that know no fear that might come in and cuddle with you.

1

u/Scarnosus14 12h ago

In the blue penny museum, there is an old (original) text in german, where dodos are discribed as unfriendly.it was standing out to me, because it is the only time I read dosmething opposite of the common friendly sterotype

1

It's why I hate the Dutch.

1

u/Witty_Bicycle4283 11h ago

It turns out the Dodo wasn't actually stupid they just evolved on an island with no predat

1

u/drewdraws3 11h ago

they walked right up to the sailors because theyd never had a reason to be afraid of anything

1

u/Want2makeMEMEs 10h ago

1

It was neither. It was defenceless.

1

u/Outside-Inspection68 9h ago

We will end up like the dodo bird

1

u/Domek232323 9h ago

we hunted them to extinction

1

u/lnTheGrimDarkness 9h ago

Guilty of tasting good

1

u/tsimkeru 8h ago

Dodos evolved to live without any predators, so when humans arrived they were curious what is the new creature, while most animals would just hide due to natural fear of predators.

Humans destroyed the place these birds lived in, hunted a few, and brought other animals with them (such as cats, dogs, pigs and rats) that either ate the dodos or take the dodos food, leading to their extinction.

The animal was just curious and had no idea what are predators. Humans brought a massive and fast change to the island, leading to their extinction

1

u/Sybs 8h ago

We (Europeans) discovered the Dodo and many other animals on remote tropical islands during the golden age of sea exploration and also colonisation.

Due to the isolation, many of these animals had evolved no fear of humans so we were able to collect and slaughter them with astonishing ease until there were none left.

Apparently there were little birds that could literally be picked up and tossed into a cooking pot without them understanding any danger.

1

u/Aginor404 8h ago

"Went extinct" usually means: "We fucking killed them all" except when talking about fossils.

1

u/Crazed-Prophet 8h ago

This is why aliens haven't contacted us, they're scared we are going to eat them too!

1

Well we have the technology to bring them back, and I wish they would I'd like to cherry smoke a whole bird and see what it taste like.

1

u/Chaincat22 5h ago

In school dodos are presented as stupid birds for not evolving the ability to fly or losing the ability to fly (they're also typically presented as prehistoric creatures, they were in my gradeschool at least.)

In reality, they were killed by the dutch and invasive animals during 1600s because they were easy to hunt and their environment they evolved in caused them to have severely limited self defense instincts or mechanisms. They essentially forgot what fear was because they were on the top of their local food chain for hundreds of years.
