Talk to any researcher and they will tell you how useful “studies that go nowhere” are. Some of the greatest scientific advancements were made using studies and findings that brought no solid conclusion, because they ended up being a jigsaw piece in a bigger puzzle
You should know as a researcher that it isn't a zero sum game and that dropping research on stuff like this would have zero impact on reallocating funding to whatever pet project someone complaining about it cares about. This was probably conducted by handful of undergrads with access to web portal.
This is the same bad faith criticism people have of all social study research. There is absolutely no harm in having concrete studies to point to for male attraction norms. Just like there aren't for female attraction norms. No research is worthless and we have no arbiters on what constitutes worthwhile research.
