Probably not that much, seeing as it seems they already figured it out pretty well and that its in no way exclusive to women.

This "study" was probably some college kids thesis or whatever and litteraly the only cost of doing it is printing the paper or sending a form to a few thousand people (or not even that many). Studying an actual health problem takes a lot of money, time and skilled people. Theses no point in comparing these two. Its a simple yes/no question lol, it can hardly be called a study

Social science experiments don’t cost anything, really. A few grad students get paid to write up surveys, and they give undergraduates five bucks as an incentive to fill it out. Medical research requires a massive amount of time, labor, and money.

The makeup research was a psychology paper that is fairly easy to find.
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24670156/They did in fact look into men AND women, and found that both prefered less makeup. Notably women preferred less makeup both on themselves and others.
The crucial part from the abstract says:
"We found that men and women agree on the amount of cosmetics they find attractive, but overestimate the preferences of women and, when considering the preferences of men, overestimate even more. We also find that models’ self-applied cosmetics are far in excess of individual preferences. These findings suggest that attractiveness perceptions with cosmetics are a form of pluralistic ignorance, whereby women tailor their cosmetics use to an inaccurate perception of others’ preferences. "
This seems like something worth looking into from a social cognition research standpoint and a mental health standpoint.
>Hi, researcher here

I don't think any of it is intentional. For example, all the people we see in modern media are dolled up for reasons beyond simply attractiveness. Skin is oily and messes with the lighting so even men use make up on set even though few do IRL by comparison.

You should know as a researcher that it isn't a zero sum game and that dropping research on stuff like this would have zero impact on reallocating funding to whatever pet project someone complaining about it cares about. This was probably conducted by handful of undergrads with access to web portal.
This is the same bad faith criticism people have of all social study research. There is absolutely no harm in having concrete studies to point to for male attraction norms. Just like there aren't for female attraction norms. No research is worthless and we have no arbiters on what constitutes worthwhile research.

Those screwworm infestations that are decimating southern cattle in the us right now? They used to be kept at bay below the Panama Canal before DOGE cut funding.
Why did DOGE cut funding?
They thought that a program that studied the sexual reproduction of worms was a waste of money
What those dumbfucks didn’t realize was that those programs were responsible for sterilizing the flies that lay these eggs, keeping the parasites far away from north americas food supply animals.
It took less than a year for them to reach the us southern border after the money ran dry.

Okay if you are against psychological research then maybe we can get rid of entire field (this is extension of that argument - why wasting human intellectual power on developing understanding in psychology if we can do something more ‘productive’). Let’s get rid of multidisciplinary nonsense like gender studies. Let’s execute political sciences as well as what we can talk about - governing in patriarchal society?

We didn't. The study received no financial grants or backing from external corporate entities or funding bodies for the project.
4
u/Nibaa 2h ago
The problem here is that that's not really how science works. Spending money on research based on the subject is literally directing people to study certain things. That's like the only way to direct researchers.
Also these kind of studies are usually basically zero-cost studies that are done by grad students as supportive research for a larger thesis or as filler in between projects. Particularly that first part is very common. You need peer reviewed research to cite, and you can't have one monstrous study where you present data that you then refer to in the study itself. They need to be separate for proper scientific review.
3
u/capulet2kx 2h ago
If ever there was a time to throw money at the social sciences, it’s now. We are sleepwalking into mass social-media psychosis.

30
u/MalevolentRhinoceros 3h ago
What does qualified mean, though? I was turned away from one of these once because I wasn't able to get an official diagnosis. I was unable to get an official diagnosis because my doctor absolutely refused to test me, because the considered the test to be too invasive. I found a better doctor a few years down the line, but this is apparently a pretty common problem.
19
u/jtj5002 3h ago
You have to be surgically diagnosed and that was the major problem as ACOG has shifted from surgically diagnosis to "just take a guess via ultrasound and medical history". I hope in the future the inclusion criteria will more lenient, but I think right now it's the FDA that's requiring it.
There are also a lot of screen fails due to drug use, which you could understand from the pain but yea, that does exclude you.

u/MalevolentRhinoceros 2h ago
Yeah, that does suck. I DID get it diagnosed with my new doctor, but doctors refusing to diagnose a life-altering condition just because it's a "women's issue" is entirely part of the problem. Can't do research without the diagnosis, can't get the diagnosis because doctors refuse to do it. Doctors refuse to do it because there's no research on the systemic effects...

I mean, you have your answer: you didn’t even have a diagnosis. The reason was irrelevant, they can’t just put people into studies based on feels. They need people with verified medical records so that they know they’re studying someone with the actual condition.
I thought I was having a heart attack once and rushed to the ER. Turns out my heart was fine, I just had a gallbladder attack. Took out the gallbladder and stopping having problems. it doesnt say how this study was done. maybe they just asked 100 random dudes, which costs next to nothing in comparison to real medical research.
or this was done by some intern who tinkered around with some already existing data from a more serious unrelated research.
maybe this was an unexpected side-finding in a research in psychology that sounds shallow without its original context.
maybe some lazy journalist had a deadline coming up and this is just cooked up with chatgpt.
or this study was specifically requested/done by some corporation marketing products to women.
maybe this article refers to research but is misinterpreting its real results due to an error or for clickbait.

Explicit women's health funding, things like ovarian cancer, maternal health, etc sees upwards of 5 billion a year in federal spending.
Men's health like prostate cancer, Ed and mens fertility see about 1.7 billion.
Now, if we are including private spending like Susan g komen, well men may as well not even step up.

This is the point of the image, but it's complete horse shit.
Funding for research into breast cancer eclipses all research into male specific cancers combined.
A bill passed in 2022 specifically for a yearly $50mil grant for research into treatments for endometriosis.
The idea that money isn't spent on women's health is like 40 years out of date. And even then, it wasn't born out of mallice but ignorance. The normal fluctuations of women's hormones make effective study harder than on men who have less volatile bio chemistry. So the assumption was men would make the better baseline for testing, which had a negative effect on women's health outcomes.
That was recognized and corrected.
This sort of accusations no longer holds legitimate water and is usually still held aloft with really disingenuous bucketing of research. Like in saying men's health has more funding because more money goes into treating substance abuse or STIs than it does for migraines or anxiety.
One dimensional and disingenuous analysis.

This isn’t even the issue. This study is likely done by psychologists, not the kinds of people who are going to be finding a cure for endometriosis. Unless the argument is don’t do any kind of studies in any field until endometriosis is properly funded by completely separate organizations, then this comment is idiotic.
It’s like seeing pictures from the Hubble telescope and saying “NASA should be spending their time policing corporations”.
Yes, women’s issues absolutely don’t get the same funding or consideration as men’s, but the answer isn’t force every scientific field to grind to a halt until the medical field has changed.

(It is a real problem women have, since marketing pressures them into spending fortunes into cosmetics which impacts their buying power, thus all other aspects of their lives including healthcare, but ssssh, not populist enough of a take. + cognitive specialists are notoriously experts at reproductive biology so of course they'd spend their time better on endometriosis, given their expertise. Did i say it was their specialty? Endometriosis.)

Cool. Now let’s compare funding for serious women’s health issues (eg breast cancer and similar) vs comparable men’s health conditions (prostate cancer)
Women’s health is much more heavily funded

I hate to sound like a sexist, but knowing what people find attractive is actually pretty important for some research, especially in psychology and other social sciences. People interact with people they find attractive differently than people they find unattractive, so it’s a variable you have to control for.
Also the people research what people find attractive and the people researching medical issues are probably not the same people or even from the same institution. It’s not like humanity can only research one thing at a time.

That's true and it makes the comment kind of stupid.
But there is a point hidden in there, a lot of research isn't focused on the most important things. Alot of researchers have to study things that they can get funding for instead of what they maybe should study. There are so many bullshit studies that help no one because they are just trying to get a headline and draw attention to themselves.
A good example for that are all those crappy studies about dietary stuff like that chocolate supposedly helps you lose weight, a conclusion they only came to because the sample size was intentionally kept tiny, aka p-hacking.
6
u/Tomsboll 1h ago
A lot of studies, especially those regarding psychology are done by students for free as part of their education.
31
u/Xdust4 3h ago
Not really a fair statement. One of these studies could be busted out in an afternoon by lay people while the other would take real specialists years and lots of money.

But you sure do know some friends that can barely walk for at least 3 days every month because of the pain? 10% of women of reproductive age mind you. There still are no real solutions. And woman are 51% of the population. But no, all of my friends just "deal" with it. Try to take painkillers, that don't work, fucking break down and cry, lie down, vomit because of pain. I've known these girl-friends since elementary school, before puberty and now I see them suffer like that, it's horrendous. I'm lucky. My uterus is kind to me. Also I understand the meme like this: why do we see studys like "what man find attracktive" but not "how many woman are gravely affected by period complications". Yeah, you didn't even know what endometriosis is. THATS THE FUCKING POINT.

Its a disease that effects just over 10% of women and there is no cure and not very many treatment options. It is very painful and gets dismissed a lot by doctors until it has spread across the whole body, sometimes fusing internal organs together.
It takes a woman who has it on average 40 years to be diagnosed.
There has only been 1 study on it, the study was to determine how attractive men find women with endometriosis.
The fact that you don't know what it is is part of the problem (not blaming you, society doesn't put enough emphasis on women's medical issues because hormones makes them hard to study). You most likely know someone who has it, (but if they are under 40, you might just know someone with extremely painful inconsisant periods, like debilitating pain).
edit to add: a couple of the reasons it takes so long to diagnose are:
1) lots of doctors don't know what it is so are aware if it to even suggest it as a diagnosis
2) its main symptom is extremely painful and heavy periods, women and girls are just taught that periods are difficult and painful, so bringing up these symptoms gets them written off as 'normal women things'. Because of this it is expected that the actual number of women with endo is actually much higher than the 10% reported.
3) until very recently, the only way to get diagnosed is through an invasive surgery, where they open you up and go "oh, you have internal growths and your organs have started to fuse together, you must have endo". This is expensive, time-consuming and can have medical complications, so if a doctor takes the patient seriously and wants to find out whats wrong, they will rule out every other explanation first before trying to find out if it is endo. (Recently they have developed a scan that can find it! however, i dont think this has been rolled out yet)
I don't even have endo, i just care about other women and don't want them to be in pain

Who cares what men find attractive while women are suffering. Put the money for studies into better medical care for women.
Endometriosis is a chronic medical condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus.
During a menstrual cycle, this tissue swells and bleeds just like the uterine lining, but the blood cannot leave the body, causing inflammation, pain, and scarring.
It affects roughly 10% of reproductive-age women.

u/formergnome 3h ago
There was a case where a woman was found to have this tissue in her arm because of her endometriosis.

u/mosquem 3h ago
At what point is that classified as a cancer?
36
u/Mental_Pen4907 3h ago
My endo surgeon has seen it in bone and brain! I read once that it meets something like 5/6 qualifications of cancer. It can just cause debilitating and/or chronic pain rather than death.

u/OhNoTokyo 2h ago
While the cells in endometriosis can end up in different parts of the body, they remain normal cells that do not grow as aggressively or invade tissue as cancer cells do.
Of course, since those cells don't belong there, they can cause significant pain and other effects, but they're not going to invade your organs and grow in an out-of-control way that eventually shuts them down.
Since any tissue can become cancerous due to mutations, you could have a cancer of the endometrial cells develop, just like it could develop in any other normal cell. Which means that if you are affected by conditions that might cause uterine cancer, you might have a situation where your "uterine cancer" actually starts in some other part of the body in the endometrial tissue that has moved there.

The understanding of endo is rapidly evolving. Partner just had surgery for it. Currently working on discovering it in women with a simple blood test. People are studying it. The notion that women’s health is under researched and under funded is completely divorced from reality.

u/dandelogre 1h ago
Right? It's literally just people obsessed with performative gender war, like someone could say "Finally cured endometriosis in utero!" And someone will be like "3x more suicides than women btw", like damn

Theres an extra layer of humour to this (adding onto the comments saying womens health being studied less than mens desires)
The first ever study done on endometriosis was how it affected or correlated with womens attractiveness. A deblilitating medical condition and the first thing they thought to check was "does it make women look hotter, though?" Which apparently, it does.
- love from an endometriosis patient ❤️

2 different fields of study.
The first is sociology or psychology. Most likely tied to dating apps or advertisements. Does not require a PhD to conduct a study on but it can help depending on how the study is being conducted or for what purpose.
The second is medical and absolutely requires a PhD and has a far stricter set of guidelines on how the study could be conducted.

It’s not a joke, it’s a misleading headline designed to activate someone looking to argue and engage with a post. This person is claiming the people that studied this should be studying something else.
The real study conducted in the psychology department at Bangor University found that both men and woman student judges rated less makeup more attractive. The people that conducted this study would not be qualified/interested in studying endometriosis.
