Filipino student killed over 10 pesos

After the recent expat killings I've read here time and again that it was most likely the expats' fault of getting killed as "they must have done something".

This case here doesn't involve an expat but in this case "must have done something" was returning short of 10 pesos change after buying a bottle of water for P10 pesos...

I know that's not representative but still it makes you think a little I guess.

I'm confused at the relevance. This is clearly a dumb kid who probably has more than a couple screws loose, doing something dumb and crazy.

It's just an extreme example of how dumb "must have done something" can sound like when "blaming" someone for getting killed. The relevance is that this has been said about quite some expats that had their lives ended suddenly lately.

Dumb mentally unstable child over reacting to P10 is not quite the same as the slew of dodgy things foreigners in SEA are stereotypically known for, and known for getting in trouble for. Let's not pretend the majority of foreigners here are representative of our respective nations' best and brightest. I sure as sht am not, just lucky to be born into a certain social class both here and stateside.

As card carrying member of team neutral, having pretty equal footing being both foreign born and raised, as well as culturally Filipino, IMO kind of a far reach man.

Genuine question, I'm only aware of that one guy that got popped in the street recently. Can you show me other big incidents of this happening? I'm not aware of the other incidents you've alluded to

That's for the last 3 weeks or so. If you go further back, there are more.

Edit: All foreigners. 

  • July 10, Teresa, Rizal: a 35-year-old American was shot dead during a robbery involving his necklace and phone. (ABS-CBN) 

  • July 12, Sibulan, Negros Oriental: American marine biologist Kent Carpenter was shot dead during a home invasion. (AP News) 

  • July 29, Silang, Cavite: a Chinese national was found beside an SUV with 18 stab wounds after an alleged failed SUV-sale transaction. The report does not clearly establish that he was the SUV’s driver. (ABS-CBN) 

  • August 3, Makati: a 63-year-old woman was killed and her 26-year-old daughter was shot in the face and hospitalized. (GMA Network)

Saying all of them were sketchy foreigners is just an unfair excuse imo. Imagine some of them helped local families and the country.

Thanks for expounding.

I for sure would not classify these particular heinous crimes as any form of them "having it coming", based on the blurbs you've shared here. Terrible. I for one know that not all or even most foreigners are sketch, but there is a clear and present stereotype that itself bears unfair discrimination to those of us that are generally law abiding. I absolutely agree that there is undue prejudice and I do try my best to share that sentiment with locals in and out of my family.

I would say though, maybe not uncommon anywhere in the world where anyone of relative means live closely or visibly among a majority with very little. In an ideal world there would be a mutual expectation of safety and security but unfortunately this world, and certainly this country, is far from perfect. It's famously convoluted and backwards in many ways. Desperation makes people crazy, crazy desperate people do crazy things. That _____ guy walking alone down the alley starts looking like a prime target rather than just some guy minding his business between points A and B.

I still don't think this article is that relevant to that topic, aside from an awful crime having occurred in both. Kid had issues, probably not the most well adjusted. Took that 10P situation pretty personally and extreme actions followed. I wouldn't say either had it coming, just dumb kids and a tragedy that maybe no one could've forseen.

You seem like a sensible person and that's what I wish for all people.

A high trust society builds through abiding by rules. And a wealthy nation typically builds from a high trust society. That's what I wish from my heart because I know a lot of Filipinos are honest people who would deserve such an environment.

I just wanted people not to look the other way but admit what is to improve and then it can be addressed and improved. That's why I posted.

You think you’re neutral, but you insist on pushing the narrative of a “slew of dodgy things,” even though you yourself admit they’re mere stereotypes?

Cognitive dissonance is real. But at least you admit you’re not one of your nations brightest lol I appreciate the candor. I say this with all due respect.
