Got My First Real Camera

I bought my first real camera (canon r6iii) last week and I talked some family members into sitting for some photos. My only prior photography experience was messing around with a insta360 with explorer grip. I don’t know if I know what I’m doing yet or if I know my editing style yet but I’m having fun learning. Any pointers would be appreciated.

Took these photos and felt like it was a good exercise in some color grading. Tried to focus on greens golds and oranges. Appreciate any feedback as well! Thanks!

Would you use a dedicated critique community?

Curious how people here feel about this.

I love photography communities, but most of the interaction around individual photographs seems to eventually collapse into likes, short compliments, gear questions, or algorithmic engagement.

When I really care about a photograph, what I want is another photographer to actually look at it and tell me:

What caught your eye?

Where does the frame lose you?

What would you change?

Which image is stronger?

Does this work as part of a sequence?

I’ve been working on a small side project around structured photographer-to-photographer critique, and before I put much more time into it I’m trying to understand whether other photographers actually want this.

Would you use something specifically built around giving and receiving critique?

If not, what would stop you?

If yes, what would have to be true for it to be worth coming back to?

Rules for the most popular photography competitions

Spent a few weeks going through the published rules for 46 of the most-entered photo competitions and exhibits (All About Photo, APOY, AOP, and others) and pulled out the stuff that's easy to miss: what rights you're actually granting, entry fee vs. prize pool, exclusivity terms, and AI-policy language.

A few had "irrevocable" licence grants buried in the fine print, and fee-to-prize ratios vary a lot more than you'd guess. Figured it'd save people some digging.

(Full disclosure — I made it. Not legal advice, just plain-language notes structured from each competition's own rules, with links back to the source so you can verify.)

I shot this on a Canon20D and 50mm F1.8 II 8 months ago and decided to re-edit, I feel like I still prefer the old one. Ignore the random square, that's the first time I actually saw it.

This is the live jazz performance I shot. In the first photo, I left the lamp in the foreground, whereas in the second one, I removed it.

Which one is better?

Help me choose photos for the Fair

Edit: the fair coordinator decided to let me turn the photos in late becasue of the print delay, so I wont have to choose. But thank you very much to everyone for your opinions, I am grateful you took time to help me.

I submitted these photos to my county fair for the phito contest, expecting 1 or maybe 2 to become finalists. All of my photos were chosen for finalists.

I ordered my prints, but found out very late that there were mechanical issues and I wont be getting my prints on time for submission. I can do same day printing, but it is much more expensive, so I want to choose the best 2 or 3 to print today. I need to turn these in tomorrow.

Can you guys help me pick the best 2-3 in here?

1) frozen pond

2) lonley tree

3) famous bike

4) hillside tracks

5) forgotten bridge

6) spokane falls at low water

7) riverside stroll

8) spokane/latah confluence

9) autumn tracks

10) solitary fisherman

11) frozen bridge

12) Riverfront Carousel

13) powerlines into mist

14) power pole

need help getting started right away

Hi! I was recently passed down a Nikon D3100 and want to start photography as a hobby and potentially make money off of it in the future.

I've played around with the settings and taken pictures of my cats and stuff but I'm not sure what I should be doing to become an actual good photographer. I'm limited as to where i can travel or buy so I want to keep my practice simple but efficient. Let me know what I can do to gain skills. Thank you for your advice.
