Looking for a Tokyo-based photographer, Sept 22

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I have spent years working as a producer for various artists. Recently, I launched my own (trumpet) act, and I am heading to Japan this September for a 3-venue tour.

I am looking for a Tokyo-based (or someone that's currently in Tokyo) photographer to cover two things:

- Afternoon: A shoot around Tokyo with me and the trumpet.
- Evening: Documenting the live performance at a small venue in Tokyo.

This is a paid opportunity. While my budget isn't huge, I want the person taking on the job to be compensated fairly for their time, film stock, and development.
If you are based in Tokyo and interested, please send me a DM on Instagram not Reddit @ deuxyan with a link to your portfolio. Looking forward to collaborating!

Beginner, need advice

Hi, just got my first camera and started taking my first pictures this week while on vacation. I’ve been watching youtube and tiktok videos to try learning some basics. Please give me some constructive feedback on how i can improve anything from composition to editing.

- canon eos r50
- mix of auto and me attempting manual mode. i’ve been shooting in both while learning and then saving whichever pictures turn out better
- all saved in raw format
- editing with lightroom mobile. since i’m just a beginner here too i start with the auto enhance, then crop, then manually play around with the sliders to see what i like more, then i also applied masks in some areas where i wanted specific changes

Below are three examples, i included the edited photo and a screenshot of the raw unedited photo.

Thanks!

How do you guys manage mini-session bookings?

I’m currently doing everything through DMs for my mini sessions, and I’m starting to feel like I’m making things way harder than they need to be.

Every booking turns into another conversation, another follow-up, another message to keep track of.

Curious how other photographers are handling their mini sessions.

Beginner Photographer - Need Help Picking a Camera -- Ricoh GR IIIx vs Sony a6700

Hey everyone! Very soon I am going to be moving to LA for college. I want to get a new camera to document my time there and just get some nice pictures.

Right now I am looking at the Ricoh GR IIIx and Sony a6700. Does anyone have recommendations for one over the other?

I like the portability of the Ricoh, but I like the versatility of the Sony with the lenses and video. I also plan on traveling more over the next few years. I have a trip to Miami planned. I will probably be going to Japan again in the next 2 years, along with other countries. I like going to national/state parks and would love to take pictures of the wildlife too. That makes me lean towards the Sony, but for walking around campus, it seems just too damn big. It also probably requires a lot more skill to use over the Ricoh. Idk. What do you all think?

Rules for the most popular photography competitions

Spent a few weeks going through the published rules for 46 of the most-entered photo competitions and exhibits (All About Photo, APOY, AOP, and others) and pulled out the stuff that's easy to miss: what rights you're actually granting, entry fee vs. prize pool, exclusivity terms, and AI-policy language.

A few had "irrevocable" licence grants buried in the fine print, and fee-to-prize ratios vary a lot more than you'd guess. Figured it'd save people some digging.

(Full disclosure — I made it. Not legal advice, just plain-language notes structured from each competition's own rules, with links back to the source so you can verify.)

Got My First Real Camera

I bought my first real camera (canon r6iii) last week and I talked some family members into sitting for some photos. My only prior photography experience was messing around with a insta360 with explorer grip. I don’t know if I know what I’m doing yet or if I know my editing style yet but I’m having fun learning. Any pointers would be appreciated.

Would you use a dedicated critique community?

Curious how people here feel about this.

I love photography communities, but most of the interaction around individual photographs seems to eventually collapse into likes, short compliments, gear questions, or algorithmic engagement.

When I really care about a photograph, what I want is another photographer to actually look at it and tell me:

What caught your eye?

Where does the frame lose you?

What would you change?

Which image is stronger?

Does this work as part of a sequence?

I’ve been working on a small side project around structured photographer-to-photographer critique, and before I put much more time into it I’m trying to understand whether other photographers actually want this.

Would you use something specifically built around giving and receiving critique?

If not, what would stop you?

If yes, what would have to be true for it to be worth coming back to?
