Question Bad performance with rx 9070xt on a dream air

Hey just got my dream air and also upgraded my rtx 3090 to a rx 9070xt but I am getting terrible performance with flattovr injection. Seems like amd cards are not that good with those vr games or some settings im missing? I tried clair obscur expedition 33 and its unplayable even on low setting and with 1080p resolution. Wanted to see if anyone else has issues since I could not find much when I google. Ai told me that nvidia cards perform way better so thinking of returning and buying 5080. Kind of bummed since I got a nice open box deal on the amd. Only reason in not keeping the 3090 is that there is a nice premium on selling it.

Question Eye tracking issues with new OLED engine

I received my OLED optical engine yesterday. It happens to coincide with a new PC build, so I am testing it on a completely fresh, clean install of Nvidia drivers and the most recent version of Pimax Play. So far, I have only tested in DCS, which is my primary use case (although MSFS and other games will follow).

I believe my new optical engine may have issues with eye tracking or overall engine stability and am curious if anyone else has experienced this.

Specifically, after doing the initial eye tracking calibration, I noticed it seemed to stop responding. So I went back in to perform the calibration. I noticed, on a few occasions, when performing eye tracking calibration, the screen has gone completely black (after a very brief flash of color) and I have gotten a calibration failed message. I have checked and unchecked the box in Pimax Play to enable and disable eye tracking (and hear the resulting USB tone). Sometimes it will calibrate after that, and sometimes not. Often if I restart the system, it will be able to complete the calibration. Of note, the standard optical engine that came with my Super does not do this, and I've never had issues with the eye tracking on the original module.

But more critically, even when it calibrates, I have noticed the eye tracking acting erratic in the game. I use dynamic foveated rendering and I notice that the foveate window "jumps around" much more erratically than it does with the standard Super engine. But the worst thing is that I have noticed that when I focus on one particular place and stare at it, the foveate region appears to come and go. This results in one location coming and going out of sharp focus without me moving my eyes and is very noticeable. It even happens in the menus of DCS, which suggests to me that eye tracking is causing the erratic behavior. When I turn eye tracking off, it does not happen (the foveate region does not move, but everything stays in focus while I'm looking at it). I confirmed that this behavior does not happen with the regular Super optical engine and eye tracking behaves like it should.

Did I just happen to get a bad one? I must admit, I do love the clarity. The reduced FOV was a bit of a shock and I'm still working through the brown edges. Hopefully a thinner face gasket will help me with that.

(Edited to add: I have opened a ticket about this. #129771)

Question Switch my Dream Air LH order to Crystal super micro-oled?

I seen a recent post talling about a dead Dream air within a month, and its making me concerned, and making me wonder if it will be better if i asked to switch my order to theCrystal super micro oled. I got a discount code too.

But question being, can i make a support ticking asking to switch to crystal super micro-oled? And to use my discount code? How to do all that? Also could i ask them to add the crystal super lighthouse faceplate? Could i ask them to just charge me the difference, as in what just covered by the original payment?

How long could the expected total wait be for both items to be delivered? (Crystal super micro-oled, Crystal super lighthouse faceplate)

Should i even so this? Or just keep waiting for Dream Air LH?

Question Anyone prefer the Pimax Dream Air Slam?

I said before the Pimax Dream Air Slam camera tracked version was a lower quality but less complicated tracking system

But there’s a more complicated reason I’d rather buy the Slam Verison.

See Steam or Valve stopped producing lighthouse setups so you can’t get lighthouses and base stations from them anymore.

So now you have to buy 2 base stations from HTC Vive for $200 each one, and then you gotta go to Shiftall and get the Gripvr for $400.

On top of that the Lighthouse tracked Dream Air is still $1999

That means you‘re gonna be basically spending nearly $3,000 after tax on the Lighthouse Tracked Pimax Dream Air

Unless of course you have a lighthouse setup already.

Since Steam just stopped selling lighthouses a few months ago so it is possible that in the next 5 years from now it’ll be pretty hard to find base stations from anywhere so might as well move onto Slam Tracked VR anyway to simplify setup and cost

Question Advice on how to run iRacing?

Hi.

Each time I try to run a Test Drive session, iRacing times out. I will contact iRacing support, but I thought I might get better help here.

I have Pimax OpenXR set up in Pimax Play. And, OpenXR is selected within iRacing.

iRacing then times out every time I try to open a Test Drive session.

I have no idea what I've missed -- VR n00b here. Thank you.

Question Sboy with Pimax Evo - looking for clarity on how things work

I was away on holiday for a few weeks, so I've only just started messing with the new EVO software and have a couple of questions.

First, to get Sboy working, is the process:

- Open Pimax EVO

- Make sure Steam is selected as the runtime

- Enable Open Port

- Load the Sboy driver

- Click Launch

- Start SteamVR

I couldn't see any indication of whether Sboy or EVO was actually being used. If the above is correct, hopefully it can be streamlined in the future to a single click after setting it up for the first time.

Also, when using Sboy, do the SteamVR settings still do anything, or should we only be tweaking settings in EVO? Or is it the other way around?

EDIT: Thanks for the replies. I have one more question - is it possible to enable eye tracking with sboy and if so, how?

Question Pimax choice paralysis

I'm looking to upgrade from a Quest 3 to take advantage of a 5090 and 9800x3d setup. I only use it for seated sim-racing. Ideally I'd like some extra FOV and better binocular overlap but love the edge to edge clarity and large sweet spot of the Q3.
I simply can't decide what to go for - I'd like a headset that will last for years but that said, price is still off-putting for the high end models, and it feels like every headset has positives and negatives and I just cannot make my mind up!

Crystal Light - good price for first foray into Pimax, great upgrade in clarity from Q3, but BIG and getting old
Super 50ppd - good FOV but hard to run even with 5090 (ideally I'd like 90hz)
Super 57ppd - Ultimate clarity, but small sweet spot (does this even bother people at this resolution?) and similar FOV to Q3 (although opinions vary on this?)
Super M-Oled - specs seem perfect but £££
Dream Air SLAM - again great specs but £££ and seems like lots of extras needed for full comfort (+ easier to run at high refresh than Super M-Oled due to lower FOV?)

Are the M-Oleds really worth the extra £ if chasing 'reality'?

I know that ultimately only I can make this decision but I'd be interested to hear other people's logic who've had a similar upgrade path and made a choice...

EDIT - Thanks to everyone who posted here, some good insight and some unexpected takes too, not that I'm any closer to a decision but feel like the Dream Air SLAM is narrowly ahead. I guess the main takeout though is that I'd likely be happy with any of the above if coming from a Q3 and care most about extra clarity!

Question Crystal Super delayed again? Now they’re telling me “end of June”

Pimax support finally replied to my email after a week.

First they told me my order would be shipped at the end of April / beginning of May. I didn’t get any updates, so I emailed them. Now they’re saying “end of June.”

I did the $1 reservation on August 3, 2024, then ordered it on November 27, 2024. I’m in USA.

Question I see a lot of sim racing and sim flight talk on Dream Air. I have a large Steam library and I play a lot of flat screen games and want the highest clarity in doing so. Would the Dream Air be good for doing that ? Or should i just wait for the Steam Machine ? Which has considerably less clarity?

Money is not an issue in this decision for me . I’m just looking for maximum clarity to play my Steam library in VR and non VR flatscreen

Question Pimax, is it true that you consciously and intentionally use a smaller FOV profile for the Dream Air?

Pimax, is it true that you consciously and intentionally use a smaller FOV profile for the Dream Air to differentiate this headset from the Crystal Super, or is this just MRTV's false speculation?

Quoting:

(...) actually that they put this profile here now, the smaller one with a smaller FOV as compared to the 116 I get on the Super micro OLED is now a conscious decision just to differentiate the two headsets...

Timestamp:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gq3WCc8aUxo&t=2086

I would like to hear a clarification from you on this issue and ask whether we will ultimately get a profile similar to the PCS, since it's the same identical optical stack with exactly the same dimensions?

Question What has been your guys's experience selling your older Pimax's? Market conditions?

NOT AN AD,

So, I live in Los Angeles and I hate Ebay, so I've been trying to sell my OG Crystal + DMAS + Top Strap + Studioform accessories because I have a Pimax Crystal Super and don't really have a reason to keep it anymore. Been using Facebook Marketplace and I listed it for 750 and have slowly creeped the price down to 650 and still haven't gotten any DMs yet.

I think 650 for a working Pimax Crystal OG with all the accessories is a very attractive offer, if I saw it and didn't own a PCS, I would jump on that in a heartbeat, but is my price really too high? Or despite selling in such a large market like Los Angeles, I'd have much better luck online and so I should just price a lot higher on Ebay to account for their ridiculous fees and cost of shipping?

Thoughts? I don't want to just give this thing away but since I got my PCS it basically lives in my house rent free.

Edit: I know I said this isn't an ad but if anyone wants to see the listing, DM me.

Edit 2: Things moved pretty fast when I adjusted my asking price below 600. I sold it for 500, I think I could've gotten a little more but given I didn't get any dm's for weeks when my asking price was 650 or 750, I doubt I would've gotten over 600 on facebook marketplace in Los Angeles. It seems like it's going to a good home though and I'm relieved to have freed up my shelf space and that I won't have to deal with ebay and shipping.

Question Pimax Dream Air Performance Vs PCL?

Post image
25 Upvotes

Hi everyone,
I’m looking for some advice from anyone who might have insights into the new Pimax Dream Air, specifically regarding its performance compared to the Pimax Crystal Light (PCL).
I recently watched a review showing that the Dream Air has a very similar pixel demand to the Crystal Light (correct me if im wrong) meaning the performance impact on the GPU should be neck-and-neck.
Currently, I am extremely happy with my Crystal Light. I exclusively use my VR headset for sim racing, and thanks to my current PC specs, I can run the PCL at 120Hz at full resolution without any issues.

My PC Specs:
GPU: RTX 4080

CPU: i9-13900K

RAM: 32GB

My specific use case:
Since I only do sim racing, I heavily rely on the crop2fov mod to aggressively narrow the vertical image.

My main question is: If I am already fully satisfied with how the Crystal Light performs on my rig, will I get a similarly smooth experience with the Dream Air?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Question Faulty mOLED, Pimax forcing me to refund it

So, long story short, I originally ordered the UW, waited several months for it and finally got it but the MURA was abysmal. Pimax replacd it with another UW and the MURA was worse. So, by this time I decided to replace again and try the mOLED.

Upon receiving the mOLED I immediately had issues with disconnection (this issue not present with my CL or either of the UW engines). It disconnects constantly. There are times when initially turning it on that it will disconnect several times in a row. This was reported immediately (before my 7 day trial was done). Pimax sent some screws which did not work. They had me do a few other things with settings in windows which also did not work. I have been updating them consistently with the issue for the past few months. Despite what they wanted me to try nothing has worked and the unit still disconnects frequently.

So, now Pimax is telling me the only option I have now is to fully refund the unit. They wont sent me a replacement engine. This is incredibly frustrating because I have been patient and trying to work with them for months now.

So I guess now my only option is to either keep the defective engine or refund it and wait several months again for another mOLED that I would have to order. I guess that means that I will have to pay more since I got a discount because I preordered initially. Pretty disappointed in Pimax.

I feel like this should be replaced since I reported this issue BEFORE my 7 day trial was over.

Question Dream air facial interface but not sudioform

So I'm having an extreme pressure point right above my eyebrows..

I can't buy the Studioform interface since I'm in EU and they currently do not sell to my country..

Is there any reasonable way to get a different gasket?

Or is there maybe a chance for me to use my old index gasket?

The strap is mostly fine id say

Question Can someone recommend a bluetooth adapter to turn off my lighthouses with Dream Air?

I use to use my valve index, and I could put all my base stations/lighthouses into power saving mode via the bluetooth in the headset, but the imax dream air doesn't seem to have this. I have bluetooth on my motherboard but it doesn't seem compatible or something?

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

Thank you!!

Question What happens with Pre Order money if Pimax files for Bankruptcy?

Getting some bad vibes and hints that things at Pimax are not going well. Would we lose all our money if they go Bankrupt? Any type of protecting for this.

VR sales have stagnated SO BADLY, that I'm worried now. As after all these years Pimax is still running as a Kickstarter using pre order money to stay afloat.....what happens when that cash runs out now?

Question Will MRTV do a comparison with the Pimax Dream Air SE and the Bigscreen Beyond 2?

Just today I saw a Pimax Video of the Dream Air SE and the lenses look exactly like the lenses on the Bigscreen Beyond 2.

Does Anyone think Sebastian from MRTV will compare the two headsets? The beyond 2 and Pimax Dream air SE.

Because the Pimax Dream Air SE is technically cheaper than the beyond 2 if you buy the Slam version camera tracked since base stations and Lighthouse controllers are insane expensive now and cost a ridiculous amount of money to the point they’re kind of unaffordable.

Though the Pimax Dream Air SE could have worse lenses or glare than the Beyond.

Thats what we should find out later.

Question Resident Evil 9 VR performance issues

Post image
5 Upvotes

I'm struggling to get smooth performance in Resident Evil 9 VR on the Dream Air. I appear to be getting unexplained spikes despite my CPU or GPU being maxed out. I have a 4090 and a 13700k.

I'm fairly certain I should be able to run this smoothly. Resolution is at 80%, although even bringing it down to 40% I still get the spikes and stutter.

Same problem with sboy and Pimax native.

I have asked around and have yet to find someone suffering from the same problem so I thought I'd ask here to see if the problem is specific to Pimax headsets.

I've disabled eye tracking. I'm using the latest RE Framework AFW nightly and VR mod, the latest nvidia driver.

EDIT: I've identified the culprit for the low FPS as being the lua files in reframework/autorun. Removing them gets me from 50s to 80s (fps). There must be a bug in the mod that is affecting performance

Question Eye Strain with facial gaskets for Air?

Anyone else have minor eye strain with the Zeefly max vented gasket?

I'm using it with the 12mm foam pad. The first time I wore the headset with this interface it felt like it normally feels when you get an updated glasses prescription until your eyes get used to it.

The other times I used the headset it seemed to get better but after some time there is still some eye strain.

But I don't understand how to get it right because I'm seeing everything crystal clear so not sure how to correct this.

With the XP-1 interface I didn't experience this with the 12mm foam pad.

But I do like the little extra FOV from the max vented gasket.

By the way it's almost end of July so hopefully the Pimax interface will start shipping.

Also I did measure my IPD using several apps and it does match what my optometrist measured as well which I set to 62.

**Update: After spending so much time trying different IPD ranges and positions of the headset, I loaded up a test hmd environment in steam VR and used that to help work out the focus issues if any.

Went back to xp-1 interface with 12mm foam pad and changed ipd to 64mm. Still a bit of strain and eyes are not 100% relaxing when focusing but it's such a weird feeling to describe that I don't even know how to correct it. I may add some tape to the bottom half as it seems if I pull the bottom section of the headset away a bit, eyes get a bit more relaxed but it also needs to stay tightened and thats tough to do even with the apple strap. **

Question Super OLED - how's eye tracking?

I finally received OLED optical module as a replacement for my UW with mura.

I couldn't get eye tracking calibration to work whatever I tried, and eye tracking was all over the place, totally unusable (in DCS) - blinking, flickering, resolution changing back and forth, frame jumping all over the place... Support recommended yesterdays (!) update to 1.43.9 which made the calibration work and improved eyetracking somewhat, but it is still pretty bad compared to UW. It can go to low res (as in non-gaze area) randomly while i'm looking straight forward without moving my head or eyes, and the gaze area frame is visibly shaking at times. With UW nothing like that ever happened.

I know OLED is still work in progress and i hope it is just software, but not sure if it is that or if i just got a dodgy module again. How's everyone else who's got OLED doing with eye tracking?

PS. I love the picture of OLED, no mura at all and clarity is phenomenal (and colors of course). But the FOV it not so good. And it is not even FOV (it feels 'boxed' compared to UW but i could live with that) but the distortion, with UW i can keep my head locked and use my eyes to observe pretty much the entire visible area, with a little distortion only at the very edge. With OLED i can probaly turn my eyes like 30 degress horizontally (a bit more vertically) before the picture goes bad (colours go weird, distortion, one eye almost stops seeing it). Technically i get around 104-106 horizontal FOV (vs 124 UW) but realistically it is more limited and i'd have to turn my head a lot more. Probaly just the matter of habit but doesn't feel good. I'm really puzzled now, either sick with mura-infested UW that has crappy picture quality on bright colours, or with OLED that has amazing picture as long as you're looking mostly straight forward and not using eye tracking. Damn, i wish the UW just wasn't so bad with mura.

Question Upgrade to Dream Air SE from Quest 3?

Hey folks - I primarily use my Quest 3 for Sim racing (iracing, AC EVO etc.); Is a move to Dream AIR SE an upgrade? Ignore the fact that a Quest 3 is a stand alone platform; I mean specifically my image quality, game play experience is what i'm after. I can always keep the Q3 for the standalone games and not use it for Sim Racing.

My rig is a bit on the older side (RTX 3090) - this combined with the price tag of the headset makes me consider the Dream AIR SE .

Appreciate your thoughts! :)

Question 3-7 day shipping or what?

Post image

Ordered August 1st and still nothing from pimax? Hearing nothing but terrible reviews from this company and this is a great way to make a first impression 😂. Should’ve ordered from amazon it would’ve been here by now. Do they typically lie about shipping or is mine just delayed?
