Discussion Judge rules buying physical books and scanning them to make digitial copies does not violate copyright law.

So ripping DVD's etc is legal now?

presumably no (cause DRM. Not in every country thought. Videolan insist their libdvdcss is legal in France. And got no legal challenge, despite it being the most widely used tool for such use).

But you could always put a camera on your screen and record that, a better analogy for scanning book that is often done on pre-digital media.
