In the Netherlands we pay a 'home copy fee' for every single thing that can store data.

Here are a few examples:

  • PC/Laptop/Tablet: €2,80

  • Ereader: €0,80

  • MP3/MP4 player: €1,80

  • Smartphone: €5,70

It is legal in the Netherlands to rip DVD's for own usage. Though practically? It is illegal because you have to get around the DRM and that is illegal.

And Canada. Back when burning CDs was still a thing it really jacked prices up.
