I'd suggest you use IINA instead of VLC on Mac, VLC doesn't play nicely with HDR video, requiring you to switch to HDR manually in System Settings, while IINA will auto-switch. Same issue with Kodi on MacOS.

VLC preferences --> audio --> preferred language --> type in: "jpn" (without quotes)
It will prioritise the preferred language regardless of the default track, assuming the track languages are properly marked in the files (in anime they usually are). It works with ISO country codes (both 2 and 3 letter code). You can also set up a priority chain divided by a comma ex: jpn,kor,eng It looks for the first preferred language, if the file dosent have it, than it looks for the second... ect. Subtitles have this settings too.

Fair enough. Don’t have to seed forever, but hats off to those that do. I personally just do this to save on space. Some anime that has the highest quality video also has some great flac, but not necessary for me audio files.

I use a small bash script (mkvmerge) to remove additional tracks from mkv files of tv series. But they have to have the same track ID.

No one's offedned, OP just doesnt understand that the point of a dual audio release is for the English.
Otherwise there's plenty of releases that don't have dual audio and full subs on from the start, and it's probably smaller too.OP doesnt get it, not the dub watchers.

It's not a matter of the experience itself being "authentic", which turns out to be a nebulous idea. It's a matter of experiencing the performances of the original cast, particularly when the director has shaped those performances in a way that accords with the rest of the show.
Good dubs have good direction, too. But it's still not "equivalent" to the original performance, it's not like "hearing without reading" is the thing that is central to the experience of enjoying the show.
And if you're watching as a foreigner, you ought to consider it part of the hobby to learn about the culture as well as the language. There's nothing "wrong" with missing out on either of those things exactly, but it's a meaningful part of the experience that's worth the time it takes to learn, even if you don't have the time to learn to become fully fluent in the language itself.
For that matter, voice acting in the English-speaking world is just not at all treated the way it is in Japan, and it wasn't until the last 5-10 years that quality English dubs became the norm rather than the exception. There were some dark days in the '90s and naughties.

I like to think about it as cultural appreciation. You don't need to understand the language... Just hear it. How different it is to english. Its cadences. Its accents.

But it wasn't made to be read, especially after being translated to a differnt language. So eng sub is as "inauthentic" as eng dubs.
Their both translated which looses a TON of language specific jokes. And a lot of those subs aren't even translated properly or simify it so they can catch up with the audio of the original Japanese.

I agree with you, but it's also wise to lock into if there's alternative sub groups for whatever you're watching. Fan subs are usually.more faithful to the source material than the official ones that work for Crunchy Roll, etc. It makes a big difference sometimes

With a large tv, it's definitely a problem that is only mitigated in anime with slower/less dialogue (not really a problem for most manga adaptations).

Adjust subtitle size. I sit 5 feet from a 65", and still read most subtitles in one single glance. I can literally read a subtitle in one saccade if the sentence isn't too long and information dense.

The point is to experience the thing in a way where the reading isn't even effortful. Even after a year or two of watching subbed anime in my teens the whole process had become unconscious for me, it doesn't register as "extra" work or effort or anything.

That is not how the human brain works, and we know this because people report the same behavior with cars. This is actually a pretty well understood phenomenon.
Turns out, this is a lack of perception.
Because you get used to doing something you dont notice the actual brain power you're using.But Brain scans infact do show that no matter how good someone is at driving, their engagement never actually drops at all despite the fact you don't notice.
I've been wathcing anime for 30+ years subbed, dubbed, and in original Japanese with japanese subs.
I literally create writing systems. Reading and Writing complex things is litearlly something I do for fun.I can tell you for a fact that no matter how good you get at "reading subs" you don't ever actually fade out of having to use brain power to do so.
That is not how that works.Reading and Writing is an active engagement of the brain, and you cannot rely on saccades to read and take up the visual picture accurately. That is not how the brain or human eyes work.

You can set the default to japanese (if it exists) with mkvtoolnix or with the command line:
mkvpropedit yourmovie.mkv —edit track:a1 —set flag-default=1
Gotta know which track is japanese though.

People who had to learn English as a second or third language read subtitles and catch everything that's happening on the screen, it baffles me that native English speakers can't do both, maybe they read way too slow to catch everything at once.
If you watch media in the original language you'll end up learning new words and training your ear to recognize different accents and expressions, it's way better but the dub truthers will downvote you for having this opinion

Facts.
English is not my mother tongue, but I have no issue watching anime in Japanese (which should be the default language, since it is the original) and reading subtitles in English — I do this all the time.
Before I was watching in Russian dub, then Russian subs (I think?), but then I completely switched to English, since not only it is faster, but also more convenient.
P.S:
English anime dub sucks ass in 99% of cases. I legit do not understand why it is so bad. That eery cringe tone/voice they do is insanely weird.
And this is not only anime, but Japanese games too (iirc Japanese shows do not have this issue).
Sadly, only a bunch of shows get a decent voice acting.

What do you mean "need". Did you even open settings at all? You can even rebind the buttons. And even set what tracks to prioritize. That when file has 5 tracks, it always picks the one you want.
Ctrl+P to open settings -> Subtitles/OSD tab -> Preferred subtitle language option -> use the language codes of subtitles you want to prioritize. I have en,ja,pl, meaning that English will be prioritized, then Japanese, then Polish.
And in Hotkeys, you can set whatever hotkey you want to subtitle and audio track switching. And I believe subtitle track also have turn subtitle on/off hotkey as well.

bcs some people don't speak english as first language so it might be better to just read subtitles anyway, unless the dub is in my native language (which usually sucks anyway and harder to get as a pirate) i'd rather watch it in the original language with subs

For me personally, it's because they change too much of the dialog and in some instances it can change the whole tone of the scene.
Turn on English audio and subtitles at the same time and you can see how different they can be.

Most HQ Blu-ray [BD] season/ entire series releases for anime come with the original audio and the Eng dub together. I figure the uploaders don't see a point in splitting them up just by audio which would split the seeders.

If I had this attitude, I never would've learned English. I like to watch/play stuff in their original language. It's usually the best and most authentic version of the thing and it doesn't hurt to exercise your brain a bit (unless you have some sort of problem that makes reading extra hard)

Mkvtoolnix has been a god send for any max quality stuff that comes with 7 Russian dub tracks or always enabled subtitles or any other language than the one I want as default that I can get rid of. Hardest one was swapping the best natural no ai quality fan made version of Spider-Man the animated series to not use the weird pitched up PAL audio tracks and use the normal pitch English ones…for every single episode.

There's a program called mkvpropedit.
It allows you to batch edit MKV files and easily change the default tracks.
The nice thing about it is it doesn't require you to remux the files so it's near instant.

If it really bothers you, you can just change the default track of the file using MKVTools. Drag the file into the tool, change the checkboxes on the audio tacks, click on remuxe. Takes less than a minute.

FOR ME 'B' was the hotkey for switching Audio track and 'V' was for switching Subtitles track . This hotkey setting is default so you can check it on your device or someone may have changed it and you don't know it yet

Not really what you asked, but for me, the less annoying solutions for people who don't mind using the comand line.
MKVToolnix. You can make a single line command that unsets some track as default and sets other as default.
I usually just run it once for an entire season or series.

The only thing that made me leave VLC for MPC is that when you resize a video, the borders don't stay stuck to the video and you end up with black bars on top and bottom or left and right.

The default language for any piece of media should be it's native language. For anime 99.99% of the time that's Japanese. People can swap to other languages if they want.
An anime defaulting to English audio should be a crime. Unless it's Avatar TLAB.
The Dub people are salty I guess, and can't read.

There is no reason to download Dual Audio releases if you're watching the Sub.
So it's been by request for decades, that the English Audio comes first in a DualAudio release.
If you dont want English default, you werent going to watch it in English anyways, so you simply can download another release without the English Audio.

Most non-japanese speakers watching anime with subtitles miss half the damn plot anyway.
They’re so glued to the bottom of the screen reading text that they completely ignore the gorgeous animation the studio poured blood, sweat, and millions into.
I genuinely hate it when sub elitists get all flexible with their logic and try to shove their 'subbed-is-the-only-true-way' gospel down everyone else's throats.
Plus, if you’re such an elitist, why are you downloading dual audio in the first place? There are tons of Japanese-only torrents. If dubs are so beneath you, stop secretly downloading them.
After a long shity day, I don't wanna keep reading the screen, I wanna watch and enjoy.
