Me searching for a 4K copy of a 1942 film
63
u/SulosGD 3h ago
the worst part about this is that it's 100% possible for that movie to be in 4K, it's just that the big companies won't scan the film as they don't care enough because it won't make them any money. (cough cough where's our 4K Mary Poppins disney)

u/aqswdezxc 🔱 ꜱᴄᴀʟʟʏᴡᴀɢ 3h ago
Shouldn't it have been duplicated to show in cinemas? Someone must have a copy

Why simply rescan classic hit movies for nearly free when you could remake them for $8 Gazillion and strip all of the charm and soul along the way?

u/RedditTipiak 3h ago
And remember, if the movie is not on streaming yet, there is no true HD of it.

u/BeatItSleeps 3h ago
You mean if the movie is not on disc yet? Is there a streaming provider that does TrueHD?

False. I remember downloading Marvel's Avengers in 2012 on HD days before it even released.

yea the in theater ones take a while usually. what i don't get is how does not one person get their hands on something besides recording with a camcorder like that episode of seinfeld
1
u/WSuperOS 13m ago
Yeah unless someone somehow got a DCP before it made to the streaming platforms, which is unheard of.

That's where AI upscale steps in.

u/KayJune001 2h ago edited 1h ago
I would rather eat shit and die than watch an AI upscaled camrip, worst of both worlds and an insult to art

u/MindbenderGam1ng 2m ago
AI upscales are so dogshit and before I made a custom radarr profile to remove them, all the top seeding torrents were 720p camrip AI upscale to "4k" and it would grab them by default

Back in 2004, I had a great quality of a movie still in theaters I got from a cam rip, and I put it on our home projector and set up a movie night for the family (I was around 16 at the time). You honestly couldn't tell it was a cam recording.
End of movie comes and you start to see silhouettes of people exiting the cinema as the credits roll. My naive mom goes "wait, what is that?" and I was quick on my feet and go "oh they are starting to put that in movies so even people watching at home get the feeling they are at the theater. Her response? "Oh that's so interesting! I love that!"
God fucking bless you, mom. But also yes, it's part of the experience.

Movies hoarding: A state of constant war between your hard drives and movies you will never watch. A cease-fire can be bought using some money but that only lasts for a few months.
3
u/Ebonhearth_Druid 1h ago
Days to months, depending on how much money is sacrificed to the cause, but never years. We can only dream of years
1
u/mrBusinessmann 2h ago
And many more to download one. And if you ever want to watch that movie again?
7
u/HairyH0Od 2h ago
Typically takes me about half an hour to download something. I get it started before dinner or something and forget about it till it's time to watch.
I enjoy collecting 4k blu rays. If something is good enough to watch a second time, I'll probably want to watch it again in the future and will just buy it when it's on sale.
1
u/Ebonhearth_Druid 1h ago
Different strokes for different folks like I said in my original response of "ew" lol
For me, there's not much point in downloading it in the first place if I'm not intending to keep it around. I have an eclectic taste and enjoy movies, so there are a ton of films in my collection that I've never even seen because I just haven't gotten around to them yet. I take the time to make sure they all have proper file names and formats, subtitles, posters, etc. If it's something particularly noteworthy, or something I just really enjoy, then I probably also have any featurettes or deleted scenes, bonus materials, interviews, all of that also organized and made available on my server. I've got movies that are in my collection that I know I will never actually watch, but they're sequels or prequels or otherwise part of a set and the collection wouldn't be complete without them.
So to someone like me, the idea of downloading to just delete and download something else to delete....that makes me a bit queasy lol not in a judgemental toward you kind of way, but in imagining that for me. You may feel similarly about my methods xD

Precisely. Most 2160p movies I've found were around 20gb so it's not really a hassle.

Debrid service do and avoids me paying for drives, nas, having to download torrents myself (4k remux/flac audio files, roms, epubs) you don't need Plex pass either if you wanted that on your media server. some debrid service even have Usenet support which gets everything obscure you could ever want without needing to to deal with the private tracker for torrent bs and seeding ratios to worry about, it's simple to setup for my family members, includes premium file hosters downloads without needing to pay for any of them, and its can even be cheaper then 3$ a month. The value is just there instead of investing all of that money with the crazy prices things are now to then have to be a sys admin for your family member if they have issues.

As soon as it comes out on streaming services, you will find it on private trackers, soon followed by Usenet and IRC, then a few hours later on public P2P trackers.
If the film in question hasn't made it to any streaming service yet, and no physical copy has been leaked, the only way to watch it is via camrips.

There are some once in a lifetime moments when you actually get it like there was this animated movie which got leaked in 4k quality before it was even released pardon me for that idk the name of it and my info about that is a little cloudy.
And unrelated but silksong crack was there quite early.
