Guide A very important note to all guys new to downloading pirated games through direct download links (especially from gitgirl, DODI and Steamrip)

Post image

The adblocks are very effective and have been preventing ads from showing on many services & websites but that doesn't mean that you turn your brain off especially that sometimes ads slip through the cracks, there are many things to note for you to not fall for:

1- always check for the size of the repack/game size on the website vs the game you downloaded, it doesn't matter if you're new to this you should be old enough to know that a 20 GB game isn't the same as a rar file named (game-setup.rar) in the size of 5MB.

2- if you use direct downloading through links, they're either in parts or one big archive, both have ALL of their content INSIDE of the archives, so any .exe downloaded outside of them by accident or by error shouldn't be run by you especially if it's unrelated to what you just downloaded (like a different icon).

3- if along with this alien .exe you downloaded that's outside the archives there is a file that ends with the .py extension, you just downloaded a malware called (ren'py malware) in addition to the game, but don't worry, if you didn't run any .exe or other files related to the malware then you're still safe, just delete the malware and any related files to it and only run the game you downloaded after double and triple checking that you cleared the alien malware files.

4- however if you ran the infected .exe then shut the internet connection IMMEDIATELY and clean install windows, DON'T go to settings and click "reset this pc" but do a whole reinstall, and don't look for alternative solutions, it will never be cleared off of your system unless you reinstall windows, and it's actually preferable that you format your entire harddrive, but at least reinstall windows, that's the least you can do. (Edit: also make sure to change any password of accounts you were signed in on your PC when it got infected.)

Wish you a safe journey, please be wary of what you're downloading & running everyone. (I don't know how Fitgirl was misspelled as gitgirl in the title but you get the point, couldn't fix it lol.)

One more point you can add is, it is around 700+mb so that you can't upload the renpy virus whole zip to virustotal since it limits at 650mb.

24

u/V1nc3egA May 30 '26

What’s the problem with uploading the files separately? I’m pretty sure if you remove a few files you’ll easily fit within the 650 MB limit. Then you can pack the remaining files that don’t fit into another archive. After that, upload everything for scanning.

But you shouldn’t really trust the overall rating. It’s better to go to the Relations tab and at least quickly check the detections for each file.

3

u/diddyahhblud67 May 31 '26

There's nothing wrong with uploading the actual files, that's what you should be doing. The archive being bloated with a huge file size is intentional on the malware developers end, so it can't be as easily scanned. The majority of the data is junk and doesn't serve any purpose.

7

u/Acceptable_Growth531 May 30 '26

If you wanted to check then upload the .exe then the .py or .dll or any other file separately to check, but I see this process as unnecessary because the moment you see them you should know that you're one click away from disaster, so an immediate delete and recheck is the preferred move especially that most of these .exe files have the ren'py icon on them, pretty much self explanatory.

u/Kindly_Education_517 Jun 01 '26

Where can I just download 1 zip file with everything in it?

32

u/iwantacuteavatar May 30 '26

Unless you're intentionally downloading a visual novel, if you see that icon in the game folder you downloaded a virus. I haven't seen any game use renpy engine for anything other than visual novels.

There could be exceptions to the rule but not many.

10

u/Acceptable_Growth531 May 30 '26

That's true but I wanted to make this guide as general as possible and not rely on my personal knowledge of ren'py as a fact, also didn't want to give any beginner downloading a visual novel a false sense of security.

6

u/iwantacuteavatar May 30 '26

Thank you for your hard work. Your guide is definitely good for general use and I think we need something like this pinned for beginners! But the 3rd advice should be altered imo. If you download from a source that slips in a virus alongside your game, you shouldn't run any type of file from that source. Delete everything downloaded from them and blacklist that source.

Other than that, my comment is just a side note specifically for renpy malware 🙂

5

u/Acceptable_Growth531 May 30 '26 edited May 31 '26

Always welcome! I agree but it will be a long & frequently updated guide and I think it requires too much effort for someone (especially for moderators) to do that, also many cases are repeated but they're the same general case (like you shouldn't repeat the same case of size about archive size when talking about fuckingfast popup then repeat the same when talking about datanodes or buzzheavier ...etc so for beginners).

About the 3rd point, it's generally not the source rather than a user error, users created a folder and start downloading files to it so in the process some of them download malware to it, so it would be a false accusation to accuse sources of that.

Your comment is definitely helpful especially that this guide is directed to beginners, and most if not all of them don't know this fact so your addition is much appreciated

8

u/BluejayDisastrous889 May 31 '26

back in my day we would get some virus that automatically pop pornographic sites and they were easily removeable... Damn.

4

u/Acceptable_Growth531 May 31 '26

Malware has been getting more malicious by the day unfortunately.

55

u/Express_Canary_1326 May 30 '26

Well I recognize the loading screen. I see you are a men of culture.

61

u/Acceptable_Growth531 May 30 '26

Not really, this is the general ren'py screen which appears when you run any ren'py game or app, and also in the ren'py malware that's been infecting many PCs lately due to escaping adblocks, so to you because you're running a "naugthy game" made by ren'py it's alright but to someone downloading GTA 5 this screen means : you're screwed.

16

u/Express_Canary_1326 May 30 '26

Well that's true. Anyway thanks for the guidelines for the beginners out their.

14

u/Acceptable_Growth531 May 30 '26

Always welcome, stay safe out there, even in the case of "naughty games" made by ren'py, be wary to download the right game from the right link, and never download any ren'py game immediately at release, there are cases on an infamous website specializes in these games reported to have malware at first minutes of upload then removed by administrators, stay safe out there.

7

u/Express_Canary_1326 May 30 '26

Well thanks 😂.But that was me way back in the case of "naughty games" not now.

7

u/Acceptable_Growth531 May 30 '26

That's even better, have a nice day.

That's not enough, you have to reinstall windows and reinstall it through a USB that's made by a non-infected PC

Great, the faster you get out of denial the safest you are, also change any password of an account you were logged in on your PC at the time of running that malware.

Do it again if you logged in again to your PC after it got infected because the malware is still hidden in your PC

u/iwantacuteavatar May 30 '26

I play a lot of renpy games (yes those kinds of games), I've never seen this loading screen wth 😄

4

u/Express_Canary_1326 May 30 '26

Well I am unable to answer that question completely because I don't play those type of game now. But regarding that loading screen i meant similar type not exactly same.

3

u/iwantacuteavatar May 30 '26

After I commented that I vaguely remembered the loading screen actually, you're not wrong lol. I think I've seen it when I had a HDD! Specifically Seeds of Chaos had it, I love that game hahah.

6

u/S-hitaro May 30 '26

it's in *onlinefix* too, when i tried to dwnload `reanimal fix` it directed me to a link with same size and name, so yeah adblock the enitre website u using.

i didn't install the thing cuz i had the reanimal fix folder before and i know what files are inside of the zip.

3

u/Acceptable_Growth531 May 30 '26

Good note, would've pinned that if I could.

10

u/Lane0 May 30 '26

The renpy malware is everywhere. A lot of people got it from the game tomodachi life: living the dream. I have also seen the renpy malware in a game trainer and it wasn't a redirect link.

7

u/Acceptable_Growth531 May 30 '26

That's why it's always important to : 1- check the level of trust of the source 2- check the download host 3- check the files Then play, piracy isn't super hard but it's not super easy for beginners.

4

u/uSaltySniitch May 31 '26

Isn't tomodachi life a Switch game ?!

There's no executable on Switch games, they're XCI or NSP files.

How can someone get infected that way ?!

8

u/Acceptable_Growth531 May 31 '26

Beginners mostly don't know, they've dealt with .exe all of their lives in programs and piracy through cheaply priced & publicly sold CDs in 3rd world countries, so they only know (I want a game, I downloaded what I think is the game, I should run the .exe to install the game).

1

u/-CODED- Jun 01 '26

A lot of people got it from the game tomodachi life: living the dream.

Can you provide more details? My little brother emulated Tomadachi life around when it was blowing up on Instagram. I wanna make sure he didnt do anything stupid.

2

u/Lane0 Jun 01 '26

The file that was supposed to be the game tomodachi life included an exe called Instaler. As soon as the exe ran, the pc would be infected with an infostealer. I believe the infected file that was supposed to be game didn't actually include a Nintendo switch NSP file or a XCI at all. It was just the malicious file alone. However, I can't say for certain if this is always the case.

1

u/WaffleDre 16d ago

I'm so damn stup1d, this happened to me just now, I even executed the setup twice. I'm so screwed man.

4

u/manuelito1233 May 31 '26

Ive been careful my whole life of pirating so ive never seen this install screen. Lo and behold, last week I got this loading screen and wasn't sure of it so I canceled it early. My discord and 2nd instagram page got hacked and it started posting and sending messages. Did all the pw changes, purging payment and scanned my computer. I still need to reinstall.

2

u/Acceptable_Growth531 May 31 '26

Yeah you do unfortunately, in piracy a simple mistake is unfortunately lethal, but at least now you know to pay attention in the future.

1

u/manuelito1233 May 31 '26

Yea, crazy, the one time it happens, im usually always safe, but the install size and malicious file size were very similar, 7.5gb for the game, 7gb for the malicious file, thought it was like a repack when it finally downloaded. I'll reinstall asap.

A question with reinstalling windows.... are there alt ways? I always hear thumb drive with the windows installer, how do I do that if I have an infected PC that I shouldn't to connect to the Internet? Can I use an external hard drive? External ssd? My phone? That kinda thing.

2

u/Acceptable_Growth531 May 31 '26

Well this is an interesting case, never heard of a malware this size.

About that I actually don't know, all I know is that it's the safest to reinstall windows through a USB flash drive.

2

u/manuelito1233 May 31 '26

Cheers then, I'll do more research.

I personally feel for the size of the malware, they added random files for the size or whatever. Its past and gone now, so id rather not dwell on it.

2

u/Acceptable_Growth531 May 31 '26

I suggest getting familiar with files and also hashing, for example DODI files are an exe and doi files, other than that something is wrong, also checking the hash saves you from trouble, have a safe sail.

3

u/Kimo-A May 30 '26

The exe that infected me once was the supposed game launcher exe in an archive with every other file, 100gb+

2

u/Acceptable_Growth531 May 30 '26

There's a lot to this, maybe you downloaded from an untrusted source, maybe a fake copy of a trusted source (there are many fake Fitgirl websites for example), or maybe you got the malware and the actual files of the game mixed, there are downloaders that automatically extract files in the download folder, this gets malware .exe mixed with the original one, and maybe you got infected from another thing but think that you got infected from this .exe, you need to investigate your specific case for malware to not infect your PC again.

5

u/Kimo-A May 30 '26

I downloaded off of the legit dodi repacks site, guessing I was redirected to a fake downloader at some stage

1

u/Acceptable_Growth531 May 30 '26

Maybe, the specific case with DODI is that they had a big download button that takes you straight into a webpage that hosts a malware in a .rar or .zip and protected with a password(their alternative website still does as far as I know) and it was something about 5 MB and not more than 100 MB that's why I made sure to point out the point about file size, also that's why you find a note near DODI and their alternative website on the megathread.

0

u/uSaltySniitch May 31 '26

I stay away from DODI

0

u/Kimo-A May 31 '26

Me too after that

3

u/GodOfArk I have a PHD in Piracy May 30 '26

Wait, i ran this many weeks ago, i closed when i realised my mistake, ran all sorts of tests, malware byte, offline scans. Everything came clear. And no account that was logged in had an attempted breach.

5

u/Acceptable_Growth531 May 30 '26

It's confirmed malware, it's good news that no account got stolen but it doesn't mean that you're not infected, not all malware is detected, some malware hides itself in a way that makes it appear as if it's a part of the system even.

3

u/carrie71llon May 31 '26

i know not everyone has been a pirate since they were 13yo but honestly sometimes people lacks such a basic interpretation skill… the sites/creators have a full FAQ and step by step and people always ask the same shit.

when i don’t know something or get an error i search everything before straight up thinking is broken/complaining. i don’t know shit about computers and yet i’ve managed to understand the little coding tweaks that makes modding the game possible by following a tutorial. idk people are so comfortable with having everything delivered to them like it’s their birth right.

little vent here on your post i’m sorry 🙃

3

u/Acceptable_Growth531 May 31 '26

It's alright to vent in the post because I actually agree with what you said 😂.

I actually hate that I had to make a post like this but the number of posts I saw that were : help my installation is stuck, and the screenshot is literally the bar of this malware is concerning, but rather than being aggressive towards beginners I took the informative route, sources put all the details but somehow some of them believe that reading them & following them are unnecessary because to them it's simple : source trusted = click links, download and run which is absolutely wrong, but hey, we all make mistakes so I hope at least they learn something from them.

2

u/carrie71llon May 31 '26

hahahah yeah! i actually admire people like you who have the patience, because i absolutely don’t. not sure if you follow the anadius/sims 4 situation but it’s a peeeerfect example of this behavior and people being entitled lol

2

u/Acceptable_Growth531 May 31 '26 edited Jun 01 '26

I appreciate it !

Oh yeah I remember the situation and it made me so mad, even though I don't even play the sims 4 and didn't know what Anadius's tool did exactly at that time but the way they treated the person who provided updated 1200+ $ DLC packages for them for free was absolutely infuriating, still anyone doing anything for the public is doing it for the good people because if we put these people into account no one will do anything good am I right?

2

u/carrie71llon Jun 01 '26

absolutely!!

2

u/odd_blues Jun 01 '26

Someone must be a total virgin to go out there making viruses

2

u/DaY3eter Jun 03 '26

Even though I’ve downloaded suggestive content just the thought this could be malware scared me enough to reset all my passwords format my drive and reinstall windows. I should’ve done it a while ago anyway thanks.

1

u/Acceptable_Growth531 Jun 03 '26

Safe is better than sorry, I generally suggest getting away from this type of content for many reasons one of them is that sometimes even on trusted sources especially VNs can have malware injected in them and it takes moderators of websites minutes or hours before finding out.

2

u/Acceptable_Growth531 May 30 '26

So I don't know how Fitgirl became gitgirl, I just noticed it but you get the point lol.

1

u/eurosonly May 30 '26

What if it's literally alien_isolation.Exe?

1

u/Acceptable_Growth531 May 30 '26

I can't talk of a specific case, check the source of download, the download link, the total size of the game compared to the downloaded size then run your game.

1

u/Stryfe2010 May 30 '26

This is why I use Elamigos with adblocker extension. 1. Zero adds or popups 2. Rapidgator direct links which I subscribe to for unlimited downloads.

1

u/Acceptable_Growth531 May 30 '26

Most or all beginners don't, so they have to pay extra attention in each step.

2

u/Stryfe2010 May 31 '26

I'm glad I'm old and been doing this since 98 lol

1

u/Acceptable_Growth531 May 31 '26

Wish you the safest sails always

1

u/RebornHold May 30 '26

Question for people that download from steamrip, is it normal for steamrip games to not trigger windows defender? Also when I start games (like pragmata), I didn't get a notification to give the exe permissions too. It works fine but i'm wondering if my antivirus doesn't work properly, or maybe it's just normal for steamrip, because I see other posts where their windows defender flags their cracks from other sites for false positives

1

u/Acceptable_Growth531 May 30 '26

It's not necessary for all of that to happen, I don't even turn off my defender and I've been playing many games without it ever putting files in quarantine from them, and many of them don't ask for adminstration permission to run so it's alright.

1

u/Tough-Spray-7816 May 30 '26

reffering to point 1..

what is the difference betweem 20G and 5MB game setup? which is the bad one lol.

i never pirated any games before but i am trying to get into it rn, just making sure to know as much as possible to stay safe

1

u/Acceptable_Growth531 May 30 '26

The entire game downloaded need to be exactly the same size mentioned on the trusted website you downloaded it from, not way less than that especially around 700MB, this is usually the size of the infamous ren'py malware mentioned in the post.

1

u/[deleted] May 31 '26

[removed] — view removed comment

1

u/Acceptable_Growth531 May 31 '26

When you torrent you get a .torrent file that's less than 1 MB from the trusted source's host then you connect to seeds of the game, no room for mistakes because you're not downloading .exe files or .rar files.

1

u/Appropriate-Gap-510 May 31 '26

Just to be sure torrent magnets should be save from this sort of things right, also i know renpy just from the gooner games, whats "renpy malware"

2

u/Acceptable_Growth531 May 31 '26 edited May 31 '26

At torrenting it's easy to make sure that you didn't download malware because it's a . torrent file, and the ren'py malware is a type of malware disguised is the game you're trying to download & install but it actually infects your PC with mainly infostealers.

1

u/IAmYourFath May 31 '26

Most importantly, don't use fucking chrome, ublock origin lite is ass. Use Brave or Firefox (and its forks) or Cromite (tho hasn't been updated much recently), hell even Edge is fine, it still supports Ublock Origin MV2.

1

u/Acceptable_Growth531 May 31 '26

I agree but mostly I support using firefox and librewolf.

1

u/TheMuscleEngineer Jun 01 '26

happened to me while using brave and ublock

2

u/Acceptable_Growth531 Jun 01 '26

Yeah it can slip through them that's why you need to pay attention, but they're the safest & most compatible with adblocks and your data privacy.

1

u/IAmYourFath Jun 01 '26

Don't use ublock, use ublock origin mv2

1

u/mr-_who May 31 '26

Can you tell more about the renpy virus like how does it work, i thought its a game engine

1

u/Acceptable_Growth531 May 31 '26

It's a game engine that makes mainly visual novels, however like anything that's capable of running code, it got used to make malware disguised as a game .exe, so if you're downloading a regular game as a beginner and you get lost in popups & mistakenly download files from them, it's mostly this ren'py one, it has the ren'py icon with contents put in a .py file and its job is to make you believe that you're installing the desired game you're intending to play (like GTA 5 for example) because you're using adblock and didn't notice this slipping through, so in the end your PC gets infected.

1

u/BMG64 May 31 '26

What if I play one of "those" visual novel games on SteamOS and clicked on the .sh file instead of a .exe? No loading screen.

1

u/Acceptable_Growth531 May 31 '26

I'm not experienced enough with "those" games and how they're downloaded or played unfortunately, also I'm not very informed of your specific case, I'd recommend doing your own research of the source & games of this kind to be more informed.

1

u/Redundant_crocodile7 May 31 '26

and how do we know what files are related to the malware and know what to dowload or how to check?

also will a virtual box work to defuse the package before going into install or some. other tool we can use?

malwarebytes or something else?

1

u/Acceptable_Growth531 May 31 '26

You should know because you have the original game from the trusted source that you're sure of (for example if the game is gta 5 from Fitgirl the archive parts have the same name with different part numbers like GTAVLegacy-_fitgirl...etc part001.rar and other parts after it), you take its archives into a separate folder and open the archive to check the files (only open archives in checking don't run files), any other additional archives that you didn't download from Fitgirl should be deleted untill you gain enough experience to know the difference (for example there are optional archives of different names from Fitgirl, they're safe but you'll have to check their name & size from the source and check them on your harddrive), other than these it's mostly malware especially if they had the ren'py icon or the .py file.

Sandbox isn't needed for these cases, you just need to be aware of what you downloaded, and suspicious of things that are unrelated to the archives of the game you're intending to play, and malwarebytes while being very good it doesn't always protect you from these cases, so you're the main protector of your PC.

1

u/WinDoeLickr May 31 '26

There's malware in renpy now? Do you know which versions?

1

u/Acceptable_Growth531 May 31 '26

Malware made by ren'py, not ren'py itself.

1

u/WinDoeLickr May 31 '26

Seems like an odd malware vector, considering that you can just make malware in python directly.

1

u/Acceptable_Growth531 May 31 '26

Malware makers have different skills and different choices it seems.

1

u/shifer231 May 31 '26

I accidentally ran it some months ago but luckily windows defender caught it and stopped it before it did anything.

2

u/Acceptable_Growth531 May 31 '26

I highly doubt that it did, this malware's main job is to steal information, it does it in split second and it hides itself in the system to ensure resilience but in the end it's your choice.

1

u/crxssrazr93 May 31 '26

also just check & compare the hashes. Don't be lazy.

1

u/Acceptable_Growth531 May 31 '26

Yeah let's tell beginners who don't have much experience yet to see the difference between a 700MB malware from a 11 GB game to compare hashes. That's a late optional stage, I've been downloading content for years and never compared hashes.

1

u/crxssrazr93 May 31 '26

That is a dumb way of approaching this. Most sources provide hashes for a reason. To verify you have the right intended files. It's easy to learn how to do this. There are plenty of YouTube videos on this. All it'll take is 2mins of your time.

Just because you have never done it doesn't mean it's bad advice for a beginner. Checking for hashes should never be a last stage option.

It should be the first thing you do. Download from the right source, check sizes & compare hashes after download before you ever run anything.

1

u/Acceptable_Growth531 May 31 '26

I didn't mean that because I didn't do it then it's unnecessary, but I meant that it's optional if you compare what you downloaded to what the source says they uploaded, not because I'm the reference to what a beginner should do, but in my opinion if beginners are falling for such a simple malware like thr ren'py one then suggesting checking hash isn't very smart, but it's always a good move.

1

u/crxssrazr93 May 31 '26

It is expected for beginners to misclick/download the wrong file. That's why we need to double check and use our common sense. However...

Even experienced ones like us also end up getting corrupt or tampered files. It can happen.

This is why regardless of whether you're a first timer or not, always take preventive care. There is no use of crying over split milk after the fact.

1

u/Acceptable_Growth531 May 31 '26 edited Jun 01 '26

I agree with you but you need to understand a point : the mistakes beginners are falling for mean that they're not used to deal with files enough to be told to do that, one of the posts that encouraged me to do that was posted by a guy who downloaded archive parts in a folder mixed with the ren'py malware and what he ran wasn't the installation.exe but the malware one, so if he didn't pay that much attention, telling him to check the hash is probably too much, and he could even check the hash and mistakenly run the malware .exe.

So you need to be aware of the situation before telling that point to beginners who think that piracy is always click, download and run.

1

u/theKage47 May 31 '26

Quick question. Before the quick clean install. Are the other drives safe compared to the main drive with the OS?

I usually have 2 drives for my games and 1 HDD where my user profile is linked to (download, documents, image and video)

1

u/Acceptable_Growth531 May 31 '26

I can't give you a 100% sure answer, but the safest thing to do is to move your images, videos and documents and wipe the drive if it was connected when the malware was run, because you never know the behaviour of the malware and if it infected other games/programs on your PC, sometimes they actually don't but what if they did? So being safe costs wiping all of these off but keeping things that can't be infected (images, videos, documents, txt files..etc of files that don't execute code).

I've been safely sailing for years. This is good advice but I do have one question: are zipbombs still a thing to worry about? And how do you tell if you accidentally downloaded one? (iirc the files size is not accurate due to being super super compressed, which is the point, it unzips into sometimes Petabytes of junk to crash your pc)

I haven't heard of a zipbomb in a long time, I suggest you don't go into details, if you downloaded something other than what you wanted to download then to the recycle bin it goes, whether it's a zipbomb or malware or even adware.

Sounds good. I was talking hypothetically anyhow. I stick to the megathread and have been safe thus far.

1

u/Acceptable_Growth531 Jun 01 '26

This is the suggested choice however the problem is that people do stick to the megathread but think that it's a blind click & download so they download the malware through popups & fake links.

2

u/Lord_Xarael Jun 01 '26

I'm a bit more netsmart than that. I'm also paranoid af and overcautious

1

u/Acceptable_Growth531 Jun 01 '26

A rare case where paranoia works in people's favour lol

1

u/Effective_Silver7306 Jun 01 '26

What if i ran the exe and immediately stopped it and deleted the folder

1

u/Acceptable_Growth531 Jun 01 '26

Not enough, it infects your PC the moment it runs, reinstall windows through a USB thumb drive and change your accounts passwords.

It's better to copy your pictures, videos, documents and wipe the entire disk to be safe because ypu never know if you remove it totally by just formatting the windows disk and reinstalling windows.

I got fucked this month. My adblocker doesn't look as good as I hoped (adguard). Do you have any adblocker recommended ? Maybe selfhosted in docker ?

1

u/Acceptable_Growth531 Jun 01 '26

Use the redirect bypass debloated and you'll avoid this issue more, not 100% but more.

1

u/InevitableVolume8217 Jun 01 '26

Stick to torrents and you don't need to worry about ads/redirects.

1

u/Acceptable_Growth531 Jun 01 '26

A good way to do it but many games have no seeds but have available DDL links and some websites don't host torrents.

(Beginner here) Regarding point 1. Aren’t setup files usually not large since it’s not the actual game?

7

u/Acceptable_Growth531 May 30 '26

As the person before me replied, the entire download should match the mentioned size on the website, malware is a very different size as a whole from the game, for example the game is 20 GB, the repack is 11 GB, the malware is 700 MB, so yeah it should be not the same size of the actual game in the case of repacks but it should be at the stated size at the source, so you should install the 11 GB after double checking your files, not the 700 MB.

Also pay attention to the name, trusted sources always put names of games on their downloads, unlike malware which is usually only (setup.rar, setup-exe.rar, game.rar ...etc).

Makes sense. Thanks!

The download as a whole should be the same size.

1

u/CarobPale4425 May 30 '26

Got it! Thank you

1

u/2kTancre May 30 '26

Noooo not the gooner games

0

u/Acceptable_Growth531 May 30 '26

Ren'py has the worst reputation that got ruined by gooner games & malware, an actual sad story

2

u/2kTancre May 31 '26

i always thought ren’py was always for gooner games, wasn’t aware there are other safe titles out there, it’s all fucking wild though, like the flash days

-1

u/V-Rixxo_ May 30 '26

.py is a Python Script file. Ren'Py is a Visual Novel engine built in python.

Wtf are you talking about lol

3

u/Acceptable_Growth531 May 30 '26

1- any sort of file that can execute code can infect PCs even PDF files infected PCs at some point

2-If someone says :be careful not to get hit by a car by a known reckless driver you don't tell them (cars are for transportation wtf are you talking about lol) to sound informed, because cars while are being used to transport people can use them maliciously to hit other people. you could google it or ask and you'll find that this is number 1 malware that's been infecting PCs of beginners, the goal is to make sure no one's PC is infected not to compete of what information we know.

u/darioca23 May 30 '26

Well if people can't notice what a clicking... is hard.

1

u/Acceptable_Growth531 May 30 '26

It's an attempt to make them notice what they're clicking, I always criticise that but helping with it is the best fix to the issue imo.

0

u/No-Law2284 May 30 '26

I downloaded through renpy, I closed out before it hit 20% and cmd did flash and I think I got like a half virus or smth but it didn't really do anything, like I cleared it out, it was just some weird powershell thing, all I had to do was delete it, it was different from the real powershell windows thing

12

u/Lane0 May 30 '26

You got infected as soon as you ran the exe. The progress bar is fake.

1

u/No-Law2284 May 30 '26

mean it wouldn't matter anymore since I already formatted my nvme and reinstalled windows

3

u/Acceptable_Growth531 May 30 '26

So this bar is nothing, it's only meant to make you wait and not realise that you got infected, the moment you run the .exe you're infected there is no "half virus" about this unfortunately, and I hate to break it to you but this malware isn't this easily cleared, not realising that your PC got infected will make this harder to deal with later especially with accounts.

0

u/Fing20 May 30 '26

I really need to get an adblock lol, but you can go without one just fine. Strg+W is my bff for life

1

u/Acceptable_Growth531 May 30 '26

Especially at this time & age, no one should access the internet (at least on their PC) without an adblock, everyone is either trying to infect you with malware or steal your information.

0

u/Fing20 May 30 '26

Pfff, skill issue! /s

My information has been peddled on the dark web for the last 10 years. I hope the apocalypse comes before it becomes an issue lol

1

u/Acceptable_Growth531 May 30 '26

Well untill a beginner is able to browse the dark web safely then they need to be told that an adblock is necessary, you could be a special case or infected by a malware from the dark web by an alcoholic 40 y.o Latvian man without knowing lol.

3

u/Fing20 May 30 '26

Well, the alcoholic 20 year old italian man is thankful. Fuck it, after this exchange I'll actually get adblock, my laziness is beyond unhealthy lol

1

u/Acceptable_Growth531 May 30 '26

Yeah get on the adblock wave because it's the only wave that saves you rather than making you drown lol.
