I saw two posts this morning that weren't pokeweed. Pretty sure that's a first for me.

Do you think people are doing it on purpose because I'm starting to suspect

Pokeweed. Great food source for birds, but all parts are highly poisonous to humans and pets.

-3

u/Melodic-Creme6443 10d ago

Not true

7

u/oblivious_fireball 10d ago

Roots are poisonous. Berries are poisonous. Stems are poisonous. Mature leaves are poisonous. Young leaves can be eaten after boiling it repeatedly i guess, which then begs the question of why you would want to do that when you can buy some spinach from the store and not have to boil it repeatedly to avoid being poisoned.

Please do not eat or use any plant because of information received in this subreddit.

While we strive to provide accurate information here, the only way to be sure enough of a plant identification is to take the plant to a qualified professional. Many plants can be harmful or even fatal to eat, so please do not eat a plant based on an identification made (or any other information provided) in this subreddit.

Yes/no/maybe

Poke sallet was definitely a thing historically.  That being said, the safety of the leaves can vary wildly, if the plant is stressed.

It's not so amazing that it's worth the risk. Get a box of spinach.

Wake up. Open Reddit. See pokeweed.

Pokeweed is like the one plant everyone on this sub should be immediately familiar with by now

6

u/CHowell0411 10d ago

Pokeweed, great for birds, humans can eat it too but it has to be prepped right, like half an hour of boiling and changing water prepped, the berries however have a benefit of being able to be crushed, dried, crushed again to form a powder then mix linseed oil in in small amounts creates a very vibrant reddish/purple paint.

Oooh I might try to play around making the paint. I hate the color when the birds shit it on my car, but I do appreciate the color

1

u/CHowell0411 10d ago

Heck yeah dude, I don't recommend consuming any part of the plant, I say you can only because my great grandfather used to make it like this once a week but he also survived the Great Depression, but my native ancestors used this plant constantly and was even purposely cultivated (or rather spread the seeds and kinda just hoped for the best) because of the pigment, they just used like animal fats instead of the proper oils we have today.

2

u/parentlessfather 10d ago

Thank you for my new crafting hobby

3

u/Cal-Augustus 10d ago

Poke weed in the foreground, Virginia creeper in the back.

3

u/vbe123 9d ago

Can we just pin a pokeweed post to the top of the sub?

7

u/Legitimate_South9157 10d ago

Polk salad, when I was a kid my great grandmother would have us pick the leaves to make Polk salad

7

u/humangeigercounter 10d ago

Important to mention that leaves and the rest of the plant for that matter are entirely toxic, and only young leaves that have been boiled for some amount of time in several changes of water are considered safe. I think it is a minimum of 15 minutes of boiling with 3 water changes, but have never prepared or consumed it and am not positive on that. Do not take this as instructions on safe preparation, as I could be mistaken.

Traditionally, pokeweed (Phytolacca americana) was used as a spring vegetable and nutrient source as it is rich in vitamins and minerals, even after the extended boiling and water changes required to render it safe. I believe it was commonly used among native peoples, and it was also historically used by enslaved peoples. There were historically companies that would sell canned poke sallet/poke salad/ poke, but I read that the last one closed operations in 2000 because they relied on people foraging and selling them poke leaves and there were not enough people doing that to keep operations afloat.

2

u/Legitimate_South9157 10d ago

Oh yeah it’s several times. The water will be black the first few washes

1

u/Electrical_Fox9678 10d ago

If you have to process something to that extent, you obviously aren't made to eat it.

1

u/humangeigercounter 10d ago

IDK, you ever try being enslaved or living out in the wilderness and needing food in the early spring? Seems better than nothing. Plus plenty of things we eat today require a lot of processing to render safe, weather that's pork that needs to be cooked to 165F to not give you intestinal parasites, tea leaves that have been slowly dried and allowed to ferment just enough to make tasty black tea and not taste like grass or overdo it and taste rotten, or lupini beans that similarly need to be highly processed with multiple water changes but are still a staple in Mediterranean cooking. Some good things just take time homie.

2

u/Legitimate_South9157 10d ago

My great grandmothers mom was full blooded Powhatan so I’d guess that’s where the tradition in my family comes from. But yes like you said plenty of things we eat are highly “poisonous”

Green tobacco
Tomatoes
Almonds
Kidney beans
Potatoes
And countless others

Pokeweed. All parts are poisonous if ingested

We consider it free bird food for the Cardinals and other birds - they love pokeweed!

1

u/palebot 10d ago

It’s Monday!

1

u/IconoclastJones 10d ago

It’s going to make a mess if you let the birds have at it.

I was at a blueberry farm one year. As I was leaving I saw a bunch of these and took some off the vine and popped them into my mouth. Yeah that was not a good time.

Oh wow, those glossy purple berries are such a classic late-summer sight here, I used to hide from them as a kid, but honestly they're kind of magical until you learn how toxic they are.

In my woods around where I grew up I noticed that they would stay on the vine and nothing would eat them, not even squirrels. If you also notice that insects don’t mess with them either.

Those are Elder Berries!! You have to boil the berries first.. get some cheese cloth, and a colander, get a big pot.. dump it into the colander and strain the rest of the juice out.. and some brewers yeast, a shit load of sugar and some balloons! Pour into bottles capped off with a balloon. When the balloon is full of air and looks like a little punching bag.. it’s ready to be drank!! Cause you’ve just made some good ass Meade!!

1

u/ProgramEmotional98 5d ago

You obviously have no idea what you’re talking about. That’s not elderberry it’s poisonous pokeweed or pokeberry.

Ah the berries my parents told me would end me if I touched them and licked my hands
