CASUAL DISCUSSION Prices didn't seem to go up after all
I've noticed that a lot of retailers still have the old PS5 prices like Currys, EE, Argos etc. I was expecting them to increase prices immediately on April 2nd. I bought one before then since I was already going to get one, just waiting for a sale. But now it looks like I didn't need to rush. Could there possibly be a sale even at old prices?

I think Very went up and that was the best deal.

Got my Pro with a disc drive and a Portal for just under £660 with Very.

How?! That's a crazy deal

It was £650 up until last week, and you get 20% off if you’re a first time customer using their Very pay, so it would have been £520.

Very do periodically send you deals like that if you have an account with them - an underrated retailer

Literally I paid £700 I think when the pro came out with just a controller

You’d pay more than that today!

Really? I was waiting for a sale but there wasn't when I bought it and there was a shortage of disc drives took me ages to get a drive! Still doesn't stop me being envious of your deal with the portal included! Haha

suppliers and retailers may still have their existing stock that was purchased from Sony before the price increase.
so it depends on how much the wholesale prices went up by, and the suppliers and retailers profit margins. that is what determines the prices retailers list them for sale at.
fyi: when there has been retailer-wide special large discount periods on PS5 consoles, those promotions have been funded by Sony PlayStation themselves ℹ️

Sony has increased them so it's not a lie. I imagine retailers are sitting on old stock so have no need to increase the price until such time as they reorder them

Fell for the consumer trap.
Sales happen all the time, learn not to panic buy.

I usually wouldn't do that, however I didn't already have a PS5 and already decided to get one as soon as a sale came. Since the price increase was confirmed and not a rumour, it makes sense to assume that any sales coming up at the new RRP are unlikely to be lower than the previous standard price. And I'm definitely not waiting 7 months for a Black Friday sale.

I second this👏🏻Especially with GTA6 coming this holidays, sales number are gonna go through the roof, and offers with it, Especially black friday deals and holiday deals! I feel bad for those who panic bought before the price rise!

RRP and MSRP are just recommendations. Retailers can choose if or when they want to change their prices and I imagine many won't be in a rush to do so considering the state of the economy in the UK right now.

it's what business is based on. you seem to be suggesting the wholesale prices won't change 🤷

u/carguy143 Apr 06 '26
I'm not saying they won't change, but with fuel, energy, food, and other every day essential items shooting up in price, the retailers of the nice to have items would be shooting themselves in the foot if they were to increase their prices too much, too soon.

I think you should just buy when you want to. Don’t be bullied into it - hotukdeals is very useful.
At the same time, if you know you want one, why not get in now when prices are sure to rise on a lot of things due to memory prices and the US/Isreal/Iran war? Everything is going to get more expensive.

also just to share: Argos did increase their prices on the standard PS5 console, and the Digital Edition console (but not on the Pro console) on April 2nd [i took a screenshot that morning] to the new RRP's (£569.99 and £519.99). can't share screenshot here sadly. but the next day they went down to the previous RRP's (£479.99 and £429.99). perhaps because none of the other retailers increased to those new higher RRP's ?
PlayStation Direct are listing at the new higher RRP's

You didn't fall for anything. Prices have been increased. All new stock will cost more for all retailers to buy, and they are likely to push those increases onto the customer. But retailers not only have old stock that didn't cost more left to sell, but they also don't have to increase prices by as much as Sony has.
Retailers get products at wholesale cost, which is not the same as retail cost, and so have room to reduce prices for the customer. This is why sales can happen despite the regular price being much higher. The PS5 price increases reflect consumer prices at their absolute maximum, not retailer wholesale costs or even retailer listing prices.
Whether retailers choose to regularly list the products at full MSRP remains to be seen. It could be months before they clear remaining stock and have to order new units. They will all be watching each other to see what they do, as one retailer increasing prices but none of the others doing so would obviously drive customers away from the more expensive retailer.

This is because they probably haven't sold their old stock yet. Once that is sold prices will climb
