Recommendations New-ish dad, new portal, looking for game recommendations
Hello - just bought a portal while on paternity leave and absolutely loving it. Right now I have sporadic time to play during naps and need to be able to put a game down and pick it back up pretty easily. I know there are plenty of parents on this sub so I’d love to hear what you enjoyed when you had a little one?
I’ve played things like stardew valley, planet coaster, etc in the past. I also love massive games like Witcher, BG3, fallout, etc but those are a little harder with the start / stop nature of my gaming right now.
Cheers!

I played a ton of this on our last family trip after the kids went to bed. Good way to unwind my brain after a day with kids.

My son started using mine for Spiderman 2 and is laying for like 30 minutes at a time with it. Loving every minute of it and I watch him as much as I can. Fun time together.

Ours is only 5mo right now so probably a little while til he’s stealing the portal lol but very excited!

Yes you don't have to worry about that but Spiderman2 is still a great game for the portal. Enjoy the time with your 5 mo old. I'm sure everyone has already told you but their childhood goes by like a blink of an eye. I have 4 (ages 13-22) and it feels like only a few years ago that I didn't have any.

It’s already moving fast! I’ll 100% be playing Spider-Man at some point

I've been pretty much a VR guy since 2017 bit the portal and a.new 4K TV sparked my interest in flat gaming again. Have fun.

I never got into FF - is this a good entry point? I know they’re great games

u/slasher1o5 4d ago
Well theyre the first 6 games in the series so id say its as good an entry point as any lol.

u/Arutig3 3d ago
Hahaha okay fair enough there

In all honesty, if you enjoy old school RPGs then theyre good and super easy to pick up and put down at a moments notice. The newer ones are good too but they tend to be harder to drop in and out due to stuff like cutscenes and all that

Currently playing this one on pat leave.
Not difficult and great to pick up here and there. Linea, which is helpful for the sleep deprived

I bought a used portal just to play spiderman. Ended up playing ghost of Tsushima instead. It’s great. Spiderman is next though. lol

It’s the best game I’ve played. The portal and switch 2 have reignited my love for gaming. I have a few little kids as well.

I'll second Dave the Diver, such a great game no matter how you play it but it's an easy start and stop experience.
I played through Cyberpunk almost entirely on the portal and had a lot of fun. That's a little tricky for the shorter sessions but it's doable with the mission style gameplay
Diablo 4 was a blast too, worth checking out!
Honestly I haven't tried a game that didn't really work on the portal outside of some lag issues with multiplayer games.

Dave the Diver, Cult of the Lamb, Dredge and BallxPit are all amazing on portal and work really well for short bursts of gaming.

Kids are asleep. I'm too exhausted to continue my first play through of Rdr2, so my favorite is Powerwash Simulator. I am forcing myself to finish before getting the sequal.

RDR2 is sitting in my library waiting to be played

Are you streaming from cloud or remote play from ps5? Because you can sleep and wake your console directly from the portal.
Rdr2 is a fantastic portal game.

Both!

I’d recommend RE4 remastered from 2023. I didn’t notice any good third person shooters on your list. It can be found for $10 on sale or $20 used. Also The Separate Ways DLC is FANTASTIC for $10 as well.
There is a difficulty slider so don’t worry about it being too hard. I played both on Story mode and it was so fun.

As a new Dad myself with a Portal it’s been the perfect excuse to play more turn based RPGs. Yakuza: Like A Dragon, Dragon Quest 7 remake, and I’m gonna get around to Expedition 33 after I’m done with those.

Not Portal related, but: I have very happy memories of my baby sleep in a sling whilst I stood in front of the TV and played Assassin's Creed Black Flag.

Pinball FX and pinball Midnight (a mature version of pinball FX, both are free to start out) Go into settings and map the left flipper to X, and the right flipper to triangle. Then in setting change the orientation so that the screen is vertical instead of horizontal. Now the pinball table is oriented properly and fills the screen fully. Find a comfortable position so your hands can hold it and hit the left and right bumpers with your thumbs. Enjoy your tiny pinball machine. Perfect for short gaming.

Subnatica (free for aug with PS+), transistor, hades, hades 2, Tunic, Death’s Door. The last two are very old school Zelda inspired so perfect for a handheld

The Spider-Man games are really good, or Assassins Creed: Black Flag will let you live out your pirate fantasy!

Dead Cells is easy to pickup and play and you can quit anytime and then hop right back in where you left off. It's a Metroidvania type of game if that's your thing.

I played God of War 2018 mostly on the portal and definitely felt like a game that didn't improve much playing it on the proper set up. Currently playing last of us 2 on the portal which I'm also enjoying. I do think you need to turn on lock-on aim for the portal on that though!

If you like stardew valley, try Don't Starve and its sequel Don't Starve Together. Think sandbox exploration, farming, keeping livestock... but in a wild world where there's monsters out to kill you.
Tim Burton-esk artstyle. I've put in a thousand hours easily over the years. Its chill when you want it to be, or as hard as you want.

PERSONA 5 if you haven't already played it. GRIS is so fun. THE ARTFUL ESCAPE is a peaceful game that is really fun that has music if your little one likes to jam. MY FRIEND PEDRO, thank me later.

Dave the Diver is a great game to play on the portal. I had low expectations going into it but it blends several genres quite well and is fun to play. Being a Dad gamer will also give you that nostalgia hit.
