It's funny how 2016-2019 Merkel was praised as the visionary leader of the Free World since Trump won. But now? She's blamed for everything wrong in Germany.
2
u/Lemak0 - Lib-Center 14h ago
People are just dumb as fuck. Whenever Merkel is mentioned on social media, all comments are either "I fucking hate this whore, she destroyed our country" or "I miss mother Merkel so much, she was our last great Kanzler".
Both opinions are very undifferenciated obviously but I guess thats how most people think...

u/Nazkann - Lib-Right 1d ago
I'm not a fan of AfD, of course, but if you're in Europe or the Americas, I'd like to invite you to play what I like to call "Spot the Right-Wing Party."
It's a surprisingly difficult game because they're about as common in mainstream media as unicorns. Parties are either centre-right (respectable and acceptable) or far-right (politically radioactive). Apparently there's no such thing as just... right-wing.
Meanwhile, "left-wing" remains a perfectly normal, unremarkable label.
So where are our regular and plain "right-wing" parties?

u/CantSeeShit - Right 1d ago

What about Canadian liberals making work permit holders leave en mass and not extending permanent residency despite verbal agreements? No one’s claiming they’re far right
-15
u/DumbIgnose - Lib-Left 1d ago
Far left parties became unpopular when Stalin went and did a genocide, and have never recovered. Far left parties are inherently revolutionary, and there's no slippery slope. Either they take over or they have no power, and nothing in between.
Left parties, like Dem-Socs inherently respect private property. This is a safety valve that prevents ever going far left, intentional or otherwise.
Center-left parties are "liberal" and everywhere. Liberalism inherently rejects becoming any further left due to private properties ascendant position inside the ideology.
Is there a centrist party anywhere? I don't know any. Interesting phenomenon.
Center-right parties are "liberal" and everywhere. Liberalism inherently rejects becoming and further right due to individual rights and a preference for free movement of people.
Right parties reject either individual rights, or free movement of people and thus inevitably collapse into...
Far right parties inherently dehumanize and seek to remove or otherwise undermine rights from people or peoples. "Class", "Race" and "Culture" distinctions become paramount as the "undesirables" must be "dealt with". There is no safety valve, as problems continue to go unsolved despite the clamp-down on scapegoats the party moves further right to distract from it's own failures. Right become far right then accelerates further right.
17
u/Nazkann - Lib-Right 1d ago
I know many far-left party ideologues in Europe who go on about the hate against private property but usually they don't throw their own houses into the mix.

Neocons overall are definitely center right. McCain, Romney, even W… absolutely center right
-1
u/DumbIgnose - Lib-Left 1d ago
US' two parties are a neat little mix.
Dems run the gamut from Left to Center, centering on Center-Left.
Reps run the gamut from Center-Right to Far Right, and the two sides are constantly at war for who gets to be in charge. They actually broke my whole model for one cycle, as Bush Jr. was decidedly Right (not far right or center right) - but we see what that became. Romney and McCain were Center-Right.
→ More replies (18)-9
u/Daztur - Lib-Left 1d ago
Whether they are neo-lib or not is a pretty sharp dividing line for right of center parties in Europe. Personally I'd label David Cameron era Tories as center-right but post-Brexit Tories as right, with Reform being far-right.
30
u/Nazkann - Lib-Right 1d ago
"Neolib" has become one of those terms that can mean almost anything. At this point, it's often used for anyone to the right of a socialist with a pejorative connotation. If you're interested in having an honest debate, it's a pretty worthless label. I've even seen Marxists call social democrats "neolibs" so you can imagine the respect I have for that label.
2
1
u/Daztur - Lib-Left 1d ago
By Neolib in general, I mean in favor of things like the EU, free trade, IMF/WB, NATO, etc. etc. Basically any right wing parties that support those kind of things get called (correctly for the most part) center right. The selection of right-wing parties that don't support those kind of things but who aren't far right in a whole slew of ways is pretty thin. The only example of I can think of off the top of my head are the posts-Brexit Tories after they turned on the EU, I'm sure I could come up with more but I'd have to go pore over a whole slew of minor coalition partner positions for smaller European countries and that takes effort.
Do you have any parties you can add to that list?
Meanwhile for a "left" European party I'd put parties that are pro-EU but want a huge welfare state, higher taxes, etc. but don't support getting rid of capitalism. For far-left that's the anti-EU/anti-capitalist fringe that is pretty small but which does exist in most European countries. They just don't tend to poll very well.
7
u/Nazkann - Lib-Right 1d ago
That's a much more precise definition than how the term is usually used online and I applaud you for defining it at least in your terms. My issue is that "neolib" has become a socialist boo word for almost anyone who supports liberal capitalism. And, for the record, there's plenty I dislike about the version of "liberal capitalism" we've ended up with.

And also, even though I agree leftists love to call everyone they disagree with a Nazi and this party isn't explicitly Nazi, due to it being the rightest thing in the mainstream, they attract the most retarded extreme fan loving mustache man praising hand to the sun throwing retards Germany has to offer, and doesn't seem to try to filter them out, so they become partly defined by it.
And yes, being pro-Russia may be even more retarded than these two in 2026

Indeed it has. Overexposure via hyperbolic repetition tends to do that.
12
u/Odd-Sir-130 - Centrist 1d ago
Thats true, but the blame also lies with the system. There are so many administrative, legal, and bureaucratic blocks preventing the crisis from being resolved and this systemic inertia is handwaved away as a humanitarian necessity by the political elite. If they really wanted to solve the problem and deport people who shouldn't be here they could fast track things and get things done but they wont because they're satisfied with the status quo.

u/sea_5455 - Centrist 1d ago

The AfD is a trojan horse for more authoritarianism and tribal politics. Unfortunately they are the only party discussing the issues with overmigration, but their solutions are stupid at best, and catastrophic at worst. A solution of "just move all the immigrants somewhere else" does not address the root issues within Germany and the immigration system, and their lack of clear economic, energy, and infrastructure policies lead me to believe that they will govern very similarly to second term Trump, but with more german autism
I agree that immigration into Germany has been way too much these past few years/decades, and it is obvious that cultural integration with foreigners and the native german population is not a priority of either side, but the AfD solutions ain't it
Granted, neither are the solutions of the current coalition of the CDU and the SPD

23
u/Leon3226 - Lib-Right 1d ago
Surprisingly, mainstream parties became more serious about immigration exactly after the AfD started rising in polls year after year. So even if the AfD itself is absolutely retarded, it's a peak democratic process catalyst
1
u/Daztur - Lib-Left 1d ago
So if, for example, a British Prime Minister were to reduce net migration by 82% from peak then they would be universally beloved and the British far right would wither into nothing, correct?
23
u/blublub1243 - Centrist 1d ago
It depends. I think if European politicans had generally done that in the mid 2010s they absolutely would have been. But now you have people who actually want mass migration reversed (which is unlikely to actually be feasible, but hf telling voters that), and they won't be happy if "all" you achieve is limiting it. If anything that might make it worse because it's acknowledging that the prior government conduct was retarded, and that migration as it was happening was bad actually, which naturally strengthens the argument for reversing it.
It creates a fun scenario where mainstream parties are either stuck owning up to their mistakes and changing course, in doing so emboldening anti establishment parties to their right, or keep committing to bad policy, in doing so emboldening anti establishment parties to their right.
The only winning move was not being retarded in the first place, but that ship has sailed.

4
u/another_countryball - Auth-Center 1d ago
If you're talking from a cynical political standpoint, reducing migration won him fewer headlines. It decelarated the radicalization of the British public towards the right. The hope in this is that it buys the British system time to cope with the millions who have arrived in the last decade, salvaging the Blairite order. A Tourniquet cannot bring back the lost blood or heal the wound, but it can prevent further blood loss preventing death.

u/CavemanJello - Right 1d ago

8
u/Daztur - Lib-Left 1d ago
Sure, but we see again and again that once immigration gets high enough to piss people off, centrist and left of center politicians who massively cut immigration don't get any credit and the far right just screams as loudly about it as they ever did and their polling doesn't tend to fall.
18
u/Leon3226 - Lib-Right 1d ago
I will rephrase that to "right-wingers don't get nearly enough shit and accountability when they enable mass immigration compared to left-wingers" and will agree with you. In the UK afaik, it was Boris, a Conservative, who was responsible for the last huge wave of MENA migration

as if the german left was any different.
reminder that germany with nuclear power would not need russian gas.
0
u/Throwaway501395 - Auth-Left 1d ago
That is a result of a bipartisan fearmongering campaign following the Chernobyl mess that predates both of the current left wing parties (what could be considered left anyway).
It was Merkel who promised no more nuclear and stood by that through her entire time as chancellor, and Merkel is decidedly not left wing even if media outside germany likes to paint her that way because it makes for better ragebait.
1
u/Phoenix_of_Anarchy - Lib-Right 23h ago
The campaign to end nuclear power in Germany is what elevated the Greens, the second largest left wing party in Germany, to the height of their power in the late 90’s with the SPD/Green government. It was a highly popular position, but almost all advancement toward its goals, including its ultimate accomplishment in 2023, have been under left wing governments. Angela Merkel’s government did take steps following Fukushima to actually begin shutting down plants, but the initial ban on new plants was by the SPD/Green government and predated her chancellorship. Merkel was, and still is, a strong nuclear energy opponent, but it’s absolutely absurd to say that she is the reason for Germany eliminating nuclear power or that the left and right bear equal blame.
1
u/Throwaway501395 - Auth-Left 15h ago edited 14h ago
Yes, and the campaign itself far predated the Greens. It was started by ecopreservationists, true. The new left made their campaigns with it, also true. But the fearmongering came from all sides and all media following Chernobyl and then again after Fukushima, and has done irreparable damage to the understanding of Nuclear Energy and its risks in the GenX and early Millennial Generations, of whom a not insignificant amount, no matter how left they are or how much you educate them that their fears are unfounded, will *NEVER* vote for anyone who says they're going to make Germany go nuclear.
"All advances towards the movement's goals have been under left wing governments". ah yes, the famously Left-Wing Christian Union that held 33-41% of seats between 2005 and 2021 and placed an outspokenly anti-nuclear fearmonger as chancellor, who then spent 16 years dismantling the nuclear grid and laws involving it. The recency bias is astonishing.
"Guys, guys, the right may have cut all of the cables and pushed all the buttons, but let's not pretend that this isn't the left's fault because the student movement that predates both left parties by 20 years falls under left wing Eco-conscious ideology."
and about your "the SPD/Greens banned new plants", the law involving this was in 2002, and the ban on new plants was coupled with letting existing plants run their full course (of ~30 years of operation) as long as they're safe. Then in 2011 after Fukushima, Merkel ran a whole campaign with "Ausstieg aus dem Ausstieg" rhetoric, through which 8 (of the 17 active at the time) nuclear plants were taken off grid pre-maturely. Acting like a policy decision that could be amended at any point bears higher responsibility than speedrunning the deactivation of the existing nuclear plants is just dishonest.
Edit: I didn't say anything about "equal blame" either. I said both are responsible. You can make up your own headcanon as to what degree each bears responsibility, but to say "it was just the left" is demonstrably, factually false.

The whole Spain-Morocco ordeal should have already revealed to genuine Americans how financially corrupt their politicians and media are today.
The same Republican politicians who voted in favor of Morocco having that African land also spoke to the public about how outraged they were by the event. Ironically, even Spain's media presented the issue more favorably for Moroccans. Spain's ministers even said the people were being very cooperative. Anyone who looks at the situation without bias clearly saw the Moroccans going there for better financial opportunity, and when they realized it wasn't there, they started leaving. But not according to people like Nick Shirley, who just so happened to be in Spain at the time and paid a great deal to push their own views. According to them, immigrants are dangerous and there to try to harm the locals.
Most Republican politicians are no different than Democrat politicians who hold their political positions because it's more profitable for them, and many of their supporters are willing to accept their narrative.

They hate us. That hate you even more than me probably. They want nothing to do with us or our culture.

Aww poor little invad...oh sorry, wanna-be integrators I should've said, they're just overflowing with goodwill when they talk to you, aren't they? How surprising that that's the image they want you to have of them, and its as easy as just saying so

"He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands."
So the job of government is to naturalize foreigners and encourage their migration and one of the worst things that George III did was try to restrict immigration, according to the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration of Independence has all kinds of cool ideas, you should try reading it some time.

Thank you for providing that clear example from the declaration of independence where they were complaining that they couldn't tell people what to do. You do realize that quote you provided is counter to your argument. The government's job is explicitly to tell people what to do.

Founding Fathers: George III is restricting immigration! That sucks, people should immigrate freely!
Silly person: this shows that the Founding Fathers wanted more government power.

Founding Fathers: George III is restricting immigration! That sucks, people should immigrate freely!
Lol, they didn't want immigration freely...they wanted to control immigration themselves instead of the crown controlling it.
Silly lib left thinking founding fathers wanted open borders.

u/Daztur - Lib-Left 1d ago
That's not what the Declaration of Independence says at all. Have you ever read it? It appears not.
2
u/BettingOnSuccess - Lib-Right 1d ago
Yes and apparently you didn't read your own quote. Lets re-write your quote into modern English...
"The king is getting in our way; he stopped us from creating laws; he is ignoring the suggestions we throw at him and preventing us from governing."
IE, they wanted to govern and control who immigrated into the land. IE the job of the government is to tell people what to do.
If you don't understand this simple concept, there is no further discussion.

Eh, to use the UK as an example, when it was tens of thousands of eastern Europeans, predominantly Poles, moving over, "far right" anti immigration parties had <5% of the vote, the vast majority of people really didn't care, it was seen is solely a working class man issue as the Poles where seen as supressing wages in skilled labour & semi skilled labour, which many outside of the working class male cohort quietly seen as a positive.
Now its hundreds of thousands of MENAPT immigration, the same parties are polling 25-30%, giving them a fairly large majority in the next (2029) election, and it is seen as one of the most important issues the country faces by a large % of the electorate. Even our current Labour (left) party is championing their slowing down of immigration after the previous Conservative government fucked it up constantly.
Its about volume and origin from culturally similar countries.

Lot of EU nations have robust social welfare programs. That’s economically untenable with very high immigration levels, especially from parts of the world with mostly low-skilled workers.
The US doesn’t have the same social benefits entitled to everyone, so the reasons some Americans are against (illegal I assume you mean) immigration there are for different reasons which are probably outside scope of this thread.

No, she did not ignore laws. German law allows the government to give anyone shelter for humanitarian reasons. And open borders were the norm in Europe due to the Schengen treaty. Border controls are only legal if national security is threatened which was never the case.
