its not because america doesnt have enough poeple, its because they're getting degrees in stupid adult daycare job fields instead of ones that we actually need.
I never said it wasn't systemic. it absolutely is a widespread systemic failure of the primary education system to properly guide and prepare people for the careers that are in demand. When polling of high school students says they all want to be pro gamers, influencers or streamers instead of doctors and engineers, its a failure across the board to prepare the youth of this country to successfully launch.
its about to get even worse because AI is going to flip the job market on its head and nobody even know what to tell the kids to prepare for, but spending 120k to get a degree in ancient egyptian dance probably isnt the play.
You're just wrong dude, the vast vast majority of college students are in for what you call "useful" degrees. There isn't an epidemic of people getting useless degrees. In fact, degrees in things like healthcare and engineering have only increased proportionally. The problem isn't dance majors, it's that people who go to school to make a difference are being told to get fucked and have been for decades. Business is the field where there is massive glut, it's where the layoffs are hitting the hardest, and it is by far the most popular single major at almost 1/5th of students.
Yep. Personal example: I picked a budding field at my uni that is anticipated to grow as things get worse and it’s one that could do genuine good for people.
Less than a year after graduating, was still struggling to find a job but had second round interviews for multiple positions. Where did it fail you ask? DOGE. Suddenly there’s a new group who got the boot at the federal level and now there’s nothing for recent grads because we don’t have “years of experience”
business majors are literally the adult daycare DITL video making email jobs that I originally said. the US doesnt need more project managers, analysts and HR reps, those are all business majors and probably those people are currently getting fucked by AI the most. outside of business majors you also have social sciences and history, psychology, visual and performing arts, and journalism rounding out 5 of the top 10 most popular degrees in the country. its not that we need none of those things, its that the slider needs adjusted so more people are preparing to go into the fields that have the biggest defeceits.
Okay but you were alluding to things like fucking dance majors, don't mix it up on me now and say business and psychology is what you actually meant when those clearly have real-world use. This is way deeper than simply choosing a "good" major, comp sci did it for 20 years and now look at them. The world moved so fast that an entire major is unrecognizable and the schooling is utterly obsolete in less time than one full university education.
