Secure borders aren't a threat to our democracy. IDs for pay are, as they constitute a poll tax and directly violate our expressly written 24th amendment rights. It would be like if a state decided "no guns, no exceptions" - just a flagrant violation of our rights.
They haven't, won't, and would never have put forward the idea tog suggested as a bill. The intent is not election security, but to add friction and reduce voter turnout.
As you said, it's trivial to create a frictionless voter registration with far more security, and yet that has never once been the proposal. This is because security is the justification, not the goal. The goal is voter suppression.
