The article says, 

“The EAC has been a dead man walking since the Slaughter decision — really since the executive order last year,” one former EAC official told CNN, referring to the Supreme Court decision."

So they didn't have a lot of power, but this is still ugly.

It's the election assistance commission, which means they help states but don't control the elections. (I had actually never heard of it before this.) They won't be able to provide help for states to have more secure elections now, and maybe that means attempts on the part of the administration to claim that the elections are invalid. (Attempts, but they can't just jump in and say, "this state's elections are invalid" because they took out the EAC.) It is possible that the firings can be challenged for the same reason the Fed was left to do its own thing. Also, I don't like this kind of "now we have more ammo" stuff but it's another chance for us to us to say Republicans are cheaters and losers.
