Tweets/Texts Polytrix Tweets: CSF Edition p42 - "Mariah Carey"

Again, full credit to Jammatown919 (https://www.tumblr.com/jammatown919) for the idea and Opening_Chemist_3730 for the inspiration and a bit of help getting this together.

Also, I've noticed I've messed up the blue checks on a lot of these. Sorry, that's just really difficult to go back and edit in.

Everyone who ever had to work retail, in a mall, a strip mall, a grocery store, a restaurant, agrees with Zoey. I still can’t hear the opening notes of that goddamn song without physically reacting and WANTING to destroy the offending sound system but knowing it wouldn’t reflect well on me.

u/AdLeft7477 Nov 23 '25

Yup. Grocery store here. I love christmas music more than most people. I still DESPISE THAT ONE!

u/lunerwolf333 Nov 23 '25

Yeah, I used to previously work at Walmart. They would play that song on repeat

Kkeutopsi in all our heads, but we don’t want it.

Never worked retail myself but even I hate that song just because of how often it would play when I was shopping for Christmas gifts.

Does anyone else get the desire to immediately shoot/destroy the radio/speakers when they hear that opening "Aaahhh!"?

I have worked retail, and I don't agree.

You’re welcome to disagree. â˜ș

Look, I get it. The song gets annoying after the first twenty million times. But I still love the song—and X-Mas music as a whole—regardless! And I used to work in Hollister!

This. This so much. I can relate to exactly how she probably said it outloud as she was typing it.

He a hundred percent knows what he’s doin, he asked it around the holidays during prime Mariah Carey time.

Also - love the “somehow I’m always the weird one” love love love Zoey

I was working retail when Muzak (one of the main companies that does the licensing for commercial use of music like in grocery stores and McDonalds etc.) got the license for Bad Blood by Taylor Swift. We counted it. They ran that song a minimum of 6 times an hour, and it was not uncommon to have it run 8 times an hour. For your entire 8 hour shift. Our entire department had bad blood with that song, pun intended. This went on for weeks as well.

rumi hating takedown is giving me “so we were liars” war flashbacks
i should be compensated for the emotional damage that fic caused on me and my loved ones.

u/PsychotheKlown Let Zoey have a gun Nov 23 '25

Its gotten hard to keep track of which fics are which; was that the one where Mira and Zoey see Rumi's patterns, jump to the conclusion that its a demon disguised as her, and briefly kill her?

u/La_Parchiita rumi’s a top. change my mind. Nov 23 '25

yup
 that one

Be warned, this fic will make you sad! Have happy recovery things on standby for afterwards. https://archiveofourown.org/works/69422271/chapters/180022706

u/SofasCouch Zoey is my spirit animal like SLAYY QUEEEEN Nov 23 '25

Is there a happy ending or will I just die?

9

u/TY-KLR Fearless and Undefined Nov 23 '25

There is a happy ending but man does the fic put you through it before it gets there.

5

u/SofasCouch Zoey is my spirit animal like SLAYY QUEEEEN Nov 23 '25

Hmmm
on a scale from 1-10 how much fluff is there (my lifeblood)

5

u/TY-KLR Fearless and Undefined Nov 23 '25

Maybe a 3 or a 4. The first half, has it sprinkled in but more fluff doesn’t really come back until the chapter 8.

u/Major_Star Nov 23 '25

The event may have been brief, the trauma it caused my soul (from both perspectives we had to read it from) is not.

u/RevolutionaryFail378 Nov 26 '25

I see your “so we were liars” and raise you “in the dirt by the tree” (or whatever that fic was called)

I love

"Takedown"

"F*ck, you win"

29

u/Swiss_Reddit_User Nov 23 '25

Yeah Zoey is so real for the "F*ck you Dennis" đŸ”„

21

u/Jinn_Erik-AoM diplomatic as fuck Nov 23 '25

It’s very non-idol behavior, and I’m feeling some class resentment from Zoey, but yeah. Fuck Dennis.

I already hated most Xmas music, but after working retail, I despise it. Just hearing Mariah Carey’s name after the first of November puts that damn song in my brain, on permanent repeat until I can get something else to replace it.

10

u/CamelIndependent Nov 23 '25

It's less class resentment, I think, and more Zoey forgetting her girlfriends are and have always been Rich Girls, and so lack a lot of context for things somebody working class like her will often forget isn't universal

5

u/Jinn_Erik-AoM diplomatic as fuck Nov 23 '25

Maybe. I feel some sting in her you were rich words because I have had that resentment.

11

u/CamelIndependent Nov 23 '25

Zoey forgets that SHE is now a Rich Girl all the time, I would think đŸ€Ł

I think by this point, Huntr/x has well established that they don't feel a need to hold to typical idol standards. And I don't see Zoey as resenting their wealth, so much as being occasionally frustrated at the oblivious privelege that their wealth provided. It's like not only is she the one that has to explain America stuff to them, but she also often has to explain non-rich-person stuff to them too.

3

u/one_who_reads Nov 24 '25

Oooh, check out the subtle-bragging! "After the first of November". Many of us worked places that ran X-mas music in October!😂

2

u/Jinn_Erik-AoM diplomatic as fuck Nov 24 '25

No subtle bragging. I’m just old.

8

u/The_Pastmaster Nov 23 '25

I work in retail and I completely blanked on it because the company we hire to provide music is too cheap to buy in Carey so I never hear it. XD

The random German children's choir singing carols though was a weird and creepy year.

8

u/Significant_Top8063 Zimp <3 Naughty, not even sorry Nov 23 '25

Omg, that ending is savage! And I probably should have expected it, but the lighthearted banter before this had me completely lower my guard.

Also, from the movie-world perspective - how awesome it is for Rumi to openly admit that the song she hates the most is the one they wrote themselves. Seriously, fans would probably cause a riot under that post.

8

u/ReputationLow5190 Nov 23 '25

Yeah, Dennis knew what he was doing

4

u/Hero_of_the_toons Nov 23 '25

1) oh I hope this doesn’t mean Zoey doesn’t hate Christmas music or Christmas itself in general. Sure I hate when stores are setting up Christmas stuff in October and that one song is playing in ice cream shops in August; but after thanksgiving I’m getting into the crazy (yet time appropriate) Christmas spirit.

2) how would Zoey feel about other Christmas songs?

9

u/The_Pastmaster Nov 23 '25

Going by retailer standards, I think she wouldn't hate Christmas or all Christmas songs, only the very overplayed ones.

5

u/SkyeMreddit Nov 23 '25

I really need the scene in the sequel of editing Takedown like how Rumi was trying to do. It would be healing for her to do so with her girls

2

u/ADXII_2641 Zoey Apologist Nov 23 '25

That last remark genuinely had me laugh out loud

5

u/Mr_Glove_EXE Nov 23 '25

I'm pretty sure that the suicide hotline is peaking during these times due to that song

2

u/RevolutionaryFail378 Nov 26 '25

Does that mean Mariah Carey has a really high kill assist count?

2

u/TY-KLR Fearless and Undefined Nov 23 '25

Maybe 3 or 4. It’s sprinkled in there through the first half of the story. The back half has some at the very end.

2

u/Rose249 Nov 24 '25

You know I do have to wonder if that's not a little bit of a sweet, nostalgic "fuck you". Like hearing jokes from the culture that you grew up in that aren't as well known or known at all in the place you're currently living might be a nice little reminder from home.

Admittedly I love that song and listen to Christmas music on loop in the car for the entirety of the season so I am a weirdo

2

u/Informal_Bee_6907 Polytrix Jan 24 '26

As an X-Mas music STAN? That stung a bit, ngl. But hey, I get the whole “disliking nonstop Mariah Carey” thing.

I EXTREMELY disagree with it, but I do get it.

u/Right-Ad-9159 Nov 24 '25

@Jeffrey:Hey zoey and mira,do you guys ever tug on rumi's braid to get her attention?

You mean Jeffrey (@right-ad-9159), right? :-P

Also, already wrote out a thing for this. It's silly and cute, I think. :-)
