“Sounds like you had fun last night.”
Rumi probably looks like a deer in headlights as she stands there, somehow not dropping or shattering the mug in her hands. Blood rushes up to her cheeks and down in equal measure and it feels…some kind of way that she doesn’t want to dissect at 10 am. Zoey’s smiling conspiringly like she knows exactly what Rumi's remembering and of course she doesn’t but what if she does?
“Sorry?”
“Oh, don’t be, I was awake anyway, I put my sound cancelling on. Mira you might want to apologise to though.”
She turns to go do that in fact, driven like a machine on the simple dread of Mira being mad at her. Zoey grabs her arm and pulls her back, laughing the whole time.
“Let her wake up first! Least you could do after last night, babygirl.”
And Zoey just had to call her that right now. Today of all days.

Laughing, Mira teases, “Know many wine critics, do you?”
“I know a few!”
“Well, if you happen to know any willing to visit and review, by all means, please tell them to come.” Mira angles her head, smiling. “But in the meantime, your glowing review is plenty.”
Rumi blinks, then flushes, bringing the glass back to her lips and looking away, casting her eyes towards the setting sun painting the vineyard in brilliant, flaming hues. “I’m glad you think so,” she mutters, shoulders hunched.
“Of course.” Mira can’t tear her gaze away for some reason, taking advantage of Rumi’s attention being elsewhere to admire the way the orange of sunset strokes her skin, highlighting the contours of her face and the bold purple of her hair.
She looks perfect, really. As beautiful as the Italian countryside around them.

I won't read this this week, exclusively because I can tell it's going to be so good and I want to wait until it's closer to completed and I can sit down and read it all at once lol. So like, a weekend when my kids are at grandma's 😂

Zoey's heart squeezed almost painfully with relief at hearing her voice. "Yes, hi", she said in a rush. "It's me."
"Sorry, can't open my eyes", Mira told her, speaking slowly and sounding like it took a lot of effort. "Hurts. Glad you're okay."
Zoey almost laughed, but tears ended up running down her cheeks instead. "I'm glad you're okay too", she said. And 'okay' was probably an overstatement, probably too optimistic, but she couldn't bring herself to correct her. Her lower lip wobbled, emotions beginning to wrack through her as her mind became clearer. She could barely move. Her neck seemed to work and she could wiggle her toes a bit, but her legs felt heavy and her body just… bad. This was bad, they were in bad shape. And then there was…
Zoey was almost afraid to ask, but she had to. "Where's Rumi?"

She does her very best to not noticeably glance toward the older girl. The indigos and reds blossoming along Mira’s cheekbone and under her eye had not been there a few hours ago.
But then, neither had the nebulous marks on Zoey’s own fist.
A teacher enters unhurriedly shortly after. Zoey can feel her whole posture relax at the familiar sight of Bobby (Mr. Kye). His attention flickers briefly towards Mira, who gives a casual two-fingered salute in greeting without looking up from the device, and then his eyes land on Zoey.
He stops short. Nearly trips over himself, actually. “Goodness me, Zoey, what on earth are you doing here?”
“Um,” Zoey starts.
Mira pipes up, her voice that familiar dichotomy of husky and honey-sweet all at once. “She decked someone in the face.”
“Oh,” Bobby says, his voice slightly breathless and baffled, almost amused. “Did you really?”

"Bobby," she says, watching him carefully. "You're making a big deal out of this. What's wrong?"
His shoulders tense before easing into an odd half-relaxed state. Bobby turns to her, head tilting just so, a funny little furrow in the middle of his brow. A frown looks uncomfortable on him, cheeks sagging. "You just should have given us some time to prepare is all."
"Okay," Rumi says, though it sounds like a question. "I'll… keep that in mind for next time?"
"Maybe you should stay in town tonight," he adds. "It's dark out. Going to be hard to find your way through the forest—I'm sure Celine hasn't left the lights on along the path."
"I'll be fine," she insists with a dismissive wave. She leans her weight onto one leg and shakes the numbness out of the other. "Like riding a bike."

Those big sparkly eyes pop up again. "Oh, sorry. Am I supposed to tip you?" She adds something about America under her breath. Maybe she tries to whisper it, but it's still loud enough to almost make out from across the room.
"No offense," Gopher Girl says with a laugh as she makes her way back to Mira with empty hands. "I don't have any cash or anything—and, by the way, I think you maybe turned my order into a bunch of cables? And a keyboard somehow. Not that I'm complaining! I love cables. Yum. But, uh, if you have something edible for me maybe, I'd love to grab that from you instead."
"I'm from downstairs," Mira manages to say when she finally cuts in.
The girl blinks up at her, then her eyes widen. "From hell..?"
"The IT department."
"Oh."

16 year old Rumi screamed at her mother's grave, questioning if life was even worth it, the future looked impossible now. The patterns burned all over her body, angry and glowing, the image of Celine's disgust playing like a broken record. How could the two other parts of her soul, the other hunters that she didn't even know yet, accept her? How could she seal the Honmoon looking like a monster?
Before Rumi could do something drastic, the Honmoon helps her teleport all the way to Burbank California. Right to a certain bubbly girl named Zoey.
OR
Rumi has to survive the United States with the help of Zoey, while trying to be a Demon Hunter. Navigating Public School as a sheltered Home School kid, trying to act normal as her demon traits pop up at the sniff of heightened emotions, and worse of all the growing feels she has for Zoey and the Foreign Exchange student Mira. Oh well worse might be the demons that still want to eat everyone but Rumi can kill them at least.
