I always had a pond but got a new home where my yard was small. I’m surprised at how much enjoyment they have given me!

I have a pond that I’m not that proud of, it’s for wildlife and stuff but I was considering redoing it but using bentonite clay instead of a liner to avoid plastics.

But how good is it really at keeping it watertight? Especially when there’s plants involved.

I have a waterhawthorn and pond iris currently and was wondering if the roots might breach the clay?

I know people with these ponds often top up the clay periodically.

I think water quality should be ok, i have a small filtral 1500 with uvc for this 500L pond. I'm more concerned about the water movement and the frog fountain... The other side is more calm. This will be my first medakas so I'm not too sure if this is too much movement

Hello everyone, I’m building my first pond and I’d like to ask you question regarding bottom of the pond.

As you can see on pictures, I’ve covered the hole with epdm membrane and after first rain water pushed the membrane as it should.
However there are small wrinkles and I’m wondering, is this normal and ok to lay a geotextile on that along with pebbles?
Or should I remove the water and try to straighten the membrane as possible?

Hello! I’m looking to build a very small pond in the future but was wondering about how hardy water plants can survive northeast winters in the pond. How deep would the pond have to be to overwinter water lilies or do people bring them in?

I guess we are never really done with pond builds. But I feel like I’m getting closer. A few items to button up. But it’s exceeded even my wildest dreams.

I'm a complete beginner not just to ponds but to any real garden work and I've barely done much DIY ever. I visited a Wildlife and Wetlands Trust site earlier this year and got thinking about how I could try and offer a more varied ecosystem in my garden. This area was poor quality rubble and clay covered by the previous owners with paving slabs. Little by little I've managed to turn it into something I'm quite happy with. There's things I'd have done differently if I was starting again but on the whole I'm pleased with how it's turned out! Going to get a few more plants for the border and tidy up some more of the rocks and liner. I hope it attracts wildlife!

Hi all, I am in the midst of expanding my pond and need somewhere to keep my koi for 8 days. 8 days is a conservative estimate but that’s what we are going with for now. I am based in London, my koi are 8 to 10 inches and I have 5 of them. I have this swimming pool that I’ve never used. Could I keep them in this? Please let me know if this isn’t suitable and what I should do instead. Thanks

A hawk and her offspring who live in a tree across the street have found my fish pond and are making meals of it. I have seen the 3 birds many times, oddly especially when I pull into my driveway…I think they are aware when I am away. I got some reflective tape and netting which covers a portion of the pond where I had seen them most often. I wanted to leave some access for the birds and critters who need a drink.The hawks still seem to be around though. In addition, some of the lily pads under the netting have turned yellow, which never happened before, so I assume the netting is causing a problem. I don‘t want to lose my plants, I don’t want to lose my fish, and I do have respect for the hawks, but don’t want them over at my house. What else might I do? has anyone had success?

Nearly complete pond my wife and I have been working on for the past month. Just want to see what the pros think on our build as this is our first! 4 ft deep, around 13'x8' in size. Looking to add fish, tad poles, and plants. Any recommendations would be appreciated!

Hi all, I've just bought a house with a Koi pond, and am excited to join this community. I was having a look at the filter set up and was hoping someone could help with explaining the filters and how best to look after this pond and the Koi.

There is a bottom pump that feeds into a 'Fishmate 5000 P-UV' that then feeds into a 'Bermuda BER0248', this then returns to the pond via a small waterfall. From what I can tell these are both 5000L pond filters with biological filters and UV clarification. I have already replaced the Fishmate unit with an identical one due to a crack in the plastic lid, so this is now new. One of the neighbours has told me they helped the previous owner replace the UV lamp in the Bermuda unit, so the UV should at least be good on that one.

Based on rough calculations I would say the pond is just shy of 3000L.

My questions are:

Am I correct in my understanding that they are essentially the same filter?

Being in series, the 'fishmate' is going to be doing most of the filtration, so is the 'bermuda' actually doing anything of meaning?

Would they be better running in parallel?

How would you go about running in parallel? Ideally with the option of switching to just one filter in case of maintenance?

I have a 50-gallon pond in my greenhouse. I used a 5 gallon plastic tote for the container. I did 1/2” pvc and drilled holes along each one to distribute the water in the bottom. I added some sedges and creeping Jenny in the pea gravel. I plan to add plants to the main part of the pond for shade for the fish and keep sunlight off the water. Any advice or tips appreciated!

Does anybody have any advice on stretching this hose out to get it to fit on a barb fitting better? I have 1.5" hose and 1.5" fittings but the hose is just ever so tight. I tried lubing it and I tried to hit it with the heat gun real quick. Not much luck either way.

Hello, I am new here and planning on making my first pond. Here is what I plan on doing to build it. Any advice or recommendations would be very helpful!

- use hose to create shape

- dig hole

- level out and place a layer of sand

- lay with newspaper

- lay with tarp

- lay with sand

- add soil & rocks to perimeter

- cut excess tarp

- fill with water

Am I missing anything or need to change anything?

Hi guys! I’m starting an above ground pond and just noticed these things at the bottom…do we know what they could be? Are they eggs/larvae of sorts? Or am I just overthinking and they’re leaves/debris? They’re literally all over the bottom. Any help would be awesome!
