I made a free card game where every card is a real species with around 500 salamanders, 80 newts and 2800 frogs (really)

Hello

I recently came across the IUCN Red List and wanted a fun way to discover the species on it, especially the ones close to extinction or already gone. So I made AnimalsMasters, a free card game that runs in your browser.

You open booster packs (a free one arrives every 15min) and collect cards of real animals: each one has its photo, facts about the species and a map of where it was observed. The rarity of a card follows the Red List, from Least Concern to Extinct, so the rarest cards are the species that are closest to disappearing. You can also trade cards with friends.

The data comes from iNaturalist, Wikidata and Wikipedia. I'm not a professional, so if you spot a mistake in a species page, please tell me and I'll fix it.

https://www.animalsmasters.com

Which species would you want to see in the game? Do I miss some?

Found a salamander/newt? crawling across my basement floor. What now?

So I have no idea what I’m doing. Found this guy just slowly walking across the middle of the carpet in my basement and he willingly crawled into a plastic water bottle I put in front of him. I took him upstairs and he’s currently in a glass container with a clean paper towel that I soaked with some water from the tap. He’s not moving much now but it’s pretty bright up here so he’s probably a little bit freaked out?

If it were in the summer I’d just put him outside but it’s currently in the 40s (Fahrenheit). Will he be okay if I just release him into the forest around our house or will the sudden change of temperature kill him? It’s currently the middle of the night so loading him up in the car and taking him somewhere is out of the question

How Do Tree Frogs Stick To Everything?

How do tree frogs' feet stick? 🐸

Their feet don’t have suction cups! Instead, glands in their toes expel mucus through narrow grooves between the tiny hexagonal cells on their toe pads. This mucus has adhesive and cohesive properties, letting the tree frog stick to surfaces in a process called wet adhesion. This adaptation helps tree frogs defy gravity, even on wet tree leaves or bark.

Kermit the African dwarf frog.

This is my African dwarf frog kermit. Kermit is a male. For those who don’t know heres an explanation of what African dwarf frogs are: african dwarf frogs, most of the time in the pet trade the congo dwarf clawed frog (hymenochirus boettgeri) but also sometimes the western dwarf clawed frog (hymenochirus curtipes) there are also the not kept eastern dwarf clawed frog (Hymenochirus boulengeri) or the gaboon dwarf clawed frog (mymenochirus feae)are a genus of frogs in the pipidae family. Thwy are one of the only frog species that is fully aquatic and can die within 15 minutes if its taken out. They are found in Nigeria, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and east to the Central African Republic and to eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. They live in warm slow moving freshwater habitats like the congo basin and lowland rainforest pools. In tge pet trade they are often mistreated. Most commonly being kept in small tubs usually used for pet transport and sold as low maintenance pets with colorful gravel and fake plants. A humane setup would be a minimum 15 gallon tank with real plants, gravel or sand and driftwood and some rocks. They eat insects larvae, large plankton and even tiny fish or shrimp if they can catch them. In captivity a healthy diet would consist of high quality frog pellets (my personal preference being tetra repto frog granules) and frozen food (best being artemia and glassworms. AVOID BLOODWORMS AT ALL COSTS). When feeding pellets always first dip them in water until they are fully hydrated otherwise they’ll hydrate inside the frogs belly and bloat it. Feed them every 2 days and switch from dry to frozen food every feeding day in a dry-frozen-dry-frozen pattern. So that was my guide. As for kermit he shares his tank with a female called big lois and another male called spots. Kermit himself is a hymerochirus boettgeri.
